Facetime quit working on iMac

I have a 2009 iMac, OS X 10.8.5.  I just upgraded my Linksys wireless router and am wondering if it has anything to do with that.  Linksys says no, Charter Cable says no.  FaceTime wasn't working on my iPhone 4S either but it has since started working. I cannot update to Mavericks because I have Windows installed on my computer and it won't work if I upgrade because I'm not willing to update (buy) Paralllels.  I rarely use Windows (hate it).  So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why I can no longer contact anyone on FaceTime and they can't get me either.  I click on FaceTime, it opens, I click on the person I want to contact, it starts ringing and then says it failed.  When they call me it rings I answer and it fails.  I can't figure out why.  Please help!  I have to see my grandson!

Hi,
The Firewall Preferences sound like you are on Mavericks and not Mountain Lion as I am sure that is when the Option button appeared.
Anyway, yes the app and IMAgent should be in the list (restarting with FaceTime or Messages already added to the list should cause IMAgent to be added by the system itself).
An older Linksys I used to have can be seen here.
The Remote Management  is on the same page as the main UPnP setting and lists port 8080 to be used IF it were turned On.
Remote Management allows someone outside your Network to administer your Router.  (you really don't want this).
In some cases, when an ISP controls the router, they provide services like updating the router from their end.
However it does leave it open for anyone to abuse.
It does appear that some apps will work over the internet even if they are not Listed in the Firewall List when it is On in Mavericks compared to older versions.
I fired up MSN (I have as I have Office) and it signed in after Little Snitch asked me to allow it.  It does not appear in my list in the Firewall.
By default an router will normally only allow ports below 1024 to be used "Out-of-the-Box".
There are various ways to allow ports higher then this.
On Linksys they is Applications and Games which has Port Forwarding  (A table which can have ports added for one IP (Computer) ) and then Port Triggering which does allow multiple computers and devices to use the ports but is also table based in it's set up.
UPnP is an On/Off setting that on some routers can be modified as to the length of time the ports is open when not is use and how many devices away (Hops) it can be "heard" to allow UPnP.

my imessage and facetime quit working and Ive tried everything on the website to fix it can someone help me?

  • IMessage and FaceTime stops working in iMac after carrier change

    Hi all,
I have done a fair bit of googling and had a look at the discussion history here but couldn't find a solution to my problem. Apology if it has been raised and discussed before and I woud appreciate being re-directed to the thread.
I have got iMessage and Face Time running smoothly on my iPad 2 wi-fi, iphone 4S and iMac OX 10.8.4. However, on the day of my changing carrier (17/09/2013), iMessage and FaceTime stopped working on my iMac as well as iPad 2. It can longer recieve or send messages or receive or make Face Time calls. All the settings looked the same - tick mark next to both my Apple ID email and mobile number, and conversation has always been set to start from mobile number on all devices. iMessage and FaceTime continue to work on iphone 4S without any issues. New sim card but same mobile number. I don't worry too much about the iPad. I just want to make it work again on my iMac and appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Steps I have attempted to make iMessage work again (I left Face Time turned off on iphone and iMac during this time)
    0) I disabled/removed Bonjour (GTalk) in iMessage setting in iMac
    1) I have turned off iMessage and FaceTime on all devices and swtiched iMessage only back on in iphone 4S first and then iMac. I got the message on my iphone that the iMac will start using the mobile number and Apple ID to send iMessages. However, iMac still fails to send or receive messages.
    2) I have updated Apple ID on the web (removed the phone number, saved, and then re-entered phone number assoicated with Apple ID). Then repeat #1
    3) I have tried changing "start new conversation from Apple ID email" across all devices - did not resolve anything
    4) I have added a friend's Apple ID in iMessage on my iMac -mobile number automatically appeared and tick marks for both her mobile and Apple ID email but unable to send or recieve messages still while it continues to work from her iphone
    5) I have also done a PRAM reset - I got the 2 chimes - did not resolve the issue
There's a clear trigger for this problem - change of carrier but I don't understand why it is affecting the iMac (and ipad) but not the iphone itself. Does anyone have any ideas what I can do about it?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Hi,
At the OS X 10.8.2 update things regarding the iMessages Account's login were changed.
It now requires that the Mac's Serial Number is held in the Memory for it on the Logic Board.
It can get missed in Refurbishments and Repairs.
This is used to generate the Auth-Token for your Apple ID in the Keychain.
Go to Application/Utilities and open Keychain Access.
In the Login Keychain look for "IDS: (Your Apple ID)-AuthToken"
Double clicking this will open the Info Panel.
Check the Access tab and make sure it is either allowing Any App or lists Messages, IMCore and those in this pic.
Although it is know that the Mac has to list the Serial Number it is not clear if other info is needed.
It is possible that it also refers to your Public IP address in some way, this would seem unlikely as most people's ISP issued IP address is from a DHCP server - you basically keep the same IP as you are "Always On" between the router and the ISP but it can change.
If it is not allowing access then change the settings.
There are also two .plists that contain the word imessages
One of these refers to the server you connect to.
com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist contains the Info you have in the Preferences of Messages (Apple ID, Linked iPhone Numbers and any additional emails)
com.apple.imessage.bag.plist contains which server at iMessages you connect to.
I would try deleting (drag to Trash) the second of these and then restarting Messages.
If that does not work Quit Messages and delete the AuthToken for your Apple ID (if the AuthToken appeared to be allowing access above.)
    Restart Messages.

  • 27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware

I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.
Here is the System Profiler Graphics/Displays output:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x944a
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383
    Displays:
    iMac:
    Resolution: 2560 x 1440
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Built-In: Yes
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?

Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.

  • IMac Trackpad quits working; comes back with bluetooth preferences in focus

    OS X 10.9.2, 2010 iMac 27", 2.93 GHz, 16 GB Ram.
I've used a wireless trackpad for a couple of years.  Recently, it randomly quits working, even with fresh batteries.  It ALWAYS comes back immediately when I bring up Bluetooth preferences to focus.  (no changes, just bring it to surface)  It then works for a while or days randomly, quits again and comes back when I bring back preferences.

Does anyone have any comment or ideas as to why this is happening?  I should have written this as a question I guess.

  • I cannot get FaceTime to work between my new iPad and my iMac any ideas?

I cannot get FaceTime to work between my 3rd Generation IPad and iMac, any ideas?

Not exactly sure about the iMac cause I don't have one. But the email being used on the iPad is at
Settings > FaceTime > You can be Reached for Video Calls at
Below that line there is an Apple ID which is the primary email address being used by the iPad. You can make changes there to change the email address.

  • I have a old imac OSX.4.11.  Lately my .mac mail account quit working and rejecting my password, even a reset password

I have an old imac with the swivel flat screen-OSX4.11.  My .mac mail account has quit working--it rejects my password--even a reset password.  Connection Dr. says to "make sure username and password are correct", over and over.  Help!

    Hello,
Did you change it over to iCloud yet? It does work in 10.4.11
The Password rejection can confuse people since it's a catch all meaning...
This Password, Username, Authentication method... is not recognized on this Port to this Server, or a server end problem.
If using a browser to login via WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but one of the other ones.
    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac/.me mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 587
        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • External speakers (Bose) quit working suddenly. The speakers work with an iPod but no longer on the iMac

These speakers have worked forever! Now they suddenly quit working. Plugged them into my iPod and they work fine. Headphones likewise don't work on the iMac. Seems to be a problem with the port and not the speaker system. Internal speakers work ok, but are far inferior to the Bose system. Are there some diagonstics I can run on this particular port? Shouldn't be a software problem (I'm running Lion10.7.5)

This solved my problem: in HARDWARE - Sound Preferences, I selected OUTPUT. I highlighted Headphone Port, (It was not originally highlighted), and then performed a complete shutdown (not restart). Re-booted, launched iTunes and the Bose speakers were working, as were the headphones.
This may not work for everyone, but it worked for me. Good Luck!

    Greetings:
3 days ago my mac MAIL quit working. I get an (repeated popup) error message indicating that my password is invalid. Is thjere a solution to this issue?

You should continue to dry it in rice for a week and change the rice daily.
All you can do is dry the iPod. Turning on the iPod before it is dry can can cause permanent damage.

  • HP Deskjet F4140 Suddenly Quit Working

Hello, I have an HP Deskjet F4140 connected to my iMac that suddenly quit working. The iMac doesn't even detect a a printer connected. I have updated my BIOs, uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers, etc. It worked fine last week. The only update I have made since then was an automatic update of the EEI Firmware. Any help?

The Apple updates messed with my HP C4280. I had to uninstall-delete then hunt down all HP files (preferences etc) using Spotlight and delete. Then restart and download and install the drivers again. After all of this it worked properly. Good luck.
