Fade Bullets on Text Build

I'd like to do something that I THINK is obvious and simple, but cannot find a way to do it (without a lot of extra objects, positioning, etc...)
I can easily build a paragraph by bullet points
I can easily assign individual builds (in or out) for each bullet
HOWEVER, what I'd like to do is fade (opacity, I guess) each previous bullet point as the next bullet point appears. Essentially, either (a) individual actions for each bullet point (not apparantly supported) or (b) a FADE to X% in the out-going build.
Anyone solve this?

If you give the paragraph a build, and select "By Highlighted Bullet" in the Delivery dropdown menu, the previous bullets will be faded by a preset amount. However, there is no user control over the degree of fade, and no other type of action is assignable.

  • Problem with bullets in text boxes

    Hi,
    I haven't seen this problem written up anywhere but I am
    having problems with my text formatting differently in text boxes
    when I've used bullets in the text. I am using Captivate 2.
    So here's what happens:
    If the text caption has a bullet
    anywhere in the body, when I publish my captivate course, the text
    looks like normal 12 pt Arial.
    If there is a text box without any bullets, the text looks
    like it was bolded.
    The next result is that I have two types of body text
    throughout my course.
    I went into every slide and verified that there is no other
    text formatting going on and I did find that Impact was sometimes
    in the same text boxes where I had bullets but I finally got rid of
    all the impact. However, the problem remains. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Lin

    Hi Lin and welcome to our community
    My guess here is that you are using the Transparent caption
    type. When you do this, the caption anti-aliases the text inside
    and many claim it looks either bold or fuzzy. You have two options.
    1. Use Bullets on all captions. Don't worry, you don't have
    to actually SEE the bullets. Just press Enter a few times and apply
    bullets to one of the blank lines. Then size the caption so the
    bullet part is hidden from view.
    2. Implement a trick discovered by fellow Adobe Community
    Expert Paul Dewhurst. You can see his trick by

    Hopefully one of these works for you... Rick

  • Text builds in KN3

    I am trying to attain a number of build effects in Keynote. Basically what I’m trying to do is very similar to this clip
    http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsnb2?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s= dhs
    (I know its Dell, and doesn’t even look that good, but its the effects I’m concerned with).
    I am currently using a slide with a text large box for the body of the text. The words I want to appear first are in separate text boxes. Here are my issues:
    Firstly, is this the best way to do such a build?
    Secondly, I would like the individual words to come in one by one (unlike in the Dell preso). The Build Inspector only seems to give me the option of “other bullets”. What’s the best way to achieve the desired build.
    Thirdly, I can’t figure out how to transit the colour of the “stand out” words to the body text colour.
    Fourthly, how do I make a word “blink”.
    Any help much appreciated (and don’t hold the Dell thing against me).
    Cheers,

    It sounds like the "text boxes" you are using are bullet boxes instead, judging from what the Build Inspector is telling you -- regular text boxes should not produce that option.
    Apart from that, it sounds like you have the appropriate way to approach it -- create the block of text first, then create separate text boxes for each of the words, and line them up with the words in the full text. If you don't group the text boxes that the individual words are in, you should be able to build each of them separately. To fade the individual words into the full text, I would do a dissolve for the build-out of the individual words simultaneous with a dissolve build-in for the full text. This produces the effect you see in the example.
    As for "blinking", I'm not sure there is a straightforward way to do this. I suppose you could make several copies of the same word, and have each appear and disappear one after the other. That's a kludge, and someone might have a better suggestion.

  • Bullet animations. "Build With Previous" missing

    I am making a presentation and I have a number of bullets I want to appear at the same time as opposed to after one another. However in Keynote the only options available in the "build order" inspector are "On Click" and "After Previous". "With Previous" which used to be an option on older versions appears to be gone.
    Is there any way to fix this or do I need to switch to PowerPoint, LaTeX Beamer or another tool?

    Gary Scotland wrote:

    The default is that bulleted text will appear all together.
    Yes. What I am looking for is better control over bullet delivery so to speak.
    Example:
    A
    A1
    A2
    B
    C
    D
    Say I want A to be delivered as the slide is revealed, then A1 and A2 at the same time, B and C simultaneously and then D alone.
    Keynote lets me deliver C after B or A2 after A1 automatically, but not simultaneously - and that is my challenge.
    Gary Scotland wrote:

    You are using the wrong control, use:
    Inspector > Animate > Build In > Delivery
    That does not give me the option of letting different items be delivered at the same time. It lets me choose for example "by bullet group" but not whether a couple of specified bullets are delivered at the same time.
    According to Keynote Help I am in the right place.
    It states there are supposed to be three timing options:
    On Click: The build plays when you click.
    With Build [number]: The build plays at the same time as the build before it.
    After Build [number]: The build plays after the previous build finishes. Adjust the delay using the arrows next to the Delay field.
    Though I can only see On Click and After Build.

  • Fade effect bold text in all IEs

    I have created the following page
    Cnet about
    and used the spry fade effect on the section of text at the bottom
    below the "A Sampling of what we offer" graphic.
    It works fine but in IE6 and IE7 when viewed on an LCD
    monitor, the bold blue text looks very choppy. I assume this has to
    do with bad handling of opacity in IE. Does anyone know a hack to
    fix this?

    Hi artdoggy,
    That is an IE bug with several workarounds. The first
    workaround which is much simpler, is to specify a background color
    or font on the element that you are fading in. This somehow
    triggers IE to avoid this behavior.
    The other workaround is to use an effect onPostEffect
    observer or finish function to unset the filter function on the
    element. You can see sample of how to use an observer here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/samples/effects/observers_sample.html
    You'll have to do something like this in your observer:
    effect.element.style.filter = "";

  • Undesired bullet pointed text automatically upon creating a new text box

    Hi there! Due to the snow I'm working from home today but I have a little problem back in work that would be nice to get some help on before i go back hopefully tomorrow so i can continue at full speed!
    I'm using Mac OS X (can't remember which version from the top of my head but something quite new!), and InDesign CS3. Basically, every time i create a new text box, or place an excel file into the document (having to do a lot of that at the moment, creating a price guide), it is in bullet point form, and although it's quite easy to go and turn it back off, with me having to do this quite a lot it's getting somewhat frustrating. It does it every single time i create a new text box even if i have turned it off for the previous one
    I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of those "oh, you just need to..." problems with a really simple answer...i hope so anyway!
    Cheers dears!
    Linz

    Thanks guys, i now seem to have a related problem at home. Here i am using CS2 but working on the same document as at work. I have made sure nothing is selected and set my character and paragraph styles to basic, and hey presto, when i create a text box, all is well. However, when i create a table, and i type in a cell, the bullets return! I have just discovered that turning them off in CS2 doesn't seem to be as simple as CS3 - so firstly - how do i do that?! And secondly - any ideas why it is happening but only in tables?!

  • I can't drag to reorder bullets in a build. The different bullets don't move and the "order" menu can't be activated. Any help?

    When I open the Animate bar, and select Delivery by Bullet, then Build Order, it's impossible to change the order in which the bullets appear (it's much easier in Powerpoint). eg. in a series of bullets 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 I may want to display 1 and 3 (as questions) and then only show the answers 2 and 4 after, but still have them show in numerical order. I can't do this with Keyword.
    How can this be resolved?

  • Speed up adding URL hyperlinks to bullets/selected text

    Hi, I'm doing a presentation that requires linking a huge amount of the bullet text to different sites. I was hoping to create some sort of macro that told Keynote to add the URL of the current active window in Safari to the selected text, but Automator can't do it and I don't know of any other way to create a macro (I'm new to the Mac world).
    At the moment, after go to the site I want to link to, switch to Keynote, highlight the desired text and open the Hyperlink inspector window:
    1) Hyperlink inspector window defaults to Slide (vs. Webpage)
    2) After I click Enable Hyperlink and choose Webpage from the pulldown menu, the URL defaults to my home page URL.
    This means I have to go to Safari, highlight and copy the URL, switch back to Keynote, highlight the homepage URL, paste the correct URL (from the active Safari window), click Apple-end to get to the end of the URL and hit Enter in order to hyperlink the selected text.
    I know there has to be an easier way.
    At one point, I accidentally did something that dynamically changed the URL in Hyperlink inspector to the active URL on Safari, but I can't re-create it. That, at least, would be some help.
    Any suggestions for how to simplify/speed up/automate this cumbersome process would be GREATLY APPRECIATED, as I am slogging along using this inefficient approach while trying to meet a looming deadline.
    Thanks in advance!

    Maggie, how desperate are you for a quick solution? One approach might be to edit the Keynote XML text file directly, adding the bullets and hyperlinks as elements in that file rather than through Keynote proper. This approach is relatively straightforward, and it is very fast, but it does involve getting down-and-dirty with the XML, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. It's honestly not that daunting, though, and just involved doing very minor editing to a text file within TextEdit. I don't know if it would work well for your specific needs, and it involves a completely different workflow than working in Keynote directly, but it might be worth a shot. Here's how you would add a list of hyperlinked bullets to a single slide:
    - First, create a single slide with a bulleted list with a single item that has a hyperlink to a website. This will allow you to see what the XML looks like when we open the XML file. Use an unusual word or string of letters for the bullet item to make it easier to find in the XML code. Save this one slide presentation, and close it.
    - In the Finder, hold down the Control key while clicking once on the presentation file. This will bring up the contextual menu. Choose "Show Package Contents". This will open a new Finder window that shows you the "guts" of the Keynote presentation, which is actually a collection of files.
    - Double click on the "index.apxl.gz" file. This is the file that holds the XML markup for the presentation. It is stored in compressed form, but when you double-click it, a new file, "index.apxl", will be created. This is a plain text file, editable with TextEdit, and it is the file you will modify. Delete the "index.apxl.gz" file, as it isn't needed now, and Keynote will automagically re-compress the "index.apxl" file when we open the presentation.
    - Open the "index.apxl" file in TextEdit (or whatever other text editor you like). You will see a mess of XML, without any real formatting. That's OK though, because you only need to edit a small bit of this file, and you will use the unusual word in the bullets you created as a search guide.
    - Find the unusual word in the text. This word is embedded in the XML code that specifies the bullet on the slide. This is the code that you will need to edit.
    The code that specifies a hyperlinked bullet will look something like this:
    <sf:p sf:style="SFWPParagraphStyle-263" sf:list-level="1"><sf:link href="http://www.apple.com/"><sf:span sf:style="SFWPCharacterStyle-38">Test1</sf:span></sf:link><sf:br/></sf:p>
    (The numbers of the "ParagraphStyle" and "CharacterStyle" may be different depending on the theme you used.)
    If you look at this snippet, you can see that there is a URL in the <sf:link> tag -- that's the hyperlink for the bullet text. You can also see that there is some text (in this case, "Test1") wedged between the <sf:span> and </sf:span> tags -- that's the text that appears on the slide, and in your file it will be the unusual text that you searched for in the file.
    Now, the cool thing is that, if you change this URL and this bullet text in the XML file and save it (having previously deleted the "index.apxl.gz" file), you will have changed the bullet text and hyperlink in the actual presentation. The much cooler thing is that you can add bullets to a slide by simply pasting multiple copies of the above code template into the XML file -- just make sure that you copy the entire bullet template (from <sf:p to </sf:p>), and that you paste it directly after another </sf:p> tag. (Be sure to use the template from your XML file, since the ParagraphStyle and CharacterStyle numbers will be different.)
    What this means is that the task that formerly involved going back and forth in the Keynote interface now just involves editing a text file. In the case of your task, for example, what you could do is create a second TextEdit window, paste the bullet code template into it several times, and then just drag and drop the URLs you want into the various address spots of the templates. You can also edit the bullet text directly in the templates. Once you're done, you can simply copy the whole batch of text and paste it into the appropriate spot in the "index.apxl" XML file, and you're done.
    Also, because this is now a text editing task rather than a Keynote task, you can potentially take advantage of applications that automate text editing to generate the bullet XML for you. For example, you could just create a list of the URLs, and then use the macro capabilities of Word, or (my favourite) NisusWriter, to go through the list and populate the addresses in the bullet templates. The possibilities are quite wide open with this approach.
    This is just how to do one slide, but multiple slides are just as straightforward -- simply start by creating a presention where each slide has one bullet point, with unique text in each bullet. Then you can easily find the section of XML code for the bullet of each slide, and edit accordingly.
    This may seem like a hugely involved and roundabout way of doing this task, but it works, and by making it a text editing task, it can make it far easier.

  • Workaround for the Fade/Appear blocky text problem in IE

    Just wanted to share with folks a workaround for the IE
    "blocky text" problem that you see when using Fade effects like the
    one used in this example:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/samples/data_region/DetailRegionEffectsSample.html
    It turns out if you set the 'background' CSS property on the
    element you are fading, that IE properly renders the text. So to
    fix the effects sample above, all you would have to do is modify
    this CSS rule in the file to place a background color on the
    description region to get things to look good in IE:
    #description {
    opacity: 0;
    filter: alpha(opacity=0);
    background: white;
    So if folks have been avoiding the use of effects because it
    makes things look terrible in IE, you now have a workaround.
    --== Kin ==--

    I was using spry's AppearFade effect to transition between
    "slides" in what equates to a viewstack that I created.
    Then I noticed that it would take bold text in IE and make it
    look all smudgy or blurry.
    Well, after working on it for a while, I got to thinking,
    "This problem is specific to text rendered in MicroSofts
    browser"... "Hmmm, I wonder".
    So, I tried using this style rule: [ font-family:"MS Sans
    Serif",Arial, Geneva, sans-serif; ].
    Lo and behold, feed the stupid MS browser an MS font and it
    does not blur the text.
    I just wanted to get this our there. Because someone might
    want to solve this in a way where they don't have to set a
    background color...

    I am trying to make the bullets on my pages red, with the text beside it dark grey. See site at: http://www.lotusvalleydesigns.com/meixnerconstruction/ourservicescommercial.html
    Also, I am not sure that I did the li tags correctly. When I ran the validation locally it said there were problems, please help.
    Thank you.

    Okay, a quick solution is to add <span> tags to your lists like this:
    <ul>
    <li><span>Item 1</span></li>
    <li><span>Item 2</span></li>
    <li><span>Item 3</span></li>
    </ul>
    You can then style your li in red and style your li span in dark gray, like so...
    li { color: red }
    li span { color: darkgray }
    If you have many, many other lists that need creating, there are better ways of doing this.  Let me know if you have any more questions.
