Facebook Chat via iChat Hangs

I am using the latest version of iChat and Snow Leopard. I have properly set up my iChat to be used with Facebook chat, but for some odd reason whenever someone logs on or off of Facebook chat, it causes iChat to hang for as long as 30 seconds sometimes. It always un-hangs, I never have to Force Quit, but it is really obnoxious. For the first couple of months using iChat w/FB chat this was not an issue, but it seems like over time it has developed into one. I have checked and rechecked my settings and they are all correct. Does anyone have this experience and does anyone know how I can fix it? Thank you in advance!

Hi
Welcome to the    Discussions
I take it this is using the Jabber side of iChat to Enter the User/Screen Name you have and creating a separate Buddy list ?
I would check the iChat Menu > Preferences > Alerts and change the top drop-down to Buddy Becomes Available
Below that is the Drop down with tick box for the Sound choice
A couple of items below that you can link an AppleScript.
Do you have anything active here ?
Also check the top drop-down set to Buddy become Unavailable
The other possibility is something to do with the Facebook Login.
Still In Preferences go to the Accounts pane.
Highlight the account in the list on the left.
Go to the Server Settings tab on the right.
Does this have the SSL option On ?
Does the port read 5223 ?
(I am only asking you to look)
Do you have any other Buddy list and does the problem happen there as well ?

  • Error message while trying to connect to Facebook chat via Thunderbird.

I have read multiple forums and watched YouTube video's on how to connect to Facebook Chat via Thunderbird however, I am unable to connect. I have gone into Facebook to verify and re-verify my password and have also tried multiple variations of my "username"...i.e. First name....First and Last name......[email protected]..I continue to get an error message saying:
"Error: Not authorized (Did you enter the wrong password?)"
    Assistance would be appreciated.
    Thank You

This method did solve my issue. Many thanks.
PS..Yes, it was nice to see it was fairly hidden to find the username..<sarcasm..:)

  • Cannot connect to Facebook chat

Since February, I haven't been able to connect to Facebook chat via iChat. http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=16739
My username and password are correct, obviously. iChat keeps saying that it "can't verify the identity of chat.facebook.com" (although I didn't activate SSL), as in this picture: http://i54.tinypic.com/34q311y.jpg
Clicking 'Continue' is useless, as the window will show up again.
This happens on my iMac G4 as well as on my MBP C2D.
    Am I the only one?

    Hi,
I went to Digicert's web page (I searched and got to and went here)
    http://www.digicert.com/help/
I then put in chat.facebook.com and it came back they don't have a Certificate.
At this point I would delete the Certificate and then Delete the com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist and then restart iChat.
Google is Jabber server, hence removing the Jabber .plist
The reason for removing the .plist is something in iChat is probably checking/Calling the Certificate and the .plist is the most likely place.
There is link on the page I linked above that might be more help.
    http://www.digicert.com/ssl-support/certificate-not-trusted-error.htm
It may also pay to check the Facebook Help pages.
Is there anything with Facebook that requires a SSL Login ? Such as changing your account or Privacy settings ?
Does Chatting on Facebook in web browser mark the page as Secure ? (normally a Padlock shown bottom right of most Browsers)

  • Facebook chat in OS X Messages shows numbers instead of names

Though I have used Facebook chat in iChat and now OS X's Messages programs for many years now with few issues (some disconnecting issues here and there but that's about it) The past few days I have encountered a problem that I can't figure out how to fix.
Whenever I first launch Messages and it logs me into FB chat, the names of my friends show up correctly for a handful of seconds. Then, suddenly all of the names and pictures disappear and instead turn into numbers (those aren't the actual numbers, just examples of what it looks like.) So my buddy/friends list becomes populated with all of these numbers and I can't tell who is who.
If I quit Messages and relaunch it, again I will see the proper names of my friends for a handful of seconds after logging in, but it always turns right back into a bunch of numbers.
I'm thinking this MUST be a server problem since not a single thing has changed on my computer.
Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

    HI,
I missed this thread as it was not tagged with the Messages Category.
However I have read most of the other threads in Mountain Lion and the iChat Communities on this issue.
I have read that it does not appear to effect Adium but has been reported effecting other Jabber Client app.
It is effecting both Messages in Mountain Lion and iChat in earlier versions of the OS.
It does appear to be a Facebook issue as the Buddy list will display User IDs unless linked to an Address Card when it will display the "Real Name" in your Address Book.
Obviously the numbers are linked to the Jabber IDs at Facebook  (Any account with "Chat" enabled) but are not actually Jabber IDs as you lose the Buddy icon replaced with the generic Head and Shoulders icon.
I have asked the Hosts to remove pics in some posts that contain snapshots of the issue.
Although the issue is not Apple's there are considerations about whether they are seen to be assisting in posting Facebook users info.

  • Facebook Chat - Chat History

    Hello,
in the past I used the Facebook Chat via the browser to send chat massages (IMs) to single people.
Now I connected to Facebook via Skype (6.20.0.104) and I see my Facebook contacts in Skype now.
    So the connection works.
But when I select a Facebook contact I do not see the chat history (the IMs that I have sent up to now via the Facebook Messenger or the web browser).
Is there a way to see the older Facebook chats in Skype?
    Maybe an import?
95% of my friends use Facebook and only 5% use Skype only.
So when I can not see older messages then I will use FB via the web browser (and not via Skype).
This means that I start Skype only when I want to contact a Skype-Only contact.
    Greetings
    OLLI

bump, because i'm still unable to see my chat history with version 7.2.0.103.
Without the history the whole "use FB messenger through Skype " is pointless.

  • Disabling Facebook chat on Facebook while using iChat?

I'm using my Facebook account on iChat. It works fine, but what I find irritating is that whenever I access Facebook, current chat messages keep popping up at the bottom of the page, while older messages appear as a series of new Facebook messages. Is there any workaround to disable Facebook chat on Facebook, while enabling it on iChat?
I am also using MSN on iChat through Jabber (server is headcounter.org). It seems that each time I access iChat after an absence, I get an iChat message from headcounter.org. Does this happen to all servers? Is there any way to disable this?

If I remember correctly, the various MSN transports would try to add me as an MSN buddy, which I usually ignored or refused. For msn.jabber.belnet.be, I think (but can't say with certainty) that I added it as a buddy, but when I checked just now, this was still pending authorisation from the other party.
I was unable to delete msn.jabber.belnet.be in PSI. I also clicked on the links to try and unsubscribe to manage subscriptions, but the links were broken.
Although msn.jabberbelnet.be is not on my MSN/iChat list, this notification still appeared when I closed PSI and restarted iChat:
When I click on it, I get the screenshot which I attached to my previous post.
All this is getting too complicated for me, I think i'll just bear with the notifications and hope that iChat will one day come integrated with MSN! Thanks a lot for your help.

  • Facebook chat - sending messages to offline contact

Whenever I am writing something to a Facebook contact via Skype, and this person happens to go offline, even if it is just for a minute, the Skype window prohibits me from typing anything else as it changes to the "x is offline. Send SMS" window immediately. Also, there is no way to access what I have already typed till the contact in question comes back online.  As this is terribly frustrating, I am wondering if there is a way to turn this off by changing some sort of setting, or whether this could be fixed in an upgrade or so. It of course shouldn't be an issue as Facebook itself allows offline messaging too. A lot of my contacts actually just get on Facebook chat whenever I send them a message. I encounter the described problem about twice a day in average. Thanks a lot!!

Common, it's a basic feature of any chat client. Some my facebook friends are invisible but still chat, however Skype consider they're offline and I cannot send message to them from Skype desktop. Please allowed us to send message to FB offline contacts (in fact, they're really online, just invisible / turn off Chat status).

  • How do I access the images within a .chat or .ichat archive file?

Looks like Messages in Mavericks has lost the ability to view images within archived .chat and .ichat files. Does anyone have any idea how to view or extract the image from those files, either within Messages or via another program?

    Hi,
I have found that if a chat is "Open" in the Messages window but is not the front chat then when selected the pics have become file markers.
Double Clicking them opens then in Quick Look.
I have opened one in TextEdit.
I can see where the pic is supposed to be:-

The bit at the end refers to a wrapper and the fact it seems to be a .png file
The section of chat looks like this
However as you know the pic does not show.
I have not been paying much attention to the Add-ons for Messages (or late iChat) that may help in some way.

  • I just hooked up facebook chat to imessage, and while Jabber says I am logged in, nothing from facebook is coming up. I use mountain lion 10.8.5 on a macbook pro.

I just added my Facebook chat account to iMessage. When I am logged in to iMessage, it looks like I am also logged in with Jabber, but nothing from Facebook is coming up (I use Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on a 2011 macbook pro)
    I have already:
unchecked "use kerberos fv5 for authentification" and "use SSL"
checked "automatically find server and port"
restarted both the application itself, and then my whole computer.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi,
Although I don't have a Facebook I d have 3 other Jabber accounts logged in.
One is from Google and the others are from other Jabber servers.
My Google settings look like this,
Most Jabber server need SSL and the App will automatically make this port 5223.
However Google will let you change theirs to use port 443.
One of the other 2 is using "Automatically find Port and Server" and is using port 5222 and No SSL.
Whilst most will use SSL and port 5223 it is not true for every Jabber server.
I can never remember if the Facebook chat ID is @facebook.chat.com or @chat.facebook.com (I suspect the second)
You are using the Chat ID and not your regular Facebook ID ?
I can't follow the iChat link on this page as I can't log in
    https://en-gb.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php
I would check the set up page  but if that does not work I would work through all the settings possibles with the SSL, Ports, warn on insecure passwords etc.

  • "Rend Error" when sending image via iChat/AIM

On my brand new iMac aluminum, I am unable to send, and friends are unable to send, images via iChat AIM 3.1.8 (V445). When either of us try to send, we get the message "An undefined AIM error has occured. The server message was: Rend: Error"
I then spin around and use my old G4 iMac to send an image - no problem. My buddy is also able to send to me, no problem.
Both computers are connected to the same Linksys WRT54G router. When I searched for the term 'rend' only one thread came back which suggested to change the port from 5190 to 443. I did this and it didn't help.
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Craig,
In the Linksys set up pages you have Application and Gaming (Which is where I think you are talking about)
In there there are several options.
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, DMZ (possibly UPnP Forwarding and QoS)
Disable any Port Forwarding or Port Triggering. DO not use the DMZ.
Save settings. (you should still have Web browsing and Mail abilities).
GO to the Administration tab on the top row.
    Enable UPnP.
    Save Settings.
UPnP allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
This way the Linksys can be left doing DHCP if you wish and it will not matter if your computer gets a new IP every now and then. Also the Ports are opened by the application and close after a timed period of non use.
You can limit the "Hops" to the number of devices the computer is from the Linksys (1 ?) to make it more secure.
On the main set up page you could limit the the DHCP range to the number of computers you have to prevent outside connections.
The ports you describe so far are only the TExt chatting and file sending ports
