Facetime HD camera - 'There is no connected camera' rMBP

Hi
I recently purchased a brand new 15" retina MBP.  I am running 10.8.4  I am dissapointed to find the built in Facetime HD camera is not connected on apps such as photobooth, skype or facetime, although sometimes it works directly after start up.  This is very intermittent, sometimes it works shortly after start up (with the green light working) and then 10mins later it is no longer detected.  I have looked on system report and there is no camera detected under the 'USB' section when it doesnt work, however when it is working, the Facetime HD camera shows up under USB.
I have tried numerous things such as resetting the SMC multiple times, reinstalling the OS, uninstalling apps, restarting the notebook etc etc and to no avail.
Does anyone have any solutions?
Thanks

Take the computer back to Apple. There is a one year warranty on it.

If restarting Mac does not resolve your trouble, try all the relevant suggestions (including testing more than one Apple camera application in more than one user account) from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight support article.
(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)
If your Mac's System Information utility still does not recognize your inbuilt camera as a USB device, you most likely have a hardware problem.  There are no user serviceable parts of the camera.  For hardware help, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.    Unless you have a current backup, make one now.   Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion: "... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."

  • Getting message that :There is no connected Camera. I have rebooted several times and still can't get it back.

When I go to use Photo Both, Facetime, I get "There is no connected Camera". I have a built in camera but don't know how to fix it. I have tried rebooting in three steps several times. First time it worked, but everytime I log back in, I get the message again and now the reboot does not bring the camera back. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong or should do to fix it?

  • "There is no connected camera" error

After updating to 10.9.2, I can no longer access the camera built in to my Cinema Display and connected to my 2009 Mac Pro. It fails to work in all applications I tried, such as Skype, FaceTime and Photo Booth. Typically, I get an error that says "There is no connected camera."  I can’t say for sure that the update caused the problem, but I became aware of it shortly after doing the update. The camera in my similarly-updated MacBook Pro works just fine.
Here’s all the relevant diagnostic info I can provide:
    • The camera is still listed as “Display iSight” in System Information
    • The problem affects all user accounts, not just my main account
    • Resetting the SMC had no effect. Restarting had no effect.
    • Trying to kill VDCAssistant, either via the Terminal killall command or via Activity Monitor had no effect. In fact, it appeared that neither command successfully killed the two VDCAssistant processes I had going.
    • Console is showing a steady stream of VDCAssistant crashes. A key part of the crash report states: “Client is attempting to access a display by index (1) instead of display ID. abort () called.”
    • ONE THING DID WORK: If I restarted via a Safe Boot, the camera worked! This confirmed my suspicion that the camera itself (or its connection) is not broken. A software fix should be sufficient. I’m just not sure what to fix.
When I did a normal restart after the safe boot, the camera failure returned.
    • I used Cocktail to clear the System Cache. It too had no effect.
If anyone can figure this out, I would be most grateful.

Hmmmm.... The camera is working properly on my 24" LED Display connected to my 2009 Mac Pro!
    Did you try both:
    (1) a restart Mac, repair permissions, 10.9.2 Combo Update, and another permissions repair and,
    (2) OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X via the built-in recovery disk?

  • Facetime HD camera "not connected"

Today I opened the FaceTime app and was greeted with the message "There is no connected camera". I found this extremely unlikely, as (lol) I am using a MacBook Pro, and just yesterday the camera worked. If I go to the system profiler, the FaceTime HD camera is listed under USB devices.
    Any suggestions?

issue with camera it says "there is no connected camera" in may macbook pro

I got that error from PhotoBooth, no connected camera.
After messing around with all the usual suggestions (reset PRAM, repair permissions, etc.), I tried plugging in an external USB camera (happened to be a ProScope) and - for no apparent reason - the internal iSight camera sprang to life and has been working fine ever since.
Worth a try - any USB camera should do it.

  • My Photo Booth is not working. There is no connected camera. Help, anyone?

I have been having this problem for weeks now and I hope some people here will be able to help me.
I just bought my MacBook Pro 13" about 6 months ago and I rarely use it because I still have my old MacBook with me. Recently, my Photo Booth won't work. It says, "There is no connected camera." Can anyone help me? Is there something to do with iSight? Tell me what should I do?
Help is much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi nana450,
If you are having unusual rotation issues in FaceTime with your camera image, you may want to try a restart/reset of your iPad, as outlined in the following article:

Default Apps like Facetime and Camera cannot be deleted.  check other home screens and folders.
Also check Settings->General->Restrictions->Facetime and Camerai and make sure they are not turned off.

  • Fix for "There is no connected camera".

Hey there, I've got a little (very frustrating) problem with my laptop's webcam. I have a MacBook Air 13" Mid-2012, and very often when I go to open up my webcam I get "There is no connected camera". I am aware of the TEMPORARY "sudo killall VDCAssistant" fix, however, I was wondering if there was a more permanent solution without having to take it in. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Tried resetting SMC?

  • FaceTime HD Camera (Display) not working with most applications

The Thunderbolt 27" LED Cinema displays built in camera is not working with most applications. The camera does not work with FaceTime, iChat, Skype and Google Talk. FaceTime says "There is no connected camera", even though there is. Weird thing is it DOES work at http://www.testmycam.com. I can't get it to work with any other flash based apps, just testmycam.com.
My MacBook Pro 17" (late 2011) built in camera works perfectly with everything.
    Things I've already tried:
    - Shutdown
    - Restart
    - disconnect/reconnect
    - removing power from display
lame, lame, lame. $1k monitor, flippin' webcam doesn't work.

I think I have found the problem. I decided to go page by page through the forums and found this argument when running a Java program through the console:
    -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
    So it would be like:
    java -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true SwingSet2
That works flawlessly, so it has to do with direct draw (So it's either DirectX or my video card drivers which are up to date).

  • Facetime hd camera doesn't work for osx lion 10.7.5

My facetime hd camera is not connected to any of my apps. The apps will open (facetime, photobooth, skype) but there is no connection. I can't even go into preferences to select a camera. Please help!

    • Restart Mac and try again.
    • If problem continues, use http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090.

    • If you have the same problem with every Apple app you test in every user account you
check,  the "reset" suggested in the Troubleshooting article may restore normal
       camera function.
    • If nothing else helps, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • FaceTime Hd Camera broken

I've had my MacBook Pro computer for a little over 18 months now, and it seems that the FaceTime Hd Camera has been turned off or is not working (it is built in to the computer). It doesn't work in FaceTime, iMovie, or Photo Booth, and when I open Photo Booth it says "No camera connected". The green light next to the camera also does not turn on when opening any of those applications. Is there any way to turn on the camera or is it permenantly broken? Thanks!
