Face sharpen

I have a problem with some pictures. The person behind me was not sharp (other pictures on the same basis).  I use PSE 10.  Is there a possibility that person to sharpen?
http://www.wimschaerlaecken.be/DSC00891.JPG

Sharpen the entire picture - try Unsharp mask: Amt.108%, Radius 27.5 px, Thresholod 1 level
Then access the sharpen tool in the toolbox, and selectively sharpen the face of the lady in the background.
If you have another picture of her with her eyes wide open, you may want to clone the open eyes.

  • "Lightroom Effect Presets" Don't Always Work (especially vignette 1 and sharpen-faces). Suggestions?

    I am using version 5.4 and have had a consistent problem with this and earlier versions on two different machines, both powerful. The Lightroom Effect Presets sometimes do not respond.
    Anyone have the same problem and a solution? Thank you.

    I have no clue, but it might make a difference depending on the form being produced in Acrobat versus Designer. Acrobat will take you both places and one of them may have an issue with backward compatibility. I have not heard of that, but it is a possibility.

  • Output sharpening in InDesign

    I don't find any image output sharpening options in InDesign CS5. Don't they exists or is there another workflow? In the past I was told to resize and sharpen images in Photoshop before I place them in InDesign. Unfortunatley this is a very cumbersome process, especially when the image size is not fixed in the design, but will depend on the amount of content. If you resize and crop the image in InDesign (where I also have the context around the picture) it is almost impossible to recreate the exact image in Photoshop. I would have expected that InDesign has an option to output sharpen the images, but I can't find any. I checked the help, the forum and googled. I might use the wrong keywords, but I didn't find any usefull information. Especially after a lot of sharpening workflow made it in to other programms like Lightroom, I would have expected to have such a basic funtion where it is especially needed. By coincident I found link optimizer (http://www.zevrix.com/linkoptimizer.php), which is just the perfect solution, but it seems to be available only for the MAC and not for Windows.
    Does anybody has any proper and sufficient workflows?

    A few observations from an Adobe perspective ...
    Sharpening is a technique applied to raster images to boost apparent sharpness. The fact is that the best way to “sharpen” a photographic image is to properly focus the camera's lens prior to shooting! The sharpening available in Photoshop and other raster image processing programs simply stated tries to boost apparent sharpness by artifically enhancing what looks like object “edges” in the image files.
    Sharpening is image specific. Some images require no sharpening, many benefit from minor sharpening. And of the images that require any significant sharpening, that sharpening is often best applied selectively within the image such as to accentuate a person's face and/or fuzz out an overly busy and sharp background (effectively reducing depth of field). As you may know, Photoshop provides a number of methods of and options within such methods for image sharpening.
    The actual sharpening process is in fact dependent on the resolution of the original raster image as well as the apparent resolution of the image when rendered either on screen or to plate or paper. That apparent resolution is the resolution after any image resampling (either downsampling or upsampling also known as image interpolation) performed by the on-screen renderer or the RIP (for printing). Such image resampling can either effectively erase or exaggerate the results of sharpening done earlier in the workflow. In the latter case, those exaggerated results appear as unexpected ridges and/or light lines in the output.
    InDesign is primarily a layout program with significant support for entry and editing of text and vector objects. Support for raster images is primarily for placement within the document, sizing (including magnification and cropping), rotation, and participation in some special effects available also to text and vector object, in other words operations on raster images associated with the use of such raster images in the context of the publication being produced in InDesign.
    We get enough complaints about the complexity of InDesign as is. Trying to integrate a full Phoshop-like image editor into InDesign would be way over the edge. Furthermore, in most publication workflows, raster images and similar artwork are typically not embedded in any publication file itself, but referenced by links by all publications that use such raster images and artwork.
    Ideally, Photoshop would be used for specifying qualitatively what within an image is to be sharpened, to what degree, and possibly with what method and allow some preview of what the results of that specified sharpening would look like when rendered at a particular magnification. Such sharpening parameters would accompany the image as metadata through InDesign to the exported PDF file and would only be acted upon (i.e., the actual sharpening of the raster bitmap based upon the sharpening parameters) by the renderer or RIP when either the PDF file is viewed at a particular magnification or printed at a particular resolution.
    The problem is that the ideal sharpening workflow is not currently implemented by anyone. It makes little sense to try to hack something onto PDF export capability of InDesign to do sharpening when in fact the target display magnifications and/or printing resolution is not yet definitively known. Furthermore, since such sharpening parameters would likely differ from image to image per (2) above, doing a global sharpening of all images with a single set of parameters makes no sense at all.
    This subject is very interesting and complex. The OP, FastFeet, does bring up some important points. Unfortunately, a reasonable solution requires “fixes” and new features in the image editing and the rendering aspects of the workflow, not in InDesign, the layout vehicle.

  • Output sharpening on export

    I wonder if there is a way to specify an amount of sharpening that shall be applied to an exported image that is going to be scaled down e.g. for web presentation. My preferred solution would be to include this into an export preset.
    I have used this "output sharpening" feature (also known as "web sharpening") within the export preset e.g. in Bibble Pro 5 (yes, another RAW converting software) and it really helps avoiding loss of sharpness as a result of scaling down images. I agree that this is not necessarily needed for each and every image but there are quiet some cases when output sharpening gives them some punch.
    As a newbie to Aperture this is what I have learned so far:
    Aperture provides various tools to adjust sharpening of images, starting with the sharpening adjustment applied to RAW files (RAW fine tuning) continued by "Sharpen", "Edge Sharpen" up to the possibility to "brush in" sharpening to certain parts of an image.
    Apple was so kind as to provide a nice introductory movie clip to illustrate the basic usage of edge sharpening
    All these adjustments are applied to the image in its original size of course. As soon as I export images and downsize them (using an appropriate preset) I do not seem to have any influence on how post-processing continues (re: sharpening). I have to rely on how Aperture handles this internally (right?). Surprisingly, this is different when it comes to printing. If the output is print the user may adjust the amount of "output sharpening".
    As far as I have seen I am not the first and only one who faces this issue. A more elaborate article on output sharpening with sample images in context with Aperture is given e.g. here.
    Another interesting review on "Sharpening with Aperture 3" can be found here.
    Of course I have also searched the forums for a suitable solution. As far as I can see a satisfactory solution has not been outlined so far:
    Sharpening upon jpeg export
    Sharpening export workflow question
    Output sharpening
    Sharpening during exporting process
    Maybe there are some news or workarounds in the meantime. I'd appreciate your proposals and look forward sharing your experience on this issue.

    Kirby, I thank you for your kind answer. It is very much appreciated!
    After reading one of the articles quoted in my original post I thought that the "BorderFX solution" for output sharpening on export would no longer work. But it obviously does as you report.
    In the meantime I have had a look at the BorderFX website. Many features for a plugin - more than I usually need - but an interesting project anyway!
    As you supposed I am not that keen on using a plugin for just the sharpening of images going to the web. But it's at least a workaround which I think is worth while a try.
    So let's have a try!
    For anyone having a similar problem I attach two sample images which I exported
    a) with the built-in export feature of Aperture (3.2)
    b) with BorderFX (1.5.3) and the settings you recommended
    Please be sure to click on the respective images as the previews look horrible to me at first sight!
    a) Aperture Export (resize to 600 px height)
    b) BorderFX export (resize to 600 px height, Edge Sharpen: Intensity: 0.5, Radius 1.00)
    The image size allowed to upload here is quit limited, but I think the difference can be noticed. Maybe the sharpening in b) is already overdone but the comparison shall only serve as a first shot.
    If somebody from the Apple Aperture team comes across this thread:
    Maybe we can have a "sharpen on export setting" right within Aperture one day?
    This is what e.g. Bibble offers in this respect:
    In this case post processing is similar to an unsharpen mask filter setting.
    I edited my message after I have seen the artifacts appearing in the preview images.

  • Best practices for applying sharpening in your workflow

    Recently I have been trying to get a better understanding of some of the best practices for sharpening in a workflow.  I guess I didn't realize it but there are multiple places to apply sharpening.  Which are best?  Are they additive?
    My typical workflow involves capturing an image with a professional digital SLR in either RAW or JPEG or both, importing into Lightroom and exporting to a JPEG file for screen or printing both lab and local.
    There are three places in this workflow to add sharpening.  In the SLR, manually in Lightroom and during the export to a JPEG file or printing directly from Lightroom
    It is my understanding that sharpening is not added to RAW images even if you have added sharpening in your SLR.  However sharpening will be added to JPEG’s by the camera.
    Back to my question, is it best to add sharpening in the SLR, manually in Lightroom or wait until you export or output to your final JPEG file or printer.  And are the effects additive?  If I add sharpening in all three places am I probably over sharpening?

    You should treat the two file types differently. RAW data never has any sharpening applied by the camera, only jpegs. Sharpening is often considered in a workflow where there are three steps (See here for a founding article about this idea).
    I. A capture sharpening step that corrects for the loss of sharp detail due to the Bayer array and the antialias filter and sometimes the lens or diffraction.
    II. A creative sharpening step where certain details in the image are "highlighted" by sharpening (think eyelashes on a model's face), and
    III. output sharpening, where you correct for loss of sharpness due to scaling/resampling or for the properties of the output medium (like blurring due to the way a printing process works, or blurring due to the way an LCD screen lays out its pixels).
    All three of these are implemented in Lightroom. I. and II. are essential and should basically always be performed. II. is up to your creative spirits. I. is the sharpening you see in the develop panel. You should zoom in at 1:1 and optimize the parameters. The default parameters are OK but fairly conservative. Usually you can increase the mask value a little so that you're not sharpening noise and play with the other three sliders. Jeff Schewe gives an overview of a simple strategy for finding optimal parameters here. This is for ACR, but the principle is the same. Most photos will benefit from a little optimization. Don't overdo it, but just correct for the softness at 1:1.
    Step II as I said, is not essential but it can be done using the local adjustment brush, or you can go to Photoshop for this. Step III is however very essential. This is done in the export panel, the print panel, or the web panel. You cannot really preview these things (especially the print-directed sharpening) and it will take a little experimentation to see what you like.
    For jpeg, the sharpening is already done in the camera. You might add a little extra capture sharpening in some cases, or simply lower the sharpening in camera and then have more control in post, but usually it is best to leave it alone. Step II and III, however, are still necessary.

  • When in workflow to do localized sharpening and removal of blemishes?

    I work with NEFs that I open into PS as 16 bit Tiffs in Prophoto RGB. My files are intended both for family photobooks and for further editing of the best  - plus these last ones will end up being resized to more than one size before their final output. I presently do not do any sharpening in Camera Raw (I use PS CS6) and remove noise after opening into PS where I convert for smart filters and use either PS's own filters or (mostly) the Neat Image plugin. I do not do any sharpening here as I have learned it would be best to wait as long as possible doing this.
    I want to be able to do some localized sharpening (using the sharpen tool) and also to remove blemishes (here I often use the brush tool that also cannot be used on a smart object). Also output sharpening. I have to admit that I previously did all this (except of course the output sharpening) on the background layer (to minimize file sizes and also because I always keep untouched original files elsewhere) before further editing in PS. When I got some very noisy files from family members with less good cameras and found pixel holes and remaining noise in darker areas I even used the blur tool directly on this layer (on faces) before applying the sharpen tool where needed locally. This is perhaps vandalism from a professional standpoint but a desperate attempt to save these files if important for the family history.
    Can I do the localized sharpening + other localized cleanup early on in the PS editing and only postpone the output sharpening till after rezsizings and JPEG conversion (the photobook files)?
    As for the noise filters: Could I after the above convert for smart filter and here use the noise filters (without sharpening) for an editable version of these and do the rest of my PS editing?
    Or do I really have to perform all this steps for each size of the file?
    I am sorry if the questions are dumb or disclose a lot of misunderstandings but my learning curve seems to become steeper and steeper with age.

  • Selective SHARPEN (more powerful)

    Hello,
    I am a relatively new LR 2.1rc Mac user (from PS/ACR) and so far love the app! But my biggest hindrance are the limited selective sharpening tools available.
    Say I have a photo slightly out of focus. In PS I can use SmartSharpen (or even USM), with a very wide range of radius / amount / etc. to almost always salvage the picture. Since it's fairly strong I always use a layer mask to limit its effects only to where it's needed. (eyes on a face, for example)
    This weekend I tried this in LR but found it's not possible. The local adjustment brush has Sharpen 0-100, but it's not nearly strong enough AND has no options for me to tweak, like SmartSharpen in PS. It's a shame, because now my workflow must involve trips to PS for selective sharpening. (and I almost always sharpen selectively)
    Capture sharpening (in the Detail tab) was getting close but it affects the whole picture, which I don't want. Output sharpening (screen or print on export) also doesn't address this issue. And honestly, I do most sharpening selectively (via layer masks) to avoid unnecessary build-up of noise, so both of these LR options are less useful to me. (the auto-mask in Detail is nice but I would fine-tune areas further in PS)
    Just my humble opinion.
    Thank you for your consideration!

    Quick update:
    Without radius control Clarity unfortunately didn't work well. I see it as a local contrast enhancer and didn't help sharpen the photo.
    Multiple sharpen masks did allow me to strengthen it, but due to lack of radius control it ended up bringing out high-freq noise. A quick trip to SmartSharpen in PS gave much better results, mainly because I could fine tune the radius to what was necessary.
    On a side note - the sharpening in the Detail tab (non-selective) was working quite nicely when I fine tuned the sliders. Bummer you can't mask it.
    My conclusion: More flexibility here would be definitely appreciated. I will be forced to go to PS just for selective sharpening, prohibiting what otherwise could be a LR-dominated workflow.
    One idea: combine multiple virtual copies with a mask? I made a VC and used the Detail tab to fix the sharpening, and then thought it would be great if I could combine the two (in LR, I know I can export 2 layers to PS and combine there) VCs with a mask.

  • MG5420 Is There a Way to Sharpen Print-on-Disc Artwork?

    Hello,
    BOTTOM LINE: Can I change the Print Quality setting when printing my artwork on a printable disc?
    I recently changed from an Epson R220 printer to a Canon MG5420. Both allow direct printing onto printable CD and DVD discs. I changed printers because of Epson's tendency for the ink nozzles to dry out, making the printer unusable. Three R220s have died on me that way, in spite of my trying several solvents to flush them out.
    I create the artwork (photos, drawings, text) in Photoshop, save it as a .jpg, and import it into Canon's Disc Label Print software.
    I've noticed that the disc printing I got from the Epson printer was significantly sharper than that I am getting from the Canon printer. I see that in the Canon program you can make facial adjustments (sharpness, etc.). Is there a way also to improve the overall resolution of the printed images? As is, the resulting printing is acceptable, but I know from my experience with Epsons that it could be better.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Since starting this thread, I've done more exploring and found a partial answer. Don't know if it's the best, but it helps.
    The steps are:
    After the artwork is on the template and before printing,
    Right-click on the image.
    On the drop-down menu, select Correct/Enhance.
    Click on the Manual tab.
    Increase the sharpness on the Sharpness scale. (I tried 10, and it seemed to work well to sharpen the text.)
    It's still not up to the level of the Epson printer I had, but the text is less jagged. Of course, too much sharpness can make other parts of an image--such as people's faces--seem less realistic.
    Next time, I might try a mid-range sharpness to see if that is a good balance.

  • Face recognition and places

    wouldn’t be nice if also aperture could do also “face recognition” + “place” . some features are useless for professional business but some could make my work easier.

    Hi schalliol,
    I am not disagreeing with you - and I will use these features too and really look forward to Aperture 3.0 or whatever comes next as much as anyone. I just meant that we need to be realistic about the capabilities of face recognition in a "pro environment" - i.e. you wouldn't want the grandma to be identified as the bride, just because she wore similar glasses and her haircolour happened to match the bride's on the day... All I am saying is that it is not difficult to quickly tag people with keyword bar presets "manually" - if a face detection helps here by doing the "obvious" ones by itself - awesome - but it needs to be configurable so that a group shot or a difficult one (smaller "head" in the picture/background people) are not mis-matched etc.
    Note: I have not yet played with iPhoto09 so I should probably not write all these speculative things anyways and just await the final product, I rest assured the Aperture team is aware of all these things and will come out with some really nice new features.
    My second point was that many of us are waiting for slightly more critical things - i.e. selective editing, better sharpening & smoothing, non-destructive effects/filters etc. - whereas the face-recognition is a "nice to have" thing rather than a make or break - as it can obviously be accomplished by keywording in the traditional way already - manipulating an area of an image with Capture NX's or Nik's Viveza precision is still not possible by contrast, at least not in an Aperture-only and non-destructive way (technically it is non-destructive to your original image of course, but every change takes up space by creating a "full image" copy.
    It will all come to us eventually - they sure got the resources to create world-class products.

  • Howto: Make Edge Sharpen etc. part of the default HUD

    Hi all,
    To make the new Edge Sharpen control part of the standard HUD:
    0) Quit Aperture
    1) Go to Library/Application Support/Aperture
    2) Copy the file AdjustmentsDefaults.plist to a safe location
    3) Open the original AdjustmentsDefaults.plist file by double clicking it. This should launch the Property List Editor with the file loaded
    4) Unfold the Properties List nodes
    5) Select the last entry in the plist (the one named 5)
    6) Click on "New Sibling" in the toolbar
    7) Enter RKProSharpenOperation as the value
    8) Quit Property List Editor
    9) Restart Aperture and enjoy your customized HUD!
    Other operations that appear to work are
    RKRedEyeOperation (Red Eye)
    RKStraightenCropOperation (Straighten)
    RKCropOperation (Crop)
    RKDustRemovalOperation (Spot and Patch)
    RKChannelMixerOperation (Monochrome Mixer)
    RKNoiseReductionOperation (Noise Reduction)
    RKSharpenOperation (Sharpen)
    Sepia and Color Monochrome seem to be handled by parameterized versions of RKImageOperation and I haven't experimented with adding these.
    As always; perform experiments like this with care!
    Kind regards

    that one is already a default ... at least it was for
    me after upgrading to 1.5 ...
    maybe someone who has the plist in front of them can
    give the exact, or else i will when i get home ...
    My face is FF0000!! You are right, it is there. I don't believe it was before 1.5 and I missed it.
    Thanks!

  • Editing photos with either very dark or very red faces - the rest of the photo is fine

    I posted this once but can't find it so obviously posted in the wrong place.   I would like to know an easy way of lightening just the face of a person in a photo - the background is fine.  I would also like to be able to change the colour of some faces - e.g. for some reason, one person in a group has a very red face.  - I've tried auto colour correct and adjust colour for skin tones (this one for some reason will turn the entire photo a strange shade of orange, yellow, blue or green!!  I am using PSE 13 on a Macbook Pro.
    I would also like to know how to remove the shine from individual faces.
    a word of explanation - I am working with about 1600 photos I had scanned in from my photo albums (going back to the 70s) - for the most part, the scanning was pretty good but there are several instances when I've had the above issues.

    Try this:
    Open the file
    Go to Enhance>Adjust lighting>Shadows/highlights, then work the sliders to decrease the shadows and to brighten the picture overall
    Open a Photo-filter adjustment layer. I used warming filter 85 @25% density. Check "Preserve luminosity".
    Sharpen with unsharp mask from the Enhance menu. (64, 1.7, 1)
    Use the clone tool to clone blond hair to the top of the little girl's head

  • When creating a DVD face in Photoshop 13 my save options are limited to .PSE and .PDF.  Why can I not save as a jpeg or other file format?  This was never an issues in Elements 10 (my previous version).

    I just recently purchased Elements 13. I am in the process of creating a DVD face for a video. The design is complete and I would like to be able to save it as a JPEG so I can use it in another program that prints my DVD's. The problem is that it only allows me to save the file as at PSE or a PDF. No other options are available. Why is this?  I upgraded from Elements 10. In Elements 10 I have never had a problem saving this type of project as a JPEG.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    Once I finished composing my question I went back and spent some time to figure out the problem. Rather than choosing the "save as" option, which doesn't work, or attempting to choose "export" (grayed out), the correct option is to choose "export creation", which is near the very bottom of the initial drop down options. That works!  I still think it would make sense to have it as an option in the "save as" area.

  • Customizing ADF Faces Look & Feel. Some questions & suggestions

    Hi everybody,
    We are developing an application with ADF Faces using JHeadStart. For the moment, I am studying the way we must modify the JHS templates to adapt each element to our needs.
    As it's told in the JHeadStart Developer's Guide, there are two ways to customize Look & Feel:
    1) Modifying the templates
    2) ADF Skinning
    I'm using both methods, but I feel that thay are not good enough to adapt the L&F to our customer requirements.
    My main problem now is in the ADF Table customization. I want to use ADF Table because it offers us a lot of features that are not in the jsf table (the selection column, the table overflow...), and is very usefull combined with the generated JHS code. But at the same time, it doesn't offer a lot of functionality in the look & feel customization. Using JSF Table, I can set the CSS style for headers, rows, columns, the table, I can set the border, cellspacing and cellpadding. But I cannot do
    any of these thing (or at least, I don't see how) with the ADF Table.
    Our customer (a government) have a strict definition of the look & feel of his web applications. They want we use their CSS styles definition file, so they can modify at once the Look & Feel of all their applications. Modifying the L&F through skinning generate other styles, not use the style classes in our CSS (o so I think).
    So, the questions:
    1) There is any way to set the suitable styles for the ADF Table components (headers, rows)?
    1bis) Why, If I have defined a new skin, with only just a few selectors, some styles from oracle are applied? Maybe because the render kit in the 'adf-skins.xml' is "oracle.adf.desktop"? If it is true, how can I make that they are not used, I must implement a render kit or can I use another existent?
    2) Can I decide how looks the select column (for example a button instead of a radio button)? Can I decide where does it goes (right or left)?
    3) There is any way to hidden the text Show/Hide of the showDetail in the table (the tableOverflow), as I can change the icons through skinning? If it is not possible, How can I overwrite the text. I need it in Catalan, but it is shown in English for this locale. Where is the message bundle I should overwrite?
    4) There is any way to force a tree to start fully expanded?
    5) There is anywhere documentation about the javascript functions used in ADF and their meaning? I think for example in the previous question. If I knew which javascript function I should call for expand the tree and its parameters, I could put the call in the onload event of the body.
    6) I use a selectInputDate. I have skinned the launch-icon, and I would like to do a similar thing in the chooseDate that is opened in a new window. But It seems not to be affected for my skinning directives (if I put a chooseDate in the same page, its L&F follow the skinning rules I've defined). I don't know if this dialog is an ADF feature or a JHS generated feature.
    7) There is any way to keep unmodified the id I've choosed for a component? (I mean, an inputText with id="hello" in a form with id="form" will have in the HTML an id = "form:hello", but I would like it to be simply 'hello')
    8) How can I control the position and the size of a dialog (the chooseDate dialog or a dialog I've created)? In the cases I've been testing, it seems the dialog is forced to resize depending on the content. I would like to know if I can establish a fixed size.
    9) There is any way to open a non-modal dialog? (which I could keep open at the same time that another instance of the same dialog)
    For the moment, I think I have no more question. But give me time.... :-D
    The suggestion I've to do is basically more flexible components for a better customization (for example, the styles settings I've talked about previously). ADF components are nice and powerful, but I think they should generate pages that follow the tendencies in the web development: tableless pages (I cannot understand the utility of the objectSpacer existing the margins), use of CSS for layout...
    Any answer, comment or suggestion will be welcome.
    Carles.

    I have been able to make the UIX 2.2 and ADF Faces LAF look near identical by updating the oracle-desktop.xss file within UIX 2.2 as follows
    <!-- Change the accent color ramp to tan -->
    <style name="DarkAccentBackground">
    <!--<property name="background-color">#cccc99</property>-->
    <property name="background-color">#d2d8b0</property>
    </style>
    There are still some differences:
    1) A black line appears on the ADF Faces on the 'menu1' facet selected tab below the text. DON'T KNOW HOW TO REMOVE THIS FROM ADF Faces or add it to UIX 2.2!!!
    2) In UIX 2.2 a bulleted list uses the HTML <li> tag. In ADF Faces it doesn't use the HTML <li> tag rather it constructs the bulleted list using lower level HTML tags with the 'bullet' becoming an image, in my browser this means the disc is smaller in Faces. The motivation for this change I think is explained via this post. Since I have no control over how this specific HTML tag is rendered it forces me to replace the /adf/images/bltdscn.gif file in adf-faces-impl.jar with a larger disc!

    May update this again if there are other things I notice.

  • ADF Faces useWindow attribute

    I am trying to open a Dialog window using an af:CommandLink. It is not opening a new window, only navigating to the page as normal. Is there anything obvious I am doing wrong? I have also seen this syntax
    useDialog="true"
    The IDE is rejecting this as not part of the tld. It may have been part of an earlier version of ADF Faces?
    Here is the script from the page
    <af:table   var="row"
                value="#{accountBacking.accounts}"
                rows="5"
                banding="row"
                styleClass="table.sample"
                binding="#{accountBacking.table}"
                >
    .......Trimmed for relevance.........
        <af:column formatType="icon">
            <f:facet name="header">
                <af:outputText value="Edit"/>
            </f:facet>
            <af:commandLink useWindow="true"
                            action="#{accountBacking.editAccountAction}"
                            partialSubmit="true">
                <af:objectImage source="/images/edit-blue.gif"/>
            </af:commandLink>
        </af:column>
    .......Trimmed for relevance.........
    </af:Table>

    I figured it out. In older examples where useDialog was used, the return value from the action was "process:something". This was also defined as a navigation rule in faces-config.xml
    I found an example from oracle that uses the useWindow attribute. Instead of "process:something" it should be "dialog:something"
    Here is the example
