FaceTime: version of OS X is too new to install

Want to download Facetime but get the error "FaceTime can't be installed on [my computer] because the version of OS X is too new". I have 10.8.2
What can I do?

I have been getting this message for awhile and finally decided to find out why. When I researched the version in the app store I found it is version 1.0.2 updated March 2011. The version I am using with mountain lion 10.8.2 is version 2.0 . So I think that the version we have from mountain lion is  newer and we don't need or want to update it even tough the appstore thinks we should. So I am sure glad I didn't go through the trouble of reinstalling mountain Lion or worse using some terminal command which would have removed the version I have which works fine.

  • FaceTime can't be installed on "Macintosh HD" because the version of OS X is too new

I'm trying to buy the FaceTime app from the App Store but a pop-up window gives me the message, "FaceTime can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because the version of OS X is too new." What gives? Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I forgot to mention that I accidentally deleted the app at one point. It's no longer in my applications folder. That's why I need to download FaceTime from the App Store.

  • XCode can't be installed because the version of OS X is "too new"

I have Mountain Lion installed on both my iMac and my MacBook, and I'm trying to install XCode from the App Store. It installed on the MacBook without an issue, but when I try to install it on the iMac, I get an error that says "XCode can't be installed because the version of OS X is too new". Is there anything I can do about this? I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.0.
    Thanks in advance

  • Server can't be installed on "Server HD" because the version of OS X is too new

I'm attempting to install OS X Server 2.2.4 (Released 9/24/2014) on my Mac Mini Server (Late 2012). I'm receiving this message: We could not complete your update Server can’t be installed on “Server HD” because the version of OS X is too new
    Current software OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

I'd like to resolve the conflict and install the update.

    Hi All,
I am in the same situation.
I updated to Maverick 10.9.5, rebooted the system, in App Store updates I get OS X Server to be updated to 2.2.4, but I can't because the os x version is too new.
If I search OS X Server in App Store I can see the latest version 3.1.2 not as update, I should by the new software 13.99£, why?
Is there a workaround about this?
This question gets asked pretty regularly, and does seem to be a longstanding bit of confusion with the OS X Server product packaging.
OS X Server is not a "permanent" purchase that'll upgrade and work across all new "major" OS X versions "forever".
If there's a new "cat" or a new "bit of California" (e.g. Mavericks, Yosemite) being advertised with OS X, expect there to be a new Server.app purchase to go with that upgrade.
The organization and underpinning of OS X move around occasionally (usually with these new "major" releases), which means Server.app also gets reworked.
In other words, roll in your backups and revert to the older OS X version and the older Server.app, or purchase the newer version of Server.app.  (Having started out when OS X Server was a US$1000 purchase, paying the current prices for a newer version of Server.app is rather easier to get past the purchasing department.)

  • Server can't be installed on "Machintosh" because the version of OS X is too new.

After installing yosesmite, i get the above message when trying to update to server 3.2.2. Server app is not working at the moment. Anyone else gets the same? Solution?

The Server apps are written for the specific OS.
There is a version in the App Store for Yosemite.

  • IPod won't fully install because I have a version of iTunes that is too new

What can I DO? I am absolutely at my wit's end, and I desperately need to be able to install and configure everything properly because I use it for work (not for entertainment...but for actual work).
Here's the thing...I was given an 40GB iPod (v.3.1)...I already had iTunes on my comp (since I buy music all the time)...Well, when I ran the software to install the iPod, it wouldn't fully install because an error message pops up that says a later version of iTunes is already on the comp. Well, logic says unistall iTunes, right? It doesn't even appear in my Control Panel to be able to remove it...so my work IT guys tried uninstalling iTunes from the root directory blah, blah, blah...still a dud.
What can I do?!?! I already tried all the downloading updates, as well as downloading the Windows Install Cleanup...am at a serious loss here. HELP!!!!
Thankful in advance (it IS Thanksgiving after all...),
    Bugalu

Yes, thank you...I had those downloaded already.
Well..but get this...after wracking (sp???) my head all the live long day, I finally went back to the Hewlett-Packard support page, and it turns out I found--after all day searching--that there's a link to an Apple page that's an iTunes download for HP iPod users. How freaky is that???!!! Soooooooo...I uninstalled everything AGAIN--I swear I've rebooted my laptop more in one day than in the 3 years I've owned it--and reinstalled with that particular iTunes download....and after several same-ole, same-ole "severe" error messages that I simply X'd out of...voila! My iPod is up and running the way the good Lord intended.
Whewwwwwwww. I hope it doesn't get freaky on me again...
Thank you for your suggestions though, I LOVE this board!

  • FaceTime cannot be installed because the version of Mac OS X is too new.

The Mac App Store program is telling me I can install FaceTime. I already have it installed, but the version in the App Store is dated last April, whereas my installed version is dated 2013, so it seems like the app store version should be an update.
However, when I try to install it, I get a message saying "FaceTime cannot be installed because the version of OS X is too new".
Is this just the Mac App Store program being stupid?
My installed version says version 3.0, but the app store version is 1.05.  This is a huge difference that needs explanation. Especially since it does not tell me that I have a newer version of the program already installed.

The App Store version of FaceTime is only for OS X 10.6. All later versions of OS X have it built in.

  • FaceTime can't be installed... OS X is too new

I've paid for FaceTime on the Mac AppStore, but I get "We could not complete your purchase".
FaceTime can't be installed on "MainHD" because the version of OS X is too new".
    I'm on Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
What version of OS X do I need, exactly?

Hi, thanks but it's certainly not installed on my installation of Mountain Lion.
eg typing "Facetime" into spotlight yields nothing and I've never seen it.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard, if that makes a difference.
It's possible I tried to install it on Snow Leopard as a paid item.
And now it's so utterly confused, I'm unable to use it.

  • Xcode version 4.2.1 required - Cannot Install, OS X 10.8 Too New

There is a reason why I need an Xcode version eariler than 4.3..
I need to install some programs supplied by my university that make use of GIMP toolkit libraries (http://www.gtk.org) for the UI.
GTK has certain prerequisites though, one of which being: I need Xcode installed.
This would be all very well, but GTK contains a Python program called jhbuild which looks for the Xcode GCC Compiler in: /usr/bin and the SDK in /Developer.
Now, am I correct in thinking that the /Developer folder no longer exists for currect versions of Xcode? (version 4.3 +)
That would mean that I'd have to install an eariler version.
After downloading Xcode 4.2.1, I tried installing it to be given an error: 'Xcode can't be installed because the version of OS X is too new.'
So, I don't suppose anyone would know of a solution to this?
    Cheers, Jonathon

Read the following, and see if the following steps eliminate the need for an earlier Xcode.
Make sure you have updated to OS X 10.8.2 (including supplement).
Install Xcode 4.5.2 from App Store.
From Xcode 4.5.2 preferences > Downloads > Components, Install the Command Line Tools.
(This puts the compilation environment in the expected /usr/bin location.)
Now, resolve /Developer with a hard link:
    sudo ln /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer /Developer
    sudo chown root:wheel /Developer
I cannot promise that the GTK jhbuild won't be checking for other dependencies that the above steps do not correct.
In your startup file, you should add the following to your PATH: /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin

The update to Xcode with Mountain Lion support was posted today but attempts to download it from a Mountain Lion system result in an "Xcode can't be installed on "<disk>" because the version of OS X is too new.".  This just me?

  • HT4854 I can't re-download my copy of lion of the app store as my current OSX is too new.

I have tried to re-install and older OSX (lion) from a boot-able USB stick. When i attempt to boot from this stick i get a grey crossed out circle on the screen, stopping me from proceeding.
I am unable to re download OSX Lion from my mac as it is currently on 10.9.4. It says this OS is too new to install this software. My workaround for this was getting my older mac that has lion installed on it and restoring the InstallESD.dmg to a clean Mac OS Extended (journaled) partition. However this still failed to install.
Can i get some guidance on this as it is very frustrating and running out of all logical ideas.
    Many thanks.

Lion comes with FaceTime. Look in your dock or in the Applications folder.
