Faces, iPhoto 09?

i literally just bought a MacBook, yesterday! now face recognition in iPhoto? will i be eligible to get this for free?!?

Apple has usually run a retroactive upgrade for OS versions for purchases within 90 days of a new release. I am not sure about the bundled iLife.
Call Apple and ask them. It's worth a shot. If you are polite they will give terrific customer service. Explain you could not wait for the new iLife but feel that you should have the benefit of an automatic upgrade. Suggest you would gladly pay shipping costs for the package. If you are loyal as a customer, Apple has generally been loyal in return.

  • Faces - iPhoto loses connection between face tags and their rect

Recently I face significant problems with faces.
I mark faces of a person through the learning mechanism (where iPhoto displays faces to be confimed).  When done, the new faces of the person indeed appear his face page.
When I return, however, to the person page I notice that some of thumbnails of the person, present faces of another person.  When looking into the saud photo, it turns out that the face (that was previously tagged) is now tagged as untitled, while the list of faces in the info panel still list this person.  It appears that the program lost track of who is this person in the photo, and therefore present the face of the first (from left) face found in the photo.
I tried repairing the library, but this only led to cleaning all my recent taggings.  The problem reappeared when I tried tagging again.
    Anyt thought, ideas?
I read the suggestion to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but my library is rather large (bout 70,000 photos, several hundreds GB).

Have you read this Apple document regarding sharing a library with multiple users: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users?

  • Faces   Iphoto detecting areas that are not faces and can't add faces!!

Blast! Been working very hard on an erase and reinstall. One of the problems I was having with iPhoto was that when I clicked the Info on iPhoto it just shut down. Now I have reinstalled it and this time I can open Info but I cannot add a face. The only way I can add a face is for iPhoto to detect the face for me (which is doesn't do very well) and rename it from there. The face detected is probably not a face at all! If I try to add a face and move the box and name it - then exit from the photo - is goes back to no faces detected again, and adding a face again but not in the right place??? Very frustrating - any clues?

Thank you - Yes; regrettably so! It is finding faces that aren't there once I click add face. I move the box to the face and name. When I close folder and reopen the faces have gone. If I click add a face and it 'finds' a face in the right position and name it - then it will stay. It just doesn't like being told that the face it has assumed is a face isn't actually a face at all!

  • Iphoto crashes when it try to find faces.

Hello, I'm having a big problem with iphoto (well my cousin is), on her macbook, iphoto was working fine at first when I install ilife '09, then after I added some photos from a disk on 6 photos, after that when it tries to find faces iphoto crashes. and now ever time I go into iphoto its crash everytime you see it trying to find faces. I have try reinstalling it. I don't know what to do at this point.

Places is causing me no end of grief as well. For some reason, searches on Places are ridiculously long...or (since the update to 8.0.1) hangs the application altogether.

  • IPhoto on new Mac won't detect Faces

Have just got a new 27" iMac and assumed I was saving time just by copying the iPhoto library from my old iMac into my pictures folder and opening it. But I'm now having problems with recognising faces - iPhoto (on the new mac) is either not pulling up any new suggestions for faces already on my corkboard, or is just recognising one or two suggestions while I know there are . Other people already in my iPhoto library that I want to add to Faces are having to be added manually for every single photo. Is there someway of re-scanning my entire iPhoto library for general Faces recognition, or is there a preferences file or folder I should have transferred over from my old iMac to make sure that people already in the iPhoto library I've transferred onto my new iMac will be recognised and not be so time consuming trying to add them to the corkboard. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I was saving time just by copying the iPhoto library from my old iMac into my pictures folder and opening it.
That wasn't "saving time". That's the only way to migrate a Library from one machine to another. Anything else means starting a new Library over from scratch.
To rescan your entire Library would require removing the Faces you have.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • IPhoto freezes whenever I try to add faces...

I am running the latest version of iPhoto (iLife 11, all updates, etc.) on 10.6.7.  I have a top of the line MacBook Pro i7 (purchased in March 2011) with 8 GB RAM and 512 SSD.  For whatever reason whenever I try to add faces to my photos (either confirm or define a face or add a face) iPhoto decides to freeze up and spins the beach ball forever.  I go to Force Quit, iPhoto is "Not Responding" and I have to force quit iPhoto.  I can do this 5 times in a row, same thing every time.
Is anyone else experiencing this?  It's REALLY annoying and I'm worried that every time I force quit iPhoto I'm corrupting a file or the database, etc.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    -Keith

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Improving iphoto faces recognition for babies by using birthday data

Just wondering about some ideas for improving faces suggestions. If faces knew the birthdays of people, it would not suggest the 2nd or 3rd sibling - for example in photos dated before they were born.
Just going through a large library and organising it for the first time in iphoto. It's not surprising how many baby photos of siblings of the same family it mistakes. The incorrect suggestions could easily be decreased, for the first few years in particular, if iphoto knew the date those people were born and checked it against the date of the photo.
Likewise if it knew the city or country which people lived in or had visited (with dates of visit etc.), it could provide more accurate suggestions, assuming you had already entered places data for photos.
If iPhoto knew birthdays, it could perhaps increase the probability of suggesting this baby or it's parents etc - assuming it knew these things, and i guess this could involve linking in with a genealogy program, or entering some similar basic data into iPhoto.
Overall, this could save some time and allow more ticks than retypes for faces suggestions. It wouldn't take too long to enter in very basic data for people coming up regularly in photos, and could save a lot of time with faces.

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback for feature suggestions. That's the route to the developers.

  • How do you choose a picture from your iPhoto library for a contact in Address Book ?

    Hello,
I have contacts on my Address Book application for which I would like to set a picture from my iPhoto library.
However, when double-clicking the picture square and select Choose..., I cannot access any pictures from my library. I can't even double click the library to show package content.
I would really dislke having to drag each picture on my desktop and I believe there is a way to easily access the iPhoto library for this. I just couldn't find the solution.
    Thanks in advance,
    Julian

I did it like this: First, you should have assigned names to Faces in iPhoto - these names should match the respective ones you use in addressbook (like John Smith each time, not John Smith in iPhoto and Johnny S. in Addressbook). Then, in Addressbook, double-click the square for the photo as you did, but then do not click on Choose but rather on the small Faces icon on the bottom of the popup window. Addressbook should now provide you with all the "faces" iPhoto has for this name.

  • Photos from Canon EOS 300d crash iPhoto'11?

    Hi everybody,
I need help with iPhoto: iPhoto closes when working with photos or after import of photos (jpg AND crw) taken by Canon EOS 300d. No probs with other cameras (panasonic, iphone, Canon 450d, ...). Error occurs after installing the last raw update 3.8. Before everything worked fine (pics from 2003 on)!
    Nothing helps:
    - new library
    - new library with new user
    - deleting iphoto and reinstalling
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and greetings,
    Thorsten
edit: pictures are on HDD (local / NAS).

I suppose is NOT cameraraw 3.8 but something in Faces/iPhoto.
Did you already backup the Library?
I am not a specialist in iPhoto, so we wait for a specialist coming in.
    Second rate advice from me:
    reinstall iPhoto,
download a program to recover a corrupted Libray and run it, there is something in another thread about this- this last week).

  • With the new update, I can't figure out how to merge duplicate "Faces" files together, so I end up with one location per face.

With the newest update, I can't figure out how to merge duplicate files in "Faces" (iPhoto).  I have more than one file going for a face, and use to be able to click and drag them into merging.  Can't seem to do it now.  Can anyone please help?  Thanks

Are you talking about iPhoto or Photos? If Photos, do you mean that Photos has several files for the same person but they are labeled differently and you are trying to merge them as one? If so, then you have to rename one of the files to match the other one with the correct name.  If this is not what you mean then could you explain more clearly what you mean. To give an example if I click on Faces and Photos shows me all named faces in the top and on the bottom there are suggested faces that can be dragged onto a face in the top level to merge.  If you try to merge two face groups in the top level that are the same person but for some reason the faces are labeled differently you have to label them with the name you want to use and then they will automatically merge.

  • Option to add Aperture and iPhoto projects and albums to iPad disabled

I'd like to sync some photos to my iPad but the option to sync "Selected projects, albums, and faces" is disabled (and the equivalent for iPhoto).
    Anyone know why?

    Hello Tomtefan
Move the pictures out and then import them back in and try to add the face.

  • Detect missing faces feature explained?

    Hi,
When you select some photos, right click, and select "detect missing faces" is this supposed to make iPhoto rescan the photos you've selected and try to find any faces in the photos? As if you re-imported the photos? Or is it just trying to match faces it has already found during import with names on the 'cork board'?
The reason I ask is that I did an experiment of deleting many faces iPhoto found, followed by the "Detect missing faces" bit. None of the faces that were previously found were found again. If I re-import these photos, then the faces are found again.
    Cheers,
    Chris

Okay, I'll try to make my question simpler: Does this feature find try to find new faces in a photo, or try to name those it has already found?
As an aside, in the German version the menu item is localized as 'Fehlende Gesichter erkennen', which from a logic standpoint makes very little sense. I would think it could only recognize a face it has already found (ie the face is not missing). Seems like it should be either 'Fehlende Gesichter finden' or 'Unerkannte Gesichter einorden' depending on what the intent of the feature is.

  • IPhoto tagging issue

running the iPhoto 9.1.3, I want to tag a an image with pets in but when I remove one tag which for some reason is of his eye I remove and re-tag the image on his whole face iPhoto will put the tag back to around his eye and not as I re-tagged.
Is there a solution to this?
example of what I mean.... this is what iPhoto does: http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/5131/screenshot20110706at145.png
and I want this: http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5131/screenshot20110706at145.png but reverts to first image when I move to next image

You do realise that this is not designed for pets but for humans, and so you can get unexpected results when attempting to do what you are doing.
So, that dog does not look like a face to the sofware, but it sees something around the eye that looks like a face.

  • Get rid of face photos

There needs to be a way to delete all face photos from IPhoto library.  I let it get out of control (my bad) and now I have too delete each face manually.  That takes a long time if you have 5000 photos of a my friends's and family's distorted faces.

    iPhoto Library? or iPhoto Window?

  • No faces shown under "faces"

    Hello!
I'm using iPhoto 9.3.2 under OS 10.7.4 and ecperience the following problem:
When I click on "faces" on the left side iPhoto used to show me little polaroid-like pictures of faces of people I marked in my pictures.
No (I unfortunately don't recall after which update that happended) I just get the polaroid-like frames with a black inside.
When I pick one and select "photos" instead of "faces" iPhoto shows me all the pictures I tagged. But if I want to see just the pictures I have the same effevt as in the overwie - all black.
Can anybody gelp me with that?
    Thanks!

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions, if needed rebuild thumbnails and and if necessary rebuild your database
