Fading annotations in Preview 5.5.1

I use Preview to read pdf files for my study, and use the annotations because they are great and versatile. But I just noticed that some old ones have started to fade! Since I'm not interessted in them disappearing before the exam, how can I stop them from fading/changing color? Will they ever fade to the point where I can't read them anymore?
I'm running Lion (10.7.3) and Preview (5.5.1)

This has been reported before as a bug; there's a workaround here, but you'll have to roll up your sleeves a bit.

BTW, I stopped using Preview when Lion came out. A simpler solution if you're only using for pdfs is to use the free SKIM pdf viewer:

Problems with annotating in preview

hi,
i've had no issues using the annotate function for preview prior to my snow leopard upgrade. the most important function for me was the highlight text function for use in lectures. however, after upgrading, the text i highlight often highlights in "circles" or "ribbon-like shapes" if its a huge chunk of text. i've uploaded some pictures in case you guys don't quite understand what i mean.
it would be perfect if there's any way i can revert back to the older version of annotating for preview. ):

So, a week later, and I think I'm narrowing in on the problem. WARNING: long post follows:
When I bought the new Macbook Pro, I bought an SSD after market to install in the optibay. Once it was installed, I reinstalled Mountain Lion on the SSD and obliterated the original hard drive. I then moved my Home folder from the SSD to the traditional hard drive using instructions found many places on the 'net. (CNET is one source, but there are many others.) Essentially, I created a dummy Admin acount and used it to copy the data from the SSD to the traditional hard drive, then changed the Home folder in System Preferences. Worked like a charm, no errors. Or so I thought.
I kept the dummy Admin account on the SSD for general troubleshooting, so last night I tried logging in with that account and working in Preview to do what I was trying before... and it worked just fine. Menus popped up super quick, the Export and Save As functions returned the appropriate menus... in short, perfect operation. But this doesn't work properly on my regular user account, whose Home directory was moved.
I didn't use system links because most articles said this was unnecesary under Lion or Mountain Lion. But it does seem like something is not working correctly, as these menus will not pull up on the account with the moved home folder.
Any ideas?

Search PDF annotations in Preview?

How can you search your PDF annotations in Preview? There seem to be no options in the Search bar in Preview. I know you can browse highlighting and annotations via the Sidebar, but you can't search the annotations?
/edit: it seems that Adobe Reader can search these annotations - select Search (CmdShiftF), then check "Include Comments").
Can anyone enlighten me on the state of annotation search with Preview and confirm that it is missing?

I will confirm that it seems to be missing - it does seem that the search bar on the right only searches the text of the PDF and not the annotations. Strange...
Thanks for the tip about Adobe Reader, I will have to check that out! One of the reasons I chose to use annotations was that I have a textbook that has been scanned as picture, not OCR, and I can't search in the text, so I figured the annotations would help me locate topics later. Hopefully I will be able to use Adobe Reader for this.

Problems Editing Previous Annotations with Preview

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem with Preview and/or has any advice on how to fix it.
Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've been having problems whenever I try to edit any of my text annotations in Preview. All of my notes for school are given as PDFs, so I have always used Preview and the textbox function to take notes during lecture. Before I upgraded, if I opened a previously-annotated document to study from and wanted to change something or add to the text, I would simply double-click the textbox and be able to fix it in 1 second.
Unfortunately, trying to make any changes to annotations has become a major process ever since switching to Mountain Lion.
Basically, as soon as I double-click any textbox to edit something I wrote at an earlier time, the box will shrink up to a single line that goes off the page and into oblivion. I have to resize the textbox over and over again just to fit it back on the page, which can be time-consuming and frustrating when paragraphs of text are suddenly condensed to one line that extends ten miles beyond the margins. It happens both with older documents from Lion and with the new documents I've only downloaded and annotated since upgrading to Mountain Lion. I thought maybe it was just my computer, but I tried it on a friend's Mac with Mountain Lion and had the same problem.
I have only used Preview for everything, so all of my annotations have been made using the same program. Also, it gives me no trouble if I try to edit as long as the document remains open; it only happens after I close out of a document and open it up again at a later time (even if it's immediately after closing it). Unfortunately, I can't keep 200+ documents open on the chance I might need to edit them at some point.
If anyone has any clue how I can stop this from happening in Preview or has a suggestion for another good PDF editor (aside from anything Adobe preferably), I would really appreciate it!!

This is happening to me too! It's so frustrating especially since I've come to love Preview before upgrading to mountain lion. At first glace it seemed Preview had become more userfriendly with the textbox, line and circle drawers all separate icons now but the textboxes are such a pain. I know it only takes an extra 5 seconds or so, but by the time you add all the 5 seconds' up, it's heaps of time. It's especially hard if I'm listening to a lecture and I have to stop and fix my textboxes while the lecturer is still talking.
Sorry this isn't much of a solution, but I hope you don't feel alone dealing with this flaw!

Removing Annotations in Preview?

Was playing with annotations in Preview. I drew a rectangle on an image.
I closed the image and later reopened it because I needed to use it. The rectangle was still there. I forgot you don't have to save anymore.
So, I'm trying to get rid of the rectangle and for the life of me I cannot find anything in Preview that will allow me to select it and delete it. I hardly ever used them, but I thought annotations were kind of like a layer in Photoshop or individual objects that could be later removed or modified. Is it possible to get rid of them?

We can do the following:
1. First click on the ``select tool", either from the menu Tools>Select tool, or from the tool bar below the menu bar. Then the cursor changes to a cross ``+".
2. Move the cursor to the annotation you want to delete and click so that it is selected. Note that for rectanges and circles, it is necessary to click on the lines or cirves.
3. Then delete them by hitting the `delete' key or by choosing menu Edit>Delete.
Done!

Yosemite crippled PDF text annotation with Preview.

In previous versions of preview, you used to be able to select 'textbox' markup tool and one-click create textboxes wherever you want on a pdf. Now, with the new Yosemite, selecting 'text' markup tool creating a textbox in the middle of the screen, not where-ever you click. This cripples the productivity of annotating lecture slides during a lecture. I don't want my text box to always appear right in the middle of the page- I want to click to place it.
Also, why is it vertically center justified- who, EVER, used vertically center justified text rather than vertically top justified text?
Are there anyways around this?

Adding text annotation in Preview.app

Preview in Leopard seems to be missing the ability to add text annotation to a pdf like in Tiger. Yeah, I know annotations can appear to the left side of the pdf, but I want them right on the document.
Anybody see how to add text directly to a pdf with Preview in Leopard?

Yes Preview is really messed up. I can't find anyway to print a copy of my pdf WITH annotations showing up. And the bookmark implementation is absolutely nuts.
In Acrobat you can bookmark pages in a document so that you can later
easily find your way around a very large document. In Preview, it
appears that they have added this feature but it works very
differently. The bookmarks are more akin to bookmarks in Safari.
They exist outside of the pdf and they stay in your bookmarks menu
even when another document is open. This is. . . really odd. As yet
I have not found a way to tell Preview to just show me the bookmarks
for the open document. After you have added 10 or 20 bookmarks to 2
or more documents, the bookmarks menu quickly becomes useless. Also,
b/c the bookmarks are not stored inside the .pdf, they do not transfer
to Acrobat if you mail the document to someone else.
Whoever worked on this project did not see to know much about .pdf documents or how they are used in the real world.

Printing PDF annotations in Preview

I'm not sure exactly where this question should go, but it is a printing problem...
I'm trying out Preview's annotation feature, and it's pretty nice, and looks great on the screen. But what if I want to print out the notes and annotations I've made? When I print, I see the little word-bubble marks, and highlighted text works fine -- but the comments themselves, which appear outside the margins onscreen, don't print. I also can't find any way to print them, even on a separate page.
Anybody know?

Hi Mike, I had the same problem, and it doesn't appear to be possible with Preview yet.
However, it was possible using Adobe Professional 8 (CS3), clicking on the "comments" button at bottom left in that app, brought up several options including printing comments. This doesn't even appear to be listed in their Help Viewer.
I don't have Adobe Reader so I can't say if this feature is included in that (free) app.

Pdf Annotations in Preview

I am struggling to believe that it's not possible to search annotations inserted into a pdf with Apple's preview. The annotations (text box) are not found via spotlight nor via the search in Preview. Am I doing something wrong or is this a major shortcoming?

No one here can tell you what plans Apple have for anything. Even if they knew they would be excluded from saying by NDAs and so on.

How to Format Annotations in Preview?

Hi,
First of all, if there's a better region of the discussion fora to post this question, please let me know and I'll re-post.
I started using Preview.app's annotation tools after I found out that the font format can be adjusted simply pressing Cmnd-T while inside the text-annotation drawn-in frame. Adjusting the font size is great for making marginal notes on collaborative PDFs.
But, how do I change the paragraph-format parameters?
In particular, how do I make the annotation text left-justified?
(It always comes out line-centered within the drawn-in frame.)

Using .pdf files with annotations from "preview" on Ipad

I am a medical student have been using preview on my MacBook to take notes on pdf file presentations for several years. I am looking to getting an ipad and want to be able to transfer all these .pdf files over to be able to access on the iPad. Is there an application that will preserve my annotations so they show up in the pdf file when viewed on the ipad?

Maximum annotations in preview?

I was annotating a 150-pg document in preview, the first large one I've ever done, and the first where more than a small handful of entries were made.
Somewhere around page 70, I discovered I could no longer copy and paste the shaded oval I was using as a "see errata" marker
I could create a new one - if preview had not already hung up after trying to duplicate an existing one - but could not copy and paste.
For grins, I went to a new document, and could copy and paste more than 30 times before it too simply stopped.
Help?
I'm willing to pay, but the two other annotation tools I've seen that are NOT acrobat (PDF pen, forex) do not have all of their annotations and text blocks show up in preview and reader/acrobat.

PNG-8 images appear faded on Finder/Preview

Ever since I updated OSX to Mavericks, PNG-8 images show up faded on Finder and Preview.
If I open them on Photoshop CS6 (the program that I used to create them, or if I paste them in a TextEdit file, they show up fine. They also show correctly if on a webpage, on all browsers.
PNG-24 doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem.
Any idea on what might be causing this and if it is "correctable"?

I have the exact same issue all with my PNG-8 exported from Photoshop CS6... The images appear to have a +50% luminosity layer when displayed in Preview.app or in the Finder.
The problem doesn't show when exporting in JPEG or PNG-24 formats.

Removing all annotations in preview for sharing

hi there,
i have some pdfs i've annotated, but now i want to share them without those annotations. is there a way to remove or hide those annotations? it would just be too cumbersome if i'll have to remove them one by one, and i wouldn't want to have to make a duplicate every time i want to annotate a pdf later (one copy for annotating and the other as an original). so i'd really like to just annotate an original with the option to remove those annotations if i want to share the file later on.

To anyone who is still looking at this thread, I have tried everything suggested within to delete annotations in some jpegs (tried saving them as pdf to try in that format), but nothing shows up in Annotations Inspector/Mountain Lion. Keep getting "no annotation selected." No idea how to select the annotations to get them to show, if they don't show up automatically with the Annotations Inspector.
Here is a small example of some annotations I would like to remove. Tried showing them in Sidebar, but everything there is greyed out. And nothing shows in highlights and notes either. I really must remove these. Any further ideas very much welcome.
