  • Factory reset macbook air - HOW??

    Hi there,
I have an 11" macbook air running Mavericks, and have since acquired a new macbook pro retina.  I want to give the macbook air to my son, but before doing so - would like to perform a factory reset.  I am not sure how to do this.  Is there a process, or are there steps that anyone could walk me through?  I have tried restarting while holding "command" + "R." but it looks as if I can only do a software restore, and it won't do a clean re-write of the whole system (including user home folders, etc.)
    Please help!!

Essentially this is the procedure: Preparing Macbook for sale.

  • How to factory reset Macbook Air with Mavericks

I work at a pawn shop and have a Macbook air with OS X 10.9 installed.  I need to be able to reset this, so the previous owner's information is not compromised before selling it.  When powering on the Mac I am unable to use any boot commands to get to terminal or recovery options because a screen with a lock and a password entry box show up.  How can I bypass this to reset the mac?
    Thanks

I have addressed the issue with the other team members going forward, but I still have potentially 1-4 months of affected inventory...which is potentially a huge financial loss.
I don't doubt that this particular machine was tested before it was purchased, but if the general assumption was, passwords are no big deal, we can just boot to recoery mode and reset the mac later, then this would have been no cause for concern.
either way, I have to find away around this for my current inventory.  I will get some torx screw drivers and try removing the ram.
    thank you

  • Resetting MacBook Air to factory settings

    Hi,
I wish to reset my MacBook Air to its original factory settings as I cannot get rid of this Java 3.16 update virus that stops me from streaming videos online.  I have already copied all my files to an external hard drive, so am not worried about losing anything.  I do not appear to have any backups on my Time Machine, so this doesn't seem to be an option for me either.  Please advise in plain english how to proceed as I only have a basic understanding of Mac systems.
    Thanks

Why do you think you have a Java virus?  Before doing an erase and reinstall, you might try going to Thomas Reed's site, http://www.thesafemac.com and check out his information on Java and problems you are having.  If that does not help, then erasing and reinstalling will definitely clean things up.
To 'reset to factory settings' you must erase the internal storage and reinstall Mac OS X and your applications.
What version of Mac OS X did your MacBook Air come with, was it Yosemite as noted in your information bar?
If it was Yosemite, you can restart the MBA and hold the Command and R keys, that will startup on the Recovery HD, a hidden partition on the machine.  Then select the Utilities drop down and then Disk Utility.
Highlight the internal storage, MacIntosh HD, in the left panel of the Disk Utility window, and then Erase.  That will remove the information on the storage.
Then quit Disk Utility and select Install Mac OS X from the utilities drop down and that will reinstall Yosemite.  After that you will have to restore your applications from your backup copies.  But, be careful what you reinstall so you do not reinstall the problem software.

  • Factory reset macbook pro 10.6.8 late 2011 model...how?

I want to do a factory reset my macbook pro 10.6.8 snow leopard .... I do not have a install disc as I believe this mode of software did not come with one as the software was already installed.. Can anyone verify this and give the details to factory reset the computer?

Do a backup before doing anything.
Go to the App store and download Yosemite. Quit the installer and use the program below to make a bootable USB drive. Boot from the USB drive, run Disk Utility to erase the disk choosing Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the option button to select GUID. Then run the installer on the USB drive. When Setup Assistant opens, import your data from Time Machine.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

  • Factory Reset, hpeprint email setup

Hi, I used to have my username linked to my printer but had to do a factory reset and
everything was cleared.  I had to to do the webservice setup again and now i can not use
the user name I was using.
How to user my oringal username instead of creating a new name for the email address.
    Thanks

Hi there, if I understand you correctly you had customised your printers email address but then subsequently had to remove and re-enable web services on the printer. If so then unfortunately the customised ePrint email address will not be available to use any longer and you will need to use an alternative name if you wish to customise the current printer email address.
    Best.

  • Resetting macbook air running yosemite

I am trying to reset a macbook air running yosemite.  When I get to to OS X Utilities, I try to connect to the wi-fi but it tells me "could not be joined"  doesn't give me the option to put in the password.  Now going to utilities and selecting "Join Other Network" I can get to where I can type the network name and password but then i get "No network found"... Anyone has encounter this?

Older versions of the OS used to work just fine.
For the last time, the Mac OS has never been able to write to a NTFS partition without 3rd party software. So, if you were able to do it in the past, you had to have been using some software that you can't remember installing.

  • How do you factory reset macbook

My friend has just bought a shop display macbook laptop from Duty Free Sales at Bristol Airport for her daughter. They put password in to prevent customers playing with it. She cannot get answer from shop as to what password is and unless she flies out again security will not let her through to the shop. How can she do a factory reset please? She doesn't have a Leopard disk
    Thanks
    Rick

Rick - you should get the install discs from the seller. As ypw mentioned, you can reset the password using those.
The following instructions you should use with caution, as it requires booting the computer into single user mode.
Otherwise, with the computer off you could hold down Apple Key and S and turn the computer on.
It will boot into single user mode - command prompts. You will then have to mount the disk, the instructions are provided at the last second, but it's the command fsck -y then the command mount -uw /
Once mounted, type passwd and it will ask you to enter the new password. You could also run passwd <username> (insert the username there).
By running the first option, that will enable the root account and set the password to whatever, therefore to login you would enter the username root and the password you supplied.
Be careful not to mess with much, and once you use it try to get the leopard disc and do a reinstall of the OS when you get home.

  • IMac + iPhone + Macbook Air setup

Somewhat new to the mac world, particularly the networking/sharing aspects of iTunes.
My wife and I have an iMac with separate accounts but that share the same iTunes library. We both have iPhones and those phones are sync'd to the iMac - all is working fine.
But now we have a Macbook Air that we take on the road with us (also separate accounts). When home, that Macbook Air is networked in to our home network with full access to our iMac, etc. While on the road we would like to use the Macbook Air and iTunes to manage our library, purchase new tunes, videos etc while on the road. When we open iTunes on the laptop it asks for a library or to create a new one and we've been hesitant to choose since we don't want to have two separate libraries that could get out of sync, etc.
So how can we maintain a single library across these devices that doesn't get out of whack while we're on the road ? How should I be setting up iTunes on the Macbook Air to do this ?
    thanks

Chris - that was the tip I have been waiting for. After I saw this, I was able to see that sometime in the past, when we imported all of my wife's calendar items from Outlook, all of her repeating items (birthday's etc.) came over as single events going out about 200 years instead of repeating events. Once I turned off calendar sync on all devices, cleared out the calendar that contained these repeating items, deleted all calendars from icloud.com, and turned calendar sync back on, all problems went away.
Here are the steps I followed. First, I created an archive of my iCal using the File->Export command.  I turned off the calendar sync on all devices, including my computer. I did a search on "" and viewed the resultant list. In my case, I saw thousand of entries from 1914 out about 200 years. I found one of the repeating items and double clicked to see what calendar it lived in. Once I determined that nothing too important was in that calendar, I deleted the whole thing (your mileage may vary). I then went to iCloud.com and deleted all calendars that were on the site. Once this was done, I waited a bit for the delete to take hold. I then turn iCloud address book sync back on on the Mac. Once I was sure the sync worked properly by checking on iCloud.com, I turned on iCloud calendar sync on all other devices. Everything sync'd perfectly after that.
    Good luck!
