Whenever I call my wife, my Dad, my work colleagues it just says failed immediately. I haven't touched anything since last week and neither has anyone else. Time and date prefs are all ok and the "help" on the apple site is next to uselss. Its driving me bats. Anyone with any ideas?

Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
Then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

  • My FaceTime just keeps saying failed

how do i fix it? i doesnt ring, everytime i click on someone it just says failed

Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

  • I have lost facetime on my macbook pro.  Calls ring but message says fail

I have lost facetime on my macbook pro.  I place the call, it rings then says 'failed'.  Has been working very well until now.  Any ideas anyone?  Thanks.

    Hello lindseynicola,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you're having issues with making calls using FaceTime on your Mac.  I'd like you to take a look at the following troubleshooting information, in order to get this issue resolved:
    Troubleshooting FaceTime for Mac
You can make FaceTime calls using the FaceTime app. You can call FaceTime users whose contact information is in Contacts. You can add contacts and edit contact information in either FaceTime or Contacts. To place a video call, you may use a phone number or email address.
If you encounter issues making or receiving FaceTime calls, try the following:
Verify that FaceTime is enabled in FaceTime > Preferences. If the issue persists, or if you see the message "Waiting for Activation", try toggling FaceTime off and then on.
Verify that the Date, Time, and Time Zone are set correctly:From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences > Date & Time > Date & Time.
    Enable "Set Automatically".
Click the Time Zone tab and confirm the closest city is correct.
Verify that both parties are connected to an active broadband Internet connection.
See Mac OS X: Troubleshooting a cable modem, DSL, or LAN Internet connection.
Consult Using FaceTime behind a firewall for necessary ports to open in firewalls, security software and routers.
If you encounter issues using a Wi-Fi network, use standard Wi-Fi network troubleshooting to resolve interference and other issues.
Verify the phone number or email address being used is the correct one activated for FaceTime. You can verify that you are using a valid Apple ID at appleid.apple.com. You can also create an Apple ID or reset your password from this website.
Verify that both parties have installed the latest software updates for their Mac and/or device. See:

  • I want to use facetime but my iMac says I have to use a different email addys!

I want to use facetime on multiple machines but my iMac says I have to use a different email addys!  Needing multiple email addresses for using Facetime on multiple Apple devices seems really ridiculous to me.  What is the way around that?

you won't get that feature until apple releases the new IOS 6 http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/#facetime for normal users.
Are your friends developers who are trying out the beta IOS 6?

  • Facetime stopped working on mac. says "failed".  works fine on phone and new mini.  Any ideas.  already went thru all the troubleshooting. added a unique email address to the mac.  just keeps failing. ????

facetime stopped working on mad.  says "failed".  works fine on phone and new mini.  tried all the troubleshooting, added a unique email to the mac facetime, nothing seems to work.  just keeps saying "facetime failed".  any ideas???

I Got the same problem. When you change the output to internal speakers again facetime works again in the mac.
I think it may be some kind of incompatibility with the current driver. I used in the past the old tascam Us-122 and worked well but its driver don't work more for the mountain lion system so i bought this newest one.
When i used the old one I could use the volume keys on the mac keyboard to control output volume; now with the us-322 when hearing music you can control volume just from the tascam.

  • TS1702 Hi my Daughter and I got new iPad 4th generation for Christmas, we are unable to connect to FaceTime, it keeps saying we r not available. Can you please help me to figure this out ?

Hi can someone please help ? My Daughter and I got new iPads for Christmas. 4th generation. We r unable to use FaceTime it is saying we are unavailable for FaceTime and it hangs up. Could someone please explain how to resolve this mater....thank you !

That would be the wireless number assigned by AT&T when the purchaser of the iPhone signed up as a customer with AT&T. If neither you nor your uncle ever activated the iPhone with AT&T, click the "non customer" button.
Note that jailbreaking often renders it impossible to get an iPhone officially unlocked, so don't be surprised if it fails. If it does, then you may have to buy a new iPhone, this time one that is officially unlocked.
    Regards.

  • During the start up of my imac, logon failed

during the start up of my imac, logon failed and the user doesn't exit anymore . i have performed a password recovery and i'm using the mac root user. is it possible to recover my user and my profile ? and how ?
this problem exist from the moment in which i had change my id apple .
    thanks

Ifd you go to /Users does your home folder still exists? If so, then go into Accouns and make a new user account with your same name, and this is very important, same short name. When you do, you will get a message that a home folder already existsd and would you like to use it, say yes and then log out and your account should be there. If there is no home folder your only option is to restore from a backup.

  • 7.1 update to IPad now unable to use FaceTime and iMessage says could not sign in check your network connection.  Why am I seeing this when I am connected?

7.1 update to IPad now unable to use FaceTime and iMessage says could not sign in check your network connection.  Why am I seeing this when I am connected?

Check Settings>General>Date & Time>Set Automatically>On. Make sure that the time zone setting is also set correctly.
If that didn't solve the problem, restart your iPad and try again. If that fails, reset your iPad and try again.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I am getting an error that says "failed attempts to get anything from cdr server" on a website. It just started and now it won't launch the information. How do I correct this?

This is occurring on the website Virgin Mobile. I was asked to perform some upgrades on my computer and now I am unable to get the content of my call history to display on a screen within this website. The 2nd window will display quickly and then shrink down before showing the call history content.
The error message then pops up saying "failed two attempts to get anything from cdr server"

Are you using the original gray-faced OS X DVDs that came with the system (if so, what OS X level does it say on the disk) or a retail copy of OS X 10.6 or another gray-faced OS X disk from another system? You can't use a gray-faced OS X disk from, for example, an iMac or MacBook Pro, to install on your MacBook.
Was it originally delivered with an OS X level that is greater than what you're trying to install? You can't install an earlier level than what came with the system.
Did you boot to the DVD, and use Disk Utility to create one disk partition, then reboot and try to install?

  • I used the "erase free space " option in disk utility and now my imac says the disk is full and wont let me download songs. please help!

i used the "erase free space " option in disk utility and now my imac says the disk is full and wont let me download songs. please help!

You could try repairing permissions with disk utility, I don't think you will have the option to repair the drive but you could verify it.
This may help you delete the files that DU made but did not remove when erasing the free space.
    http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/317204-no-disk-space-after -failed-disk-utility-erase-free-space.html
When you get your SL disk it will not have the iLife applications, that would have been on the second install disk that should have been with the computer. I forget which version of iLife you will need for SL but I think it is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-iLife-Single-User-Mac/dp/B003XKRZES/ref=sr_1_1?ie= UTF8&qid=1409607702&sr=8-1&keywords=apple+ilife+11
A search of the forums will confirm or deny this.
As to whether a clean install will cure your problem, i.e. partition the HDD and install I would expect it to be yes, but there are no guarantees it is an old machine.

  • Cannot dial anyone using FaceTime on iMac

Apple should have tested FaceTime on Mac more thoroughly before launching it.  After all it is not a free but paid App.  First of all, Apple forgot there were lots of people who register a long time ago and their Apple ID is not an email address but (say in my case) numbers (mine is my mobile number).  Secondly, in the early days when I created my Apple ID account, the password requirement is loose - today passwords must contain 8 (6 in the past) digits and a capital letter etc.  Hence, after I purchased FaceTime on iMac and tried to enter my Apple ID and password, I could not log in.  There was also no error message telling me what the problem was.  Eventually I had to call the Apple hotline and learnt that I had to create a new Apple ID and password in order to use the FaceTime on iMac.
No, that didn't solve the problem.  After I successfully launched by FaceTime on iMac (verifying via my email etc), I finally managed to launch the FaceTime on my iMac.  I then tried to call/FaceTime a few people who had FaceTime on their iPhones but everytime, the error message is: Mr So and So "is not available for FaceTime".  And when I use an iPhone to call my iMac FaceTime, I hear the ringing tone on the iPhone but nothing happens to the iMac - in other words, there is no prompt at iMac for me to "answer" a call.
I never knew Apple products are so complicated and user unfriendly.  Can I get a refund for the FaceTime?
    Al

Check that you do not have any firewall that is blocking the connection.  Also from personal experience I have noticed that FaceTime does not work if you are both using the same network but I am not sure if this is the case here?

  • Imac g3 failing-

Hey everyone… hope you can advise. My 6-y-o daughter’s imac has been running very slowly and died briefly yesterday – I was able to fix it by hooking it up to my MacBook in Target mode and running disk utility. The SMART status now says ‘failing’. There isn’t anything really important on there that needs to be backed up – she really just uses it for the internet. I have to replace the damaged slot-drive anyway so I guess this is as good a time as any to replace the HD too. With that in mind, these are my questions:
    • How long is it likely to last before crashing completely?
    • What kind of HD would I need to get for it? I recently replaced my ibook HD so would it be the same size HD I should get? Or are HDs for desktop computers physically bigger?
BTW, it’s 700mhz processor with 256 mb ram and slot-loading drive and runs Tiger…
Thanks so much for any help!

Since the S.M.A.R.T status says "failing," I would assume that it won't last much longer.
I found a nice 80 GB Hitachi Desktar HD for an iMac that I have for $50. The HD size will not be the same as in your iBook; you are correct that desktop computers have larger HD's than laptops. Laptops use a 2.5" drive, while desktops use a 3.5" drive.
While your doing all the upgrades, why not add some more RAM? 256 MB is enough to support Tiger, but 512 MB or more will make things run much faster. However, if your daughter only plans to use the computer for internet, or you only plan for her to use it for the internet, then the RAM upgrade really isn't that important.
    I hope that all helps.

I would say to start by looking on their web site... unfortunately, that appears to be dead.
Based on the horrible ratings on the App Store (1 star for the current version), I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.
