  • Failed backup/invisible  backup file

I tried to do a Time Machine backup of my iMac G5 to my Powerbook G4 using Firewire Target Disk mode. The backup failed and now my Powerbook HD is practically full but I can't erase the failed backup file or write over it either... I can't find the file on the disk to delete it.... any suggestions? Thanks!

this really shouldn't be necessary but I don't know where the backups might be hiding. it ought to be somewhere at the top level of the drive.
can you boot from PB? if yes, boot from it and use the instructions on [this page|http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/TigerMisc.html] to search out what's taking all the space.

  • After failed backup album artwork/info is scrambled

After a failed backup when syncing my iPod Touch first Gen. (power failure during extended backup taking hours) my album artwork and sometimes the artist names are not with their proper songs. ie.: "Born Again" by Newsboys shows the Switchfoot album cover and is listed as "The Waiting," but still plays the song correctly.
I have already tried resyncing it to my Mac, and shutting down and resyncing. I have checked my iTunes and all of the original music info there is fine... just on my iPod is it all scrambled.
Please help. If I have to start over (again) I just might cry.
    :B

I bought one new song on my computer, then re-sync'd... *four long hours later*, after it *completely reset the iPod*, it then put the info back in order.
However, it also meant that my Mail messages, my Address Book and every app was reset to the last saved reset. Had to redo everything to get it back.
_Take screenshots of your app pages_ of your iPod/iPhone and put them on your computer so that you can put the apps all back where you had them before you reset your iPod.

  • RMAN Failed Backup.

    Hello Folks,
    DB 10.2.0.4
    OS AIX 5.3
How RMAN handles failed backup. If I have failed backups in between two successful backups, and under my retention policy window. When RMAN is going to obsolete failed backups? After my retention window ?
    Thanks for your time.

+5) you issue 'delete obsolete' - again nothing is deleted, the backup from Friday is still needed (although meanwhile 8 days old) ,because the second backup from Tuesday is incomplete.+
I'm definitely not sure of this and already tested it: (oracle 10.2.0.4 - rman - AIX)
If you have a recovery windows of 3 days. If your backups are good or failed, after 3 days they'll be all deleted after these kind of commands:
    crosscheck backup of database;
    delete expired backup;
If the date is older then the 3 days, even if it will delete all the backup of the database from the catalog, then all will be deleted. Then your job is to not have this kind of things happening. (Rman will not say "Oh there's only one backup avalaible I'll keep it to be safe".)
The difference here is that a failed backup will immediately be marked as "obsolete" even before the 3 days and the normal backups will have the rentention policy of 3 days but not more.
Add to this that the retention is sometime shared with other party like tape manager that can automatically delete the backup on tape after 3 days to clean tapes and free space. (So if Rman was able to "think" and change the rule alone it'll not be good anyway)
If you have a recovery window in term of number of backups then it'll be quite different.
In this case all the failer backup will be immediately marked as "obsolete" and will not be counted in the database backup.
Means that if you have the number of backup to 2, it'll take 2 good backup

Make sure you run the most recent version of StarWind which is V8 and also you've applied all source registry tricks StarWind ppl require you to apply (no StarWind code runs on a client so no way to check it automagically). In any case I'd capture StarWind
log and post to StarWind support forum or support account e-mail asking for help :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Lost Notes App on iPad after failed backup and reset, how do i find them?

I have lost very important notes from my Notes App on my iPad2 after a failed backup and reset. How do I find my lost notes? They do not appear to be backed up in my iCloud account or Gmail account.

This happened to me too but it was really all there.  Go to your calendar, click on calendar in the upper left hand corner, click on show all calendars, click done in the right upper corner.  Everything should show up!!!
I was super thrilled.  Hope this works for you!!

  • Time Capsule Failing Backup Part Way Through

My TC is constantly failing backup part way through but only when I'm backing up my MBP.  It finishes fine when backing up my iMac.  The solution proposed in the error message, to repair backup disk via Disk Utility, doesn't work as the Airport/TC doesn't appear on Disk Utility.
I can see the TC via Airport Utility and it all looks to be working fine.  I have a external HD attached to the Airport and can access that fine.
Any ideas as it's now a while since I've been able to back up.
    Thanks

The solution proposed in the error message, to repair backup disk via Disk Utility, doesn't work as the Airport/TC doesn't appear on Disk Utility.
Unfortunately, the error message leaves out some details, things like the fact that you have drag the sparsebundle file containing your backups into the Disk Utility window to repair them. More info from the great Pondini is here:
    http://pondini.org/TM/A5b.html
If you run Repair Disk several times and problem continues, the only real option at that point is to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with backups.

  • Recovering Lost iPhone Data After Failed Backup

So my mother is somewhat technically challenged and has never backed up her iphone before.. Basically I told her to do so and get the newest software update but I think an error occurred during the backup procedure and she continued with the update/restore anyways. So she lost all of her data and is very sad . Is there any possible way to find the data either on the restored empty phone, or on the computer from the failed backup (maybe it made a corrupted file that we can fix?)
    Please help!
    Thanks!

No, sorry.  Without a backup it is gone.  Did you backup to iCloud by chance?

  • Failed backup with Time Capsule, how to correct Error 11?

I just recently bought the Time Capsule and started using it with my MacBook. It performed the initial backup just fine, but then about two weeks after, I started getting failed backup messages. I recently checked this discussion forum and tried some of the suggestions with no success. So then I launched Consule (like one of the discussion threads recommended) and typed backupd and copied and pasted what was recorded when I tried to run the backup again. Can anyone help me make sense of what is going on here and what Error: 11 means and how to solve it? Thanks.

  • Restore to factory, failed backups, files can't be found etc etc - Win7?

    Multiple probs...
have got to the point that wondering if there is an iTunes/Win7 issue...
    Apple product: iPhone 3Gs 32GB*
    Computer OS: Win7
+* NB: Throughout all of these issues iTunes repeatedly showed capacity as only 4GB, then at some point would switch to partially showing correct capacity (ie. had diff information between.. capacity shown in summary details, and that shown in used/free space status bar), OR would switch to fully showing correct capacity info (ie. summary details and used/free status bar info would agree).+
    *ISSUE 1*
Orig issue - stopped being able to add music/video. Error message something like found folder where expected file.
    *ISSUE 2*
Backed up iPhone (backup appeared successful.
Restored phone to factory settings (appeared successful)
Tried to restore backup > iTunes error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed" *NB: Searched computer, found the location that iTunes saves backup, files ARE there, and checked all photos and contacts are there (just in format that will need to translate if need to access via non-iTunes means)*
    *ISSUE 3*
(Considered that might have been something wrong with my orig files, I decided to test with newly reset iPhone.)
Set up as new phone (as no choice).
Set up new music and added to phone (appeared successful; music visible on phone).
Repeated with more music; then started to get error message (for tracks that had orig been added successfully "The iPhone cannot be synced. The required file could not be found"
    *ISSUE 4*
Tried to reset again to factory.
Had to use the Hard Reset method (simultaneously hold power button & home button, til slide bar for power off. Powered off. With iTunes running, hold down home button as plug into computer. iTunes recognises, asks if wish to reset device. Say yes, proceed through entire process, including entering simcard lock code, looks successful. Phone then has the "connect to iTunes"image.
Did this repeatedly without success (always returned to be frozen on the connect to iTunes image. Tried all sorts of combinations - unplugging, rebooting pc, nothing worked... once phone got to this point every time it was plugged in iTunes froze, as soon as unplugged iTunes fully functional. Considered that iTunes might be processing slowly, so searched again... found webpage said to "Keep your device connected until the Connect to iTunes screen goes away or you see iPhone is activated." ref http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
So repeated factory restore, and at end left phone connected overnight and still no change (still displaying connect to iTunes image). In morning, still no progress (still showing connect to iTunes image).
    *ISSUE 5*
Happened to unplug phone, and replug into computer (not holding down home button or anything). iTunes then finally recognised phone. However, when tried to restore backup repeatedly still get error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed"
So unless set up as new phone again, am stuck.
    Back to ISSUE 2/3 status.
Expect that if go ahead with setting up as new phone again, will not be able to backup phone successfully, and at some stage will stop being able to add music etc.
    *ISSUE 6*
Have tried to go ahead with setting up new phone. Still no success.
Multiple error messages, most recent being
"The iPhone X cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file."
Are there known problems with Windows 7? Or is this apple software issue? Apple hardware?<</div>
At this stage I no longer have a phone (it my phone for everywhere), or sanity buster for 15-20 hours/week commuting. Not particularly comfortable with that...

    Hi, thanks for your feedback.
No. None of music in iTunes synced. By "none of them showing probs"... Meant that iTunes can see all of those files, so no prob of that type; HOWEVER those files cannot be synced to iPhone. This is current status. Previously files HAD synced to iPhone.
Ie one of first things that did was to reset all to ensure that working with only small test sample to minimize room for corrupted files.
So situation is phone reset to factory; newly installed iTunes on new laptop, with new iPhone profile. In iTunes only small number of music files, that I've newly added to reduce chance that those files corrupted.
From all that reading, and from discussions having with few fellow developers/analysts at work, thoughts are that iTunes not playing nice with 62bit Win7.
Does anyone have contact with apple to have confirmed?
There are number threads even just in this forum, reflecting same thoughts
    Cheers

  • Time machine fails backup

    Can anyone advise me?
I use Time Machine to backup. All has been well the backups were flawless until recently when I decided that I needed to encrypt my sensitive work and personal files placing them into an encrypted Apple Disk Image on my hard disk. Ever since then at some stage Time Machine had decided that there is insufficient disk space and the backup fails.
When it first began to fail I increased the backup disk space and began a fresh start backup.
The backup disk is now 1 TB and the total amount on my hard disk to be backed up to backup is 183 gb which includes the disk image which is 40 gb.
The only change has been the creation of the disk image otherwise everything else is the same. Would it be better to have a number of disk image files and spread the encrypted material across smaller dmgs?

Thank you for your response which is very helpful. I have changed the dmg to a sparse bundle and Time Machine appears to be handling the backup better.
Initially I was confused about the difference between a sparse image and a sparse bundle but read in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2001162?start=0&tstart=0 what the difference is and see that the sparse bundle appears to have been developed by Apple for exactly my kind of problem.
You say that "… be aware that disk image files are not backed up at all while the image is mounted."
I do not wish to disagree but when I was backing up the vanilla dmg and also last night backing the sparse bundle dmg the back up has worked and did work on the mounted disk. In my case the disc is always mounted as it contains the bulk of the files I work on. Perhaps I have misunderstood what you were saying.
Thank you again for your response.

  • Failed Backup Message on mac

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro, and transferred everything on my old hard drive over to my new laptop. When I tried to backup my BlackBerry Curve for the first time, my old BlackBerry Desktop software failed to recognize my device. Then I downloaded a new version of the desktop software, which DOES recognize and connect with my device -- but: every time I try to back-up now, I get the same message:
The backup failed due to an unexpected error.
Try backing up your data again. If the issue continues, please contact RIM technical support.
Any tips from anyone to help me solve this?

    Hi ChipW,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community.
To resolve this issue, could you please confirm the current location for your Backups to be saved? To do this, open BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac and click on the BlackBerry Desktop Software option at the top left corner next to the apple icon.
Then select Preferences and change the location of the backup or use the Reset button to change the location to the Documents folder of  your current user account. Then retry the Backup.
Let me know if that helps.

  • Time capsule keeps failing backups

it seems I must be insane.  I have a new wireless 2TB TC, i use it to back up, well I try to.  It seems once in awhile with no set pattern, it will not back up.  it says cannot and brings up a window with a folder in it called "backup.backups" something like that.  I am trying to get it to give the error right now exactly.  Except now it seems the reandomness has struck and it is backing up. . .It is just arduous. . .I ahve three other new TCs that I could try but that is not desirable.
I know it is going to fail as it is spinning in task bar "looking for backup disk"  I am tired of reinitializing this, as it take HOURS to rebuild.
OOOOPS HERE WE GO, this is the error:  The backup disk image “/Volumes/dwillis/David’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
LOVE APPLE STUFF!!! I want to be able to say "my TC just works!"  I can't though. . .
    HELP!!??
    Dave
    I appreciate the help. . .

Welcome to Lion.. and TC bug heaven.
Restart the TC.. that is the easiest way.. it will then work. A previous backup has not ejected properly.
But there are slower albeit neater solutions.. login to the TC (not using the toy v6 airport utility in Lion.. download the TOOL version utility.. 5.6)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the disk page, manual setup and disconnect all users. Then it will be able to start.

  • Time Machine failed backup

Today I used DiskWarrior 4.3 to check all my drives - it repeatedly failed to rebuild my Time Machine Backup drive, stating that there was insufficient memory.
Now repeated attempts to back up have failed.
"Backup failed"! is all I get - Time Machine is still ok, that is, I can still open it and retrieve old files, but not backup new ones...
    Any ideas?
Any help gratefully received, but I have to leave work now, so cannot reply until tomorrow morning, apologies for that.
    Cheers

Sorry guys - DiskWarrior failed to rebuild my Time Machine backup drive twice because of "lack of memory", and when i subsequently went to backup at the end of the day the backup failed, twice.
In TM preferences my normal TM backup drive was greyed out and I consequently thought that it was unavailable.
However, all I had to do was click on it - and it became available and all was well, as simple as that!

hfs: unmount initiated on Time Machine Backups on device disk2s2
In efforts to clean it up I installed new firmware on the drive and ran the Verify backup from If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine -
I let it for a while as its doing a full backup but it has not stopped like before with the "backup failed message".
