Facetime won't open on my iMac

I have an iMac i7 with OS x 10.6.4 but the facetime.dmg file won't open it says the following disk images can't be opened because of "invalid checksum." What is that, and how do I get it to work? I need to vid chat from my comp to an ipod touch. Please help!

See my respond here. It could help you too in case you have PeerGuardian installed on your machine. I've had this problem for the last two months and it was driving me nuts (especially because my iPad and my iPhone, both worked perfectly on my home network, the same one I was trying to get my iMac to work with) and no one was able to fix it. Until today, I finally found out what was causing this Facetime signing in problem.

updated my mac to mountain lion 10.7.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install saying that I need to see developer. Whenever I try to open my appstore, mail or facetime it says that the programmes need to be installed and might not be compatible with this version of mac operating system. Can anyone help me?

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.
Here's a thread that helped me with iPhoto:

  • Itunes won't open on my iMac.

I have an iMac with an intel core i5 processor running 10.6.8 and itunes 11.1.4 won't open at all. Once clicked it bounces in the dock a few times and then nothing. Halp!

Hello! Way up there... kiss the sky for me and then try the following:
First, I would run Disc Utility; Verify Disc, Verify Disc Permissions, & Repair Disc Permissions.
Then I would go here > http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ for the iTunes 11.1.4. .dmg file download. In my experience, by proceeding in this manner rather than by using the Software Update Application alone & while online (which does not let the user know that their chances for a good installation are better if you run disc utility first; download the .dmg file and install iTunes (manually) by double-clicking on the .dmg installer file. Note this step can be done while off-line which reduces the possibility of a network packet loss &/or corruption.
So, unless you do not have enough free space on your hard drive, and a min. of 2 GB RAM, that should work.
The only other thing that I know sometimes works is by booting up in safe mode (restart by holding down the shift key until you get into Safe Mode, sign in there (as the administrator of course) & then try to start iTunes in safe mode (even though there is no sound in safe mode...that doesn't matter.) If it opens in Safe Mode (without being online) it will open when you restart in Standard Mode whether you are online or not.
    Best Regards,
    mm~

  • App Store, Messages and FaceTime Won't Open

    I own a Macbook Pro (15-inch mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.9.5)
I was using my Messages App just this morning and all of a sudden it stopped working.
I have tried opening it from the Applications Folder as well as directly from my Dock.
What happens is the icon for the Messages App bounces several times (usually three after I press it the first time) and the screen will not appear.
The icon shows currently that I have three unread messages and even when I hold and click and try to open a "new message" or an "unread message" the screen won't open.
I tried several other apps just to see if this was an isolated incident, but I found that FaceTime, App Store and iPreview will not open either. They all bounce a few times, but they will not open a screen. My App Store even shows that there is one new update, but it won't open.
I have tried so many things from a lot of older threads but I am completely clueless on what to do.
    Can anyone help me?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Why does a page open in safari on my iBook, same page won't open on my iMac

this is driving me crazy. since the last security update or so, (not 10.4.6) i have not been able to load my 4 most used pages in safari on my iMac, they just won't load. every other site loads. no problems accessing the same pages on my iBook, same apple updates as my iMac and i sync the bookmarks through dot mac. i've read the threads, trying all pieces of advice, except disk warrior or whatever the utility was. but wait there's more. opera, and camino won't open these pages on my iMac either. i have copied the 3 internet.plist and safari.plist from my iBook and put them in preferences on my iMac. still no go.
i'd be most grateful for any other ideas or suggestions.
    cheers

    my solution...
did a repair disk from the 10.4 disk.
it found some "problems" that needed repair on
the volume. not sure what that means and sorry
i didn't make note of it.
most important, safari is working like a charm
    and my iMac seems zippier.
    cheers

  • FaceTime won't Open on OSX 10.6.8

So I just bought the official FaceTime app from my Mac's App store for $0.99. It downloaded and installed uninterrupted. My issue is that It won't open at all. I'm now attempting to delete/trash the app, in hopes of reinstalling it, but I can't do that completely, because "PhoneNumbers" and "FaceTime" are in use. I don't understand how either can be in use, considering the only programs running are "Finder" and "Safari". When I did try to run FaceTime, it always gave the error, saying it couldn't run and had to shut down.
Help me, Apply Support Communities. You're my only hope.

Did you go through the verification process where Apple sends you an e mail for the purpose of verifying that your address is valid?
If I remember correctly, you must respond to a link in the e mail to verify.

  • Application and Installer won't open/launch on iMac (Maxon Cinema 4D) help!

This is a strange one. I have an application that refuses to open.
I've bought an iMac 24" Intel 3.06Ghz (not the brand new one, but a 2008 model). Everything works fantastically, but I'm having a problem with one particular application - Maxon Cinema 4D (R9.012). I realise this is an older version of Cinema 4D (they are now up to R11), but I have some 3D projects built in the older version that do not convert nicely when opened in the more recent versions. So, on some rare occasions, I need to open the older version to render a particular image successfully, etc.
But, I am finding that it won't open, and neither will the original VISE installer for the application. I don't believe this is an Intel compatibility problem, as I also have the use of an almost identical iMac 24" Intel 2.4Ghz (identical, obviously apart from the screen size and processor/graphics card) and the version of Cinema 4D R9.012 that won't open on my home computer DOES open fine on this computer. So, I am left bemused.
When I say that the application won't load, what happens when I double-click is that the dock momentarily expands, as if the app icon is about to appear, but nothing surfaces and the dock immediately goes back to it's normal self.
I've tried the instructions on this page, to no avail: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060314080135452
I've tried resetting the PRAM, to no avail.
I'm now lost as to what to try next. I've never encountered an app/installer refusing to open, without seeing some kind of warning or dialogue box.
Can anyone advise me what this could be caused by, and how to overcome it?
    Thanks for reading!
    Jme

In case anybody comes across this same problem, a fresh Leopard installatino solved the problem.
I migrated my iMac to another iMac, installed Leopard afresh, and voila, I was able to install Cinema 4D now! I then migrated my iMac back again, and everything seems to be fine now.
    Very odd.

  • FaceTime won't open since Mountain Lion Upgrade

Ever since upgrading my retina macbook pro to Mountain Lion, my FaceTime App won't open. The camera works just fine in PhotoBooth, so I don't think that's the issue. The application itself just won't open. No errors or anything come up. When I right click the icon in the dock, it just says "Application Not Responding".
    Any ideas???

  • Safari won't open on my iMac

Hi! Safari has been unable to open at all on my iMac (it's been about a year now.) I've been using Firefox but I still prefer Safari. When I click the icon it starts loading the homepage but then nothing happens (it says "application not responding").
Any idea why this is happening? It's Safari 4.1.1
    thanks!

    Welcome to the forums!
If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    • history.plist
    • lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.

  • FaceTime won't open. Error -1712

Was using FaceTime last night and wasn't working well, kept freezing. Today won't open at all keep getting error message -1712

I have also deleted the Preference files from the system Library.
Plus deleted the app, and reinstalled.  However, I am only able to reinstall from the zip file I downloaded back in 2010, as I did not buy it through the App store, so it isn't  in my list of purchased apps.

Just like the latest Flash update, it downloads but I can't play the videos that  prompted me to download it. Im sure you understand my frustration. Thnaks in advance guys.

v10.6.3 Snow Leopard is outdated. You need to update your Mac OS X to v10.6.8
Installing the combo will bring your software up to date >  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed.
iTunes should work but you may need to reinstall Flash > Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player

  • My FaceTime won't open with OS X 10.10.1

I am using OS X 10.10.1 on my iMAC and overtime I try to open FaceTime.app it crashes.  Reopens give me the same crash.  Is there any way to reinstall this version of the App or are there other solutions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

I recently installed facetime 1.0.2 on a Macbook pro with osx 10.6.8. Facetime invariably loses sound from my end during every conversation after an indeterminate time. Facetime will also often not even open when I click the doc icon.
    Help please:)

    Hi jaybird24,
It sounds like there may be something wrong with the installation of this app. The best troubleshooting step will be to uninstall, then reinstall the application from the Mac App Store.
For information on how to do so, see this article:
