Faces disappearing

Hello together,
using Aperture I stumbled upon a very serious issue - at least for me.
Coming from iPhoto I really appreciated the 'faces' feature. In Aperture faces that already have been named dissapear and I have to reassign the names to the faces again (and again and again).
At the moment I've got 53 faces on my corkboard and faces just suddenly disappear even with the 3.0.2 update.
I've tried several possible solutions:
• repair user permission (don't know the exact term in english aperture - I'm using the german version)
• database repair
• create new database
• starting with a fresh install
• updating to the newest version (3.0.2)
But nothing helped, the assignment of faces to names still disappears.
At the moment I've got 6848 pictures in the aperture library, all jpg's.
As a naming scheme I use: 'surname', 'first name' - for example 'Müller, Christian'.
Has anyone experienced a similiar problem and/or knows a solution?
If the feature isn't going to work I would have to switch back to iPhoto...

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I have found the only reliable way of using Faces is to identify some different faces when working at the project level, not the entire library.
Then when you go into the Faces view, use the button to "Confirm" faces - only click on the photos to select those that do belong to the face you are working on. Remember only use the Confirm faces button which is in the lower left corner of the panel that is displaying your correctly identified face.
Don't use the other methods like letting Aperture suggest a face and asking you to click on a checkmark, etc. It will seem to work but you end up doing the same actions repeatedly and it won't remember the changes the next time you start Aperture.

Newly created "Faces" disappearing or merging with another "Face."

Overall, I was fairly pleased with the accuracy of Faces. And after an exhaustive amount of time I had all my Faces setup, or so I thought.
I noticed upon relaunch my friend Audrey's Face had disappeared. I then went to her husband (who looks distinctly different) and her pictures were under his face. The only thing I could think of is when I filled in her name, full name and email I used the same email address for both people. Perhaps the files are being coded with that conflicting information and Faces is confused and doesn't know where to place them. So a day later I went back and straightened it out putting her Faces in her own group. But then it did it again, only this time "Russ" her husband disappeared and his pictures were under her face.
The only other thing I can think of is a conflict with Facebook. I do remember uploading a picture and having to fix a few tags when the image was in Facebook. I'm wondering if Facebook was sending back bad information to that photo that was confusing the entire Face group. Other than that I'm at a loss.
I've rebuild the iPhoto databases selecting all the available options to ensure a good clean file. But that didn't fix this problem.
So since this appears to be a bug I won't bother trying to fix the two Faces again until it's fixed. Does anyone know if I can disable Faces or have some sort of control over how it operates? I'd like to disable it without losing the Face groups already created so it doesn't screw up another group with this bug.

I had the same problem with having previously named and labeled faces over-ridden and given other names. But I'm not using facebook, so it has nothing to do with that. I have spent hours and hours fixing my faces albums, just to have the names changed and put in different albums the next time I look at them. What in the world could I be doing wrong?

IPhoto faces disappeared!

I have been slowly getting round to identifying the faces on iphoto and after a software update on the mac recently all my faces have dissapeared. The photos have remained, the events have remained and the places have remained, but the faces have all gone. Can anyone help?? I had logged close to 9000 faces which took a long time, so would like to know if they are recoverable. Note: I haven't backed anything up on time machine (Although I have got the photos backed up on an external hard drive and disks which were from when I had a PC) I was hoping that owning a mac would avoid nonsensicle issues like this!!!

Backing up to DVD using the Share -> Burn command will preserve Faces.
Before you buy a NAS make sure Time Machine will work with it. You don't need either a NAS or Time Machine to back up an iPhoto Library. Any external disk will do.
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

All photos disappeared from the corkboard of Iphoto, and when I try to put the new faces there,it does not register anything.The names appear under the photos,but the board remains empty.

All the faces disappeared from the cork board in my Iphoto.When I add a name to a photo it appears there,but nothing appears on the board,there is just the message,how to start.I had alrady lot of faces there and they suddenly all disappeared.I have no idea what to do, or how to start putting up the faces on the board

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

How to keep my iPhoto '11 Faces in Aperture?

I identified all the Faces in iPhoto'11 and when I imported the iPhoto Libary into Aperture 3.1.3 all faces displayed correctly in the Aperture Faces library category. However, if I later delete the iPhoto imported library (there are many duplicates in the two libraries), all the faces disappear in Aperture. It seems no matter what approach I take (create a new Aperture Library, import iPhoto library into it then merge with my Original Aperture Library) I still end up with a bloated Aperture Library containing the iPhoto Library and when I delete the iPhoto library all faces are gone.
It seems there should be an easy solution to retain the Faces, but I cannot find it in the discussion forums. Thanks, in advance, for any solution to this problem.

Since you are so expert about iPhoto, could you please tell me the following 2 issue I have since I switched (today...) from referenced to imported photo?
1) I imported almost 21Gb of photos. Now, the iPhoto Library is about 7Gb... If I am not wrong, this means that iPhoto's photos are not all stored in iPhoto Library but somewhere else... if I am correct, where??
2) Before abandoning referenced photos, I was synching my iPhoto library with iPhone and iPad by selecting photos which were already hardly modified, i.e. files of photo already modified. Now, as you say, I have the nice option to modify photos on iPhoto and be able to go back to the original photo if needed. Unfortunatly I had the bad surprise that after synchronization with my iOS devices, all the photos I have on them are the original one and no of them is containing any modification..... Of course there is something I am missing since this is not making any sense... but I cannot find the right way... Any help?? tnxs...

Faces is not remembering names

I am using Faces in Aperture 3. I converted one of my libraries across. It contains photos of several hundred colleagues often taken in groups. I wanted to name them.
1 How can I switch off Address Book interference?
I want the Faces pinboard sorted by Surname. When Aperture recognises the name I am inputting, it replaces what I type with just a First Name!
Workaround -- I am putting Surname_First.
2 How can I fix the autoprompt for names?
Whenever I type in McKenna, it changes the M to a j and gives me a garbage name. Similarly for a few other names. Keyboard is not the issue -- have swapped -- both are apple aluminium.
Workaround -- finish off name, then go back and edit in the correct few letters.
3 How do I stop Aperture from forgetting names?
I have laboriously entered dozens of names and tagged dozens of instances of each in the photos. Then, two different behaviours can occur...
i) The name inexplicably knocks of the leading Surname and underscore!
This happens to only a few names but, the behaviour repeats itself after renaming -- but not at once, it may take another half an hour before doing so. One example: Atton_Kevin kept reverting to Kevin.
ii) Particular Faces disappear. e.g. I set up Bond_Brian and Ahearn_John and Cirino_Caroline -- add to dozens of photos -- move on to other names -- and then, suddenly, they are no longer there and I have to re-enter them and re-confirm all the tags!
Can anyone help with any of these very annoying issues?

You can change the displayed name (which is used to sort them) in the "Faces" view corkboard by clicking the little 'i' in the bottom-right of the face. It sort of sounds like you're already doing this? But maybe in an odd way...? If you're not familiar with this 'info' window then it might help you to understand the face/address book connection and solve all your probs at once... I hope!

This seems to be a bug when the "Full Name" and the "Display Name" don't match (again, in the little info window you get from pressing the 'i' on a face in the cork-board). It matches against Full Names, but types out the text from the display name... remove full names (or change them to match the display names) and it seems to go away.

Not 100% sure but this sounds like you might be selecting the 'address book' entry from your auto-complete list, instead of the 'faces' entry. I've not experienced the behaviours you're talking about in #3 though so I"m not really sure what's going on...

Aperture remove integration with address book and faces

Is there a way to remove the Faces integration with address book?
Reason I ask is because there seems to be not a good way to integrate the faces with the address book unless there is? For example, in faces I probably have about 20 that are family and close friends. In my address book, I have maybe 200 contacts. When I face people in pictures, I don't want to choose from a list of 200. Plus I notice if I have a friend tagged already, they show up as my friend John, but show up in the list from address book as John B, so who do I pick? How can I just make it one? There are many people that I would want nicknames in faces for or like "Dad" instead of my dad's full name like I have in the address book.
Is anyone else having these issues? How to best integrate with address book or how do I remove the integration?

Even if I attempt to integrate the faces with address book by typing in the full name in the faces after click "i" in the face, then it combines it, but then the address book face disappears to blank with no picture.
very odd behavior, how are you guys dealing with this? Seems like some setting needs to be set otherwise I would think this issue would have been taken care of a long time ago by apple?

Router randomly reboots itself almost every night

I've been with Sky for a few months now and this is becoming an increasing frustrating problem. Everything is fine until, somewhere between, I think 10pm-2am, the internet would slow down and after a 2-3 mins - grind to a halt, the connection drops (smiley face disappears from router) before it re-establishes a connection. This doesn't feel like an interference problem as the connection does not just drop - it gradually slows down before reseting itself. At first I thought this was just a firmware check/update but surely this cannot be happening almost every single night? I've called Sky to run some line checks and everything seems normal. I'm already at the master socket and done the usual checks. Now I'm starting to think that somewhere between my router (SR102) and Sky, there is some sort of scheduled 'link refresh' which makes the connection reset itself almost every single night. Anyone with a similar problem - any advice much appreciated.

Mine is the same but reset randomly (Disconnect and connect) about 20 + time a day. Rang Sky and done all test, I am thinking it was the Sky hub (Router) might have gone faulty but they not offer to replace it and want to do more check.
Mine once on smily face in Amber, it sometimes doesn't turn back to white which mean broadband is not connected at all. It has been 1 week now like this.

All I can get is the Apple startup screen.

Worked fine all day, still has plenty of battery life. Part of watch face disappeared, so I tried to restart. No luck. Tried to reset. No luck. Suggestions?

I had a similar problem this morning. It cleared after I did a hard reset on both the watch and phone ( press both buttons until apple logo appears ). Just doing the watch didnt work. If this doesnt work, you need a new watch.

Since 4.2 update, photo is not what I shot??

I recently updated to 4.2. Today for the first time since the update I try the camera.
When I want to take a picture, I hold the camera in front of me, click on the button to take a picture, it freezes on the picture (let's say someone's face), then I hold my phone normally, meaning almost horizontally about stomach's height. After a few seconds, the frozen picture (of the face) disappears and I see for a split second a new picture of .. well the floor below my phone, which minimizes into the bottom of the phone and goes into my library. When I look at the library, I see a pic of the floor, but no pic of a face.
So if I want a picture of a face, I have to wait for the phone to freeze, then try to hold it in the exact same position for another 3-4 seconds, without knowing if I moved it or not (since the pic is frozen), and after those 3-4 seconds the phone is actually taking a picture and putting it in the library.
Does anyone know what this could be?

I have an older iMac running 10.5.8 that I use to hold my media. I am running the latest upgrades of the OS for iTunes and Airport. I am trying to use the "Home Sharing" (HS) function of ATV without success. I have turned on the HS functions in the ATV software as well as in the preferences (where I have selected the files to be shared, all of them) and pull down menu of the iTunes software.
The internet is accessed through a cable modem using an ethernet cable to Airport and another cable to the iMac. ATV is via wireless to the Airport. Signal strength to the ATV is 4/5 bars and deemed adequate when I run the network checking software on ATV.
Thinking that it using the gen 1 iPad might help, I have tried to use that instrument to kick start HS. After going through the process of setting up HS, I am asked if I want to access a library. When I select that option I am told to open iTunes, select and select the iPad, but nothing happens after that. No joy.
I have turned off and on the router (Airport) and iTV. (I have not turned off and then on the cable modem) I have restarted the base computer and logged off of and on to iTunes. Turned of and reinitiated HS using "remote" on the iPad. I have checked the IP address, which starts out 172.xx.xx.x and seems to be correct. ... still no joy.
The ATV will access the internet and play trailers, podcasts as well as internet "radio". It is just not recognizing the poor lonesome iMAC.
Sadly, this is the first time I have had trouble with an Apple product that I could not resolve.

TimeRemap Scripting problems???? Help

I created a timeRemap script for a characters head (face4) so that it would show suttle shadows on a characters face when the yRotation axes is rotated using a null object named "Face Center". When the characters head (face4) layer is rotated in the negative numbers of the y Axes, his face disappears after its at -7. Yet, everything seems to work fine when I go in the positive direction using the yAxes rotation.
The code I'm using is: timeRemap=timeRemap+(thisComp.layer("Face Center").transform.yRotation)/-25;
Can some one please assist me.

Three (3) frames have been remapped. The center is set at frame 1.
The head is nested in a composition with a total of 8 frames.
I used your code and it yielded better results. Instead of the head disappearing at -5 it disappears at -32 but when the characters head is resting in the center at 0 on the X axes the shadow is no longer centered
What could the problem be once the character rotates in the - negative direction on the Y axes?

Shadow from layer behind

I have an image of a block pary with 38 people. Naturally the image of some people had to be changed or deleted or added, etc. The first and last layers started out as duplicates of the whole picture.
I needed to remove the face of someone standing in front of green shrubs. To do this, I
a. created a mask on the first layer removing the the face in question
b. copied a area of green shrub lager than the face removed
c. put that on a layer between the 2 layers
and, voila, the face disappeared into the shrub.
However, the part of the shrub on the second layer, which was larger than the masked face, appears as a faint shadow on the top layer!!
This was very disconcerting!! In order to complete the picture, I was forced to make the mask on the first page exactly the same size as as the patch of shrub on the second page!! Hence, no overlap, no shadow!!
The obvious question is why does the faint shadow appear on the top page from anything underneath it???

(subject of another query yesterday) . I tried redoing it on
another, smaller photo with only 4 people. I could not reproduce it
in that photo(???).
Will try again in original group shot when I resolve the cursor problem.

Goblin-like file icons

Has anyone noted strange goblin-like file icons since yesterday?
All files not associated with an application in my App folder appear as a file with a very simple, b&w goblin-like bit image icon (wide eyes, little horns on top, face disappearing at the lower icon border) Style is old Mac OS like, definitely not like OS X icons. Can't attach an screen snapshort, shame...
The icons only appear on my network-drive files, not on the MBP built-in drive.
Ran virus scans (ClamXav) - showing anything unusual. System working fine, files themselves are fully ok - can be associated manually with an app. and then open without problem.
My impression is it's a helloween hoax or something alike - but then others should be seeing this as well.
Anyone...?

You have posted in OS 10.5 Leopard > iChat and iChat Sharing.
However you don't seem to be posting about iChat.
Are you using a specific app to open email or s this a web based Mail page ?
(I can be really dense about other things not about iChat )
If I knew more I might be able to point you in the right direction.

When I try to access a picture from i photo the picture will come up and then quickly the screen goes black and there is a white exclamation mark. Also when using faces and scrolling down pictures some disappear very quickly after a brief look.

When using i photo and trying to pull up individual photos - the photo will appear and quickly disappear only to be replaced by a black screen with a white explanation mark. This happens with all of my photos. Has anyone had this problem and if so what can be done to fix it. I did not select this graphic to be added to my i photo pictures - the blace sign with the white explanation mark. Also, when scrolling down photos in faces some of my pictures disappear after a quick view.
Thanks for any help you can provide. It seems like something has gotten into my i photo picture account?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...

In my library for faces all names are disappeared

Hello I have problem with my iphoto.
Before I can write a name for any faces in all my photos. I was also able to add name in photos for any faces.
Now I can no more and in my library all names are disappeared.
Can anyone help my for my problem ?
