Fail to reinstall snow leopard on my 2011 MBP(MC723LL/A)

Hi all,
I don't have the original DVD with me. Recently I accidently deleted some files and can't log into the system again. I actually downloaded snow leopard 10.6.3 retial and burned it into a flash drive using another old MBP. This bootable usb can work on the old MBP, but cannot work on my 2011 MBP. Is it because 10.6.3 is too old? How could I reinstall snow leopard to my 2011 MBP without the DVD?
   Many thanks!

The processor is 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, maybe because of this.

  • Installing Snow Leopard onto early 2011 MBP SSD

I want to install a Crucial M500 480GB into my early 2011 MacBook Pro. First, two questions:
Performance and speed-wise, which OS should I install? Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks?
Say I decide to install Snow Leopard onto the SSD (fresh install). How would I do that? Given that:
my model will not boot up from the retail Snow Leopard disk (I had to clone a drive from an early 2008 Mac Pro containing 10.6.8 to my MBP's drive)
the early 2008 Mac Pro only has 3.5" bays and SATA II connectors (the SSD I want is SATA III)
What I have in mind is this (feel free to improve/correct if anything is wrong or could be done better):
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my current MBP HD (which includes a Bootcamp partition) to an empty drive on my Mac Pro.
Install the SSD into the MBP.
Boot into Target Disk Mode so the SSD mounts on the MP. Then use the MP's Disk Utility to format SSD to correct settings.
Clone drive containing 10.6.8 from MP to MBP's SSD.
Boot into Target Disk Mode (the other way) so MP's drives mount onto MBP. Move wanted files from old HD to new SSD.
Thanks for taking the time to help out!

I purchased a USB 3 enclosure from OWC and inserted my new SSD. Plugged it into my 2011 MBP with SL and used Disk Utility to Restore my internal MBP HDD over to my SSD. Afterwards I tested the SSD to be sure I could boot from it. Last, I installed it into my MBP and it booted up with no issue. Everything went smooth.

  • My mac pro crashed. Apple genius people said to reinstall snow leopard. I did and it failed to start after i installed. I started with the power button, tried to install upgrades, and now I get only a grey screen with spining wheel.

How can I restart a mac pro that shows only a grey screen with a spinning wheel. I reinstalled snow leopard (10.6.3) over 10.6.8 because apple genious people said I had problems with my library files after a time capsule crash. I reinstalled but when done I got only a blue screen. I restarted with the power button and tried to insall 10.6 combined upgrades. I got an error message that it could not install because of an error. When I powered down and tried to restart, I get only a grey screen. My optical drive does not open so I can't restart from another source.

Restart, holding down the mouse button. That should eject the disc. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC.  Then, pop in the install disc, restart with it in again, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. select the boot volume and repair the disk.

  • I can't boot my MBP or reinstall snow leopard

I have an old 2005 MBP (non unibody) using snow leopard. I urgently need to get it running again since it stopped booting up last feb 2012 and I haven't used it since as I'm using a desktop now. When I turn it on I get no chime and the screen goes grey with an alternating apple logo, and a no entry sign, and occasionally a folder with a question mark on it. When I insert snow leopard and reboot it allows me to select language, and the home screen comes up with the option to reinstall the OS. I have also been to the utilities>disk utilities and tried verifying and then repairing the HD. When verifying it says my drive appears to be ok, and when repairing it appears to have not fixed anything. I've then quitter DU and gone back to try re-installing snow leopard and although the progress bar estimates 30mins or so it takes hours, then gets to about 3/4 done and comes up with a failure message saying..
    Install Failed
Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer
The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail.
    Contact the manufacturer for assistance
Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again
I did have the installer log window open whilst trying this and the last line before the install failure message contains loads of stuff which means nothin to me but contained within this text is this "an error occurred while extracting files from the package " lexmark_laserdrivers.pkg". Underlying error=(error domain=BOMcopierfatalerror code=28....(loads more text after this..)
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • TS1440 When I start up, there is only the flashing folder with a question mark on it. When I tried to reinstall snow leopard, there is no hard disk to be found.

After rebooting my computer, there is only the flashing folder with "?" on it. I tried several things like PRAM resetting and whatnot, but nothing worked. I then tried to reinstall Snow Leopard, but it appears there is no hard disc to be found to install it. I also wanted to repair the disk first but it wasn't present in disk utilities. Did I lose my hard drive, or is this still salvagable?

That is evidence that your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

  • How to get pass login after reinstalling snow leopard

I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade to maverick and got an error message stating that the Macintosh HD disk is damaged and to erase the disk and try to install again.  I did erase the Macintosh HD disk, reinstalled snow leopard because I have a mid 2010-2011 iMac and reset my password.  I was successful  but a lot of the icons were missing and did a software update. I ran into problems when I downloaded some software updates and the computer re- booted and now I can't get pass the login screen.  Every time I put in my password, the computer accepts the password and I think it is going to bring up the desktop but it just go back to the login screen.  I really don't know how to solve this problem, so I'm hoping someone could tell me what to do.

  • Reinstalling snow leopard on a machine that has mountain lion

Having trouble reinstalling Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro (aluminum 17", 2008 or so) that is currently running Mountain Lion... advice?

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Reinstalling Snow Leopard MacBook Air into Mavericks/Lion

    Hi!
I have a MacBook Air from 2011 with Snow Leopard on it. I want to wipe my hardrive clean and install either Lion or Mavericks on it. The problem with the 2011 model with Snow Leopard is that you cannot reboot and reinstall it without a USB key, right? So, if I install either Lion or Mavericks on the computer before I reinstall it, will that give me an option to reinstall without an USB key, or is it a permanent condition for the Macbook Air from 2011 to be without an Internet recovery mode?
    Thanks in advance!

While not exactly answering your specific questions, my advice:  Partition your hard drive for a new 2nd partition of about 80% of the remaining capacity.  Install Lion or Mavericks into the new partition.
That way you have a Snow Leopard partition to work with by "dual-booting" (Startup Disk in System Preferences).  If you discover that some of your software will not work in Lion/Mavericks, you have the Snow Leopard option to work with them.
Reinstalling Snow Leopard after a complete wipe/install Lion or Mavericks will be very difficult and time consuming.
    BACK UP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!

  • How do you erase Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard

I want to remove Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard.  I put the install disc in and clicked Install so that I could get to the disc utilities.  Got a reading that this version of OS X cannot be used on this computer.  I'm using a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro.  I don't have any backups made, but I am not worried about that...I just want to go back to using Snow Leopard.  Lion has too many quirks I don't want to put up with.  Any suggestions?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

  • I can't reinstall Snow Leopard iLife programs

I just reinstalled Snow Leopard on my Mac mini using the disc that came with my computer.  When I tried to install the iLife programs the install failed and the install window said call Apple.  The discs came out of their envelopes for the first time tonight.  What gives?

    Tracy,
You say you installed SL, your profile says Mavericks, a little confusing there.
Did you purchase from Apple or Amazon?
If you installed SL you would need iLife '11 (oild version) for Mavericks you would need the the iLife '11 (new version)
Maybe there was a mix up on that.
Call Apple customer service as the message said and find out what the desl is.

  • Reinstalled Snow Leopard - or did I??

    HI all.
Lately my Snow Leopard has become a Snow Turtle. Harddisk is spinning alot and many operations must wait and wait before it becomes their turn. Harddisk has been checked, permissions repaired and many other tricks that should have solved the problem. Finally I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac24.
The disc was inserted and a reinstall was tried. Everything went smooth and the Mac restarted fine. However it seems like no reinstall has been made. There are no softwareupgrades available and a new folder called Mac OS X Install Data has appeared at the toplevel besides Applications, Library and users. It contains a long row of software updaters pretty much like the folder Receipts that are nomally located in the Library folder.
    What has happened???

    Thanks - of course...
I believe this is the problem:
    X.app/Contents/Resources/InstallAssistantTool106[836]: Couldn't bless the installation disk: disk1
If I recall correctly this means that the installation disc could not be set as the boot volume?
Well, what do I do next - find another Installation DVD?
    Best regards
    Jesper

  • I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac (Spring '08)...

I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac (Spring '08) and part way through the install my screen shuts off and does nothing but my computer is still running. I've turned it off, unplugged it and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I turn it back up and hold down "c" to boot from disk and the install screen pops back up. I do a disk check and it passes so I try to install again, which it says it can restore the last install's process and then begins installing again. After about 10-15 minutes my screen shuts off and goes to sleep, my mouse and keyboard will not wake it up. All I have plugged in is the mighty mouse and keyboard. This is getting frustrating...

    Reset the SMC
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.

  • I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how  to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard?

    Hello,
I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how  to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard? I tried to do it by my original CDs but macbook  pro didn't let me to do it.
    Thanks

It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
