Facetime HD camera "not connected"

Today I opened the FaceTime app and was greeted with the message "There is no connected camera". I found this extremely unlikely, as (lol) I am using a MacBook Pro, and just yesterday the camera worked. If I go to the system profiler, the FaceTime HD camera is listed under USB devices.
Any suggestions?

  • Camera not connected in macbook air ios 10.6.8

Camera not connected appeared in my macbook air when I tried to access camera booth yesterday. This happened in late 2011. I took the macbook to an apple service centre and was told that it was a hardware problem. I delayed sending it for repair and in the meantime in february 2012 there was a camera update which I installed and that solved the problem. Lately I had installed several updates and now I am faced with the similar problem of "camera not connected" when I tried to access photobooth and all the other applications that require a camera. I  need help as my extended waranty is about to expire in a few days time. I have not much confidence in the macs as I find that the camera goes missing after updates? Please help! Thank you

You need to take it into an Apple store to be fixed. You should of done that back when it first happened. I suggest you do it before your Applecare warranty runs out.

Camera not connected??  I haven't seen that error message before.  If pulling the Battery doesn't help resolve the problem then I would contact Verizon or LG Support to see about getting the phone replaced...
This topic has been covered in a few other threads, so I would search those as well for help...  But for those who are new to Android, this might help.
The Battery not holding a charge?  There are several reasons this could be happening.
    * If the Ally is new, then I recommend that the first few times, you completely charge the ally, like overnight, and then fully discharge it before recharging and then repeat the cycle.  I noticed that on my Ally the Battery life actually got better than it was out of the box, to some extent.
    * App/Process management....  This can be a huge factor since the Ally is a multitasking platform and you can have unneeded processes running in the background chewing up battery life and processor cycles.  Check that the services like WiFi and GPS are only on when needed.  Check that apps like WeatherBug are configured properly so they don't continually update when not needed
    * Bad Signal area??  If your phone is struggling to get or maintain a Cell signal or Data signal that it will severely impact your battery life...  Check to see how Many Signal Bars you are getting and note if your phone seems to flip flop back and forth between '1x' and '3G' service...  this will help determine whether you are in a good location or not
    * Finally, it could be a Bad Battery/Phone...  Smart Phone battery life is not as good as a "Feature Phone" or Basic Phone but it still should be better than what you are seeing...  I would eliminate all of the other potential suspects before looking to replace the battery.
Sorry for going over some basic stuff, but maybe it will help others as well.

  • FaceTime & Photobooth states Camera not connected on Lion

I just upgraded to Lion on my macbook air. FaceTime and Photobooth both stated that my camera is not connected. How to fix this problem?

I had that exact same problem... along with many others. None of my applications were opening properly including mail.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
This fixed everything for me. Facetime worked right away, photobooth hung once, but when i force closed and restarted it is working beautifully again. (Scroll down to the blue links and select the one applicable for you, in this case it would be "Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own")
Let me know if it works!

  • MacBook Air - Camera not connected after update 10.8.5

After the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5, which I updated on my MacBook Air, and I didn't read the part about the camera saying it might not work for MacBook Air. So., carelessly, I updated and then when I wanted to Facetime it did not work.  Then I realised my camera wasn't working for all of my apps. Are the Apple Company going to fix this? Or do we have to do something ourselves? I need my camera back.

    (1) Do this: (If necessary, print this and bookmark the links before starting the process.)
    • If you do not already have one, make a backup of your important files now.
    • Use the  > Restart... menu command to restart your Mac.
    • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
    • Download and install OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo)
    • Repair permissions AGAIN immediately following the restart that completes the Combo Update.
    • Test your camera to be sure it is working.
    (2) If the problem continues, do this:
    • Restart your Mac using OS X Recovery (⌘-R)
    • Use "Mac OS X Utilities" there to repair your startup DISK (NOT permissions.)
    • Restart your Mac normally.
    • Test your camera to be sure it is working.
    (3) If the problem still exists, do this:
    • Restart your Mac using OS X Recovery (⌘-R)
    • Reinstall OS X. (You will need to be connected to broadband Internet.)
    • As soon as the Mac restarts after the reinstall,
use your Mac's Disk Utility (NOT OS X Recovery this time) to repair permissions.
    • Test your camera to be sure it is working.
    (4) If the camera still doesn't work, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

I have recently found out that my MacBook Pro 15.4 early 2011 model the FaceTime HD camera is not loading or is missing.

I have also performed reinstalling the combo pack for 10.9.2 still nothing. But going through my extension I did find that isight is listed and it status is not loaded.I also checked my usb and I don't see FaceTime HD camera listed. I do have automater on my Mac not sure if this would cause an issuse or not.I also tried other applications like photobooth, Facetime, Camera. Any other advice would be great.

    iSight is the built-in camera.

  • RMBP Late 2013 Facetime HD Camera Not Working

    Hi there,
I have my rMBP since the end of December. When I got it, i needed to update the OS X to 10.9.1. I don't recall if i tried the FaceTime HD Camera later or before the system update, but i'm sure it was working back then.
Now it doesn't work. At least it isn't stable. Some time it works, but very little times. When i turn up the PhotoBooth or any other software (Skype, Messages), the greenlight starts to blink repeatedly and that's about it. I can't see nothing besides black image.
I've been reading in questions simillar to mine it this forum and others, but it seems people with a problem similiar to mine only happened in OS X 10.8.4.
I read in a post ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/24030755#24030755 ) that updating the AppleCamera.plugin, located at /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/ would do the trick. I've tried that, but with no results.
I've also performed a hardware diagnostics test. Didn't have any warning or error. Seems the hardware (the webcam in this case), is running just
fine. If anyone is interesting to perform the same test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5781
Any suggestion or help would be very thankful.
    Regards,
    Shadas.

Apparently I was able to solve the problem. The only thing i do was to uninstall Skype. It seems to have solved. I'm not sure if this happen cause i had installed the Skype through brew cask and therefore I probably didn't have the most recent version of Skype.

  • Built-in Facetime HD camera not working

My MacBook Pro Retina's (mid 2012) build in camera just works sometimes. After doimg many SMC resets or killing VDCAssistan processes, I've realized that the problem boils down to the device name of the camera.
Here's the situation. When you open System Information and look at the USB section, you're normally supposed to see
    "Apple FaceTime HD Camera"
But when the camera is not working in Facetime, Photobooth or Skype the name I see in my USB device list is ViMicro USB Camera(358boot) and the device is identified as
    Vimicro USB Camera(358boot):
      Product ID:          0x3580
Vendor ID:          0x0ac8  (Z-Star Microelectronics Corporation)
      Version:           0.10
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          Vimicro
      Location ID:          0x1a110000 / 3
      Current Available (mA):          500
      Current Required (mA):          500
That is a clear indication that OS somehow uses a trick to identify this camera as Apple Facetime HD. I was first concerned that iy was a hardware issue, but then I'm convinced that all the applications look for a "Facetime HD Camera"
14.08.2013 11:24:42,642 VDCAssistant[408]: VDCAssistant:  Found a camera (0x1a1100000ac83580) , but was not able to start it up (0xe00002c0 -- (iokit/common) no such device)
14.08.2013 11:24:42,642 VDCAssistant[408]: VDCAssistant::DeviceArrived  Got error (0xe00002c0), waiting to see if the device shows up again
I'm pretty sure that this is a software issue and started after upgrading to 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 I'm looking forward for apple to fix this. All other remedies are just temporary and does not fix the issue

The problem arises from permission problems on the files/devices the VDCAssistant process tries to access. It's always a good idea to do a "Check Permissions" with Disk Utility on the startup disk after every version update.

I also tried PRAM resetting but it is still not working. Now in USB it is showing below informations under FaceTime HD Camera (Built in):

    Version: 5.16

  • HT201412 Can't get on FaceTime says wifi not connected but I can get mail, how?

Can't get FaceTime to work, my wifi says not connected but I can still get mail, how can this happen?

I was having the same problem. I've probably screwed things up royally by doing so, but I just went ahead and created another Apple ID with a different email address, and will inform anyone who I will be using FaceTime with to use the new one. I tried using the "multiple ID finder" thing but it only ever returned the ID I'm using right now; I can't verify the email address this ID is associated with for some reason.
    It's a clusterfark.

  • FaceTime HD camera not working at all?

Recently, I opened up photobooth and tried to use the built in camera on my 13 inch macbook air and while the green light on the camera was on, all that appeared on the screen of photobooth was the rotaingloading symbol. I got in april 2013, so it shouldnt be breaking down already. I don't use that camera very often, so I have no idea when it stopped working for sure, only that it happened after OS X Mavericks. I've tried force quitting everything else, restarting, logging in to a different user, and my computer doesnt have any of the symptoms that might require an SMC reboot. My warranty expired about a week before I became aware of the problem, and if possible, I'd love to have a solution that wouldn't cost me anything. Let me know if you need any more details. Thanks (:

I'm having the same problem on a Mid 2012 MacBook Air that had previously been working just fine. I used FaceTime all the time.
My symptoms are exactly the same as yours; green light, but no camera image.
I have a question for you.
If you select the Apple menu, then about this mac, then click more info, then click on system report.
When the system report appears, click on USB. There are going to be several USB hubs, keep opening them (Clicking the little triangle) until you find an entry that says
    FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)
    Click on that entry.
From there you'll see detailed infor about your camera. It should look similar to the list below.
    Product ID:          0x8510
      Vendor ID:          0x05ac  (Apple Inc.)
      Version:          80.25
      Serial Number:          û ž—ÞÄpõ]v™j
      Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
      Manufacturer:          Apple Inc.
      Location ID:          0x1a110000 / 3
      Current Available (mA):          500
      Current Required (mA):          500
What I'm curious about is the Serial Number:   You'll notice mine has no numbers, just characters. These characters change at almost every reboot of the computer.
A wokring camera has a string of numeric values.
I think this too is a symptom of the failure but I want to be sure that I'm not the only person seeing this.
    Thanks.
