Factory resetting my mac without the original disk

Hello community!
I would like to factory reset my MacBook Pro from mid 2010 with OS X v10.6 but I do not have the original installation CDs. So here's two amazing questions:
1) Is there any way I can get the CD's, either by burning them using a recovery partition or either by Apple itself (and the price it'll cost)?
2) If not, or because it'll cost me too much to buy the CDs from Apple, is there any way to factory reset without the CDs? Also, would I need the account information of the administrator account? Because I don't have these information (not that it's a stolen MacBook but I just bought it from a random guy for really cheap). Also, if it's possible, how do I reinstall the bundled applications that came with the MacBook such as iLife?
Thank you guys for responding as fast as you can.

iLife comes in a separate DVD.
I have not seen that the main system install DVD restore anything but the OS. In the modern days of the Lions, when you reinstall a Mac you can download the iLife apps from the App Store if you are entitled to them (i.e., the Mac you have registered to your AppleID came with them). Don't know for older systems (didn't use iLife back then).

  • How do I reactivate and install Adobe Acrobat on a new computer without the original disk?

I am moving to a new computer and the Acrobat disk I used to have got lost somewhere in the office environment... so, how do I deactivate Acrobat on my old computer and activate/install it ion my new computer without the original disk?

If you were using the same serial number then, yes. You are only allowed two installs and they should be on computers used by the licensee (you).
You would need to deactivate on any additional computers if this is the case.
Just an FYI, you are in the Adobe Reader forum. If this doesn't work, you'll want to head to the Acrobat forum where you'll find more experienced users.

  • Is it possible to deactivate CS4 from a PC and transfer to a Mac without the original discs?

Is it possible to deactivate CS4 from a PC and transfer to a Mac without the original discs? The original discs were thrown away in a house move, but I'd like to transfer my CS4 applications from a PC to a Mac; is there anything I can do? Where is the serial number located?

Licenses are platform specific, so a Windows version will not install/activate on a Mac.  Platform swaps are only supported for the most recent release (CS6).  The only way you might be able to do that is to have a Windows emulator installed on the Mac so that you have the required environment.

  • HT1430 how do i factory reset my ipad without the having the login password

how do i factory reset my ipad without the having the login password

You force your iPad into Recovery Mode.
    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
    5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost.

  • How Can I restore my mac without the original software disks?

Hi I have a preowned macbook pro that i got from a friend. I would like to restore the computer back to its original settings because it is asking me for user passwords when i go to install something and the old owner does not remember the password. I do not have the disks the computer came with. Is there any other option to restoring the computer back to its original settings without the disks? I am still trying to figure out the mac "world" so may not be aware of all settings.

First, open "System Information" app or "System Profiler", and copy "Model Identifier", and copy it here. I'm not completely sure if you have a MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Instead of reinstalling OS X, first try resetting the user password. To do it, open  > About this Mac, and see "Version". If it's 10.7 or 10.8, follow these steps > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101 If it's 10.6 or older, you need the DVDs, so call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After doing that, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, and press the + button to create a new administrator user for you

Duplicate installation disks can be ordered from Apple customer service.  You will have to provide them with the MBP serial number and there is a charge.
    Ciao.

However, I do not have the installation disk. So the  question remains as is the title: How do I format my Mac without the installation disk? i bought this mac book pro last year and im not sure if the warrantly is expired yet. If there is noway to format it without the disk, am i able to purchase the disk in apple store? Many thanks.

You don't. You need the installation disk. You can't buy the disk in an Apple store. You need to call AppleCare and order one. Have you serial number handy. To check your warranty status:

  • Erasing a MacBook WITHOUT the original install disks??

I am selling my MacBook. I no longer have the install disks BUT I have a new copy of Snow Leapard.
How can I erase my stuff from the computer WITHOUT the original install disks?

The "buyer" is my sister. She is not very tech savvy and will just be emailing and web surfing until the Mac book dies.
Still, the original startup discs contain things like the Apple Hardware Test that may come in handy.
Will installing SL erase the stuff on the computer??
If you want to, yes. If not, no.

  • I factory reset my Mac Book Pro and when entering the Upgrade SN of LR5 it says it's Invalid. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I factory reset my Mac Book Pro and when entering the Upgrade SN of LR5 it says it's Invalid. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It will be necessary for you to install Lightroom from an upgrade installer. An upgrade requires the original serial number from the version that you first purchased, as well as the serial number for the upgrade. The upgrade serial number, by itself, will not work.

  • HT1338 I would like to perform a clean install on my macbook pro. I do not have the original disks that came the mac, however I know it was purchased in 2008.

Upgrading MacBook Pro to new machine want to unistall. No disc.

Strictly speaking you are supposed to supply the old discs with a computer since they are part of the computer package (for Macs at least).
Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac.  They may be able to provide a replacement set of discs for a fee.  These discs will be for whatever OS was installed on the computer originally.
As far as your files are concerned, you can use another Mac or any retail version discs that will work in the old Mac to wipe the drive.  To be more specific it would help to know what computers and which discs you actually own.
If you install an operating system (OS) on a Mac you also need to provide the discs (i'm talking about pre-OSX 10.7).
I have seen Macs sold without the original OS discs.  If you do that then you at least need to provide the disc for the one on the computer.  I guess you could try to sell the computer without an OS but that might be hard.  If I was buying your computer I would want to see it boot, and I also might not want the hassle of getting an OS disc for it befre I could use it in any way.  You'd have to come down a bit to make it sell.
Given all the above, I would still go with Snow Leopard.  The retail disc itself will be as cheap as the original.  The only things it might miss vs. the original will be bundled software (most of which will be outdated, though somebody might prefer older version to none) and perhaps the hardware test utility.  Having a slightly newer OS might make the computer more attractive.

  • Inserted a new hard drive into my Mac Boo Pro 2008 15 inch and don't have the original disks. Wondering if there was a way to purchase them.

Inserted a new hard drive into my Mac Boo Pro 2008 15 inch and don't have the original disks. Wondering if there was a way to purchase them from Apple or if I buy them off ebay will they work? Also its A Macbook Pro 2008 15 inch glossy with 2GB of Ram the serial number is worn off what kind OS do I need?

Wondering if there was a way to purchase them from Apple
Yes. Contact Apple Support using one of the options in the Contact Us below. You will need your MBP's serial number and payment method for a nominal fee. If the exterior serial number is illegible look elsewhere for it: MacBook Pro: How to find the serial number
or if I buy them off ebay will they work?
Probably not. Grey discs are system-specific and will work only for the exact model MBP with which they shipped. It's likely that Apple will charge you less money, and it will be guaranteed to work.

  • Do I need the original disk that came with a mac or can I just buy the OS software??

Hi I recently bought a used macbook and the seller did not have the original disks that came with the computer. What I was wondering is if I needed to install a new hard drive in the event that mine fails, can I just buy a copy of the OS and install it on the new hard drive or do I need the specific disks that came with the machine??
    Thanks for your help

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You say that you have Mac OS X 10.7.5, so if it came preinstalled, see that you can't reinstall it because it's registered to the old owner. Call Apple to get replacement DVDs
If you want, you can upgrade to Mountain Lion. See if your computer is supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs Open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion
