Fade in video but not sound.

Question

Hi,
I downloaded a video and I need to keep the front of the sound whilst fading in the video.
a) I unlinked the video and sound which may or may not have been the right choice.
b) Then I dropped down some black.
c) And then I didn't know how to apply a fade in transition ;-(
d) I know how to select a transition but not how to make it fade or mix in to the first frame that I've selected.
We are at the very beginning of the video.

Michael,
If I read your needs correctly, all you have to do is Keyframe the Opacity (one of the fixed Effects in every Video Clip).
This is done with the Effects Control Panel.
Select your Clip (no need to Unlink media here), and then open Effects Control Panel (NOT the Effects Panel, which is where your Effects & Transitions are accessed).
If the Effects Control Panel's mini-timeline is not showing, click on the >>> in the upper-right.
Position the CTI (Current Time Indicator/Play Head w/ the red edit line) at the first Frame of that Clip
Click on the stopwatch icon in the Opacity row, to toggle ON Keyframing
This will place a Keyframe on the first Frame. Leave it alone for now, but we'll come back to it in a moment
Now, navigate to where you want the that Clip to be seen 100%, and Add Keyframe (little ◄●►, and you want to click on the ●) to add a Keyframe there
Hit the ◄ to go to Previous Keyframe (the one on the first Frame), and adjust the Opacity to 0%.
Your Video Clip will start at black (0% Opacity), and slowly come up to 100% Opacity. You might want to read up on Keyframe Interpolation to "smooth out" the fade.
Note, there are other ways to achieve what you want, from just adding and adjusting a Fade-to-Black Transition, to other forms of animation. This lesson will introduce you to Keyframing, which offers so much power, and can be used in so many ways. Keyframes will soon become your good friends, so using a slightly more involved method here, will help you later.
Along the lines of Jim's suggestions, you should be able to find most/all of the terms that are capitalized above, in the Help files. I strongly suggest looking each one up, and reading about them, as there will so much more, and very useful info contained.
