Failed 10.6 Upgrade leaves 50GB+ of data??? Stumped...

I attempted to run the retail 10.6 upgrade on my main internal 500GB on my MBP 17 (early 2007) with 10.5.8. At least 55Gb was available.
The install failed with a "Contact the manufacturer" message. I rebooted off the main internal drive which was still using 10.5.8 but there was only about 120MB available on startup.
Before upgrading there was at least 55GB available. After many attempts - I cannot locate the 58GB or so of data that the install process created.
I tried re-installing to see if it would "see" the incomplete install. The 10.6 installer did seem to see a "incomplete upgrade" but it would not proceed as there was not enough drive space.
I tried running Disk Utility from the 10.6 installer disk and DU says that it could not Repair the drive and to erase/initialize to use the drive.
I rebooted again back off the internal and after a very long startup - I am back up and running with 10.5.8 and again - a whopping 55GB of unaccounted for data. I erased about 6 GB of old stuff just to keep working on it. I have the drive backed up remotely but not a local copy. I want to just clone my drive but dont want to clone the 55GB of un-needed data.
In command line I ran:
$ df -h
It shows that /dev/disk0s2 has:
Size: 465 Gi
Used: 459 Gi
Avail: 6.1 Gi
Capacity: 99%
So I look at all my directories (inluding hidden) to see what they were taking up:
sudo du -hs ./*
The main ones being:
14G ./Applications
33G ./Library
3.9G ./System
335G ./Users
3.7G ./private
1.1G ./usr
(the rest were 10MB or less)
This adds up to just over 390GB.
I cannot figure out where the other 68GB is being used for the total reported 459GB that it says is being used.
How can I find where this data is?

I don't remember exactly where but, the installer places all the files it needs for the upgrade on the local drive and then swaps the files, reboots, loads the new files, etc. There are still other directories besides the ones listed below (and, not contained within /private) for instance bin, dev, home, net, sbin... But, it sounds like the files are still sitting on your drive and the system is just not able to make the swap. Likely, the issue Disk Utility reports is preventing loading the new software. I would say you're still looking at backing up, initializing the drive, reinstalling 10.5.x, then 10.6.x, then loading the updates, migrating your data... You've got a job ahead! Not hard but definitely time consuming.

Firefox 3.6.3 fails to close itself, leaving an open instance in Task Manager of Windows 7 x64 each time the browser is closed. The instance needs to be closed manually in order to successfully start new browser session. This seems to happen in OEM version of Windows 77. There are no issues with a retail version of the OS. The problem started with a fresh, new install of Windows 7 with no other software installed.

  • Wasn't given option to "upgrade" and lost user data

I was trying to upgrade from 10.2.9 to 10.3 yesterday and during the install I didn't see an option to "upgrade" or save the data that was already on the computer (iMac G3). After the install I see that there are no users except the account I was asked to create during the install. So I guess it did a clean install and deleted all the data from the drive? But then I notice that the trash has files in it from before the install. Nothing I'm looking for, but that tells me that some things didn't get removed altogether.
So I'm wondering if there is a way for me to recover the users data that was on here before I did the install.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. : )
    Thanks a lot,
    -Garner

If you are upgrading to 10.3 from a previous major version the Upgrade option is usually the default. If you simply clicked along the upgrade install is performed (unless there is some problem.) Are you sure the user accounts have been deleted? Are you sure you didn't do an Archive and Install? If so, check in the root directory of the hard drive for a Previous System Folder.

Yes, I am publishing it to BC. It happened the other day too but had
never happened in the previous 9 months that I have been using Muse (and

Seems quite unlikely but let's hope so.

You can try DiskWarrior (about $100).
If that doesn't work, and if you have no backups at all, you might need to send your hard drive to Drive Savers or a similar service. It will cost a lot of money to get the data back, I'm sorry to say.

I have RDS 2012 session deployment in Azure with connection broker high availability.
The "Remote Desktop Management" service does not start automatically when the connection broker virtual machines are stopped and started.
I see the below error in event logs of both the connection broker VMs
Note: WHen i manually start the "Remote Desktop Management" service after this error, it all works without issues.
    I get

    Warning 10154 - in Microsoft-Windows-Windows Remote Management
The WinRM service failed to create the following SPNs:
     Additional Data
     The error received was 1355

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
In respect to error 46, this issue may occur if the computer boots without a configured dump file. The default dump file is the pagefile. During a clean Windows OS installation, the very first boot will hit this condition as the pagefile has not been set up
    yet.
To resolve this issue, you may want complete the paging file configuration.
    More information:
Event ID 46 logged when you start a computer
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2756313/EN-US
In regards to error 10154, you need to create the SPN specified in the event using the
setspn.exe utility and also need to grant the “Validated Write to Service Principal Name” permission to the NETWORK SERVICE.
For more information refer beneath articles.
