FaceTime Problem w/Built-In iSight

After working flawlessly for months, all of a sudden FaceTime won't recognize my built-in iSight camera. The camera works fine with Skype, PhotoBooth, iChat, ISPQ, iMovie, and every other application that can use it. But, when I try to open FaceTime, I get the following message:
"FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue."
I have restarted dozens of times, tried deleting  FaceTime preferences and restarting, and even tried deleting the FaceTime app entirely and reinstalling from the App Store. Same error message each time.

Hi,
It is strange that it is one app.
In the Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) do you list IMAgent running ?
If you do not already have one, create a new Mac User Account for testing (System Preferences > Accounts)
Set up Face Time with the same info you use in your regualr account.
Does it see the camera ?  (As you deleted the .plist in your account the chances are it is system/USer Account wide)
Have you tried a SMC/PMU reset ?

  • Problem with built-in iSight

    Hello,
I am having trouble with my Macbook Pro's built in iSight. I appreciate any help anyone could give me.
As of a couple of days ago, iChat and Photobooth are now unable to access the iSight camera. iChat states, "There is no camera attached to this computer." Photobooth gives the error "There is no connected camera."
The weird thing is, Skype and any flash based software are still able to use the camera perfectly.
System profiler lists the camera correctly as "Built-in iSight" under USB. It doesn't list any problems. Nothing else is attached to the computer.
I have tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, repairing disk permissions (twice), and reinstalling 10.6.4 with the combo updater.
Can anyone think of anything else to try?
I would think it was a hardware problem, except that several programs are able to use the camera. It just seems to be Apple software (iChat, photobooth, Quicktime X) that are unable to see that there is a camera built in.
Thanks anyone for your time and help.

    Welcome to Discussions, -Matt.
You seem to have tried all relevant suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
When only a couple of apps give trouble, their preference files might be corrupted. If you are using the OS X version of Skype successfully, my suggestion is that you reset the preferences for the apps that are giving trouble. If you need help:
Here is how to reset Photo Booth preferences:
     • Quit Photo Booth if it is running.
     • Delete the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist file from your ~ (Home) /Library/Preferences folder.
     • Restart Photo Booth and test. A new .plist file will be created when you launch.
Resetting iChat is similar except iChat's camera preferences are kept in the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist file in the same directory.
Be sure to quit iChat before you reset preferences. When you start iChat again after tossing your iChat.plist file, you will need to reset any preferences that you want to be different from the default values.

  • Having Problems with built in iSight

    Hi,
I am having problems with the computer finding my built in iSight camera, I just updated to Mountain Lion and now no applications recognise it.
I have tried turning it off and on again, and switching to different users, but none can identify a connected camera.
    Help?
    Specs Here
    Thanks

    Hi englishguru,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You may find the steps in this article helpful for troubleshooting the camera on your MacBook:
    How to Troubleshoot iSight
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2090
Since you've determined that the behavior isn't user specific, try these steps:
    3. Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
    4. Reset SMC or PMU
Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions for MacBook and MacBook Pro.)
If your built-in iSight camera is still not behaving correctly after trying all these steps, you may need to contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
    Regards,
    Jeremy

  • Problems with built-in iSight and iChat! Nothing works!!

    Hello,
i have a problem with my iChat, iChat said that no camera is connected, but the built-in iSight works with Photobooth!
I read many Threads here but no solution works,
there is also an entry in the system profiler USB --> built-in iSight
I closed all other Aplications like Photobooth, iMovie and so on,
than i checked the activity monitor.
I changed the settings in iChat (bandwith) and Quicktime (bandwith)
    I did a PRAM reset...nothing changed!
    I did a SMC reset...also nothing changed!
The built-in iSight doesnt works with Skype, too!
    Please help me!

Hey, I hope people aren't getting annoyed by my compulsive posting, but I think this solution needs to be spread, it doesn't get enough publicity:
the issue is that with 10.5.1, a certain quicktime component that acts as a USB controller for the iSight camera is given an expiry time (i.e., the file is given a feature similar to "trial periods"). This file is then deleted, and iSight ceases to function. All that need be done is to replace the component, by downloading it here:
    http://techslaves.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=q8frk8vf81l0f8echu6mj0plk0&action=tpmo d;dl=item16
(disregard the version marking, it works for 10.5.2 in the very least)
Copy it to ~/System/Library/Quicktime, then reboot and it should work.

  • Videochat iChat problems with Built-In iSight...

I'm using a MacBook Pro and I'm trying to do a video chat over iChat connected to AIM.
I've used it several times before with two other Windows users, but this third person I'm attempting to connect with, won't go through.
It says, that their Username won't accept the Videochat invite when they clearly have.
They're reinstalled their version of AIM and even tried to upload newer AND older version but nothing seems to be working.
Can someone with previous experience with this problem help me out?
    Thank you in advance, everyone.

  • Problems with built-in iSight

I opened up photo booth today and noticed that the video camera isn't working properly. Instead, the screen is totally green. The video camera light on the top of the computer is green, indicating that the camera is on, but the screen is just a blank green background. If I wave my finger infront of the camera there is no change at all on the screen. This computer is brand new, and the camera was working fine a few days ago. Please help me fix my problem!! Thanks.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I just figured out that problems I was having with iSight were because of a widget I had downloaded ... it's basically a 'mirror' widget ... it would play in the background ... and was disabling the iSight camera (message like 'you can't use PhotoBooth because you have another application open etc) ... doesn't sound like this is your problem but just for reference in case anybody else is having problems and has that widget you have to lose the widget to be able to use iSight.

  • Problems with built-in isight: colours and fuzziness

I have just bought a new MacBook, however I seem to have quite a problem with my iSight. When I use it (for example, through Photo Booth) I get an image that is very reddish (it seems like the only colours I get are in the range black-orange-red, and no, I'm not using any special effects like Sepia :)) and that is very fuzzy, or even better, foggy.
Any fix for this? I have had an iMac with an iSight that only showed black and the solution seemed to be to reset the PMU. However, I cannot find information on how to reset the PMU on my new MacBook.

  • Macbook 10.5.8 Version Built in ISight problem with YM 3.0 beta version

I am using my Macbook built in ISight with the latest version of Yahoo Messenger for Mac, the 3.0 Beta. Every time i will use the YM webcam, it will only last for about 1 minute and will not work anymore. This is happening since i bought my macbook last November 2008. it will be a year next month and still the ISight is not working properly with YM. When i checked from the store where I bought my macbook, they said it happens in YM coz according to them YM is not yet fully applicable with apple laptop models and recommended to use other messenger instead. My family and friends are using YM only to keep in touch with me so I don't have a choice but continue using YM. Its really disappointing coz I even downloaded the other version of YM before this 3.0 version, but same problem still exists.
Can anyone help me on how can i fix this problem? or if there is really a solution on this..I've always wanted to have a macbook laptop but having this kind of problem really made me think if i did a right decision to buy this laptop. it is indeed an expensive laptop but i cant enjoy it fully...
    please help me!!!

    Welcome to Discussions, Marianne Bayogos
Problems like yours, especially those involving known-unreliable (Beta) software, can be difficult to resolve. You need to start by troubleshooting to determine the source of the problem. Then you will KNOW what to fix. You seem like a fairly experienced user, so try any of the following you think might help in any order you like.
    (0) You can use the suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to determine whether iSight is causing your problem. Be sure to try with more than one user account and with some other apps, too.
If your iSight works properly with all other apps in every user account you test, your Apple hardware and software is NOT the cause.
If you can eliminate iSight as the source of your trouble, you will need to either switch to other ways of communicating or troubleshoot other system elements that might be causing the problem. Here are some other things you can consider if you don't get better suggestions here.
    (1) Sometimes a restart restores function on internet connected applications. Shut down everything and restart your entire system including modem, router, and Mac in that order. To eliminate possible communication hardware problems, allow self-test to complete on each device before starting the next.
    (2) If you updated or installed any other software immediately before the problem began, check their websites to see if there are known issues with your system configuration or installation. If these are no know issues, carefully following the developers' instructions, reinstall any recent software additions that you think might be causing a conflict with YMM, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, and try again. Doing this reinstall will reduce the possibility that some recent addition might be conflicting with your new YMM Beta.
If you find conflicting software, follow the instructions and uninstall to see if removing it will restore proper function to your favored communications apps.
    (3) Check YMM's Help: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/mac/mac3/index.html
for help with installation and communication requirements/ configuration topics.
If you do not find the answers there, check the dedicated YMM forum (use the "Ask Other Messenger Users" link on the help page) to see if your problem has already been solved by other users who post there.
    (4) You can also take your MacBook to a different location and see if the connection works when you access the web via a different internet connection.
    (5) I no longer use YM because I often encountered problems like those you describe, but my testing from several years back showed that Yahoo! seemed to support the Windows version of their messenger app better than the Mac version.
Because your iNtel Mac can use Boot Camp, VMware Fusion™, Parallels™, or VirtualBox to run Windows® software, there is another alternative available to you. Choose which method you want to use to run Windows®, add the required software to your iNtel Mac (if you have not already done so), and then install and use Yahoo! Messenger for Windows.
      http://messenger.yahoo.com/platform/win
    (6) If all else fails, and if your family and friends are willing to try something "new and improved" (does NOT work with Yahoo! Messenger), you can both install and try a different video chat app such as Google Talk or Skype.
    (7) Alternatively, you can try the web-based video chat sites like http://www.mebeam.com/ or Defcom's recommended TokBok.

Any idea? It has been 3 days only that I bought the Macbook.
    Thanks,

My macbook had the same problem. It began after I installed bootcamp, which I have since updated to 1.1. Whenever I boot into windows xp and then back into Os X, the isight stops working. In photobooth I get a blank green screen with a few scribbling lines of static at the top, but in ichat I get the "in use by other application" error.
I tried a system X reinstall, a bootcamp reinstall, zapping the PRAM, etc. etc. What really killed me was that the isight camera continued to work FINE in windows, but not at all in Os X (I could almost hear Bill Gates snickering).
The solution turned out to be resetting the power management unit by unplugging, removing the battery and holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Works without having to zap PRAM after.
The annoying thing is that I have to do this EVERY TIME after I have booted into windows if I want the camera to work in Os X.
As other users have pointed out, bootcamp now includes a package that updates the isight firmware.
Interestingly, this does NOT happen on my intel iMac, only the macbook.
I'm hoping for a more elegant fix.
    Anyone else?
    Jason

  • Built-in iSight problems-"camera in use by another application" but its NOT

I am having an issue with my iMac G5 2.1GHz with iSight built in.
I tried to iChat AV tonight after months of not using it. When I opened my own video window it says "Your camera is in use by another application."
There are no other applications open in the dock other than Finder.
Same results with Photobooth. The message reads -- Photo Booth cannot open because the camera is in use by another applicaton. Close the application using the camera, then try opening Photo Booth again. < OK >
I searched this forum and tried the following:
    • zap PRAM
    • reset SMU
    • reset NVRAM
I looked for iSight prefs, but couldn't find anything. Deleting prefs is the only thing I have not tried, but I do not know what to delete.
Also, the camera shows up under USB under system profiler. The IR remote also shows up on the same bus, and the remote works just fine.
The green light next to the iSight is never on.
I switched to another user and experience the same problems, so it does not seem to be user settings.
Any help to get my computer to recognize my iSight would be appreciated!

Thanks for the note. I saw that Apple KB article #93216 that basically tells you not to have any other applications running that use the camera, which I do not. Also, I have Classic installed, but it is not running as I hardly ever use it.
Since my original post last night I have tried several more things, with absolutely zero success.
One unique thing that I thought would work (and it sort of did) was to add Photobooth to my Startup Items under the Accounts tab of System Preferences. Unlike iChat AV, Photobooth will not even open if the built-in iSight is not available. So, I thought, let's see if Photobooth will open at Startup and perhaps take over the camera before whatever is taking it over has a chance to do that.
Sure enough, this trick worked, although the video screen was blank. On a second time the video screen showed erratic thick lines like it was starting to pass the video data through and then was stopped. Again, my iSight is recognized by Apple System Profiler, so the computer knows it is there and is getting power, etc. As soon as I quit Photobooth and tried to reopen it, I received the message again that the camera was in use by another application.
My next steps, when I am able, are to try to boot off an external firewire hard drive that should have an older saved backup of my system, from when the camera was working. I will also download the combo updater as you suggest, MGW, and apply that as I understand that to be a sort of remedy for any number of problems.
To me it appears to be a software issue. I would imagine with the OS and not related to any application in particular. (iPhoto cannot access the iSight, can it? For some reason my iPhoto opens automatically on my G5 iMac every time I boot it up, and I cannot figure out why. I will look into this issue and see if it is related.)

  • Major built in iSight problem!

So I opened photobooth today and the image was terribly wrong. The image was in shades of purples, greens and grays, and was very grainy. It wasn't a slight change of what the normal picture looks like, but so bad that it looks like it could be an effect (and it is not.)
Nothing like this has ever happened before. I have no idea what it could be.
I am using a macbook pro, MAC OS X version 10.4.11.
2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB or ram.
    any help will be appreciated

Sorry you are still having problems, annefeldman10
So I tried all the different options ...
So you mean that you tried the all except the last one?
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
If you used the last suggestion, too, and have had your Mac checked by an AASP, what did he tell you to do?
    My camera is recognized ...
Do you mean that your built-in iSight is recognized as a USB device in your MacBook Pro's (MBP's) System Profiler?
If your built-in iSight does not show up as a USB device in your MBP's System Profiler after you have tried all relevant suggestion (except the AASP one) from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 , you have a hardware problem that will require the services of an AASP.
... only showing a green screen.
Verify that the "Colors:" choices bar setting in your  > System Preferences > Displays window shows Millions. If it is shows something else, correct it.
I am not sure what the reset is ...

With your MBP, you must follow these instructions:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
... (it only had instructions for powerbooks) ...
If "it" means something in " http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 ", your statement cannot be true. No PowerBook has a built-in iSight.
If you mean that you only have instructions for a PowerBook, you can download the users Guide appropriate for your MacBook Pro at:
      http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macbookpro
... I did the restart and it didn't help at all.
Restarting your MBP is a good idea that often gets things working again. It was wise of you to try that first.
I also suggest that you disconnect all peripherals while you troubleshoot your iSight and keep all applications closed except the one you are testing. Close the first app you test with your iSight before you launch the second one to be tested.
If you meant "reset" instead of "restart," and if you use reset procedures for a "powerbook" instead of a MBP, it is not surprising that those PowerBook procedures do not correct a MBP problem.
If you need to post back for more help, please be as specific as you can. We will try to offer detailed suggestions to your specific questions.

  • Built-In iSight problem after migration on parallels

I'm having a very strange problem. Recently I upgraded my MacBook Pro and migrated everything across from my old machine. Mostly without issue.
Something is driving me crazy though. Now in Parallels when I try to connect my iSight XP tells me that it has discovered new hardware. So I go through the whole install new hardware rigmarole. It then tells me that 'It Cannot Install This Hardware' saying that wizard cannot find the necessary software. I do have the bootcamp drivers installed though.
Also I'm noticing that when I'm trying to connect USB devices in parallels instead of it saying Apple Built-In iSight it's now saying Apple Built-In iSight #2.
I've tried everything. Searched through these discussions, parallels forums and even tried editing the .inf file to get the driver to work.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Discussions, RichardBradbury
I do not use Windoze, Boot Camp, or Parallels, so I have ever worked the specific trouble you post. However, I do have ideas that you can consider.
If you get no better here, try all relevant suggestions from the iSight Troubleshooting article:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your only problem in any user account is with Parallels, there is nothing wrong with your Apple hardware or software. In that case, I suggest you seek suggestions from Parallel's wide variety of customer Support options:
      http://www.parallels.com/support/
If you cannot find what you need from their FAQs, knowledge-base, dedicated Parallels Forum, or other Free Support Resource, you can request specialized help from Parallels Technical Support personnel via the contact choices available in the Support web pages.

  • MacBookPro Built in Isight problems

I have problems with my built in isight all the time. I get the message that another program is using it if i open photobooth. If i open Ichat i get the telephone icon instead of a webcam icon, which prevents me from using the webcam, and if i use yahoo messenger the webcam icon is inactive(it turns a different shade and is not actually "clickable". sometimes if i turn of the computer, pull the battery out and hold the power button for 5 seconds and then replace the battery and turn the computer on it will start to work agian, other times the problem remains. i have now not been able to use my webcam for about 4 days. i can assure you that i only try and use one program with the webcam at a time, and i have Mac OS vers 10.4.11 and the update thing says my software is u to date. any help?

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • Built in isight camera problem

I use isight with skype and until today with no problems. The image is out of focus and I assume that the problem arose since the latest software update. I tried ichat with the same result. I would appreciate any suggestions to resolve the problem.

    You're welcome, dp0941
Note: In all cases below, I am discussing your iSight's focus of your image. If your problem is that the image from your video contacts is soft, you have a different problem.
If you have tried all the suggestions offered above, I can think of two remaining possibilities.
    (1) First possibility: Your iSight's focus of your image looks good to you in Skype's and iChat's video previews before you connect with anyone, but it looks soft when you connect with a contact.
If this is the case, you both should Check your Broadband Speed. At least one of you may need more available bandwidth.
Also, if you are running more than one application when using video, you should quit all applications and launch ONLY your video chat application. Then start video and see if your results are better.
After you have found and corrected your problem, you can try launching another app after you have established your video connection to see if video degrades. If necessary, you can adjust your chat technique based on what you find.
    (2) Another possibility: Your iSight video is soft even in video preview windows.
You can test to try to determine whether your Mac may have a problem.
First, make sure you have plenty of light. Best quality video requires more light than normal room lighting.
When you are ready to test, quit all applications. iSight can only be operated by software applications, but high-quality video is processor intensive. Therefore, to remove as many variables as possible, you should launch only the application you are using for the test.
Make a high-contrast focus target as suggested in the focus test section of How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional.
The actual testing method described in this link is for External iSights. External iSight has an auto-focus mechanism, while built-in iSight is a fixed-focus camera. Therefore, you will need to test differently. Here are the steps I suggest:(a) Mount or position the test target so that it holds very still in the field of view of your iSight at a distance of about one foot.
Carefully inspect the image in your video preview window and note how soft the focus appears.
(I would make video snapshots of the images at each test distance for comparison purposes, but you may be able to find your answers without the snapshots.)
    (b) Move the test target out to about one-and-a-half feet from your iSight and repeat the careful image inspection.
    (c) Repeat the process at two, two-and-a-half, and three feet.
    (d) Repeat all the above with both iChat and Skype to see whether the problem is application dependent.
    (e) If you have not already tested to determine whether the problem is user dependent, repeat the tests in a different user account. You should be able to find the optimum focus distance for your iSight with this test. To send the best picture to your video contacts, position yourself at approximately the optimum distance while you video chatting.
If all test results are similar and/or all are too soft, your Mac likely has a problem. In that case, unless you get better suggestions here, I think you should contact your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check.

  • Built-in iSight recognition problem

Our brand new (three days) iMac G5 (iSight) is having trouble recognizing its own built-in iSight camera.
When Photo Booth is activated a warning message appears that says the program cannot be started because there is no iSight camera or it is currently being used by another program. iChat also does not recognize that a camera is built-in because when you click on the AV pane in the preferences window it says that there is no camera attached.
Mac support suggested (and we completed) the following: 1. SMU reset, and 2. NVRAM reset (commmands "reset-nvram" and "reset-all"). This fix didn't work.
Is anybody having a similar problem, or have a solution?

Hi, i have the same problem..
but i was told to reset the SMU, then the PRAM..
tried the new solution above, reseting SMU, then NVRAM, but nothing happen when i press option, O & F together..
anyone can teach me how to resolve this?
By the way, the profiler>USB>USB high-speed bus only shows that i have Hub>IR receiver... am i supposed to see a 'camera' listed there as well?
please help, its getting very frustrating.. thanks!
    regards
    Dennis
