Faces Greyed out in iPhoto

I have gone through the current discussions looking for an answer but haven't been able to find a solution.
Since rebuilding my iPhoto library (15000+ photos) I have been unable to detect faces with newly imported photos - add a face is greyed out when you use the info box. Detect faces does not assist.
Thanks for your help in advance.

You've got a damaged library.  Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If not then it is you old library that's the problem.
In that case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Buy book is grey out in iPhoto and cannot buy book

You get the best help by giving as much information as possible, not as little as possible. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance.

  • Greyed out Face tagging- Still!?!

I have a library of 15,000 photos.  I would say only 1/16th of them have face tags.  I have done library rebuilding.  I have been on the phone with support to try their "Solutions".  I see no spinning wheel next to faces like it's actually working to find more.  However, iPhoto continues to write 387mb to my drive every minute while open.  I am assuming it is finding photos to face tag, but I look through and there isn't that many new face tags.  Terrible that it takes that much space to tag a face.  I have left my library open for about 6 months now and it's still writing and writing to my drive and tagging photos is still greyed out on a majority of my photos.
I want a real answer from someone who is intimate about the program.  If this program was made for a library of 500 photos then just friggin tell me and I will move on!
Does anyone know a proceedure that will fix this issue and force the faces to work properly?  Quickly identifying missing faces and allowing tagging of all photos in libraries this large.

So, what solutions have you tried? It saves time for everyone if you tell us all the things you know already won't work.
There's a question that might yield useful answers. You have provided no details at all, not even the most basic information such as the version of iPhoto, where your Library is stored and so on.
And yes, I would happily say everything I have already written to your face. Frankly, your frustrations with Apple Support are of no interest, nor is your unhappiness. I don't work for Apple, no one here does. But I know something of iPhoto and am often happy to help other users. That said, users who simply whine and are argumentative soon prove tiresome and I quickly lose interest.

  • HT1176 I am trying to add my iPhoto library to files to be backed up on time machine. I am told to click on the Options Minus butto, but it is greyed out. What is the solution ?

I have been trying to add my iPhoto Library to files for time machine backup.
I was instructed to click on the Options minus button - but it is greyed out and not functional.
    What is the solution ?
Your help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Roberto Kay

You can "see" the iPhoto library in Time Machine backups, but you cannot "open" the library or "browse" the contents while you are in Time Machine.
Apple makes you restore the entire iPhoto library to another destination...like your desktop....if you want to retrieve a few older images that you may have deleted by mistake.
This is a convoluted mess, but unfortunately, that is the way it is.
See Pondini's excellent, detailed information on this:
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
You might also want to post in the iPhoto support area to see if the experts over there might have a workaround for you. I cannot find one, but I'm not an iPhoto expert.

  • IPhoto won't open, gives me an error message and the icon is greyed out on the dock

My iPhoto icon is greyed out on the dock and wont open. When I click on it it says it may be damaged or incomplete. Went to All Images and the photos are still in there. Went to aplications and the iphoto icon looks normal. Clicked on it and got the following error message. "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Do you want to quit and use the latest version of iPhoto, or do you want to create a new photo library?" There is a quit button with the message, but nothing to allow me to create a new photo library. So neither my wife nor myself have tried to upgrade iphoto. Not sure how it got a newer version. It was working fine a few weeks ago. Anybody have any ideas how to fix or restore the icon and iPhoto without losing pictures?

    Hmm.
Rather than assume the account is "kinda" damaged, I would instead work on the basis that something in the account is damaged, and - as iPhoto is working correctly in the other account - that something is specific to this account.
So: Check on things that are specific to the account:
    The Libraru
    The plist files
    The Cache files
    are obvious approaches.
In the case you describe an awful lot of the time the issue is with the Library. This simple test will tell you if it is:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If you can make a new Library and get it to work, then the issue has to be with the old library.
    In that case:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I use iphoto 8.1.2 on OSX 10.5.8. some of my events are greyed out, showing no images.

As outlined briefly above quite a few of my events in iphoto have appeared 'greyed out' when ive restored them from the trash. I was trying to back up my iphoto library, with no proper knowledge, and I think this may have caused the problem. I dragged and dropped my original iphoto library into a non time machine external hard drive. I then went back to the original and sent the majority of photos to the iphoto trash (about 12 thousand photos). When I tried to delete them from the iphoto trash it wouldnt allow me to do it - something ive read is quite normal for that amount of photos.
After this i read more about multiple iphoto libraries so decided to restore all these 'deleted' photos back to iphoto so i could sort things properly (im ultimately wanting to have one large iphoto library on my non time machine external hard drive, then have a smaller, more current, iphoto library on my internal hard drive).
When i did this about half of my events were greyed out, and so were the images in the events. although the information assigned to the individual event, such as number of photos and event name were still correct and clearly showing. Why has this happened?
My only thought is that when I tried to delete the photos from my iphoto trash initially this could have messed it up some how. The majority of events that have been affected are my older events, but even some brand new ones are greyed out too.
I would realy apreciate any advis on this, the photos ive lost are very importat to me so im fretting alot.
    Thankyou in advance
    JAB

I did try that yes, and it had resorted to the same version that was on my internal hard drive. Im not sure if ive done something wrong at some point in the past while trying to sort it all out - the situation suggests I have?
Essentially the two iphoto libraries I have are the same (one version now just has my attempt at restoring the files from iphoto trash, the other version has the photos still in iphoto trash).
Im at a loss knowing where these files have gone/ why i cant access them if the info for those files is still showing?
    Thanks for your continued help!

  • IPhoto folder (saved on external drive) greyed out

Help!  I have recently purchased a WD My Book external (cloud) drive.  About a month ago, I moved my iPhoto library there, and everything was working perfectly.  I've just tried to open iPhoto, and it's not automatically loading that library.  When I try to navigate to the external drive to select it, the iPhoto folder is there, but it's greyed out...and it won't let me select it.  (I have the WD2go app on my phone, and can see that my photos are still there...phew!)  I have restarted both the external drive and my laptop.
I'm still a relatively new Mac user...and am very new to the world of external hard drives/networks/clouds, etc.
Any help would be really appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

iPhoto keeps it's iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder, it's really not designed to be moved.
So what happens is iPhoto opens up and it's program looks for it in the Pictures folder and it's not there. It likely created a new one in the Pictures folder with nothing in it.
I don't know how to tell iPhoto to look on the external drive, change to that  location,
But I can tell you the iPhoto Library (on the external drive too) is actually a folder, right click on it (or control click) and a menu pops up with "open package contents" and inside is a folder called Originals with all your pictures inside.
Post your question in the iPhoto forum and they likely have a few cool tricks up their sleeve.

  • Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out   can't be selected. What went wrong?

    Must have done something wrong..
    1.  formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine.  Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
    2.  moved iPhoto library to new external disk
    3.  Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
    4.  Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected.  Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto.  A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry?  Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    Then try select it again.

  • Iphotos are greyed out

Imac has been very slow and hanging and crashing. After a software re-install at apple shop, my pics in iphoto are greyed out in event mode. any advice?

With that amount of information, no.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • Iphoto has greyed out events with 0 photos

Perhaps this is baby steps but I've got istream up and running on my macbook air.
At the moment I have pictures taken in November which have events that are greyed out and say 0 photos. When I click on them the photos appear but I don't know how to make sure that they are going to stay?  Have I exceeded the 30 day stream time but I these are in the last 1000 photos?  If so, what to do to bring them in permanently?
My next step is to break down my huge library on my old mac and bring it over here and pitch it. That library is more than 60GB so I will want to move the meta data and whatever labeling etc I have done on my old iphoto.   I tried file export but I lose the event clustering so I think I have to chop it up into little libraries and then move those over.  I don't have a need to merge libraries after that.
    Am I making sense?

  • Iphoto greyed out when trying to upload photos to Facebook - Help!

As my title indicates, my iphoto is not accesible for uploading.  Its not just Facebook, I tried uploading pictures to Shutterfly and the same thing happens.  If I try to upload directly from iphotos none of the pictures are selectable.  If I try to go to the shared folder and select pictures and then scroll down to iphoto library, it is greyed out and unselectable.  I don't think that I have made any changes or done anything to cause this.  Please Help!  Also, I am relatively new to my mac.  I know how to get around my everyday stuff, but I'm not a die hard user that knows all of the jargon and secret key functions, so please me very specific with any help you can give.  Thank you!!!

    I had this problem too.
What I ended up doing was going into iphoto preferences deleted the facebook account I had. This did end access to the albums that I did have previously but once I did that the facebook option was not greyed out anymore. When I choose the facebook sharing option, I did have to give iphoto my facebook login info but the sharing to facebook from with iphoto works fine now.
I bet the login info for facebook in iphoto got munged. It would be great if iphoto would prompt you to correct your facebook login if it is messed up, like they do for your mail accounts without having to delete your old account.
