Fail to backup iphone

my ios is 4.1, iphone.
My Windows PC was down and I purchased new PC with new installed iTunes.
fail to upgrade to the latest ios via iTune now
fail to backup iphone at iTune

I figured it out.
I didn't have Apps in iTunes at all.
I needed to move apps from phone to iTunes which I finally figured out.
Once I did that I was able to sync the apps to new phone.
instructions on doing this via this chat need to be clearer.
I'm not an Apple super user and I didn't know I needed to move the apps. I thought hitting sync would work. That only works to move apps from iTunes to device.  At least that's the way it seems.

My 3gs wont restore after ios 5 update. I have tried firmware restore and restore from backup, neither works. All I get is "iphone restore failed because backup session failed" Any ideas on how to make a successful restore with this ios 5 update?

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed.  After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work.  I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder.  Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore.  Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.

  • Backup iphone failed

Unable to backup iphone.  Incomplete transfer of purchased items.  Operations stall in both procedures.  Have new iphone to transfer all data to.

Go to itunes/settings/devices and see if there are any old backups left. If yes, delete them.
Did you try a manual backup by right clicking on the phone in the device list in itunes and choosing back up?

  • ITunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected windows 7

I have been backing up and syncing my iPhone 4s through Windows 7 for the past 2 years.  I am running iOS 8.1 on the iPhone and recently downloaded iTunes version 12.0.1.26.  I can no longer sync my contacts or backup the phone and get the following error:
iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected
I have tried plugging directly into the laptop, not the Sony laptop hub
I have deleted all previous backups on the laptop
I have restored the the iPhone
I previously spent hours with Apple Support because the iPhone would not sync with the previous version of iTunes.
    HELP!

    I may have a work around/solution.
I had this problem when on iOS 8 beta 5. Now again on 8.1. I have found a repeatable fix, however it does require part of a working backup of your device. Not sure if it works with any device of the same type, but it does with the part from your own. Anyway:
Locate your current backup within Finder/windows explorer.
Go into the device backup folder (will be titled the UDID of your device) and cut the info.plist, manifest.mbdb, manifest.plist and status.plist files, and paste them somewhere else for storage just in case.
Now you need those same 4 files from a working backup of your device. Paste them into the backup folder where you just removed the others from.
    Restart your computer and device.
Plug in and try backup. You'll notice the date of last backup on the summary page will say the date of the backup in which you took the 4 files, as this info must be in one of the files.
Often this allows a backup to complete successfully for me.
Unsure if all steps are required (such as restarts, and if all 4 files are needed or just one is the key), but it seems to work reasonably frequently like this when having this problem.
I have kept a working copy of those files for use whenever this happens.
I also keep a backup on another computer/hard drive in case this ever fails.
Sometimes this isn't necessary, and you can just change the name of the current failing backup folder so that it creates a whole new one, but often this fails for me still. Also you may need lots of extra space available if you have large backups.
    Hope this helps someone

The following entry may indicate a failing harddrive, so doing backups and replacing the harddrive may be in order.

A little bit about drive S.M.A.R.T. status:
"The most basic information that SMART provides is the SMART status. It provides only two values: "threshold not exceeded" and "threshold exceeded". Often these are represented as "drive OK" or "drive fail" respectively. A "threshold exceeded" value is intended to indicate that there is a relatively high probability that the drive will not be able to honor its specification in the future: that is, the drive is "about to fail". The predicted failure may be catastrophic or may be something as subtle as the inability to write to certain sectors, or perhaps slower performance than the manufacturer's declared minimum."

I changed my pass code and couldn't remember the new pass code. After several failed attempts, my iPhone has been disabled. What do I do?

If you forgot (or don't know) your passcode, restore the device from backup on the last computer it was synced with when the passcode was turned on... this will remove the passcode. If you do not have access to the last computer it was synced with, you will have to force it into recovery mode & restore as a new device.

  • Cannot backup iPhone 3GS. Error Message: iTunes could not backup iPhone because iPhone Disconnected. What is the fix for this problem?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find a solution to my problem.
When a backup is attempted, it starts off as if it's working, then stops and the following error message appears: "iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected". But, the iPhone doesn't really disconnect! It must be some type of internal glitch.
The iPhone is a 3GS and I have mostly pictures and contacts, two songs, a total of 33 apps. The iOS is updated (6.1.6). I do not know if this phone was ever jailbroke. I have been able to backup this phone before, but cannot now. The last backup was 9/21/13, it is now 3/2/14.
Sorry if there is too much info, or not the correct info to find a solution!
Also, I must say that although I am not a tekkie, I've seen many different types of various programs and I find that iTunes is not very intuitive...don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, just my humble opinion.
    Thank You,
    Camp917

    Hey Lawrence,
A big THANK YOU!! to you! Your suggestions worked!
Before I changed USB ports (more on that in a sec...), I employed one of your suggestions that you gave to someone else with the same problem...and that was to clean the connector on the bottom of the phone with a soft dry tooth brush. I couldn't believe the amount of lint that came out! Especially what was found in either end...had to do some very careful picking. (Almost enough lint to knit a small sweater!!)
Changing the USB port was the second and final step required for a successful backup. My computer is a laptop, and I did have a USB Bluetooth adapter (for another device) installed. I removed  the adapter, plugged the iPhone into that USB port, crossed my fingers...and it worked!!!
Now if I can figure out the rest of this darn program, I might upgrade to a new iPhone!
Again, thank you very much Lawrence!

  • Time Machine fails to backup home space.

    Summary:
I've been having problems with Time Machine since I enabled it. For some reason it refuses to backup any file in my account (/Users/ritchiem/). I have spoken with the an Apple 'Genius' and they were dumb founded. So I ask here in the hope that someone has had this issue occur and know what the cause is and how to fix it. I'm not really looking for work-arounds, though I will cover that later.
    *Problem Description:*
A new 500GB external drive was erased and formatted HFS+ Journaled.
TimeMachine was then opened and enabled on this drive.
Back Up Now was selected and left to run assuming it would take a while on the 500Gb internal drive that had a around 200Gi-250Gi of used.
    It ran successfully.
When entering TimeMachine, history shows the top level drive and navigating down the Users folder shows only my 'test' user account. My user account 'ritchiem' is not listed.
There was no error presented from Time Machine an the System Preferences panel reported it was successful.
Console.logs shows that backup was performed successfully.
Steps already taken to address issue:
I have verified/repaired permissions on my boot drive, a few files were changed but none in /Users/ritchiem
I have deleted the Time Machine preferences: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I have tried a second external hard drive, in this case it was more interesting:
It was reported as being to small to perform the backup. So I added some exclusions such as my large iTunes library.
This allowed the Time Machine to proceed but again there was no backup performed of any file in home space.
This is where I thought I must be doing something wrong and went to the Apple Store the genius tried all the usual suspects, permissions, preferences. But no success.
It was only then that one of his colleagues picked up on discussion that it was only my user that was being skipped and suggested the risky move of renaming my user. He showed me the 'Advanced' panel in the Account System Preferences. (I never realised you could use a nice gui to do the renaming of a user in all the right Apple places.)
So I swapped users and renamed my account, and moved my home space to a new user name. mv /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin
I then logged back in to my account to verify the rename all worked and it had.
    _*Time Machine now worked!*_
HOWEVER, that is a total hack. I use the username 'ritchiem' all across my local network and it was not recommended to have a user ritchiem but a home space in /Users/martin.
I renamed my account back to 'ritchiem' and Time Machine again is blocking backups of /Users/ritchiem
Somewhere on my drive there MUST be an exclusion that is preventing the first user that I created on my 2008 MacBook from being backed up. So far my grep-ing of the filesystem for 'ritchiem' has not shown any likely suspects. If anyone here knows where the mystic plist/file is that I need to zap then that would be great.
If of course you have another work-around that does not require me to rename either my account or my home space then that would be great.
Oh and I also tried to trick TimeMachine by creating a symbolic link in /Users to my home space (ln -s /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin). It resolves the link and refuses to backup the contents of my home space just as before.
Please remember here that in all backups that Time Machine performed there was no error, console.log and the UI all report success.
Now if I had a new blank machine and some time I could test out the theory that it is always the first user of a freshly installed machine. However, if other people have it working then it is perhaps not that simple.
    TIA
    Martin

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions. Apologies for the delay I had difficulty locating my original install DVDs.
    Summary
I have performed all the steps and checked items as requested however backups are still not including my home space (/Users/ritchiem)
What I do find interesting is the output of the TimeMachine backup log (at the very end of this VERY long post) which states that 84.8 GB should be backed up but only 24.3 GB is actually backed up.
Would love to know why TM decided 60.5GB of data should not be backed up but not explained in any of the log files and a successful backup reported.
Before I go on to the details of what i've done, I should also mention in case it is important that I have of course been logged in with my user (ritchiem) whilst performing all of these backups. I assume that is normal and that you shouldn't have to log out for TM to actually backup your data. To verify this previously I have logged out user ritchiem and logged in as a test account. The path /Users/ritchiem still failed to backup. I have not tried this recently, however, I would be really surprised if you had to log out of your user account for the data to be backed up.
    Detail
So to answer V.K. first: My drive did indeed have some items that it said I should repair. Hence the search for the install DVDs. I ran the Disk Utility from the Leopard installer and it repaired the drive. The verify now runs green.
As I had just rebooted the machine and it was all fresh I repeated Pondini's previous steps as well.
    * Disabled TM
    * Exited System Preferences
    * Deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I then also deleted the Backups.backupdb from my external drive so everything was fresh and new. I would have just formatted it (which would have been waaay faster, but I have some copies as backups on there for now.)
I started the TM prefs panel and added a few items to the disabled list to a) speed up the backup but also b) I have a 320g internal drive and only a 250g external. My total disk usage is 288 which won't fit, especially with the breathing space TM likes to have.
Here is the data from console.log from the first two backup runs:

    *Other Steps*
Whilst running TM I also setup dtrace to log every file open: (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071031121823710)
Looking for any files in my home space that it might have opened returned none:
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/ritchiem" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l

Yet looking for all the files backed up from the /Users directory there were 458!
    ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
    458
Dtrace also highlights the files that backupd uses unfortuately the only files it opened before it started its backup were:

    *Next Steps*
I've been thinking about what i could try next and not having many ideas. So I'm really hoping someone here will have a flash of inspiration.
If I find some time at the weekend then I will try renaming my account again and verifying that it does backup under a new name.
Just incase there is something odd about the first user account created, i.e. UID:501 I will make a new 'ritchiem' account (which will have the next UID, UID:504) and see if that gets backed up, I can try this while my current account has been renamed. If that does work then I can copy my files back in to that account and verify it isn't something in my home directory that is upsetting TM. Although I doubt this is the case as it never read any files from home space during the backup process.
Here's hoping there is something in the above logs etc, that give a clue to what might be going wrong.
    Cheers
    Martin

  • Backup iPhone question

When I bought my iPhones and also bought a backup iPhone. It's still in the box unopened. I always buy a backup because I only have a cell phone. So I buy a backup of the phone I am using at the time. If my cell dies at 11pm, I can just put my SIM into my backup. Been doing this for years.
So. The unopened iPhone. I wanted to connect it up and update it to the latest software. Then put it back in storage for backup.
    The question is:
Is it possible to take an iPhone, update it and then go back to my main iPhone? My iPhone is an 8 gig version. The backup is a 4 gig.
Do I have to activate the backup iPhone if I connect it to iTunes to update? Will this screw up my ATT account?
Can an iPhone user go back and forth between iPhones?
All other cell phones I've owned over the years I could just swap out the SIMS. The network didn't care and activation was a non-issue.
Anyone see any problems with my iPhone scenario?

This should not be a problem but you must activate this iPhone with AT&T and iTunes to be able to use it and/or update it with any available Apple updates but this will or should be an abbreviated iPhone activation process of the original since you are using an existing AT&T SIM card that is already activated. This will have no affect on your AT&T account. If an iPhone is lost or stolen, the same applies.
Once this new iPhone is activated with AT&T and iTunes, you can switch the SIM card between iPhones and you can use your iPhone's SIM card with another AT&T provided phone or an unlocked GSM phone.
