Facetime on mac mini

can i use facetime on mac mini with Apple Thunderbolt Display ?
thanks

Just to relate my experience with the Macally Megacam:
When I purchased my Mac Mini late last year, I wanted a microphone mainly for telephony (specifically, Google Voice). I chose the Macally Megacam because besides having a microphone which would "just work" and a nice low price, it also had a video camera.
The microphone in the Megacam works perfectly and flawlessly with every application for which I've needed a microphone. I like the way it clamps onto the top of my monitor and connects via USB with no software of its own to get in the way.
The camera works. But in FaceTime it is terrible. TERRIBLE. Very, very low framerates. I think this is because the camera is always recording its images at its maximum resolution and this results in the Mini not being able to keep up a decent framerate. The folks with whom I've used FaceTime have told me that the framerates I'm pushing to them are the same; it's not just that it looks bad in the preview miniwindow in the corner of the main FaceTime window on my Mini. I've tried it with my own iPhone and I've seen the same thing, so it's not a bad wifi connection, either, as the image from my iPhone to the Mini is perfectly clear with a high framerate.
Admittedly, I've only tried the Megacam's camera with FaceTime. Maybe some other application would drive it better.
I'm still satisfied with the Megacam. As a microphone. If I frequently used FaceTime or some other application requiring video, I would not find it satisfactory and would look for some other camera or possibly just get an Apple Thunderbolt display which has a FaceTime camera built in and would connect to the Mini with a Thunderbolt cable.

I can't start PhotoBooth without it crashing when I have a Logitech C170 plugged in.  If I remove the webcam the application starts fine.  Same web cam doesn't work with FaceTime either.  I have purchased two of these webcams and both operate fine on my macbook air, but on my Mac Mini, they simply will not work, and I cannot figure out why.

  • Iphone as webcam for FaceTime on mac-mini

i have an iphone and a mac mini. I use facetime on the iphone and have also used my iphone as a webcam for my mini for skype and other applications but failed with facetime. I know that i could use facetime directly from the iphone but when i am at home i prefer to use the larger monitor conected to my mac-mini instead of holding the iphone in  my hands. i dont want to buy another webcam. I expect that apple should at least make their own devices compatible in all these possible ways.
Does anyone know an app or way i can use my iphone camera as a cam for facetime!!

Before you spend more money (and time) on 3rd-party apps - which could cause you trouble with the next OS X update as much as they interfere with the system - you may want to consider putting your $$$ into an external, Mac-compatible webcam from a well-supported brand (drivers!) and have peace.
BTW, if you don't want to run FaceTime off your iPhone because you don't want to hold it, how would you use it's camera only without holding it? If you have a solution for it, it would also apply for FaceTime via iPhone, obviously...

  • External usb microphone not working with FaceTime and mac mini with os x Yosemite

    Hello
When I try to do a phone call with face time through my iphone 6 face time is not recognizing my external usb microphone connected to my mac mini. I have just updated my mac mini to os x Yosemite. If I go to the audio system preferences and look to the audio input signal I can see that the external microphone (SB Omni Surround 5.1) is working (audio input level is showing an input signal).
Can someone help. I saw that this was also an issue in the beta versions of Yosemite.
    Thanks.
    BR Stefan

Interesting.  I don't have a USB mic on the Mac Pro.  Its the OLD FireWire 300 iSight.  It works for FaceTime calls but not the iPhone call via the FaceTime app.
I also have 2010 MBP that works perfectly, even since the first Public Beta.  I'm to sure if that mic is considered an external USB device or not, or if it has to do with device signatures vs. external or internal.  I would almost assume that the built-in mic is on the USB bus.  How would it be any different than the external USB.
I think I have to agree that this is a point release bug.  I have submitted a bug report at bugreport.apple.com, and would ask others to do the same, or at least post to apple.com/feedback.  The more noise we make through process the more likely to get a fix in the .1 release.

  • How do I delete missed call badge on FaceTime in Mac mini OS10.X?

I missed a FaceTime call on my iPad. I deleted it there. It still shows up on my Dock. I have tried the Quit-->Show Recents Routine and eventually, the badge disappeared from the icon on the dock but still showed on the Applications screen.
How do I remove this badge permanently?

You really don't have to go through the trash folder (unlesss you want to check it) - going to the File menu > Mailbox and choose to erase deleted items in all accounts (or use the key command shown).

  • Can I use an IP camera for FaceTime on my Mac mini?

I have a Mac mini running Mountain Lion and I would like to know if it is possible to use the streaming video from a wireless IP camera as the video source for FaceTime (and other video apps). If so, how?
    Thanks!

    HI,
My mistake.  I saw the Mac Mini spec and presumed you were looking for any camera and had come across Wireless IP ones.
I know of one BlueTooth one (just to keep a spin on it ).
I have heard good things about this one - but mainly from 2 years or so ago when it was new.
Actually Wireless IP ones I know next to nothing about.
One of the main issues with iChat 2 through 4 is that the Video that iChat accepts is limited to DV from the External Firewire cameras that were about  or certain USB Cameras that produce output that works with the Utility from Ecamm or the Apple Framework item that was introduced later in OS X 10.4 for the USB 2.0/UVC compliant cameras.
By Snow Leopard and iChat 5 most computers do have USB 2.0 ports and all but two of the Mac range have Internal Cameras that are in fact USB 2.0.UVC Compliant.
On the other side as it were, are Camcorders also move to USB 2.0 over Firewire.
However in many cases the output is not DV and none are UVC compliant.
The video signals from these cannot be "translated by either the iUSBCam Ecamm utility or the internal Driver from Apple.
So the main issue will be the format of the Video output from the camera for iChat or Messages.
Other apps, particularly Quicktime, are going to have less of a problem as Quicktime can handle many more formats.

  • I have a mac mini with a web cam/microphone and would like to be able to facetime with my families iPhones 4S/5 using wi-fi email address.  I can't call the iPhones from the Mac Mini with Mountain Lion OS.  What is wrong?

I am trying to include a Mac Mini with a webcam/microphone to call several family iPhones 4S/5 usisng email addresses vice phone numbers so that we can communicate from outside the US via iPhone to the US (Mac Mini) via wi-fi and email addresses.  We are using the same email address for the Mac Mini as for Itunes and made new email addresses for each of the iPhones.  I cannot receive calls from the iPhones but can call the iPhones from the Mac Mini.  what needs to be corrected?
    Thanks.

lllaass speaks the truth. Macs have always been "plug & play" with everything except cameras. That's the one area where you MUST have compatible hardware or you're simply S.O.L.

  • What cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

what cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
However, it it work fine on my late 2009 Mini with Mavericks

  • External iSight mic not working with facetime.  Snow Leopard, mac mini w/ firewire v1.0.2, 800/400 firewire adapter

External iSight camera connected via Firewire adapter 800/400 to a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard - a visual signal comes up for iChat and FaceTime, only sometimes does a video signal comes up for PhotoBooth, always no sound for any of the applications.  System Preferences "Sound" shows "Input Level" set around 75%, however only periodically do I see blue bar move, almost like a short in the cable, but the adapter is new.  Firewire firmware is v1.0.2.  Tried to use firewire updater to get 1.0.3, but updater won't update for Snow Leopard.  For being advertized as the world's most advanced OS, seems like Apple OS could at least work with Apple External iSight camera !  Any help much appreciated on fixing the missing sound.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.

  • Phone number not showing up in imessage and FaceTime on ipad or mac mini

I have the ipad, Iphone, and a mac mini. I am confused as to why my phone number is not showing up in imessage and facetime  on my mac mini and ipad. I had it set up but for some reason it is not working now, it just shows my apple sign in email address. How can I fix this?

    Hi, sarahr1987.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is a troubleshooting resources I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.
Phone number missing on iPad or iPod touch
If your phone number isn't listed on an iPod touch or iPad, follow these steps:
Update to the latest version of iOS.
Verify that you're using the same Apple ID that you're using on your iPhone.
On your iPad or iPod touch, sign out of your Apple ID in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID with FaceTime and iMessage.
If your phone number still isn't listed, follow these steps:
Sign out of your Apple ID on all iOS devices, including your iPhone, in the following locations:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your iPhone.
When activation is complete, your Apple ID and all verified email addresses should be visible in Settings > Messages > Receive At and Settings > FaceTime.
Sign in to your Apple ID on your other iOS devices.

  • FaceTime with logitec video camera causes the mac mini t. Face if

Each time I try to run FaceTime on my mac mini with a logitec USB video camera ( mac version) it causes a lock up and requires a full reboot.

It sounds like it is mistaking the camera for a DVD disk. So my best follow-up question is to ask:
    1. Who is the manufaturer of your camera
    2. What is the model number of this camera.
What happens when you quit DVD player. Does iMovie still fail?

  • If i have multiple iPhones and Mac Mini sharing the same Apple ID, can I use Facetime between the devices?

if i have multiple iPhones and Mac Mini sharing the same Apple ID, can I use Facetime between the devices?

Yes, but if you want these devices to have complete capability of calling each other they each must have their own separate, individual e mail address.  If they don't have individual e mail addresses, the i phones will be able to call each other because you'll be using their  individual phone numbers -- the Mac mini will be able to call the i phones, but, the iphones will not be able to call the Mac mini.  This is because the iphones will be using the mini's e- mail address to make the call, and if they have the same e mail address, they will think they are calling themselves, so the call will not connect.
So, the way I see it is,  if you keep all of the email addresses the same, the only thing you'll loose is the ability of the iphones to call the mini.
EDIT:  Thinking about it, my first sentence needs to be modified.  Your iphones can share an email address but it must be different from the Mac mini address.
This isn't rocket science, but it can make your head spin. LOL

  • Best webcam to use for Facetime on a Mac Mini?

Long story short, my mother's PC bought it last night and after many years of trying to convince her, I'm going to order a Mac Mini for her to use.  She wants to use Facetime with it, however, as her friends have iPads and whatnot.   I have always relied on my built-in iSight cameras from my iMacs, so I have no idea what a good 3rd party camera is.  Without suggesting I track down a used iSight on eBay or whatnot, what are the best webcams currently available on the market that use Lion (most recent update) and are available to use with Facetime?
I have been told that Logitech has one (c910), but I can't seem to find verification that it supports Facetime on Lion, as most of the reviews I have found are from 2010 and early 2011.
    Thanks.
