Face Tracing on Illustrator

Hey guys
I am tracing my face on Illustrator, and I have some trouble with my picture. How do I make Illustartor show shadows and light on the image ? You know, like the light reflecting on my face? We're supposed to trace it by guiding the different shades of my face color, ligher or darker. Thanks for your help.

While having your face selected in Illustrator, look at the top panel right under the menu. You'll see the options for "Live Trace". Click and hold the tiny box with the down-pointing arrow and hold the mouse down.
It will drop down a menu of built-in options for converting your raster image into vector art. Choose "Tracing Options..." down at the bottom of the menu and it will bring up a dialog box with a lot of options.
I would suggest selecting grayscale for the mode and then you can play around with the "Max Colors" number to show more or less detail. I've attached screen shots of where to locate the Live Trace options and another screen shot of the Tracing Options dialog box so you can see the settings I used and the results I got. After you get the settings you want, click "Trace". There's one more step to turn it into editable vector artwork—while your picture is still selected, click the "Expand" button above. You then have total control of what colors you might want to use and unwanted shapes you might want to reshape or delete. Hope this helps.

  • Illustrator File Bug spreading...

Not sure how it happened. I have two files... a PDF and a document in illustrator I'm working on. I placed the PDF in Illustrator file I was working on to trace it. I had to make a change, so I opened the PDF itself and edited the file. When I saved the PDF I was prompted with "Some files are missing or modified... now?" So far so good.
When I was done tracing the file, something happened in the PDF file (which was still open in another window) which caused the timestamp to be changed on the file. Could have been Windows (I've seen this behavior before.) could have been an automatic backup... I'm not sure. I made no changes to the file.
I hit "No" do not update, because I was planning on deleting the layer I traced. Next I deleted the layer. Then I am prompted with the update links dialog when the links palette is empty. I dismissed it, closed the file, closed Illustrator, and went about my day (yesterday).
I had to open the file again today for editing and the message came up again. After I closed the file, now it's happening to other files which have no links either. (I closed the original file with the issue.) It's a bit of an annoyance because it prompts me every 60 seconds or so to update the links in the links palette. If there are links in the links palette (for a different file) it does not prompt me, but when links are non-existent in the file I am prompted. The screenshot is from a completely different document after the corrupt file was closed.
There are no symbols with embedded links or images and no raster content (with the exception of a couple of non-expanded blur effects exist. If I open a different file, after restarting illustrator, everything works as expected until I open the *corrupted* file. Then the pattern begins all over.
For my workflow, I normally work in native AI and save those files with un-outlined fonts (for editing) then I will finalize a file by converting it to outline files prior to saving to EPS. Sometimes I will save a proof out as a PDF if the file I'm working on isn't imported into something else. I'm not usually in the habit of importing PDFs for tracing in Illustrator, but I was in a hurry and figured it would work. It placed it, but now it haunts the document FOREVER.
    Thought I would share.

That's definitely a good troubleshooting method to go about solving an issue with a corrupt file.
Reimporting the PDF in my case did not fix the problem because the phantom  PDF does not exist in the form the program is searching for. Despite having another version of the file linked, the program knows the *embedded* PDF that was not removed has been updated in link form and it tries to update the non-existent link.  I say embedded because AI tries to save PDF compatible files natively, so it embeds links even though it still maintains the linking in the links palette to allow people to update changed files.
Copying the selected content from the file to a new file was the first step I took to fix the issue I had. When my client referenced the older proof I reopened the old file and that's when all of the trickery began for Illustrator itself, causing the program to treat other files as if they had missing links long after the corrupt file was closed.
On another weird note, the phantom placed PDF still shows in a saved copy as a PDF (with a PDF extension) on Apple's preview app on iOS and MacOS.
My client thought it was a design element when she viewed the proof on her iPhone and was giving me changes per what she was seeing. The file does not appear this way in Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro.

  • Desperate for help! indd crashing when copying/pasting from illustrator

i have cs2; updated programs for indesign and illustrator; on my new imac
i have a bunch of small graphics -- logos, and line drawings -- that i need to place into indd.
they have been scanned and traced in illustrator.
i have copied and then pasted them into indd. HOWEVER INDD crashes immediately over and over. i've tried copying and pasting them from ai into indd into blank documents -- once again crash.
I NEED TO GET THIS PROJECT DONE! yikes.
what can i do to prevent crashes???
AND -- big question -- if i save them in ai. and place them into indd -- i have white boxes around each graphic which I DO NOT WANT. that's why i was copying and pasting to begin with.  Are there ways to save graphics and place them into indd without these white boxes around them. I'm open to other formats -- and not embedding -- but need to get rid of the box.
at one point i got a message saying memory was full. now it all just crashes.
please help anyone and everyone. i'll be indebted to you!

ok; i am able to get the objects to show up without the white box when doing this!!!!!
    THANK you for that suggestion!!!!!!
but what about copying and pasting?? isn't that supposed to work between indesign/illustrator????

  • Saturation in Illustrator?

    Hi Guys,
I have a vectorized image in Illustrator which is made of a painting/drawing which was photographed and afterwards image traced in Illustrator.
I think that the power of the colors is a little weak after image tracing, so I would like to select the whole image and give a little more power to the different paths etc.
Is there an option to do this in Illustrator?
    Thanks for your help!
See the image here: left is the original picture, right is the result after tracing and vectorizing, but I would like the colours to be more bright and happy and... Certainly when converted to cmyk the vectorized image really misses power...

    Hi,
I found the panel but I have no idea how to do this when I have hundreds of objects/paths selected at the same time?
I did find (just a second ago) another way: select the objects, go to Edit => Edit Colors => Saturate...
This did it for me, but thanks for your reply and I'm curious to learn more about the Color Guide!
    Many thanks!

  • The webcam is not detected

    Hi
The problem is that when I run jmfinit and it tried to see if there are any webcams, then my logitech quickcam pro 4000 is not found. Actually it seems to see it, but the camera light flashes on and off all the time, and at the same time the face tracing dialog also flashes. It goes on like that for a while until I interrupts it doing CTRL-C. At which point it stops and gives me an error, see below.
From what I can understand, it actually finds it and then it fails to talk to it, but that it very strange since I've seen others here post that they are using their logitech webcams without any problems.
So does anyone have any ideas on how I can move forward, this is so puzzling. So any ideas are welcome.
I have just installed JMF, paths and classpaths are set, and I'm using the windows performance download.
    Regards

  • How can I make a photograph large enough for large format printing?

Is there a way to make an image larger on photoshop or illustrator? I will be printing on a large format latex printer. So the printer itself is excellent but its the image that i am struggling to acquire.
I have basic knowledge of the programmes but if you could explain it to me i could figure it out.....
I am aware of rasterize and vectors, but please  could you explain how they work, and if that is my solution.
I want to keep the original photograph as realistic as possible (would prefer not to have it traced on illustrator) and from research it says simply increasing the image size amount of pixels on photoshop does not help...perhaps it does, if you know please help!
This will be a print for an interior wall of an exhibition trailer, and we want to cover all the walls. Plus in future we will be printing for vehicle wraps so I need this knowledge! Help me

Let e try to explain briefly...
"Is there a way to make an image larger on photoshop or illustrator? I will be printing on a large format latex printer. So the printer itself is excellent but its the image that i am struggling to acquire.
    - The actual resolution necessary to print grand format depends on the printer.  Most of the large-to-grand format inkjets print at 600dpi.  Photoshop is the better application for sizig images, while Illustrator is the better application for sizing graphics ( ie., logos ) and type.  Use Illustrator to layout both the images and the graphics.  You typically would send the print vendor an appropriate PDF file ( that can be scaled ).

    - You most certainly can use photographs in large format.  The problem is you will have to setup the file scaled down.  In some cases, the output will have to be assembled in sections.  Let's take a section of 10 feet high x 36 feet long.  You'd setup your Illustrator file 2.5 feet high x 9 feet long ( 25% ) or 30 inch x 108 inch to be enlarged at the printer 400%.  Each time you enlarge an image 2x you cut its resolution in half.  So, an image starting at 300ppi will end up at 75ppi.  So, your image file would need to be 300ppi at 25%. 75ppi sounds low, right?  In actuality, it is enough to print grand format and the image appears smooth. Now the question becomes, how do I get an image large enough in Photoshop?  Remember, you'll need a 30" x 108" image plus bleed at 300ppi ( Placed in Illustrator at 100% ).  There are applications like Genuine Fractals or Image Doctor's "Blowup" which will enlarge an image file without degradation.  I use Genuine Fractals and the results are phenominal.

    - It'll become easier as you do more of this type of work.  The amount you end up scaling is up to you.  There are limitations as to how big a document can be in Illustrator.  I like 25% because it is similar to working on a print ad that is high resolution.  Another thing to remember is set your raster effects to High in Illustrator.  They will be retained in the PDF which will be enlarged 400% and the ending raster effects will be 75ppi just like the image.  Also, feel free to contact the print vendor and ask them questions.  You could send them what I've written here and see if they agree.  Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • No Preview with Auto-Trace?

    Hi-
I've run across an issue in After Effects CS6 where when I try and trace an Illustrator layer, there is no preview shown on the layer that I am tracing. Could I have somewhow disabledd the option to show the preview, or it it a bug?
It's also worth noting that after playing with the settings, the preview will flicker on and off for a second before disappearing again.
    My specs are as follows:
    OS: Mac OS X 10.7.5
Processor: 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3
    RAM: 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB
    AE Version: 11.0.2.11
    Any help would be appriciated.

Why are you tracing an Illustrator layer? You can get a much more accurate mask of the shape by copying the path in Illustrator and pasting it into After Effects!

  • Live Paint and other tools not working?

    Hello,
Most of the time while using Illustrator almost all my tools except for the pen tool do not work, as in the mouse icon turns into this circle with a line through it, and doesn't allow me to do anything on my layer, and it's just one layer nothing else. Why does this happen? I have a drawing that I image traced on illustrator, and would like to paint it now, but I can't use the live paint option. Sometimes the select tool doesn't select anything and it just disappears!
Can anyone help me with this?

I'm a complete beginner to illustrator and I thought it was just another small thing that beginners are not familiar with and that other people can relate? Anyway, I use Illustrator CC on a Mac. Here is a capture I made trying to use the brush tool:
The cursor of the mouse doesn't show, but it is like I said, a circle with a line across. This is where the live paint doesn't work as well:
Maybe you can spot something on my screen that I'm doing wrong?

  • How do i live trace without the white background

Im using cs3 photoshop and illustrator.
I want an object lived traced in illustrator without an white background colour.
I selected the object and cut it in photoshop and put it in a window with a transparant background, i saved it and opened it in illustrator, than it comes up without a background, but when i live trace it a white background comes up.
Anybody know what i can do about it?

You first have to expand the art, then proceed with the magic wand. Or select one white objekt with direct select and use Select > Same > fill color

  • Select range of anchor points

Hello, I am new to the forums but not so new to Illustrator. I am working on a scanned black and white image that I image traced in Illustrator. I am now in the process of seperating certain parts of the image from each other for changing colors. I know how to do this, but my way is by using direct select and going in and picking out points and joining them which is going to take ages. Is there any way to say select a range of anchor points on a path (not the whole path, but not individual points either) like shift clicking a range of files in windows explorer? Are there any other ways I can go about this in a more time efficient manner? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am using the Creative Cloud.

It might help if you could show an example, and be a bit more specific.
Are you separating white areas or paths from black? When autotracing black and white imagery, I usually select any white fill and then Select > Same > Fill Color, and delete. Most of the time, the black is a compound object. As far as selecting series of points (assuming you are dealing with only one color, and not a repeating set of paths underneath), direct-select and shift-key-drag over points you want selected.
However, if you are wanting a complex black object to be made into various colors, separated by new paths you draw, then draw your paths, select the new paths and the shape underneath, and click on the left-most icon under Pathfinders in the Pathfinder Palette. You can also do this using Shape Builder by highlighting everything, choosing Shape Builder Tool, and clicking on one area. You can add other areas to your shape by click-dragging from one area to another.
If this isn't addressing your issue, then please post a screen shot and give us more details.

  • What was used here?

I was wondering what Adobe product was used to make the graphic on this page?..... http://direct.adobe.com/v?xlWcHcnEcccTHnH
Was it created from a product or created by a graphic artist freehand?

Yes, as we see in many cases the lines between vector and raster are blurred. (Speaking metaphorically) This could well have started out as photographic (raster) and been traced in illustrator (Vector). Not so much the entire image because it looks to be a collage of subjects. If I were tasked with reverse engineering this image I would use a combo of both Photoshop and Illustrator as I saw fit, which best utilized my level of current experience. There may be hundreds of ways to create a piece like this, from hand drawn marker comps which could be scanned, traced and touched up, to using a tablet in nothing more then Illustrator, but when creating I find it best to stick with what tools you are most effective with. My best guess is its final end user file format was illustrator. (but perhaps I'm just Illustratorcentric)

  • Add an outlined letter to a cube face illustration

    Hi everybody,
I'm trying to add an "S" to all my cube illustration faces (3). I would like them to match its face perspective, but I cant find a flawless way to do it. The perspective never seems to match the cube's faces.
Do you know any trick to do it?
    Thx in advance.

Create the "S" in a square then distort the whole thing to match the square to the face you want to lay it on? It seems like it should work (but I've been wrong before).

  • White Lines on Live Traced Artwork in PDF from Illustrator CS3

Hi,<br /><br />I've recently been using the Live Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator CS3 on my artwork so that my artwork becomes a vector image instead of a raster (I'm told it's better for Web because it works better with varying resolutions - doesn't become pixelated).  For my live trace, I use a custom preset:<br /><br />ADJUSTMENTS-<br />Mode: Color<br />Threshold: 128 (grayed out)<br />Palette: Automatic<br />Max Colors: 256<br />Output to Swatches: OFF<br />Blur: 0 px<br />Resample: 600 px<br />Fills: ON <grayed out><br />Strokes: OFF (grayed out)<br /><br />TRACE SETTINGS-<br />Max Stroke Weight: 10 px (grayed out)<br />Min Stroke Length: 20 px (grayed out)<br />Path Fitting: 1 px<br />Minimum Area: 1 px<br />Corner Angle: 1<br />Ignore White: OFF<br /><br />VIEW-<br />Raster: No Image<br />Vector Tracing Result<br /><br />The preview info, located under the dialogue bubble with the i states:<br />Paths: 4894<br />Anchors: (no number)<br />Colors: 148<br />Areas: 4822<br />Image PPI: 200<br /><br />I don't know if that helps anyone, but that's just the preset I've used to get a sharper, almost fully preserved vector version of my raster image.<br /><br />When I want to convert it to a PDF file using the File > Save As... > Save as type: PDF with the following preset:<br /><br />Adobe PDF Preset: Illustrator Default<br />Standard: None<br />Compatibility: Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7)<br /><br />Then, my image as viewed in the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional has several white lines, outlining areas of color.  You can see it here: <br /><br />http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/Mont-ImmortalSquirrel/Ai-PDF_whitelines.jpg<br /><br />The image connected to this link was captured with PrntScrn and copied into Photoshop, cropped, and saved as a jpeg.  The issue is perfectly preserved, as you can see the white lines outlining areas of color.  This problem is persistent despite the zoom level in Acrobat 8.  <br /><br />Just another little bit of information, the problem is most noticeable in the red area and not the cream/white and yellow areas.  When I was working on the original raster image in Photoshop CS3, the cream/white area was done with the Ellipse Tool, using Bevel and Emboss in the Blending Options.  The same goes for the yellow area, which was done with the Line Tool.  The red area was done manually, with the Brush Tool, Smudge, Blur, Burn, etc.<br /><br />I'm telling you guys just about everything I've done leading up to this issue.  But, if there's something you need to know more, I'll try to figure out what I could've possibly done wrong to get this result.

I too get this result when using LiveTrace. My simple solution to this problem was to just place a solid color shape behind that section of the trace where it occurs that is the same color as the trace. Simple...but it worked.
