FaceTime difficulties - contacting the right device

Want to make a FaceTime call from my MacBook pro to a friend's iMac. However, I get him on his mobile phone. How can I specify which device I want to speak to him on?

Your friend has to specify that in each device's FaceTime Preferences. You cannot specify the device, unless you were to do so in collaboration with your friend by having him specify different email address contact information for different devices.
"You can be reached for FaceTime at..."

  • How to tell Facetime to contact a particular device?

I have Facetime on my iMac (27 inch with built-in camera, running OS 10.7.3).
If I try to use Facetime with my wife on her iPhone (where her number has a blue star by it), it connects and works fine.  However, if I try to use Facetime to talk with with her through her new MacBook Pro (using her email address as the contact), Facetime reverts back to the phone number and calls her iPhone.
How can I force Facetime to contact her Macbook instead of her iPhone?

OK, I think I figured this out by myself.  The short answer is that you cannot specify a particular device, unless you set up Facetime (or iMessage) only for that device.  If you have multiple devices with the same Apple ID, they all respond to an incoming iMessage or Facetime call.
In my case, I've set up my iPhone, iPad, and Macs to use Facetime and iMessage with the same Apple ID.  When someone wants to do a Facetime call with me, or send me an iMessage, all the devices respond simultaneously.  It's kinda funny to hear the Phone, iPad, and iMac going off, telling me I have an iMessage, or asking me to accept a Facetime call.  From there, I simply choose whatever device I want to use.
I would add that with iMessage, the way I have my gear set up, all the messages are synced, meaning I can be doing an iMessage chat on my iPad, stop for a while, and pick it up again on my iPhone -- the same message string will be in the Message app (synced by iCloud I assume).  Anyway, it's kinda neat.

  • Is AirPort Extreme Base Station the right device and reliable for my setup?

    hey guys,
    i got a 2012 13" macbook air, iphone5 and an 2012 appletv
ive also got two external usb3 2tb powered hdd's that i would to setup towards and use on my network.
i have videos/movies/files/music that i would like to access from the network,
so ive been looking at the extreme device and i can share via sb in the back x1 external hdd.
from what ive googled i can share more devices such as my x2 external hdd's via a powered hub, is that correct?
so my main question is..how fast is the read/copy/write going to be via through a hub?
will it lag/skip if i watch videos on my macbook or straight to my appletv, which supposedly i can do access aswell, is that correct?
just say video file will be 1gb only.. and im going to be only not even 5meters from the extreme device(network).
what transfer rate will it copy/write from and to from one device(usb3 external hdd via powered hub via airport extreme) to my mac?
what is the usb port on the back? 2 or 3?
does anyone have a similar setup or use an airport extreme device for this setup?
    and my last question is...
how reliable are these extreme device?
from what i read, these devices only last like two yrs and people have had alot of problems issue with faults etc....

Speed of read/write: if you're going by wireless, you're going to be limited by the wireless speeds.  Based on my usage, it seems like wireless N at 5 GHz tops out around 5-6 MB/s (40-48 mbps) with this router.  That's fine for video streaming, but will feel slow for heavy file transfer activity.
The USB port on the back of the device is USB 2.0.  As a reminder, USB 2.0 is rated for theoretical speeds of 480 mbps, although in practice they're much lower; regardless, it's much faster than the wireless protocols are capable of.  Your bottleneck will be the wireless.
I only use a printer with my USB port, so I can't give you any real-world experience with sharing hard drives.  You can use a USB hub to expand the ports, but it will need to be a self-powered hub: the Airport Extreme won't power devices through the port.  It's also worth noting that trying to use a network-shared disk as a Time Machine drive is a bit flakey; I've read a number of reports where people got it working, but then had their backups become corrupt with time.  I haven't read any reports of people having issues with using drives for purposes besides Time Machine, though.
As for reliability, it's hard to say.  Nothing lasts forever; you'll find people whose devices failed very quickly, and some who are using generation 1 or 2 devices that are still working just fine.  I haven't heard any reports of an usually high failure rate with Airport Extremes.  Operation-wise, my Airport Extreme (5th gen) is the most stable router that I've used, and I went through four or five other routers before this one.  It's the only router that I have not needed to reboot, even after months of uptime and heavy traffic that usually choked up my other routers.  I'm very impressed with it.

  • Is there any way for 2 bluetooth headsets to participate in a FaceTime call on the same device?

From what I can tell, one cannot use two Bluetooth headsets at the same time, using the built-in reciever. However, it seems as though one can transmit audio to 2 devices using the KOKKIA i10, but the deal breaker is: can one send audio using 2 headets? Is there some obscure version of the Kokkia that will reciever audio as well?

It sounds like you are using two independent libraries with a common media folder, whereas the plan would have been to ensure that both profiles were using the same library library database. Although you can place this within the Public folder I would normally create a shared library at the root of a drive, e.g. at X:\iTunes where X: is the drive that you want to use. See Make a split library portable for information on moving the library around back into a standard shape.
As for duplicates, Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See thisthread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning
to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Mac Book Air 13" the right device for occasionally editing photos?

    Hello!
I am owner of an iMac 24" and know I want to replace my three years old thinkpad. Mainly, I am using my iMac for editing photos. With the MacBook Air I also want to be flexible to edit my photos also during a holiday or in the train etc. Do you think there will be a problem to work with RAW files with the processors of the MacBook Air? And is there a big different between the 1,86Ghz and 2,13Ghz processor that would make any big changes on editing photos? I am working with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

MacWorld did a comparative evaluation of the October 2008 MBA with 1.86 GHz processor and the Mid-2009 MBA with 2.13 GHz chip. Their conclusion was that that 1.86 CPU was actually FASTER than the 2.13 in most applications.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/141296/2009/06/macbookairmid09.html
They speculated that the 2.13 chip was being throttled by Apple to control heat issues and that's why it tested SLOWER than the (supposedly) slower 1.86 part.
Have to wait for testing of these new MBA units to know if the same thing occurs. But, for the Rev. B and C MBAs, the 1.86 part was actually faster in real world use!

  • On FaceTime contact are on the left side of the screen...they use to be on the right side much better how do I change this listing to the right side?

FFace time contact listing are on the left side of the screen they use to be on the right side...why the change and how can I change the listings to the right side?

There doesn't seem to be a setting for that. As to why Apple made the change, only they would know.

  • I cannot receive email properly now. When I open mail, it says that is downloading about 1,700 emails. At the very end, it gives me my newest ones. But this takes a long time. I've contacted the Internet service provider and verified all the right setting

I cannot receive email properly on either my IPad or my IPhone. I have had them for over a year and they have always worked fine. Until three days ago, when they both started acting up. On the IPad, when I open mail, it says it is downloading about 1,700 emails. At the very end, which takes quite a while to get to, I finally get the most recent ones. The IPad is sending emails just fine.
On my IPhone, when I open mail, it says it is downloading 100 emails, but it doesn't do that. And it gives me no new emails at all. The IPhone is sending email just fine.
I have already deleted the email accounts on both devices and reinstalled them. I've contacted the Internet service provider and verified all the right settings. The Outlook email on my desktop is working perfectly.

WMV is a heavily-compressed format/CODEC, and the processing time will depend on several factors:
Your CPU, which is not that powerful in your case
Your I/O sub-system, which is likely a single HDD on your laptop
The source footage. What is your source footage?
Any Effects added to that footage. Do you have any Effects?
Each of those will have an impact on the time required.
The trial has only one main limitation - the watermark. Now, there are some components, that have to be activated, but are not with the trial, but they would be evident with Import of your source footage, if it's an issue.
    Good luck,

  • TS3510 I have 3 different apple devices using the same Apple ID and would like to use FaceTime to call from one device to the other.  Do I need a different Apple ID for one of the devices in order to do that?

I have 3 different apple devices (iPod Touch, iPad and MacBook Pro) using the same Apple ID and would like to use FaceTime to call from one device to the other.  Do I need a different Apple ID for one of the devices in order to do that?

I found this on a related question in the Community:
Yes you can do it. I do it with 4 different devices all using the same Apple ID.
You need to associate different email addresses for each device in order to use those email addresses as the "contact at" email address. The reason the calls are dropping on you now is that what you are trying to do is like calling yourself on your own phone.
You can also create new iCloud accounts on each device simply to use for FaceTime, but I'm guessing that the users of the other two devices have their own email addresses which will make this work for you quite easily.
Take a look at this for more information.
The seems to go against what Gail said and the issue you raised about buying dup apps was my first concern.  If this other post is correct, how to I set a different "contact at" in the iPod Touch?

  • Unable to synchronize the Address Book on the BB Device with Outlook Software 2010 Contacts

    Enviroment :
    Device Black Berry Bold 9700
    Back Berry Device Software V6
    Cause of problem :
On the BB Device there are 2 Adress Books with the same name.
The first one with 109 elements and the flag for wireless synchronization
The second, which is of most importance to me since it includes my business address book, contains 1837 elements and does NOT have the flag for wireless synchronization.
Whenever I  try to synchronize the BB Device with the PC , using Black Berry Device Software on my Windows 7 based PC and Outlook 2010 Application Software, only the first Adress Book appears active.
I tried to solve the problem through the BB Support Forum (see link below)
    http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB1...
and regretfully I found out that no solution are available so far.
This is a previously reported issue that has been escalated internally to our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available.
The suggested Work Around doesn't work.
Since both address books could be cleaned but not erased, it is impossible to delete the first address book and subsequently synchronize the right data .
I tried to synchronize the BB Device with the Windows contacts but the result is the same: the synchronization works only for the first (small) Address Book.
Another bit of info, to worsen the situation: last week the HDD (internal disk) on my PC crashed, therefore I lost all my data; as a result, the only correct Address Book  data available is inside the Black Berry device (larger list, which is the second, as stated above) , thus I absolutely need to recover all the 1837 addresses included, since they are vital for my business work.
I need your help to solve this situation caused by an evident Black Berry Software bug.
    Thanks in advance

I do not receive any suggestions to solve my problem.
After 6 month the problem is very urgent, my business address book is vital for my work.
I have only the copy on the Device Black Berry Bold 9700 and I absolutely need to have a copy of the address book on my computer.
Do you have solved the bug.
I need a quick answer and a final right solution
    Thanks

  • HT204380 It seems that my iPhone4S is unable to contact the FaceTime server. I am using a WI-FI connection. What is wrong?

It seems that my iPhone 4S is unable to contact the FaceTime server. I am using a WIFI connection. I cannot connect to others using FaceTime. What do I have to do?

    Hello carrwf,
It sounds like you unable to connect your Apple TV to the iTunes Store. I would use this troubleshooting from the following article to help you resolve the issue named:
Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4546
If you discover that you aren't connected to a network, the signal strength is low, or some of these settings are incorrect or blank, try the following steps:
Ensure that Apple TV is within range of your Wi-Fi router or base station.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable/DSL modem are connected to power and turned on.
Make sure other devices (computers, iPhone, iPad, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Check your Wi-Fi network settings on Apple TV:
Choose Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi and press the center button on the remote to display nearby networks.
Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list.
If your Wi-Fi network uses a password, make sure you are entering it correctly.
Restart your Apple TV by choosing Settings > General > Restart.
Try restarting your Wi-Fi router or modem by turning it off and then on again.
If possible, connect an Ethernet cable and verify your Internet connection. If you can connect to the Internet using an Ethernet connection, verify that your Apple TV is using the latest software by choosing Settings > General > Software Update. If your Apple TV can be updated, install the update and then try the steps again.
Disconnect and rejoin your Wi-Fi network by selecting your network on the Apple TV and then choosing Forget Network. Rejoin your Wi-Fi network after it disconnects.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

The machine could be repaired by a company that does circuit board re-soldering, since it is possible a heat-flex solder break on the main board may have caused either the processor or graphics chips to lose connection and that could manifest itself in a few somewhat documented ways.
There is an on-board RAM chip that may also have something to do with a kernel panic, if it no longer is functioning correctly; that is the non-removable one soldered on the board you never usually worry about.
Companies such as powerbookmedic, wegenermedia, and others can take in portable macs of vintage or newer (contact them for details on what they do, and how they accept work orders) for repair and can fix most anything; and have a parts inventory. Modern repair workstations allow the equipped service company to fix complex issues and they do troubleshooting. Sometimes the cost is less than a replacement logic board.
The links above may help isolate the general cause of a kernel panic. There are other articles in Support database including a deeper look into them.

Usually the issue is caused by hardware, especially if there is an indication of machine failure in the crash log or other screen image text.
A working last model MacBook (mid-2010) would be a better 'first mac' to have.
Hopefully you can sort it out.
If not, there likely are fair parts in it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How can i transfer my 'internet accounts' to a new(but already in use ) mac , so mail, contacts , agenda , etc. work exactly like on the older device?

i started using a new macbook pro 15" mid 2014.
    now i have a lot of different email adressen ( from school , gmail , hotmail , ... ) .
i tried to set them up manually , with succes on the gmail ones .  but hotmail doesn't work good, some don't work at all.
hotmail's contacts are missing in contacts app etc.
    really annoying.
so i was wondering if maybe i could just import my ' internet accounts ' in whole , to the new computer.  through maybe a time machine backup of the older device?
    is this possible ?
im talking about the 'internet accounts' not the user account.
    thanks in advance !

if you copy the iTunes folder from the old to the new Mac, your Touch will just continue to sync with iTunes as if nothing happened.
make sure you copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder).

  • Can I have one Apple ID for personal (music) and one for work (syncing contacts and mail)  on the save device

Between my husband and I we have 6 devices and we are only allowed to share our Apple ID across 5.  Some of the devices are for music and outlook and some are just for music - can I have a separate Apple ID for my mail and contacts.  ie. Can you use two different Apple ID's on the same device?

Oh maybe ipads and iphones aren't counted in the five

That is very strange... I wonder if it has something to do with the firmware or some sort of error. I haven't ran into this but at the shop I work at I've ran into several firmware errors on iPhone 4 all the way through the 5s. Maybe its something as simple as putting a different part of the code into iTunes... I know you can something of this extent. I would look up error 1669, I know you have tried a number of things but look it up on the forum and see what fixes are available so that you may be able to restore it properly without all this garbage you are running into. Just a thought for you.
