Facebook Virus?!

Today i got a message from a friend that had a link and saying i found a video of you. i stupidly clicked on the link and it redirected to some adult friend finder webpage so i quickly closed it (embarrassing)
I then heard that these kind of messages on facebook are viruses so im starting to panic if i somehow affected my mac. even though nothing weird has happened i and wondering do macs get viruses and is there something to purchase to prevent stuff like that happening.

no, there are no os x viruses. even if this was a link with some kind of virus (which it wasn't btw, it was clearly just spam) it would be a windows virus and it could do absolutely nothing to your mac.
and is there something to purchase to prevent stuff like that happening.
don't bother. right now there are no os x viruses, spyware or adware. there are a few trojans but those you have to download and install by hand and provide your admin password in the process. you've done none of those things.

  • Facebook virus scan

Whenever I try to log in to facebook it tells me my account is locked because my computer may have a virus. Does apple offer a free virus scan or do I have to purchase won. I thought Mac weren't supposed to get viruses?

    This is not malware. See:
Facebook isn’t letting me log in and is telling me I have a virus!

  • Why does Facebook crash

I think I have a Facebook virus, every time I share a post it crashes, if someone shares a post in my newsfeed it crashes. how do I fix this?

    Patty...
    Very unlikely it's a virus.
Try uninstalling the Facebook app then reinstall.
Press and hold the FB app until all the apps jiggle then on the FB app tap the x then tap Delete.
Then go to the App Store and re download Facebook.
When you're done, restart your iPad.
If that didn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    Try Facebook.
No data is lost from a reset.

  • I know I've heard that iPads/iPhones can't get viruses but is it possible that they can? While using my iPad, it keeps going in and out of apps. On Facebook, status and profiles keep getting clicked and it keeps zooming in and out. Can anyone help

I Have an iPad mini, iOS 8.1. When I'm on my iPad, it keeps going in and out of random apps. Going to settings is the worse. As soon as I click settings and it opens,it starts clicking different things and tries turning on and off settings! In Facebook, profiles and status get clicked. The screen zooms in and out multiple times. It reminds me of when you call the help desk for a computer or a computer at work and they gain access and move around clicking and you're doing nothing. Basically things are being clicked and I'm not doing it.....can anyone help?

At this point, I would go for reset to its factory default condition, using the iTunes program to get a clean system install. That way you'll clean everything out and just have it set up the way it would come from the factory. You'll need to do your backup (on the iTunes program too) and be sure you understand which stuff will be saved and which will not (from the links below). Also turn off any anti-virus program you may have on your desktop. Then when you reset it to the factory default condition, don't restore your backup just yet ... until you check it out without your data put back on it. Verify its operation first, to make sure that you know it's okay. Hopefully everything is okay at that point, otherwise you'll have to take it into Apple to check it out for any hardware failure.

  • I was told I needed to run a virus scan before being allowed to reinstate my facebook account. What is the best way for me to download a free, but 100% safe virus scan for my iMac?

Is there a virus scan download from Apple.com that I should use to clear my iMac before I download the latest update to Mevericks and get a clear slate to reactivate my facebook account? Thank you.

You may have been the victim of a potential scam or responded to a pop-up trying to sell anti-virus software.
How on earth would Facebook know you have a virus - not least because there are no viruses that can affect OS X.
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • How do i get rid of the ipad 2 tester virus on facebook?

A few days ago I was using the Facebook app on my iPhone 4 and noticed that I had a picture of an iPad 2 in my Wall Photos... turns out that I had 85 copies of the same picture! All of them had captions about being a tester for the iPad 2. I immediately started deleting the pictures, but I switched to my desktop because I figured it would be easier. Oddly enough, the photos didn't appear in my account at all.
At that point, I was able to conclude that the virus/spam/malware was local to my iPhone.
I had a friend try to view my pictures on his mobile device, and again, he couldn't see any of the ipad spam pictures. Weird. I've deleted all but 14 copies of the iPad picture, but the rest can't be deleted. I also tried looking up info on Safari, but my searches get redirected.
I'm really surprised by all of this. The virus is not affecting my phone in any other way, BUT I WANT THE PICTURES OFF!
Should I just restore my phone? Is it likely that the creator of the virus wanted the user to restore the phone to somehow spread the virus?
    PLEASE HELP!

For the record, I haven't jailbroken my device. Also, I understand that it's the standard that "Macs don't get viruses," but if they can be written for Mac computers then they COULD be writtten for iOS devices.

  • A virus called "flash player pro" has entered my iPad.  I cannot access Yahoo, iTunes. Or Facebook.  How do I get rid of the virus?

A virus called "flash player pro" has entered my iPad.  I cannot access Facebook, Yahoo, or iTunes.  How do I get rid of this virus?

Your iPad does not have a virus unless it is jailbroken. Close all apps nd reset your iPad. Clear Safari as well.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data.
Closing apps in iOS 7 works like this. Drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Since 31.0 update I cannot access Google or Facebook. I'm on a MAC and do not have firewalls or virus protection software

    I'm on a MAC OS X version 10.9.4

I have no Firewall set up
I have no security software or virus protection software
Since my browser automatically updated to Firefox version 31.0 I cannot access:

Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:
*'''Windows/Mac''': Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
*'''Linux''': Run ''firefox -safe-mode'' in the Terminal/Konsole
If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.

I have been having trouble with facebook thinking that I have a virus or malware as I am posting on the games I play. I have an antivurus on my computer and it does not detect anything.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

  • HT1430 Possible virus on safari and facebook?

I may have a virus on iPad can't connect to Facebook at home and when on safari some sites are interfered with how can I clean the iPad up?

Clearing your browser cache would do nothing against a virus.
There are no viruses for iOS.
What happens is a website is either shady or has been hacked so they place a cookie in your browser.
Your browser then keeps displaying a pop up or taking you to a site you don't want.
Clearing your cache gets rid of it.
It's annoying and inconvenient but it's not a virus.

It may not be a good soloution for a novice, but I have been using hosts files to block unwanted URLs for many years with zero disasters and lots of positive results.
As I noted, whenever I find a new "bad" site, I simply add the name to my hosts file. It takes a few seconds and then it's gone forever. I find no difficulty whatsoever.
No, it's not for everyone, which is why I gave no specific details; but for those who are interested and have the desire to learn about these hosts files, it is a very good way to avoid "bad" websites.
I also enjoy the "clean" view of a webpage when there are no ads showing at all. The page loads faster and  the distractions are gone.
I never realized how much junk I am supressing until I got my iPad and saw all those horrid ads that are blocked on my other computers.
Here is a typical result of properly using a hosts file:

  • Facebook IQ test -  worm?  Virus?

I'm new to the forum, so please excuse me if I didn't put this question in the right place.
This evening I was on facebook and a chat window opened from my niece. It said something about a test she took and that she didn't think I could beat her. It didn't sound like the typical phishing deal - it sounded like my niece teasing me and so, like a fool, I clicked on it.
CAUTION: DO NOT GO TO THIS LINK!
This was the link: apps dot facebook dot com/winnerwinners CAUTION: DO NOT GO TO THIS LINK!
I took the quiz, but at the end, it asked for my cell phone number in order to send me the results. Well, at least I wasn't enough of an idiot to do THAT. I just closed the window.
Afterwards, my niece told me that her computer had sent that same message through "chat" to 50 people. She said that one friend who opened it eventually lost a lot on his computer - pictures, video, etc. Her computer is a macbook Pro. The friend who lost all sorts of stuff has a macbook, too.
I've been searching and found something almost identical to this on Yahoo and it was a scam to get you to agree to some service that you would then have to pay for. But I don't see anything about viruses/worms like this that harm your computer.
Does anyone have anything on this or know if I should do something?
    Thanks!

Actually, I guess it's not just Facebook - I recently got an invitation from a friend (??) to join "Shtyle" (at least that is what I think it was called and appeared to be a knock-off of Facebook). She gave that site my personal and real email address (which I only use for personal emails); although I never joined and asked her to delete my email address, soon thereafter my inbox became bloated with more and more spam daily up to the point where I had to abandon it and create a new one. Spam stopped immediately, so it was definitely that site selling it. There should be some sort of accountability coupled with a hefty fine - that might cut down on this nonsense.
Edit: I just googled Shtyle and found some posts that reported this: when someone joins that, they are required to furnish their password for their Yahoo account/addressbook, so that might be how I got the Spam. If this is correct, let this be a warning: do not ever trust any site which requires you to reveal a password for another site.

  • Virus's From Facebook Apps.

    Hello,
A few of my Facebook friends got virus's on their pc's via Facebook. I was wondering of anyone knew of any risk to Mac users in terms of Facebook Applications - quizzes, silly games, etc.
I was also wondering if there is any programs that can search your computer for spyware, trojans, etc..
    Thanks !

Why do you think that blindly entering your username and password to install something would be "protected?"
How would that be set up?
Enter username and password to install software.
Please enter username and password again if you are really sure you want to install software.
Now, rub your belly and pat your head to continue with installation.
There is no way to prevent someone from self-inflicting injury, unless you put them in a straight-jacket and tie them down.
You must decide for yourself what you install. Even if a legitimate site tells me that I need a new version of Flash or whatever, I don't click on their link. I go straight to Adobe (or whatever company made it) and install it from the source.
Same thing for emails. I don't know of any legitimate company that will send you an email allowing you to click a link to update account information. If you get an email asking to update info for a valid account you own (I love the ones telling me to update info for a company I don't do business with), it is most likely a phishing scam. Go to the site directly using your valid bookmarks and you will find no such 'account maintenance' required.
Edit: I found [this article|http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/a/patchyourself.htm] which goes into long form on my above summary.
