FaceTime, Mavericks and webcam...

Hi,
I just upgrade my Mac Mini to Mevericks and I want to use FacteTime for Mac.
There are no webcams for sale in the Apple Store.
You advise me to buy what webcam ?
Thank you.

    HELP!!!
I recently updated to Mavericks, and was delighted to see how much was actually not functioning...
Almost nothing from Apple opens. The apps just jump once and then force close before even opening a window.
I cannot access any of my messages or Emails with the app, but i am able to send messages through the sidebar thing.
My Email does open, but it shows that nothing is selected even when I do select such item.
Please help! I love my mac, but right now it might as well be Glados the Potato

I guess I am not alone. Till date I have not been able to resolve this issue, I went back to Microsoft Outlook in the interest of sanity and be connected in business.
I am a school Principal and I cannot afford to be disconnected with my school parents, children and others trying to contact me, tell them Apple Mavericks upgrade disabled me. I already have a few parents taunting me saying "we told you not to switch, you would not listen."
Outlook mails keep on downloading over and over again every time I access Outlook and so far I have multiple copies of each mail. I tried Command + R to reinstall OSX that tells me to contact Apple Care. My frustration aside, I have gone back to my Windows PC.
Hence, no light at the end of the tunnel yet. No MacMail, No Facetime, No Appstore, Safari Crash....on and on....
Apple - please wake up and take ownership!!

  • Updated to mavericks and FaceTime won't work

I updated my macbook pro to Mavericks and noticed my facetime gets failure messages when it tries to sign in. I tried googling how to fix it and can't find anything that seemed to help.  I am not tech savvy. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

I have a similar issue on my MAC.  I can sign in but it won't let anyone else sign in after I sign out.

  • Is there a way to disable the Facetime camera and use an external USB webcam for browser based webchat?

Is it possible to disable the Facetime camera and use an external webcam as a default? So that when you access browser based applications that require a webcam it doesnt default to the Facetime camera but uses the USB webcam instead?
    Cheers.

    (1) You don't need to "disable" anything to select among cameras connected to your Mac.
For all cameras you access via browser based applications (cameras connect via Flash browser plugins), control-click on an open video window in your browser page and adjust the camera settings to select between a connected USB and Firewire video camera.  Specific instructions are here:
       http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help04.html
If you don't see a choices of cameras in the Flash settings, your Mac is only recognizing one camera.  Verify that your external cam is Mac-compatible and properly connected.
Your choice is stored in preferences so the same camera will activate on the next browser page until you change it.
    (2) BTW, a current (Feb 2013) discussion of how to select among connected Mac cameras for a few more apps is available here:  http://discussions.apple.com/message/21158673#21158673

upgrading from snow leapord to mavericks, i couldn't opened app store, messenger, ibook,FaceTime, maps and other. please help

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode - About
If that doesn't work, do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then reinstall the OS.

Didn't work w/previous mac software either. Works fine on iPhone & iPad. Any suggestions or just stick w/Skype!? Thanks.

  • Recently upgraded to Mavericks and iMovie '13, and suddenly I'm beach balling like mad?

I upgraded to Mavericks and iMovie '13 recently, and have been working on a video project in iMovie for the last few days. I hadn't been having any issues, but now I'm 'beach-balling' almost constantly, not just in iMovie, but everywhere. Opening a new app (iMovie/Chrome/Safari) will cause beachballs, and sometimes iMovie will fail to launch entirely, appearing as 'Not Responding' in Force Quit. Even using the Finder bar has caused beachballs. I've removed extraneous apps, cleared hard drive space, performed Disk Repair, and am not seeing much improvement. My EtreCheck output is as follows:

I have had no software issues with my MacBook prior to this (although I did have water damage that was repaired by Apple). If the problem is an issue with Mavericks/iMovie, I wouldn't be opposed to downgrading back to iMovie '11 or Mountain Lion if that's possible, as long as I can maintain my work on this project. I'm really looking for a 'quick and dirty' fix, as I'm already behind on this video project and need to finish as soon as possible. Thanks!

    Hello mattkole
Try reinstalling OS X Mavericks to see if that resolves the random restarts on your MacBook Pro.

  • Are the Facetime Video and Audio encrypted between users?

Are the Facetime Video and Audio encrypted between users?

I don't know the answer but I hope someone who does will respond. I know Skype is encrypted and I know Google talk is not. I am a psychotherapist, and I use webcam to conduct therapy occasonally, and naturally, I need an encrypted audio/video to help maintain client confidentiality. I would love to use FaceTime. Despite some on this forum, I use it with Lion and I have less problems with FaceTime than I do Skype. But I can't use it for my clients until I know for sure that it is encrypted. Anyone out there with a knowledgable answer for both Cephsaiii and me?

  • FaceTime 3 and FaceTime 1 mac ?

I just saw accidently that there r2 versions of Facetime out there, and would like to know if somebody can explain me in simple newbie-english,
Whats the diference between Facetime 3.0 and FaceTime 1.0.2 on a Macbook Air.
BTW I do have Facetime 3.0 already installed but like to know if the 1.02 is an update to 2013
....or is it just a money-melk software or Apple.
    Thnx

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
They are just FaceTime versions for different OS X versions without any new feature. For example, FaceTime 3.0 works in OS X Mavericks, and FaceTime 1.0.2 is a paid version for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which is for older computers

  • Facetime, iMessage, and Mail not working after iOS 6.1.3 update

I've had my iPod touch 4th generation since Oct 2010 and never updated the iOS until very recently. Before the update, Facetime worked consistently and easily. After I finally got around to updating my iOS a week ago, my iPod has come into severe issues.
99% of the time, I cannot send or receive Facetime calls. If I try to make a call, it doesn't make the dial tone and eventually it just says "Connection Lost". Nothing happens if someone is trying to send me a call. I only Facetime with my boyfriend and his iPod hasn't changed since Facetime was last working. HIs other iPod is also updated with iOS 6.1.3.
I never used iMessage before the iOS update, but because it says on Apple support that it uses push notifications like Facetime does, so I tried it. Most of the time, I cannot send or receive messages. I rarely used Mail before the update, but I never had a problem with it. Now, when I enter my gmail password, it keeps saying my username and password are not correct, even though I haven't changed my credentials.
I only use my iPod for Facetime, iTunes, and Pandora. I don't need iMessage or Mail, but I am testing with those to see if this can help find the root cause of the problem. Pandora works smoothly so I know it's not a wifi connection issue. I have searched for remedies on end and tried:
    1.  Reset, turn off/restart, turn Facetime on and off, etc.
    2. Changing the DNS server address to 8.8.8.8, which made Facetime work normally for one time and never again
    3. Updating my Apple ID password online, then signing out and signing back in
    4. Creating another Apple ID with my other gmail account. Maybe 1 out of 10 Facetime call attempts, I can generate the dial tone, but when my boyfriend clicks to receive the call, it says that I am unavailable. iMessage has about the same success rate. It seems when I miraculously can send or receive texts through iMessage, I can manage to get the dial tone when I try Facetime, though the call cannot go through.
This is of course extremely frustrating and I highly regret the update now. I was hoping for an improved iPod after the update, and now I have a near-dud! I did make sure to check my location and date and time, and both are correct (US, Central time). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I spoke too soon. I tried Facetime again last night and had the same problems. Another factory reset did not work. I think it may be time to just call Apple support.

In Snow Leopard the Spotlight access is exactly the same. The only search field is in the Safari toolbar, and this has been amalgamated with the address field - as I said above, just type the search terms in the address field:

Hello, Im new to this website. Im having issues with my Macbook. I have the old 2009 model Macbook and it is our schools macbook. The school just upgraded these MacBooks to OSX Mavericks and when i try to open Minecraft it won't let me. It says no jdk installed. I also try to install Java SE runtime but half way through the Software Update it says cant download software because of network problem but I'm connected to the internet and i can browse stuff just fine. Can any one help with my problems. P.S. I don't know the administrator password or stuff like that. And yes we are allowed to play games and stuff on these laptops but only at home not at school so don't tell me i need to focus on school and not games.

Since you updated the operating system, it is probably Minecraft is missing certain files that ware remove or are not longer comparable with the new version of the OSX. what I recommend, is to check is there is an update for Minecraft and install that. If there is not update available, probably the best thing will be reinstalling Minecraft. Hope this will help you.

  • Can't open Pages '09 Document (Upgraded to Mavericks and Pages 5.0))

There is one Pages '09 file that I can not open now that I have upgraded to Mavericks and the new Pages.  Of course it is an assignment that my son needs for school!  When I double-click on it I get the message that the document could not be read, that it does not have a valid format.  I tried opening it with the 4.3 version of Pages, but get the same result.  I also tried to pull the document from the time machine, and same problem.
Any suggestions/work-arounds?  I tried simply renaming the file format--no luck.  Do I need to repair permissions?
    I am on a 3-week old iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB 1600 MHz DDr3, 1GB old school drive.

Maybe try what was suggested here:
