Faded Name Labels in Dock Icons

Periodically, the grey background in all of the Dock icons' name labels all but fade, making the names difficult to read. The problem goes away if I reboot, but eventually returns.
Any ideas?

Yep. I think you've got a corrupted system. I'd recommend a reinstall. You might try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • How to remove application name label in dock

Anyone know how to disable the app name labels from the docked apps on a mac? I know there's a way to achieve this by fiddling with plist files in the developer options, but i was hoping there was an easier switch to do this. Juts want to turn it off for all docked apps, or all apps, don't care. Thanks.

Not so fast! After doing what I described and having the empty bar disappear it returned. I've gone through the same routine a few times and the bar returns after a few shut downs aand status of my computer. Any suggestions?

What is the name of the grey bar at the bottom of Firefox, version 33 . It sits at bottom of Firefox screen. It is usually empty, nothing on it.. I can also x it out to delete it. It sits just above the dock icons on my Mac desktop.

  • ICal dock icon & iPhoto event's name issue

Recently I noticed that the date number in the iCal dock icon and the event's title in iPhoto were a few pixel shifted up. How can I solve this?
    Here are two screenshots:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, I see on the iCal icon the 4 is shifted up into the red. It's odd. Try this...
It may be LaunchServices. These are only cache files but can get corrupted.
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and *copy & paste* this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:
    Code:
    <pre class="alt2" style="margin:0px; padding:3px; border:1px inset; width:640px; height:34px; overflow:auto">/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user</pre>
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Update Dock Icon / Delete Dock Icon

I've written a small utility that changes some system settings. The utilities icon is changed to reflect the state of the system settings. I'm going crazy trying to get the dock icon to reflect the updated application icon. Is there a simple way to force the dock to refresh? I've found an applescript to add an icon and it adds a new icon (and the proper icon) but the original is also in the dock. I need a way to delete an icon, I guess. I can't find anything on the inter-webs on how to do this and all my attempts to delete an icon have failed. Can anybody out there help me with this. Thanks...

Unfortunately, I don't know of any simple way to refresh the Dock, although such a way most likely exists.
However, if you don't mind using [GUI Scripting|http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/uiscripting/index.html], the two scripts below should do approximately what you are asking for. Just replace "Stickies" (given here as an example) with the name of any other application. (You must also have enabled the Accessibility Frameworks by clicking the checkbox labeled "Enable access for assistive devices" in the Universal Access System Preference pane.)
To remove the icon from the Dock:
    *tell application "Stickies" to quit*
*delay 0.5* -- adjust if necessary
*tell application "System Events" to tell UI element "Stickies" of list 1 of process "Dock"*
    *if not (exists) then return*
    *perform action "AXShowMenu"*
*click menu item "Options" of menu 1*
*click menu item "Remove from Dock" of menu 1 of menu item "Options" of menu 1*
    *end tell*
To add the icon to the Dock:
    *tell application "Stickies" to launch*
*tell application "System Events" to tell UI element "Stickies" of list 1 of process "Dock"*
    *perform action "AXShowMenu"*
*click menu item "Options" of menu 1*
*tell menu item "Keep in Dock" of menu 1 of menu item "Options" of menu 1*
*if not (value of attribute "AXMenuItemMarkChar" exists) then*
    click
    else
    *key code 53* -- escape
    *end if*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
    Hope it can help.

  • Is there a way to open a new tab/window by clicking the Safari dock icon?

Is there a way to open a new tab or window by clicking the Safari dock icon? Right now, the default behavior seems to be that Safari simply un-minimizes or displays the last window in focus.
I want to be able to quickly fire up a new tab or window in Safari when it is out of focus, such as when Finder is in focus. The workaround right now is to right-click on the Safari dock icon, and select "New Window", or to allow the last window in focus to appear, and cmd+t or cmd+n. But this is too many steps over the course of a day for a highly frequented task like this.

I'm glad that helped. Thanks for posting back.
... when I save this as an application as "run only", it's relatively quick to run, but there's a delay to load... I assume it's opening Script Editor every time?
As long as the script is saved as an application -- Run Only or not -- it should definitely not cause the Script Editor to open. You can verify this by closing the Script Editor application altogether prior to clicking on the docked script icon that you saved. You should notice that the Script Editor does not open when the script is run.
FWIW, I went back and saved a version of the script as a Run Only app, and I didn't notice any difference between it and the original, which was saved without the Run Only option checked. The delay that you're noticing might be accounted for by the fact that the script, because it was saved as an application, will be activated just as any other standalone application would be. This happens prior to Safari being activated. Watch your menu bar when clicking on the docked script icon and you should see the name of the saved script app appear for a split second before Safari gets activated.
The only time I can think of that you might wish to save the script as a Run Only application would be if you wanted to conceal the script for some reason. If, for example you were publishing the script as a part of an application release and didn't want its contents known, or you didn't want an end user to be able to edit the script, you might select the Save As > Run Only option. To illustrate this, try dragging and dropping a script saved as a Run Only application onto the Script Editor's icon. You should see a warning dialog to this effect:
*Unable to read the file because the script is not editable (it was saved as run-only).*
Whereas if you drag a script that was not saved as a Run Only app onto the Script Editor's icon, the script should open in the Editor, and it can be edited.
I played around with the "stay open" option for saving the script as an application, but it appears I have to close the app and reopen it before I can get it to work a second time.
The Stay Open option is appropriate for scripts which use an "On Idle" handler, which really wouldn't apply in this case. Check out more on Idle Handlers here and here.
Is there a faster way to use this multiple times throughout the day?
One way you might speed up the action would be to save the script +as a script+ by choosing Save As > File Format: script from the Script Editor's File menu. The resulting script can then be activated by assigning a hot key to it using one of several 3rd-party keyboard shortcut programs available on the Internet. (I used Spark, assigned a function key to the script I posted earlier, and found the action to run significantly faster.)
    Good luck.

  • Can't stop the dock icon bouncing when there is an "alert" from Thunderbird

I posted this question on the MozillaZine forum, but no-one there answered so I thought I'd try here.
I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 for my email. Is there a way to stop the dock icon bouncing when there is an "alert"? These happen relatively frequently in connection with my Yahoo account, and every time the icon bounces until I go to Thunderbird and click "ok" on the alert box. This is slowly driving me nuts. I have disabled the "animate dock icon" setting for new mail, and for my whole system when programs start or open, but it hasn't had any effect on the behaviour of the icon with regards to alerts.
    Thanks.
    C

Sorry, I am not trying to be difficult. I'm just lost.
Hey, no problem, really... we're here trying to help & just need to find out what is needed to help!
You really should right click on the whole Thubderbird folder and Archive it first, so we can go back if need be.
Then, it appears that if you just recreate the account, with the name, email, server, and smtp, then everything comes back for that account... at least for global accounts.
If you wish to hold off on this then just move the original .js back and start T-Bird again, then I can search for a way to edit the existing .js file, because for some reason, when you change your prefs back, it's not changing that file like it should.

  • Updated apps break links with dock icons (Mac OS)

When apps are updated via the CC desktop app, they sometimes (not always) come down with a new name which causes the link in the dock to break.
This would be a nuisance with one or two apps, but when a CC user has (like I do) a dozen icons in their dock it means that every major update requires several broken dock icons to be replaced. And if (like me) the user has more than one login on their machine (for separate personal and business workspaces) then the nuisance is doubled.
For example, I have just downloaded "Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014.1", which has removed the earlier version leaving an orphaned dock icon ("Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014"), for the sake of adding ".1" to the file name.
As a general principle, version numbers do not belong in an application name; there is a perfectly good field in the file info window for version number which is where practically every other vendor puts theirs.
This comes on top of the muddle of versions which has meant there are three "current" versions of some apps, for instance Photoshop (CS6, CC and CC 2014).
The other problem with your system is that in a few short months "CC 2014" apps will be outdated, if not in practise, certainly in name.
Some creative brains need to be exercised on this, don’t leave it to the nerds.

If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Mobile 3.1 can't find bundle for base name labels

    Hi all.
I installed the Business Objects Mobile 3.1 few days ago on a dedicated server without using proxy server because the installation is in test mode with no external access. Both products (BO Enterprise XI3.1 & BO Mobile 3.1) are installed on separate Windows Server 2003 machines. The installation has the default database (Apache Derby) and both services (VAS & VMS) are working. The mobile device is a virtual device on my PC using Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system.
The client application has been installed on mobile device and users can succesfully log on to the CMS using Enterpise Authentication method. After this two folder icons are displayed on screen, first for Local Documents and second for Server Documents. Clicking the Server Documents the following error message is displayed on screen "Can't find bundle for base name labels, locale el_GR (0x15)"
I tried to resolve the problem changing the regional settings from Greek to US in servers, my PC and Virtual Device but the exact error still appears. Does anybody knows what to do or where to look for a solution?
Thanks for reading my message. Happy and creative new year for all.

    Here is my suggestion.
Do you have the property file named "webui-resources_en_US.properties"?
    Here is the example
    language="en"
    country="US"
    locale = new Locale(language, country);
    bundle = ResourceBundle.getBundle("com.<companyname>.webui-resources");
copy the webui-resources_en_US.properties file to the directory
com.<companyname> in your workspace/IDE/localdirectory. or ftp that file to classes/com/companyname directory
This should work. I am using it that way.

  • Dock icons disappear when quitting apps

This is a brand new 1.9 GHz 17" iMac G5 with iSight built-in.
Software is up to date with OS 10.4.3 and all patches.
While working with the owner today, I quit Safari, and watched the Safari icon disappear from the dock. No smoke no nothing--when the App closed, the icon vanished.
Then I tried to demo iChat--and had the same experience.
It isn't a problem to drag the apps back to the Dock, but it shouldn't have to be done.
I finally wound up launching/quitting all Apps - all finally behaved properly, at least today.
Ideas on what's happening and how to prevent?

Ohairy, I'd guess that it was a corrupt plist. ~/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how the Dock icons work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
If the Dock icons function normally in the new user, I'd delete the plist and rebuild the Dock icons.
If other "odd" issues begin to show up it may indicate hardware problems with added ram, cpu or hard disk. Run Disk Repair & AHT (Apple Hardware Test).

  • Dock icons

I have system 10.4.10 on my intel iMac. Before 10.4.10, the dock icons appeared OK. Now few of the dock icons turned into a question mark. When I move the mouse pointer to the question mark icon, I can see the application name and it launches fine. If I drag the question mark icon off the dock, and replace it with the appropriate application, it works a few day then the application icon is replaced with a question mark icon again.
Any idea why it happened like that? It did not happen with the OS X 10.4.7.

Hi trangle, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The question mark on an icon generally means it has lost its association with the application. But it seems this is not the case with your icons because you can continue to launch your apps from them.
My best guess would be that is some corruption in your Dock preferences. Go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and trash that file. Then log out and back in or restart. YOu'll have to reset your Dock the way you like it.

  • Dock Icons become QUESTION MARKS

i have DOCK ICONS that i have told to stay in the dock (this is how i start the programs) and every two weeks or so one or another one of these suddenly shows up as a BIG QUESTION MARK.
i asked this once before and someone said i should just drag the icon off and start the program again and make sure to tell it to stay in the dock.
but this is a major pain and makes it seem like there is something wrong with the OS not to mention it is really annoying to have to constantly re-organized my desktop.
does anyone know WHY this may happen and if so HOW to keep it from happening?
i mean, is there a PATH that gets linked to this icon and moving this data will somehow create the question mark? some other explanation?
    TIA for any help.

hi kappy. again a BIG THANK YOU for helping me on this.
these are good points but there is definitely a different set of aspects to working on a mac with respect to the workflows regarding app install but i am not technically knowledgeable enough to tell you why this is so. i can just say that it is very confusing and it could use some cleaning up. just the fact that i have to post this question is an indication of this IMHO.
also, at the same time one simply has to look at all the Application folders on the mac and the various ways they are accessed or pointed to. when you say something like you just have to (manually) put the app file in the applications folder these things are all over the place.
i have an "Applications" folder under my Home folder that has two folders and one application that has installed themselves there. then i have a Dock icon that says Applications that has a list of programs, and then i have a desktop shortcut that has a list of items. if i ask myself the reasonable question of - well - HOW do i drag and drop the .app file into the Applications folder like i am supposed to, or WHERE is the Applications folder that shows all the items in my desktop shortcut or in the dock icon - - reasonable (and reasonably intelligent) people might be completely stumped.
now i /know/ that this "other" Applications folder is actually listed under my HARD DRIVE icon and not my home folder because if i double click on the desktop icon or if i open the dock icon in finder i can see that this is the case. however, this means that we are talking about something that is HIDDEN from the user on the mac OS. so for me to MANUALLY add a . app file to the Applications folder i somehow have to - well - presumably i have to make the leap of faith that when i add this file to my DESKTOP ICON i am adding it to the correct (hidden) folder and not to the one that i can see plain as day in my Home Folder but which appears to contain next to nothing.
I mean, i am manually adding an app to a desktop icon that has the same name as another folder so that it arrives in a hidden folder with the same name. this is ridiculous. this is just dumb and probably goes a long way toward adding to the confusion. the fact that the Home Folder level Application folder is the one that is visible is even dumber.
again, a set of prompts upon program installation might be a Mac OS level need and not something that should devolve down to the developers who probably have enough on their hands trying to keep up with changes in the from OS to OS.
as a concrete example on this thread - the answer my issue is that either there is no .app file in the /hidden/ Applications folder for the dock icon to continue to reference or that the ICON was added to the dock while the .app file was somewhere and now it is no longer seeing this .app file where it originally saw it.
    A slightly off-topic BTW:
do you know why I have one app file in particular that i see in the Home Folder Level Applications folder?  this is a reasonably sophisticated company ostensibly they think this is a better place for the App and /they/ did this from what i can tell instead of me accidentally screwing this up because i was sleepy or distracted and not thinking about the Escheresque aspects of installing these .app files presumably? i mean, this in itself is confusing since I DO see this app icon in the dock and I DO see this app in this folder (all by its lonesome basically) but i DON'T see this app listed in my DOCK ICON list of Apps (or in my desktop shortcut list of apps) which from my perspective would/should basically cause a normal human being to think that the app is not installed...

  • Change dock icon.

    Hello ,
How can i change default dock icon of my carbon application to my choice.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Sunil Adhayaru.

X11 has a menu named "Applications" in the menu bar. In there is an option to "Customize Menu…".
In the window that appears, you can edit any of the commands just by double-clicking on the name, command, or shortcut.
This will change what appears in the "Applications" menu, both in the menu bar for X11 and in the Dock menu for X11.

  • Failure to shut down & missing dock icons

    2013 MBP & Yosemite 10.10.1
My MBP is regularly displaying the message "Safari (example) quit because of a problem" AND "your computer shut down because of a problem". The computer often becomes unresponsive following either of these messages. If I try and restart / shut down (depending on circumstances), the computer's screen darkens and continues to show the cursor, and the keyboard remains illuminated, but nothing else happens. I have to shut it down using the power on / off key. When I start it back up again, most of the dock icons are missing, although mousing along the dock shows the application names and the apps themselves are accessible from the dock.
    Help appreciated!
