Facetime for OS X - cam always on

Hi Folks,
Is it just me of is your built in camera on your iMac or MacBook, or MacBook Pro always on when you are logged in to Facetime for OS X? I find that annoying and weird. I mean the camera should come on when you accept a call, or when you place a call, but not be on all the time as soon as you log in to facetime. That is - strange. Or is it just me?
Anyway, If you want to try it, install facetime for OS X, then log in, and you will see that your green light by your camera will be on and you will see yourself. I think that this needs to be fixed pronto, or I won't use facetime on my Mac - period.
Does anyone know a way to turn the camera off and only have it come on when you accept an incoming call or place a call? Please advise.
Thanks,
Martin
PS: Also portrait format and full screen options are grayed out. I don't like it when Apple tries to tell me that my camera is not HD or whatever and that I can't look at a picture at a slightly diminished quality. That needs to be fixed to, or if anyway knows a work around or hack for that please let me know too.

Ok.. so I found out something interesting and I am closing my own post with that. So, some genius over at Apple thought the following: "Let's make an app that is actually really cool, but let's make it a bit convoluted so that people will have problems using it".
So, In order to receive a call on your OS X laptop of desktop or iMac you would have to initially launch FaceTime and then sign in. Then ... Quite FaceTime! That's right! Quit FaceTime. You wouldn't want your camera to run all the time and your cpu being stressed by FaceTime and the camera constantly running. So, just quit FaceTime and wait.
Now when someone calls you, like magic it will ring. When you accept FaceTime launches, and you are on. If you are not there and the other person gives up you will see a little red circlie/star with a number of missed calls in the dock icon of FaceTime (if you have such icon in your dock that is).
If you want to make a call, easy.. just launch it and select who you want to call. Do your little chat and when done, you guessed it - just quit the app. Done deal.
I still consider that somewhat a design flaw and I wrote Apple about that. Why can't FaceTime be on (to make it easy for my mother in law so that when she logs in that Facetime automatically starts). Just so that it is there when she want's to call her grand kids, but the cam is off when no call is in progress. I think it would be a bit more intuitive only because all other video chat clients work THE SAME WAY! But no, it's different here. Oh well. Maybe someone will fix it down the road.
Thanks for listening to me rant.

I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5.  I've been using this for years.  I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message.  I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work.  I checked import menu and nothing has changed.  I loaded the photos onto my tablet and images are fine, so do not feel it is the memory card.  Any thoughts?

The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly.

  • Mac Pro with External Camera use FaceTime for Mac?

Any ideas what cameras will work with a Mac Pro that does not have Isight camera? Can I use a Camcorder or still camera that takes videos?

I use a LogiTech C910 1080 HD Video webcam on my MacPro 8 core and it works great. BestBuy sells them for $79.95 and on sale this week for $10.00 off.. great camera for the price. Also works with iMovie for short clips.
I just downloaded FaceTime for the Mac and installed it.. called myself using my iPhone 4 and works like a champ.
It has built in stereo microphone but I use a separate Plantronics USB headset for better sound and listening when talking with someone on Skype or any other video chat.
CAUTION..If you do test it using your iPhone (in the same room) watch out for the FEEDBACK through the speakers.. be ready to hit the MUTE button on your iPhone or you will get reverb loud and real fast. And it even mutes iTunes when a call comes in.. and when you hang up iTunes comes back up..pretty cool.
The Logitech C910 doesn't say it will work on a Mac (on the box, it only says Windows) but it does and works just fine. Plus there are other drivers on their web site for the Mac and other cameras.
    Hope this helps..

  • Problem with Facetime and my MacBookPro camera

    Hello,
I've got a MacBookPro and I have a problem with Facetime and my front camera.
When I have a discussion with an iMac or an other MacBook the image received by the other person becomes fix.
To unfix it I have to put my finger on my camera and then everything is good until the next time, 4 to 10 seconds later I've got the problem again.
    Perhaps somebody can help me.
My head on my screen is always good even when the bug appear on my correspondent's screen.
For information, the 2 mac have the same iOS version (OSX Lion) and Facetime version.

    Hi Dave,
Edit: Well, I guess I was lost when I posted this. My answer was regarding a problem with OS X, not iOS. I'm going to leave the answer here in case someone else with a Facetime for Mac issue can benefit, because when you're searching for "Facetime AND Login", you could land in any discussion area. -Jerry
Keychain Access.app is in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder.
The path will be: Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access.app.
Keychain is where all your passwords are stored for those applications that you don't want to have to manually log into all the time.
It's a handy app to become familiar with, for instance if you want to look up a password or user name from the past.
    Hope this helps you.

I recently purchased a shutter release remote for my IPAD camera but the cord is only three feet long and I need an extension cord.  I purchased a 3 banded AV extension but it doesn't work.  I have been told that I need an extension cord that has AV and Mic to enable the remote shutter release to work with the extension cord.  Can anyone tell me what the correct extension cable is and where I can find one?  Thanks.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Lightroom not reading correct data for Lens and Camera Serial Number

    Hi you all.
Recently got Lightroom, and I'm so impressed - I never imagined image organizing and adjustment could be this easy and at the same time very advanced.
I have a problem, however. Lightroom (and Adobe Bridge, too) does not correctly read the EXIF data of Lens type and Camera Serial Number.
The first ~50 images I took and imported turned out correctly and displayed my serial number and lens (18-55 mm Canon) inside Lightroom.
But now, whenever I import photos into Lightroom or view them with Bridge, they all display "Unknown Lens" and "Unknown Camera Serial Number".
At first I thought that maybe the camera didn't correctly record this data on to the photos anymore for some reason, but a comparison using EXIFToolGUI shows that the metadata is EXACTLY the same as in the photos that display this info in Lightroom correctly.
I have not done any changes to either my camera (Canon EOS-350D / Digitial Rebel XT) or lens (the kit lens, 18-55 mm Canon).
It seems that for some reason, Lightroom has stopped reading these two fields of metadata - all the other fields, such as aperture and shutter speed, all display correctly.
I also tried to reimport the photos into Lightroom, but it didn't help. Neither did "Synchronize Folder" -> "Scan for metadata updates".
What should I do? I'd like my lens information do display correctly, as I'll buy a new lens soon.
I have attached one of the photos that Lightroom doesn't read the data correctly from. Try importing it into your Lightroom, and see if how the info displays.
    Thanks in advance.

Are these jpgs or RAW?  I have only edited metadata on jpgs.
It looks like Vista's import stripped out all the makernotes.  I didn't look at your file but that seems to be what happened.  Be warned, Photoshop CS2 also strips out makernotes!
Now how to fix the problem.  If you want to edit the metadata on files already loaded into LR, you need to write out your metadata to the files first, then edit the metadata, then read the new metadata into LR.  This is scarey for me, so I always make sure my backup is up to date on the images first.
What to do...  You probably can't put back all of the makernotes, so what to do to get the lens information in.  I don't know if putting back in the makernote LensType would trigger LR to reconsider its lens information.  I don't know.  If it had a real lens name, my guess would be no because it would have an XMP::Lens field which would override.  But maybe unknown lens doesn't have this field and it would re-read the makernotes.
The other solution is to forget about makernotes for these images and put the exact text you want into XMP::Lens.  I think that's the "easy" way.
In either case, you will have to become familiar with exiftoolGUI or exiftool itself.  I use the command line exiftool but it looks like you can edit multiple files with exiftoolGUI.  Select your files, click the edit thingy (^) under XMP, choose various, and there is lens.  Put in the text you want.
I would do this with one file first.  If the lens shows up after you read the new metadata into LR, you know you have it right.
Note, exiftool can write backup files for each file.  This makes too much of a mess for me.  I prefer to copy the directory first (I have copies anyway, I just have to make sure the backups are up to date).
Good luck!  I'm struggling with a similar situation where the same lens used by two different cameras is coming out with a different name.  I need to go back and "fix" the names in the images already imported, and then develop my procedure for setting a single unique name before I load new images into LR.  Not too much of a problem because I'm loading in GPS information anyway...  What's another call to exiftool...

  • Synchronized capture for multiple USB cameras

I need to capture images from 8 USB cameras at the same time.  I don't need to continuously acquire images (just one set every few seconds), but I need the 8 cameras to capture at very close to the same exact time.  Just testing with two cameras at the moment, and one camera always seems to capture about 0.4 seconds after the other.  Attached is the current VI I'm testing with.
Any idea how to speed this up?  I thought having both grab.vi's in a separate frame would help make them occur at the same time, but it's still a lot slower than I hoped for.  Thanks for any suggestions.
    Attachments:
Grab USB frame manual.vi ‏46 KB

All depends from precision. 100 ms is not bad result. For better precision I would like to suggest to use cams with external triggers. The cameras with USB interface are also available, for example:

    http://www.edmundoptics.com/products/displayproduct.cfm?productid=3356

Otherwise they may be incompatible with IMAQdx (the only DirectShow compliant cameras are supported). Point Gray Chameleon seems to be DirectShow compatible.

  • HT5467 iPhone iOS 6. What is the difference between, respective purposes, and functions of having both location services for photos vs camera

What is the difference and respective functions of turning on or off location services for "photos" and "camera" ?  I guess I don't see what purpose of having the option for photos location services in addition to the camera option?

    Thanks,
    one hypo:
If I always had location services off for the camera, while taking all my photos, then there should be no metadata embedded at all in the first place, so then the photos selection becomes redundant?

I'm not sure what is going on but try this.
Open a program which allows you to edit text (on Windows I would suggest NotePad but I don't know what to use on MAC) You want a very simple text editor.
Type your username as you want it.
Highlight it and copy it to the clipboard. Go to the log on page and paste in the name from the clipboard.
    Maybe that will work.
All I can think of about the first character becoming an upper case character is that it reminds me of some word processing programs - such as Word or Works - which always assume the first word of a sentence will begin with a capital letter and they change it for you.
I don't know why this would be happening in your case, but that is what it reminds me of.
Is there a spelling add-on or plug-in that might be coming into play here?
I assume that you have no problems at work (you say this is happening on your home computer) so I would begin to look at differences between the two as to software installed, browser add-ons and plug-ins, etc.
Maybe someone at the computer department at the school can help you track this down.

  • I have an SD card that my husband uses for a trail camera. The camera does not have a delete function for the pics, so I put the SD card in our MAC and we can view the pics but when I go to delete them it says that the files cant be deleted. What can i do

My husband has an SD card he  uses for his trail camera. We put it in our mac book pro and can look at the pictures but when I go to move them to the trash it tells me that the files can't be moved to the trash because they cant be deleted. I have Nikon camera software on my mac and it pics up and asks if you want to import the pics and if you want them deleted from the devices afterwards. I tried that but I get a message afterwards that says that some files were not able to be deleted. When I go to check, none of them were deleted. How can I clean of the SD Card? I do have a camera I could stick it in, it would just be nice to know how to do it from my mac. Also, the files are jpg. if that matters.

AFAIK cameras offer their own built-in format utility for inserted SD cards.  You should use that.  Otherwise, refer to the manual that came with your camera to determine precisely how your SD cards need to be formatted to work properly.  Personally, I'd suggest Partition Scheme: MBR, and Filesystem: FAT32.
Try to limit the number of formats you perform on the SD cards, though, as you're reducing their lifespan.  I believe formatting causes re-writes to a portion of the SD card that has fewer read/write cycles than the rest of the card as a whole.

  • How to Install Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera

I need someone to walk me through how to install a Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera.
I haven't used photoshop in ages and I got a new camera. I have been on the phone with Adobe (no help) and spent a couple of hours online trying to figure this out. I'm confused, frustrated and about to throw my computer out the window.
Also, I placed this in the "Photoshop for Beginners" since Photoshop CS5 doesn't appear anymore. I know CS5 is outdated but I spent hundreds of dollars on this program and you would think adobe would still honor its product.
    Any guidance is much appreciated.
    AJ

Odds are cs5 is too old. If you do a search on my the main Adobe website there is a list of compatible cameras for the last known update to camera raw for cs5.
Each version of Photoshop only gets so many updates for camera raw then it is necessary to upgrade Photoshop to get the next update for camera raw.
So you currently have 4 choices.
    1 upgrade Photoshop
2 get Lightroom - latest version
3 get Photoshop elements -latest version
4 get dng converter - this will download the latest version an is the only option that is free.
The dng converter can be found by searching Adobe website.

  • Problem with facetime for mac

hello guy! I've got a problem with facetime for mac.My sister has a I-pod touch fourth generation with factime but i cna't phone her a message come on my mac.It say "xxx can't receive facetime's calls"!Can you help me??

    Thanks, Dah•veed.
I did see mention of using Google Public DNS while I was searching the forums prior to posting, but to be honest didn't think it was a DNS-related problem.
However, to rule it out I've set the prefered DNS servers on my router to Google's, but FaceTime still disconnects after 4-5 seconds when calling between me and my brother-in-law.  It doesn't matter who initiates the call.
As a test, before I made the changes to my router, I logged into FaceTime as him on my MBP and tried calling myself on my iMac, and that was successful.
The same test between the two iMacs when they were here was unsuccessful, so now I'm definitely thinking it's something on the '08 iMac.
Now I just need to figure out what...
