FACTORY RESET YOUR PHONE - does it ever actually f...

Half the advice given here is to reset the phone.
A huge amount of time is then potentially spent reinstalling and reconfiguring the apps.
Indian "script monkey" call centres give that "advice" out all the time.
Does it ever fix anything?
Especially as restoring the old backup is likely to restore whatever the old problem was. For example if your drive c: space was low, because you had loads of emails under Sent, those will go right back in. And I bet orphaned files which got stuck in the 1000484b directory will get put back too.

Not all the problems get resolved thru' Factory reset but yes, certainly some do .. Thats why you may need a Soft reset or a Hard reset to overcome certain other issues..
..and it depends on what is Backed-up. Its advised that you only back-up the important data such as Contacts / Calendar entries before the reset and restore them after the reset..Messages (not e-mails) may be synced with Nokia Suite if large in nos. so that phone memory is left free..My personal experience shows that when a phone is NEW, you tend to install a lot of applications, may be for fun or curiosity or for showing off and do not really need them. After the excitement dies down, Reset the phone and install only those you really rally need. Won't be surprised if the no. of applications re-installed are less than 50% of initially installed ..

  • I've factory reset my iPhone twice, about to be three times. has anyone else had issues that force them to factory reset their phones.

So I got my iPhone 6 on the day it came out and it has been the most frustrating experience I've ever had with apple.  I've had to factory reset my phone twice, probably about to be three times once i get home from work.  The first time was trying to transfer my stuff from my old iPhone and right after it finished my iPhone 6 turned itself off then turned on to the boot up screen (the one with the apple logo) and then shut off then did the same thing.  this forced my to factory reset my new iphone literally the day i got it.  The next day i was trying to upload my music and basically the same thing happened again, forcing me to reset my phone for a second time.  Just now (its been two weeks that I've owned my new phone)i tried to get on twitter and the app crashed then my phone reset itself and when it loaded to the unlock screen, instead of my background it was just a black screen with the time and the unlock slide.  when i unlocked it, it went back to the normal background and the main screen.  Because whenever i would turn off (not power off, but put it to sleep) the phone and turn it back on it would do the same thing.  I decided to restart it (actually turn it completely off and then back on) and now it will show the boot up screen then turn off.  I understand that there is the solution of factory resetting my iPhone, but 3 times in 2 weeks is pretty unacceptable, seeing as i had a 4s for almost 3 years and never once had to factory reset it and its also incredibly annoying to have to redownload all of my stuff.  Has anyone else had this problem? is there anyway i can keep this from continuing to happen?  is it a software issue or is it the phone itself that is messing up?

WiseJD, thank you for your suggestions.  Well the first two restorations were the first and second day (9/19 and 9/20) that i had my 6 and both times i chose to restore is as new.  since then there haven't been any issues until now.  granted the first time my phone messed up was after i used the At&t transfer app which made me think it couldve been something that corrupted my device.  the second time though started with me attempting to download music from the itunes store app on the phone.  for whatever reason it would download but not but it wouldnt process and install the music.  Then i tried to download it from my computer and thats when the second screw up occurred. that time i dont think it was an issue of my phone being corrupted because it was already acting strangely before i ever plugged it into my computer.  This third time, i'm at work so i havent been able to do anything about it, i wasnt downloading anything and my phone was not hooked up to a computer, i simply tried to open twitter and then all this happened. and it has been a solid almost two weeks without incident which makes me think its my phone and not corrupt files.  also looking at forums, not just these but other online, i haven't really seen anyone with the same problem which adds to my thought that its a problem with my phone.
Just to be clear, the first time this happened, the iphone would display the boot up screen then shut off then turn on and display the boot up screen, then shut of and kept going on like that until i put my iphone into recovery mode and factory reset it.  the second time the iphone would display the boot up screen and then shut off, but wouldnt turn on unless i pressed the power button again.  this third time is the same story.  i dont know if this makes a difference or if its symptomatic of different problems but i figured it wouldnt hurt to explain in detail the issues that happened each separate time.
Also on a side note, i havent done anything like jailbreak it, mess with it download or any third party apps not on the app store.

Listen to the advice the Apple "Genius" is providing.
Basic troubleshooting for any iDevice (and most electronics) is reset, restart, restore.  Unless you just like wasting everyone's time and never getting your issue resolved.

You need to restore it with iTunes or wipe it from the phone itself... Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.  Either of these will create a factory fresh phone, thus removing the restrictions.  Note that ALL user data will be wiped.

If you need to restore your phone but can't turn off Find My iPhone, you'll have to force it into recovery mode in order to restore it, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.

  • Warning to all on resetting your phone !!!

This is my fault but at the same time I extremely bloody angry!!!!
The isssue of trying to downphotos from my phone to my computer should not be a major hassell, however out of shear frustration & loss of patients using Blackberry link I inadvertely hit the restore button thinking it would correct any settings that I may have changed from the factory installed settings but no it installed a Competely new version from blackberry with a new pin.
I have now lost every thing that I had on the phone including all the important photos that i needed, all contacts, even all installed apps that I had,  so I thought since I did a full back only yestereday, not to worry simply reinstall the back up files, but no it won't reconise the backed up files.
So I go the Blackberry website to a phone contact for technical support, I took a bit of effort but i finally get in contact with them. I now have my phone with all data returned.
So if you are using Blackberry Link on your computer do not reset the device unless you are prepared to lose everything that you have on your phone & if you are going to reset your phone back to factory setting make sure you have done a full backup on your phone prior.
This has caused me a whole heap of time that wasn't necessary but a valuable lesson.
P.s. My apologies to all that my have read my rant. It was my own fault as I stated above.
    I

Mike-W, you said the in the first paragraph you hit restore.
Restore a backup and Reset to factory are two very different functions.
I'm don't see anything you said regarding changing the PIN, I'm not sure why Craig is commenting on that.
    Good luck.

Try restarting it. If this does not work, then hard restart it which is holding the power and home button until the product ***** off. If this does not help either, plug it into the computer and restore it. Make sure you back up the device before you restore it though! • Maintenance Boot Mode factory reset my phone TWICE

Phone was charging in car, then the screen was black with yellow caution triangle. At the top of the screen, a DOS prompt appeared with FACTORY RESET IN RED. The FIRST time I didn't see what it was doing, I panicked and hit the home key and back key to stop it and it erased all my information and it did a factory reset. I was on the phone for 2 hours with VZ Tech who had no idea what happened and had not heard of it occurring. The SECOND time I had someone take a picture of the screen and there were 3 options. Safe mode, normal mode and factory reset. The volume changes the selection and it comes up with the option to factory reset, to confirm your selection you press the HOME key, hit it again on accident. This is very upsetting for this phone is not even a month old and I've talked to people and this shouldn't be happening.

"the only thing worse than usb charging is car charging, it's unregulated & will overcharge/kill the battery."
That's just plain wrong in almost every way a statement can be wrong.  I don't even know where to begin.  It's just wrong.  That's not how charging works with lithium ion batteries.  The power adapter only provides power.  It doesn't regulate charging.  A lithium ion battery won't "overcharge" because the charging current is reduced as the cell approaches its maximum capacity and stops when it is full.  When battery voltage drops below a certain mark, low-current charging resumes and tops off the battery again.  That's controlled inside the phone and battery pack, not the power supply.
This person either has a defective phone or a defective charger.  But charging from a USB port or a car charger is not inherently bad or wrong.
    Please don't mislead people.

  • Are you able to regain information about your password if forgotten by email instead of resetting your phone?

I just put in a password but I just lost the information on what the password was. I need help because I just got this phone for Xmas. Is anyone else having they same trouble or have gone through what I have to deal with right now? Any help will do. Is there a possibility of asking Apple for a reset link by email? I do not want to reset my phone because much information is on here and there is no backup.

Apple does not have your passcode for the phone.
You will have to do a restore.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • HT4946 i factory reset my phone on i tunes, no it wont log on a network

hey, im hoping someone can help me pls? i logged onto i tunes and it told me i needed 2 do a factory reset 2 able me 2 get ios7. ive done this and now my phone has reset and is asking 4 a network. i put in 02 but it and try 2 join but it keeps saying cant find network. has anyone got any ideas pls as im worried ive turned my phone into a brick! thanks warren

Have you tried the hard reboot? Simultaneously press the sleep/wake and the home buttons for 10-15 seconds until the device reboots (ignore the shutdown screen).
If it doesn't work, try to put the phone in DFU mode.
    1. Connect your iPhone to the computer and start iTunes.
    2. Turn off your iPhone by holding down the Sleep button and slide to power off.
    3. Press and hold down the Sleep button and Home button simultaneously.
    4. After 10 seconds release the Sleep button but continue to hold the Home button down.
    5. iTunes will pop up a window that says it has "detected an iPhone in recovery mode."
Your device is now in DFU mode and can be restored using iTunes. The iPhone screen will remain black until iTunes restores the iPhone.

  • Blank Screen after factory reset 7911 phone

    Hello guys,
I had a weird issue on an 7911 ip phone. It was connected to my network and on the display of the phone was saying "ethernet disconnected".
What i did was a soft and a hard reset using 123456789*0# and then 3497672850*# following the guidelines of a conversation in the forum
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2166581
After the factory reset the device has a blank screen (I left it for more than an hour connected on the network bearing in mind that some processes might be loading in the background and the firmware will load at some point..that didn't happen) and it is unable to receive an ip address ("show ip dhcp bindings", shows nothing related to the mac address of that device).
To eliminate the possibility that the problem might be on the network card of the phone, i've factory reset a working phone using the above described procedure.
I had the same problem with that phone too.
Are there are any log commands that i can use to further investigate my issue?  (I can't see any logs using "terminal monitor"command)
I am using call manager express 4.3.0 on a cisco 2800 router.

    Dragan,
I tried what you suggested with no luck.
What i noted is that, when i plug the power adapter on the phone and connect the ethernet cable on the switch port of the phone (the other end goes to a d-link small switch) the light on the small d-link switch doesn't come up. However if i plug the ethernet cable on the pc port of the phone the light goes green. I checked it with two phones that i've factory reset and it is the same problem.
What i understood from this, is that the pc is unable to retrieve an ip from the dhcp server and the necessary option 150 to locate the tftp server and retrieve the necessary firmware.
Gordon, due to the above mentioned problem i can't proceed with wireshark since i don't have network connectivity between the phone and my workstation.
Guys, do you have any alternatives that i can give a try?
    Thanks a banch!
