Facebook Places Torch 9800

So i've seen all the posts about people saying that Facebook Places is not working for them, but i'm not sure what they mean by not working so rather than contributing to a post that is rather vague I thought I would outline very specifically what my problem was and how it relates to my device and see if anyone else is having this problem.
Device Info
BlackBerry 9800
6.0 Bundle 695 (v6.0.0.246, Platform 6.4.0.105)
3G Bands 1,2,5,6
Carrier: Telus
Blackberry App World 2.0.1.12
This is a personal blackberry no BES
So my problem with Places on the facebook app has to do with how the app seems to be interacting with the API for blackberry maps. When I fire up blackberry maps the torch starts off with the broad 3km range circle as it waits to acquire more satellites. As the satellites are acquired the position narrows in.
How does this relate to Facebook Places? glad you asked.
It seems that when places first fires up it makes the initial request to the BBMaps API and gets the broad 3km range circle and then stops. It never refines the location, so maybe this isn't so much a problem with the facebook app as it is with the Maps API.
No matter how long I wait the initial map locaiton for Facebook Places remains the one that it grabbed from BBMaps when Facebook Places loaded.

It seems like I'm having the same problem as you. I'm using the Torch and I'm on Telus too.
I noticed that the Maps app in my BlackBerry starts off always with the 3 KM range. Facebook Places tries to use that as well.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's really random.
Have you found a proper fix?
Thanks.

This sound like a hardware problem.  Have you tried a battery pull to reset the phone?  If you have I recommend giving your carrier a call to setup repair or replacement of the phone.

  • How do I re-install the operating system on my BlackBerry Torch 9800 - I am sure it is hacked.

    Greetings,
Can someone point me to instructions on how to re-install the operating system on a BlackBerry Torch 9800 and then upgrade it to the latest release?
I have done this several times in the past, due to recurring hacking, but have lost the instructions.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Regards,
    Jean-Pierre
P.S. I would preffer a releas of the OS without any pre-install applicaitons such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn,
and above all, Whastapp. Thank you.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
    1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.
    2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
    3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
    http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
    4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.
6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.
If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • No BB service is working on my BB torch 9800

Hey, I have a problem with my BB torch 9800. I couldn't ever make BB messenger, Internet services, Facebook or any other app work.
I've been told the problem is that the phone was modified in order to make it work for any services provider, (Originally it only worked for Claro Argentina) and so BB has blocked my pin or so... that's the reason why no internet service or BB app works for me.
Is this right? if so, is there any way I can make it work again?.
I only can make calls and text, the smart apps don´t work at all.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
There's nothing to add to your BB per se. Using the BB-specific services is a matter of your carrier providing those to you. And there are some things that must happen for them to do so.
Any BB can be used on any carrier that runs the same radio frequencies that the BB is capable of (and I've no idea if your's are such). But, to bring a BB onto a carrier network that they did not sell to you, there are several hurdles to cross:
    1) The carrier must say "yes" to the fact...they own their network and have every right to say what devices will be allowed to connect to it. If they say "no", then that's the end of it.
    2) You must be sure that your BB is properly unlocked from it's originally manufactured-for carrier...see this helpful thread for details:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/General-BlackBerry-Functions-and/Unlocking-your-BlackBerry-Gu...
    3) You must get all of your voice level services functioning on the carrier, before you even try anything about data
    4) You must subscribe, from the carrier, to an adequate data plan to enable the BB-proprietary services you desire
This may be where your problem is...if, for instance, your BB remains configured into some other carriers BIS system, then no other carrier will be able to create a proper BIS account for it
5a) If the carrier directly supports your specific model BB, then you can proceed with registering the BB onto their network, generating the proper Service Book delivery to your BB, and proceeding to function.
5b) But, if the carrier does not directly support your specific model number of BB, then the challenges are much greater as most carrier systems will not deliver, to the BB, the necessary service books to enable the BB-proprietary data services, even if you do subscribe to them.
So, depending on all of that, your BB may or may not ever fully function on that carrier network. It can be quite tricky to accomplish, especially if 5b applies. So take a look at all of that and decide how you wish to proceed. Most folks wind up just buying a new BB if 5b applies.
What you say is possible, but there are several other possibilities as well. Please check all of the above, including contacting Claro to be sure that they have fully released the BB PIN from their system.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Torch 9800 shutdown when on 3G

Hi, Been searching a solution. Hope this will help...
I hv been using the Torch 9800 for about 1.5 yr. Recently, it started to shutdown unexpectedly, evenif battery is still at 90% or so. Here are the my current config:
    6.0 Bundle 862 (v6.0.0284, Platform 6.4.0.120)
    3G Bands 1,2,5,6
The most recent Apps update was Facebook (3.1.0.17). But the issue started just before the last Facebook update. I have minimum apps downloaded (<10), and I do not download music etc. Did a SW update check and got a confirmation that the Torch SWs are all up to date (from Phone/Software Updates). Storage is about 50% filled for both buit-in & media card.
Most of the shutdown happen unexpectedly. No warning or whatsoever. There were a couple of incident where there was a brief msg pops up indicating the battery power is drained.
While debugging the issue, I notice that the shutdown only happen when I was on 3G. Knowing that 3G consume more power, I suspect it could be a battery issue. But serching online, it doesn't seem necessary a battery issue. I do not want to spend $$ on a new battery and not solving the problem. The physical appearence of the batter looks perfectly good (no deformation or any sort).
For the past one week or so, after the device was shut down. I normally do a battery pull. But it didn't help at all. After leaving the battery out for a minute or so, and the long reboot, once on 3G, it will go down again within a minute or so. If I turn off the 3G immediately after boot up, and continue to use WiFI, then it will stay on. But once I turn 3G back on, it will go down again, especially when I running the browser.
    Hope you can help...

    Hey kytham,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
To determine if this a software issue, I suggest performing all the steps in this KB article and test out the 3G prior to restoring any data: www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320
If the issue persists, then I suggest you contact your network service provider for repair/exchange options.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • Torch 9800 stuck on Reboot

I recently downloaded the new BBM app, and the icon disappeared from my phone.  I tried rebooting several times, and it finally appeared, but it wasn't called BBM, rather net_rim_   something.  When I clicked on it, it said "missing resource files" and wouldn't load.
I also noticed that my BBM connected apps (Facebook, etc) were not loading properly.
So - I backed up my BBM contacts, and deleted and re-installed, but there was no icon again.
I checked this forum, and found a similar problem, and the solution was to check if the software needed updating, which would fix the problem.
I checked on my Torch, and it said there was an update available, so I downloaded it.  It downloaded fine, and then asked if I wanted to install it, and gave a warning message that it might take 2 hours or more.  This was fine with me, as I was going to bed soon, and wouldn't be using it.
Before I went to bed, I noticed that it was rebooting.  I figured I would just leave it and go to bed.
When I got up this morning, I noticed it was still rebooting.  The white bar would go all the way across, then it would go to a white screen,  go black again, and then start over.
I checked the forums again, and found a similar issue, which said to pull the battery and replace it.  Did so, and it didn't work.  I have tried several times, and even left the battery out for 2 hours, in the vain hope this might work.
I tried connecting to BlackBerry Desktop to do a restore, but it can't connect to the phone, because it is stuck in reboot.
    Any suggestions?

  • Camera - Torch 9800 - Unable to capture the image

    Hey everyone!
Had a torch 9800 for 18 months now and always been working fine... until today.
I went to use the camera and it all seemed to open up fine but instead of seeing what the lens sees the screen was black. The centre focus [ ] was there and I could zoom back and forth just a black screen.
When I click for a photo I get a message " Unable to capture the image "
I have searched the web and found nothing conclusive. Battery pulls, a full wipe and installation of the o/s have made no difference to it's lack of function.
Does anyone out there have a suggestion?

I am having the exact same issue.  I also tried rebooting, taking out the battery and sim card and cleaning out the back, alas no difference.

  • Torch 9800 ''email set up icon not responding'' ... unable to edit or set up email accounts.

Torch 9800, Network provider, O2 UK.
Although my BlackBerry service with O2 is connected and working as normal, I am totally without email on my Torch 9800. I have owned the Torch 9800 since March. All has been well until last week when I changed the password on one of the 3 email accounts I had set up on my device.  This password change left one of the accounts unable to send or receive mail, and is also what lead me to discover that I could not enter email set up on my device or via my network providers website ( www.o2email.co.uk ) .
I have spent hours on the phone with O2 discussing this issue. The usual checks and procedures have been carried out, battery pulls, checking settings etc and the service books have been deleted and resent several times. These actions have not resolved the problem but instead led to the loss from my device of the other 2 email accounts which were working correctly but have now disappeared into thin air. Having tried all possible solutions with O2 I now come here looking for an answer.
When I visit my Network Providers BlackBerry mail service trying to create an account using my pin etc,  I am without fail getting a pop up box containing  the error message ''Your account is not accessible via HTML browser. Please use your devive to access BlackBerry Internet Service''  !?  The result is the same whether I log in from my device over 3G or Wireless, or from a PC (have tried several browsers) .
On my device, when I click on the Email Accounts icon from the setup menu nothing happens, no response at all. I have tried many times and there is just no way to set up or edit mail accounts. I am without mail on my device and growing increasingly short of patience.
I am now hoping somebody here can offer me some advice on how to resolve this issue. What use is a BlackBerry without email capabilities ? I see from researching email set up problems on the Torch 9800 that I am not alone here so if somebody at BlackBerry is listening ? If this is a Torch 9800 issue then I am sure you will be doing all you can to resolve this but in the meantime PLEASE help by offering a solution to the issues I have mentioned.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums, bs342!
Well, since you searched the forums, you are undoubtedly aware that the problem you report is unfortunately a common one these days.  The good news is that RIM is definitely aware of and working on the problem.
First, let's try something on your computer.  What browser are you using?  Your problem there might just be as simple as clearing cache in your browser, then closing and reopening the browser to try the website again.
If that doesn't work, try this:
From your device's browser, go to mobile.blackberry.com. Select your country of choice, then go to Communicate>Email. Scroll down to Other Personal Email and click on Integrate Now, then Launch Email Setup. You should be able to integrate your e-mail accounts that way until RIM has fixed this issue.
Please let us know how it goes!

  • No longer able to locate the Twitter icon anywhere on my Torch 9800

I have Twitter version 4.0.0.15 installed on my Torch 9800 and have been using Twitter frequently for the past six months or so. For some reason I can no longer find the Twitter icon anywhere.  Not in "All", "Favourites",  "Frequent" or Downloads.  I have tried uninstalling, re-installing, pulling the battery for a reboot (both with the Blackberry turned ON as well as with it OFF),  all to no avail.  This just started the other day.  At about the same time, or shortly before this problem started, I upgraded the News/sports app "Canoe".  Thinking that it might have been this upgrade that is causing the problem, I currently have Canoe uninstalled and went through the same procedures but have been unable to correct it.
Has anyone had a similar problem?  If so, how did you correct it?  I miss using Twitter.
