"Fade to black" transition without handles ?

Is there any method to do a "fade to black" transition without handles in FCP 6 ?
Like in iMovie for example. Maybe with another Pro App?
Many Thanks.

Have the Fade to Black end at the end of the clip, not in the middle. Notice when you drag transitions onto clips how you can make it end on the cut, be in the middle of the cut, or start at the cut.

  • Problems with fade to black transition and photoalbum themed titles

I keep having trouble with the titles in the photo album theme. When I use a fade to black transition and then try to use one of the top 4 titles available under the photos theme it seem like I have to move the title part of the way into the new clip or the fade to black transition just does not happen. It looks OK but the title come up after the new clip has been playing for several seconds and doesn't look as smooth. Any ideas?

One option is to create a "freeze frame" on the first frame of the new clip. Add your Photo Album title to the beginning of the new clip. Insert a fade to black transition between the preceding clip and the freeze frame. You may need to fiddle with the duration of both the freeze frame and the transition in order to get the timing right. Now, as the fade to black finishes you will see a short still segment just prior to the title commencing, as if the freeze frame is coming to life, so to speak. It looks quite effective, depending of course on the video content.
To add a freeze frame, right-click (or Control-click) on the appropriate frame, then select "Add Freeze Frame" from the pop-up menu. It's easier if you first move the thumbnail slider (lower right corner of the Projects window) to the half second mark, giving you a close-up view of your clips.

  • "Fade Through Black" transition in slideshows corrupts project!

I built a project from the ground up in iMovie. Shared this to iDVD. Constructed the whole dvd including a slideshow. When I clicked on "Fade Through Black" in the transitions menu for slideshows, iDVD abruptly quit with no error message! Completely quit.
I tried to open the project by double-clicking it and it would bring up a prompt saying "Loading themes", then show the iDVD window for a split second and quit again.
I tried making the iDVD project twice. With different themes each time, and still got the same result when I clicked on the "Fade Through Black" transistion. I had even saved the file right before clicking the transistion. That didn't help at all...

This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
You'll need to reset some Preferences.

  • Audio cuts off during fade to black transition

After completing my movie, I tried to add a simple fade in at the very beginning and a fade out at the end. The video image fades fine but the audio is off altogether during both transitions.
What's weird is that if I look at the audio track in the precision editor, it looks like it fades in and out perfectly with the video.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Any takers? I'd be very keen to learn how to do this as well.
I have a "fade to black" at the end of my movie but I don't want the audio to fade until the end of the clip.

  • Fade Through Black Transition Not Displaying Properly

Greetings all. I have imported my movie clips into iMovie '08. Each of the clips plays fine by themselves as well as when edited and combined in my project. The problem arrises when I try to add a Fade Through Black (or any transition for that matter) between the clips. Since the transition I'm interested in is the Fade Through Black that's the one I'm going to continue to reference as my transition. When I scrub the cursor across the transition it displays perfectly in the preview window. However, when I try to play the movie it doesn't fade to black it just jumps to black, and doesn't come out of black for several seconds (much longer than my duration). Any suggestions on what to try would be most appreciated. Thank you and have a good night.

  • Add a fade-to-black transition in the slide show

This quickly fades an image to black before quickly fading-in the next image. This avoids double-image effects during image transitions, and still gives a nice smooth fading effect. Double images are particularly distracting when two contiguous images are only slightly different a common situation in photo shoots.

  • How do I add a 5 second black transition?

How do I add 5 seconds of black frame to the beginning of my clip without covering up my video? I was wanting the "fade to black" transition, but wanted the black to last longer. I am using Premiere Elements 12. I thought about taking a picture of some black paper, but there has to be a better way. Thanks!

Why not just fade to black and then add a 3 to 5 second black segment betwen it and your fade in from black?
Black video segments can be created by selecting New Item, under the Panel Options in the upper right of the Media Assets panel.

  • How do I fade to black in a slideshow?

It's been years since I've used Flash, so I'm a bit rusty.
But I am trying to use the slideshow presentation template and do
transitions between the slides, but I'm not getting the results I
    want.
I'm putting in the preset behaviors for fade in and out, and
what I get is a crossfade. What I want is a fade to black, and a
fade up from black (a dip to black), and not a crossfade. Is there
a simple scripting way to do this that I can put on the
presentation (master) slide? If been playing with setInterval to
delay the transition but I can't get it to work. Thanks.

Add a "Fade Through Black" transition after your last clip.
For the volume fade, you can drag the Fade handles.

  • Why can't I use the fade to black and white option in iMovie '11?

I have a project that uses a few photos with one minute duration timers I want to slowly fade from color to black and white but the fade to options are all greyed out... Am I over looking something or doing something wrong?

    Exiled Angel wrote:
....it's the color in the pictures I want to gradually reduce the saturation on until they are black and white before the transitions start, not fade in or out to a black or white screen like you are suggesting.
Sorry, but I wasn't suggesting that you use Fade to Black or Fade to White, just explaining what they do, given that you used the term "fade" in your first post. I assumed you may have been using the Fade to Black transition (which won't achieve what you want).
I suggested that you use Cross Dissolve, but I need to explain further how to achieve the effect you are looking for. First, you need to place a copy of the photo directly after the original. Make sure Ken Burns is turned off - use Fit. Now double-click on the copy to bring up the Clip Inspector. Click on Effects and select Black & White, then click Done. Drag a Cross Dissolve transition between the 2 clips (photos) and adjust the duration to your liking in the Inspector. Now you will see the effect your are looking for.
The key is to have an exact copy of the photo following the original, then change the copy to Black and White (or Sepia or any other effect), then insert the Cross Dissolve (or Cross Blur etc.) transition.
Hope that''s what you are looking for!

  • Easy way to "fade to black" ?

What is the easy or best way to fade out at the end of a clip/scene? Doesn't seem to be that option in the edit drop down list.

Use the Fade Through Black Transition in the Transitions pane.
Put it between two clips to Fade through black. Put it at the beginning or end of your movie to fade in or fade out.

  • Slow fade to black

Hi. I am trying to create a very slow fade to black. Regardless of the amount of time I select for the fade, it just doesn't seem to work. Never had this problem with previous versions of iMovie.  If anyone can help me out, I would be very grateful!
    Nick

To do this, I would use the Fade Throought Black transition.
The way transitions work, they can be no longer than half the length of the shortest clip to either side. (In your case, there would be only the one clip to the side, since the transition is at the end. So let's say your clip is 4 seconds long. You can make the transition up to 2 seconds long.
If you need a longer transition than you have footage for, I would suggest creating a freeze frame at the end of the last clip. Set the freeze frame to be however long you need it to be so you can apply a transition to half its length.

  • Why is it, if i have one video clip in the timeline, i can't just add a transition at the end of that solo clip to fade to black!?! please help!

hey there, so im making a video for a family event..
i drag in an audio clip all of a sudden this becomes the be all and end all, and i want to sync some vid clips to that audio track, so let's say i drag in a 10 second video clip, at the end of the 10 seconds, i want to add a transition to fade to black.. i go to the transition window.. choose the cross dissolve or fade to colour, but it will not allow me to drag it on that video clip.. it always ends up on the audio track. this bloody application is so confusing compared to final cut. please help!

Ahhh, now I see the problem, Grasshopper.  Problem is, we are all Grasshoppers, here.
Yes, that little piece of info is critical. I'd say the biggest difficulty with FCPX is the whole new language.
If I read you correctly, your Audio is in the Main Storyline (Track 1 in plain old Editorese). This makes anything else you add (above or below) a "connected clip", which we can no longer think of as "Track 2" because Jobs sez so. So, yes, you cannot just add a transition to either end of a connected clip.
No argument with Tracy's solution, because I haven't seen any other general solution presented for any attempt to treat connected clips as the main storyline.  And, of course, when they were "track 1" and "track 2", you could.
An alternative solution, however, is to highlight the connected clip and press Ctrl-V to bring up the Video Animation Editor.  Click the "reveal button" for Compositing: Opacity (bottom, right).  Once open, there is a "fade handle" to the right top.  Drag it left for however much fade you wish.  (there is one on the left as well, but you were only talking about a fade-out.)
A second alternative, perhaps for future projects where everything keys on audio, may be to create a Gap clip (used to be called slug) in the primary storyline before ever dropping in the audio.  Then you can add video to the main story line and modify it without having to go thru hoops to do the simplest thing.

  • Fade to Black Without Affecting Audio

This seems like a painfully stupid/simple question but I can't figure out how to fade a clip to black whilst maintaining the same audio level. It seems apply fade to black also fades the audio.

    Hi
In older versions of iMovie - one Extracted Audio - then applied Transition - then fine tuned the audio.
In iMovie'09 and 11 - Extract Audio also works
Apple/File/Edit/Cut ---> Down here to 14:te row - Extract Audio or Separate Audio (iM'11)
    Then apply Transition
Then as the Rubberband function now is restored (in way off) - fine tune the Audio ends.
Not using iM'11 - this is mostly based on Guessing and looking/testing into iM'11.
(in iMovie HD6 and FinalCut this is much more in control)
Yours (Hope it works) Bengt W

  • Stopping the Fade to Black on Ken Burns Slide Show?

I am trying to make a slideshow using the Ken Burns template. I want to be able to make a loop-able file (.mov or other), so I can make a looping DVD. At the end of my sideshow, there is a one second fade to black - Is there any way to stop that fade out or is there another way to do this effect without the fade out?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Fade to black at end of movie

In Garageband, there is a little triangle in the timeline that represents the end of the song. When you render (mix) the song out to a file, it will do it till it gets to that triangle.
Am I correct in saying that I need to add a gap at the end of every project if I want the end of the movie to fade to black and then have a second or two of black before the end of the movie file?
    Thanks!
    Scot

If you add the default dissolve transition at the end (command T with the end selected), it will fade to black. But there won't be any length of black once it is faded. For that you need to add a gap at the end. Option W inserts a default length (3 s I think) of gap at the playhead so make sure the playhead is at the end of your project first.
