Fader movements not "recorded"

Question

Sorry for the dumb question, but I've been struggling with this for two days. I'm working with several test projects in the latest version of Logic Pro X and when I set the channels to Touch, Latch, or Write, sometimes their movements get "recorded" and sometimes they don't.  This is project by project, not within one project.
I've done it before several times with earlier version of Logic and some projects (especially sample projects from tutorials) work fine: as a I play the tracks and move the volume faders, the fades are set and when I then play back, they fade up and down as needed. But other projects just won't work in this way; no matter whether I set it to Touch, Latch or even Write, none of the fader movements play back, even if I change the to Read. This applies to soundtracks I import (via XML) from FCP X or new test projects into which I import various audio files. It also makes no difference if I am using the software faders in Logic or the hardware ones one on the Zoom R-16 I'm using — in some projects it works, in other projects, it just doesn't work.
What am I doing wrong?

Are you having problems writing new automation and/or playing back existing Automation.
Problem playing back Automation:
In that case, do you see the the Control Points and the Automation Curve on the Track Lane?
Do you see the Automation data in the Automation Event List (open with the Key Command control+command+E)
When you import a FCPx project with Volume Animation via the Final Cut Pro XML file, the Key Frames should be imported . Do they show up in Logic and do they play back?
Problem with recording Automation:
When you have a Track with no Automation yet and you move, for example, the Volume Fader, do you see the Automation Curve (single Automation Control Point with single line), moving up and down?
Just want to double check that you know the difference between the two Automation Buttons. the bigger one on the Tracks Window's Menu Bar just shows/hides the Automation and the smaller Automation Button on the Track Header, enable/disable the Track Automation on that specific Track.
