Failed 17"MBP HD replaced by Genius, now screen is small/not as bright

I have read that with the 17" macbook pro you cannot change the size of everything w/out adjusting the resolution, but I am positive before my hard drive failed and was replaced by the apple store everything was bigger. After having my hard drive replaced everything is extremely small and my screen will not go as bright as it would before. Any suggestions?

You can try decreasing the screen resolution in system preferences>display and see if you can find a size you are comfortable with.

Hi,
I am presuming you are looking in the Video Menu but are finding you do not have "permission" to enable Screen Sharing.
In Messages Menu > Preferences > Video section what speed setting is set in the Bandwidth Limit drop down ?
It should be no lower that 200kbps if you want to Video chat or Screen Share (the Min for both is 128kbps)
Even if it shows a speeds higher than this change it to something like 500kbps then close/Quit Messages and then restart it. (i.e change the setting anyway to give a bot of a jolt)

Try doing it in a WIndows Safe mode - Restart computer and hit F8 key right after your see BIOS check and choose "Safe mode with networking"
Do the SFC /SCANNOW again.
If that does not work, whilst in safe mode, download Free Malwarebyte software from CNET's Download.com. Install, update virus definition then perform a full scan. Remove if it did find some viruses or trojans. Restart computer.
Back to regular windows, do the SFC /SCANNOW again.
If that doesnot work, check to see if your Hard drive has errors or bad sectors
GO START BUTTON /COMPUTER, right mouse click OS (C:) and choose "Properties"
Choose "Tools" tab and under error checking, click "Check Now".
Make sure "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" is checked and click start.
Restart windows will perform the above task to fix errors This may take hours depends on how big is your Hard Drive

Replaced Optical Drive now Mac book will not boot up

I bought a second hand Mac Book Pro A1150 model. It did not have an optical drive so I bought one, installed it and now my Mac Book will not boot up. When I take the drive out the Mac Book boots up fine. I was told that the optical drive although used was tested and work when it was shipped out. I'm a little new to Macs but not new to working on computers. Is it common for a possible defective optical drive to casue a Mac Book pr to not boot up or does this sound like an issue with the optical drive cable, or possibly the logic board?

That is true. I cannot think of any way to test the Optical Drive without swapping it into a known correctly operating MBP.
A thought which probably may not be an issue. When I installed an Optical Drive in my old (2006) MBP, I remember seeing in the instruction manual an item called a grounding pad (which looked like a tiny steel brillo pad with out soap) which was missing in mine. The MBP worked and I essentially ignored it. Perhaps that may not be case with your situation.
My thoughts are that the Optical Drive is malfunctioning and the cause of your problem. Perhaps you should consider getting a new replacement from OWC. But that entails a $100 risk with no guarantees of success.

Small Liquid Spill on MBP Keyboard... Now not working. Any Help?

I recently spilled a very small amount of liquid on my MBP keyboard (~3 drops), and now the keyboard does not work at all. Any diagnoses or solutions?? I really can't seem to believe that such a small amount of liquid could damage it so much, but maybe I'm missing something! Thanks in advance!

What you are seeing happens when the ambient light level is bright enough so the Mac judges that you don't need keyboard backlighting. If you don't agree and want backlighting anyway, download and install [Lab Tick|http://labtick.proculo.de> to gain full manual control over it.

MBP battery "replace now"

I have a mid 2010 MBP and the battery is now showing a "replace now" status after 45 cycle counts. We have an imac & ipad so I barely use this. Would Apple replace this without me paying? I think this battery is "lemon"

Just checked the AC T&C (I registered AC on mine yesterday). Batteries not covered. So on that angle you're not covered. BUT the unibody batteries are supposed to last with 80% capacity at 1000 cycles so if you play your cards right you may get lucky at the Store.

if you have replaced the logic board on your phone, by yourself then that is considered modification and can cause other parts to fail due to ESD issues or just damage from handling parts

However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. I have all my data and work backed up and will be able to rebuild my system but I really do not want to have to go through this down the line again.

Just to update everyone and maybe help people down the road .... It has been a week of **** .... I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point ..... More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest, I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control - This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... They are not that clear but if you are going through this you will recognize the images for sure - There was so many more variations but this should help out - Thanks to everyone that takes the time out to help people on this support site .... pleased to announce that it's back to normal (fingers crossed).
brought it to the genius bar and the guy booted it using his external hard drive, ran a check on disk utilities and found my internal hard drive to be fine. however, when he tried to reinstall osx, there was an error message saying it could not be done.
i ended up buying an external hard disk, transferring my files to that, and then doing a clean install of osx.
he said if this hadn't worked, i would probably have had to get a new hard drive (although the files were there, other bits might have been corrupted), hard drive cable, or logic board.
he can't pinpoint the exact reason, but posited that it might have been that while a software update (either apple's or any other application) was taking place, i might have accidentally unplugged the power adaptor, closed the cover, or the mac had gone to sleep - thus affecting the system.
i'll be backing up my files regularly from now on!

Basically i just want to know 3 things: What exactly does consolidating the itunes library do? Can i copy, paste, and transfer my itunes library to an external and from there to a new pc? I have found a temporary solution, allowing the previous version of iTunes (v. 11.1.3 (x64) in my case) to be re-installed. It will allow you to re-establish use of iTunes until the Apple software engineers fix the most recent disasterous upgrade (v. 11.1.4). uninstall, clean (Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6) and then properly install (do not migrate, use timemachine etc) using the installation files.

How can I import contacts from Snow Leopard iMac to my Mavericks MBP without replacing all of the contacts.

*** Updated - FIgured this out right after I posted... I simply selected all contacts on the iMac, exported as a .vcf then dragged that into the MBP contacts ***

I have a MacBook Pro (MBP) running Mavericks... syncs contacts via iCloud with my iOS devices. My iMac is an original intel model from 2006 which can only run Snow Leopard. I have many contacts on that iMac that I would like to copy into the contacts on my MBP.
I used the 'Address Book Archive' feature on my iMac - transferred that to a flash drive then tried to import into the MBP contacts at which point it said it would replace the contents on my MBP... something I do NOT want to do.
Does anyone have a way of bringing all of my iMac contacts in to the MBP without replacing?
I appreciate any help... Thank you !

Hold down shift and click on the last contact
Click the gear box at the bottom of the screen
Choose "Export vcard..."

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

Hi, Michelle. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Have you tried resetting the SMC? The SMC (System Management Controller) has control over the charging function, so resetting it may help.
