FaceTime - choppy video and lagtime

are there any tips or suggestions to improve the choppy video and lagtime when using Factime?  Even when we're trying it in the same household, on the same network, its choppy and there's lagtime.... even worse when we're using it for our distant friends...
any help or suggestions is appreciated!
thanks

I have this issue as well.
Only way I know to fix it is to CMD + Q and quit the Chrome process entirely. I'm a web developer so it's super awesome when I have to kill my 20 browser sessions just to fix this issue.
I have confirmed this issue happens in the HTML 5 video player as well as in Flash video.

  • Choppy Video and Long Rendering Time

Just using iMovie for the first time since loading iLife 09. Two main problems:
    1. Video is very choppy. Using the same camera as before loading new iLife and never had the problem before. Noted a solution posted elswhere - "Clip adjustments, click on 'convert entire clip', give it a minute to convert, click 'done'" - only I don't have a "convert entire clip" option. I can do something with stabilizing but it takes 10 minutes to process a 30-second clip.
    2. Speaking of things taking a long time, I just started to share a project to iDVD - it appears it will take about 90 minutes to process a 5-minute project with a few transitions. Why is this? Not enough RAM/GHZ? It can't be the project because it's very small with very few transitions.
This is almost not worth it. Any advice on either issue? Thanks.

    Hi
First have you set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(if a comcast user use 500)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
    Restart iChat.

  • Choppy Video and Audio in Chrome after update to Yosemite

Anyone having the same issue as me? In Chrome my video and audio is choppy (play 1/2 second, pause, play again, etc). If I close Chrome (and quit all the way), and restart all is good for a few hours, then right back to the choppy playback (YouTube, Pandora, anything...). Only since updating to Yosemite. Any tips/suggestions?

  • Choppy Video And No Preview

This is very strange. Clips I've recently prepared in Arkaos which are saved into QT easily enough with all the normal options, play begin normal, then become very choppy & stop completely, when I select a portion of the clips to play AND will not show up or play in the preview window AT ALL when I mouse over the clips in the events or project windows. This is very strange.
Other QT clips, including older ones I've created in Arkaos work just fine in every respect.
I've used Animation and Video codex to save high quality 640x480 clips. Neither works. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've all the most recent upgrades to s/w, am on an intel mac book pro w/ 3 mb ram. I don't know if this problem would have existed in Tiger as I did not open this new IMovie until after installing Leopard.

  • Choppy Videos and poor playback quality

I have a problem with the TV shows im trying to play in itunes. The audio runs at the correct speed and sounds fine, but the video is choppy and wont sync with the audio that is playing at the correct. I thought the problem was with my computer but i recently restored my computer to the original factory settings with Vista. I Tunes is the only program that is giving me trouble with my video playback. Any Advise?

DFW, does your computer meet the minimum specifications for playing videos in iTunes (as given on the iTunes download page)?
2.0 GHz Pentium class processor or better
    512MB RAM
    32MB video RAM
If it does, take a look here and see if any of the tips help:

i hav the software on my c drive and in scratch disks preferences i have the rest on my 2tb external drive same as project. thanx in advance...........

Thanks for the follow up. Sorry that the news was not better.
As for project settings (project preset)....that should be set to match the properties of the media that you import. Only one project preset per project, so, if you have more than one format, you need to set priorities for the project, and then work everything else around that prime choice. But, for now, assuming all the project content have the same format.
The program is set up to have the project select the project preset based on its analysis of the properties of the first source you drag to the Timeline. If it cannot do that for some reason, it does not give you the closest project preset for what you need, instead it gives you its default NTSC/AVCHD/Full HD 1080i30 or its PAL counterpart if you are working in a PAL setup. You can always check to see what the project set. See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio (even if they look grayed out). You can view project settings there, but you cannot make significant changes in what has been set. So, you start a new project if the settings are not right.
The manual way for you to set the project preset....
    File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings
In Change Settings, change the project preset to match the properties of your source file. OK out of there.
In the New Project dialog that you see next, change the name of the project, and make sure to have a check mark next to Force Selected Project Settings On This Project. OK out of there.
Back in the Expert workspace, import your source media using the project's Add Media/Files and Folders.
If you setup according to my suggestions in post 3 and are still have previewing issues, then I think we should look deeper into the video card/graphics card. See Device Manager/Display Adapters to verify what your computer is using. And, then go to the web site of the manufacturer of that card to determine if you have the latest driver for that card.
    Please consider.
    Thank you.

  • Super Slow / Choppy Video and Audio / ?

    Hello Helpful Co-Users...
I am a fairly experienced film editor who has, in the last 2 years, begun working on small projects on iMovie. I am currently finishing up the third part of a three part project, and have come up to a problem I can't solve with any of the solutions I've already found on this forum: this 26-minute project is completely slowing my computer down beyond recognition. While the other two parts have, more or less, run fine (at 30:00 and 45:00) this project has recently begun to <really> slow the system down. Lags, choppiness, spinning wheel, the works.
I've done a clean re-install of 10.4.3, run Onyx, cleared iMovie bookmarks, cleared my QT Prefs, deleted preferences, run Disk Utility, done the 'Garage Band' trick I learned in this forum, and while these great tips have really got the machine working great otherwise, squeaky clean, this movie just kills.
Now, HERE's the rub: while the other two projects did use alot of CF/X crops, extracted audio, FX, and transitions, this one uses almost all cropped shots with of audio extraction (it's a sound-heavy piece, and I need reliable cross-fades, and there are lots of slowed down FX as well) that, I'm learning now, is possibly just too heavy of a burden for iMovie. It was working great, but then I just hit a wall. I wade around in the movie for awhile after a fresh restart, and then the wheel starts spinning, and the speed goes down to like
    .1 megahertz. Ouch.
My question is: have I really hit the wall? Is there a chance that I have a corrupted clip that's slowing everything down (something that was hurting a previous project)? If so, how can I best find this corrupted clip?
Is there a way to render these clips, FX, crops and transitions–-while still working in iMovie–-to help it run faster?
Is there a way of salvaging this film, whether by importing it into FCP? Or should I just kill some of the not-completely-necessary audio extractions and re-render the clips?
I invite your comraderie and expertise...I have a feeling there's something I'm missing that 2 days of diligent searching can't get at...
Thanks so much: and thanks for all the solutions that previous posts have helped me to uncover...

    Welcome to the forum, Brandon.
Unfortunately, I don't think anyone has discovered why this slowdown occurs. My guess is -- and it's only a guess -- that lots of extracted audio clips adds to the likelihood of it happening. If so, exporting the audio, then importing it should make the problem go away.
You would share the project to an AIFF sound file, then import that file back into the project and disable your other audio track. To export, choose File>Share>QuickTime > Expert Settings > Sound to AIFF.
Not ideal, for it makes the audio harder to edit. But if that's not an issue it might be a workaround.
This problem appears to be disk-related in some way. Sometimes moving the project to another disk solves the problem. Reformatting the disk has helped too.

You've obviously covered the bases on this. If you discover something that works, please let us know.
This bug is long overdue for squashing.

    Hello Laura&Graeme, Welcome to Discussions.
First off great job with what you have done. I have some suggestions below. One which you have done but want to ensure you know the full list of apple programs that may actually be in your system. So you can remove them all. Below is the first link to assist you as well as a text list of those Apps.

  • Preview problems--choppy photos and music

When I send my iMovie project (about 14 min long) to iDVD and then do a preview, the playback of both the video (just photos using the Ken Burns effect) and music is choppy in iDVD.
    Please advise.

I have over 5 GB of free space. Filevault is off. I've also trashed the iDVD pref file and when I reopen a iDVD file right after the trashing, I get a Encoding Settings Mismatch message. See message here.
    http://homepage.mac.com/belisles/Picture.png
There's an OK button and an Update button. Not sure which to press. I've tried both and nothing happens. Still the choppy video and music.
    Thanks.

  • Choppy Video/Audio with FMS 2

    Hello,
My internet group and I have been trying to get the bugs
worked out of our system so our Flash Media Server (version 2.0)
will work correctly. The latest issue under our load test was
choppy video and audio. The load test was to see if our network and
hardware could handle 15 concurrent connections and of course
something caused the test to fail. Our network and server engineers
say their stuff all checked out only used 20% of network bandwidth
at the most. The server barely hit 5% CPU usage. It has been
suggested a few different times to incorporate a buffer. I don't
really want to do this, because it seems to be a patch on a problem
somewhere. Plus, I also read that buffers in streaming video are
somewhat irrelevant because as soon as the user seeks forward or
backward the buffer is dumped, which would put me right back in the
boat with choppy video again until the server is able to establish
another buffer while streaming the video.
Here is some info on the video we used for test:
    - 400kb per second
    - On2 VP6 Codec
    - Frames per second (same as source) (video was ripped from
    dvd quality quicktime file.)
    - 96kbps audio
    - 720 x 480 video size (The reason we went so large on the
video is because we wanted to test a “worse case
scenario” if a video that size were ever requested we would
    know if it was possible.)
    - Running on Windows 2003 server and FMS v2.0
    Here are my questions:
    1. Shouldn't the FMS stream a video of this size to 15
concurrent connections without experiencing any kind of lagging or
    choppy video?
    2. Should I incorporate a buffer into the video to smooth
    over the choppy places?
    Thank you for your help!
    Eric

Good to know...I have to admit that it is a little difficult
to find good tutorials on this kind of stuff. I've spent the past 3
hours trying to find a tutorial on how to get the "dual buffer"
technique with FLVPlayback since FLVPlayback seems to be the option
that Adobe steers most people to use. Maybe because that's the
easiest way to get video up and running for new comers (like myself
to flash video) like the Spry stuff in Dreamweaver. I've never used
the Spry stuff because I hear it's bulk, plus I already know how to
create most of that stuff with only what I need. It sounds like Net
Stream is the way to go, but will require more work to get the end
    result I want.
Obviously, I don't know much about the whole streaming video
stuff, but I guess I'll be considered an expert if I can ever get
this FMS utilized properly and my Net Stream up and running. My
understanding when we bought this server was that it was pretty
much plug'n play and the FMS ensured smooth video playing with no
problems. I didn't know I had to do all this...
    Thanks again fmslove!

  • Choppy video exporting to 720p

Hi I am exporting video that was imported at 1080i uncompressed and exporting it to 720p as per the vimeo.com specs, I keep getting really choppy video and I have no idea why.
    please help!
    Thanks,
    Raph

I recently uploaded my first vimeo and also got a choppy video. It seems the early part of the video is choppy. When I play it on my mac it is fine, play it on my pc - not fine.
Let me know if you find a fix. The uploaded mov file plays fine on my mac also.

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.
