Failed boot after (apparently) successful SSD installation
Tried to replace the main hard drive of my wife's 13 inch MacBook with an SSD restored from a Time Machine backup. Everything seemed to go smoothly, but the machine won't boot, it just keeps showing "You need to restart your computer." Ran disk utility and everything seems OK on the new drive. It's a GUID partition, disk verify shows no problems. But it won't boot. New drive is a 120 GB Vertex 2. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
There are issues with some versions of Apple laptops and certain Vertex drives. I bumped in to the issue on OCZ support forums when I decided to go for a Vertex. The conclusion was that my old 1,1 MacBook Pro would be fine and it is but others have had problems. Your best bet is to have a look at their forums as there may be a better advice on there.

Unable to login to apex as admin after apparent successful installation
I am unable to login to apex as admin after an apparent successful installation.
I have an existing Oracle database 11.2.0.1.0 with Oracle Text running on Windows 7 Professional with hundreds of gigabytes of free disk space available. I did everything as an operating system user with administrator privileges. I downloaded the latest version of apex 4.0.2 for all languages, unzipped the downloaded zip file, extracting all files to an apex directory. I changed the working directory to apex and started sql*plus, connected sys as sysdba, ran apexins.sql installation, apex_epg_config.sql and apexconf.sql configuration, apexchpwd.sql to change the admin password, and apxldimg.sql to copy the images, and exec dbms_xdb.sethttpport(8080), unlocked accounts, and granted connect privileges.
The installation log did not show any errors and included:
"Thank you for installing Oracle Application Express.
Oracle Application Express is installed in the APEX_040000 schema.
The structure of the link to the Application Express administration services is as follows:
http://host:port/pls/apex/apex_admin (Oracle HTTP Server with mod_plsql)
http://host:port/apex/apex_admin (Oracle XML DB HTTP listener with the embedded PL/SQL gateway)
The structure of the link to the Application Express development interface is as follows:
http://host:port/pls/apex (Oracle HTTP Server with mod_plsql)
http://host:port/apex (Oracle XML DB HTTP listener with the embedded PL/SQL gateway)
JOB_QUEUE_PROCESSES: 1000"
When I use either browser, Firefox 3.6.12 or Internet Explorer 8.0, and go to http://localhost:8080/apex/apex_admin I get a screen that says:
"Enter Application Express internal administration credentials"
and has boxes for a username and password. When I enter admin and the admin_password that I selected, then click on login nothing happens. I don't get logged in. I don't get an error message. It does not show any signs of anything running. It just sits there. I also don't get any messages from Windows or Norton 360 indicating that a pop-up window was blocked or any such thing. I checked that the services are running and also tried shutting down the computer and re-starting (cold boot), but was still unable to login.
I am a retired developer, not a DBA, so if there is anything else that I should do or check or provide, then please let me know. I have provided a copy and paste of everything that I could think of below. Oddly I don't see an admin user.

SQL>Are you sure you did give right path to script ? Yes.

If you extract files to folder c:\temp, you have after that folder c:\temp\apex and bunch of sub folders.
For script to update images, you give path to folder where you did extract apex install files.
In above case that is then c:\temp .
>I created a directory c:\apex on my laptop. I downloaded the zip file to that directory. When I extracted the files to folder c:\apex, the result was c:\apex\apex with a bunch of sub folders and files. When I ran the script, I gave the path c:\apex as indicated in my copy and paste. So, I did everything the same as in the quote above, except that I used apex instead of temp.
Try extract Apex install zip to c:\temp and give c:\temp as path for scriptAre you suggesting that I redo the entire installation using c:\temp instead of c:\apex? What difference would that make? Would I need to do some sort of uninstall first? -
Ubuntu 11.10 failed to boot after (un)successful install on Thinkpad X61
Hello,
I installed Ubuntu from a USB drive and now it won't boot. I get the screen from which I can enter BIOS and manually boot from the USB stick but it won't automatically boot from the HDD. if I don't do that, what happens is that once the BIOS screen disappears all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. nothing else happens anymore. pressing down any key has no effect.
Shortly before finishing the installation, I get this message: "An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed". it doesn't say that the installation as a whole failed thought...
Your help is appreciated!Hi red_revenger,
Can you try formatting the usb in fat32 with the windows (or Linux) tool and after that dump again the ISO image to your usb with unetbootin.
If the problem persist, make a test with another distro, or another version of ubuntu.
If after all steps above you can't still start the system, the problem might be elsewhere. Post back the outcome.

Failed boot after moving hard drive (IDE not SATA)
Greetings all.
I am attempting to setup a headless box, and in doing so I am installing Arch on one system (Sapphire Axion A3-M275 Motherboard), then moving the hard drive to the new system (SGS1660, a VIA CLE266/VT8235 based headless rack-solution). After moving the drive into the SGS1660, the system fails to boot. Attached output from the Serial Console:

I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.
Thanks for the help in advance!Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.
Hope this is useful to someone -

This is the exact SSD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=77394 89&tab=7&SRCCODE=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_mmc=Email-_-WebletMain-_-WEBLET03ORDER-_-Deals &utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEBLET03ORDER&cm_lm=noahbragg@cedar ville.edu
I swapped out my optical drive and put in the SSD using this tutorial, http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Dual +Hard+Drive/13787 Everything seemed to go fine and i had no problems. But when I tried to start up the computer it stayed on a gray screen and a foler with a question mark on it, showed up blanking. I have looked all over for the internet for the answer, I have tried to reset the PRAM but it did nothing. I then tried to select what drive i wanted to boot from by holding the option key when i booted, but when the options came up, SSD or old harddrive did not come up as a way to boot up. There were some internet options to recover but they did not work.
The SSD has nothing on it at this point, but my plan was to boot up using the original HD and then clone it over to the SSD, but ovbiously i cant even find the HD to boot to. I have seen that people are having troubles with booting to their SSD because of the new mavericks update, but i am just trying to boot to my original HD at this point.
I also considered that maybe i possibly damaged the HD cables through static electricty, but when i searched more about it i learned that i should have heard snap or felt a jolt. None of these things happened when i installed the SSD. So i beleive that the hard drive or SSD are not broken in any way.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how i can fix this? Need my computer very badly! thanks in advance.I also forgot to mention that after the first time i tried to boot, it went to the normal screen where it wanted me to put in my apple id password. but the loading wheel was just spinning the whole time. so i turned off the computer and tried again. thats when the question mark folder came up and kept coming up everytime after that.

Windows 2000 won't boot after QuickTime 7.03 installation!!!
Thank your VERY much Apple for messing a company computer!
An Interactive Tuturial we bought used QuickTime, and the sound sounded like the instructor was underwater.
I then went to this website and downloaded QuickTime 7.03, the version you PUSH with ITunes as I at first did not see your snugged away link to the stand-alone download.
Anyways after the download, I went through the installation, which at the end prompted me to reboot.
Well thanks Apple, now the Windows 2000 sp4, system won't boot at all!!!
Not even in safe mode!!! Hangs during or after loading fltmgr.sys
Not even after having bootet to the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM and done an emergency repair!!!
Thank your VERY much!!!
Not only have your installation program caused a working computer to become unoperational for half a day, now it seems we have to reinstall Windows 2000, and ALL programs and their settings which were used on it, causing another half a day or more of loss work!!!
Edited by an Apple HostDue the this recent catastrophic issue and other, with the official Apple Quicktime player, our company have deciced to uninstall all versions of Quicktime, mostly version 6, on our 158 PC's, and install the QuickTime Alternative instead.

Failed boot after enabling devmon service with systemctl
I've recently reinstalled Arch and in trying to get a proper automount solution working I was playing with udevil and devmon. First I disabled and uninstalled ldm, which wasn't working as I wanted. Then installed udevil via pacman. I couldn't find proper instructions at first so I ran:
# systemctl enable [email protected]
and then rebooted. But that didn't work. Then I found something saying to run:
# systemctl enable [email protected]
So I disabled devmon@ and enabled devmon@MYUSERNAME then rebooted.
As the system was shutting down it seemed to get stuck at a part about trying to save a random seed. I walked away for 10 minutes but when I came back nothing had changed so I hit the hard reset button. As it rebooted I could just barely see a whole lot of red [FAILED] signs flashing past my screen. When the screen comes to rest I am greeted by this. Once it gets to this point it doesn't accept any input from the keyboard except for Ctrl-Alt-Del which seems to cleanly reboot.
So far I've booted my arch install cd and run the following on all my partitions along with trying the -p, -r and -a options.
# fsck /dev/sda2
Nothing I ran seemed to produce any output that would suggest there are any problems or anything like an error code 8, which I've read elsewhere is an operational error, whatever that means.
Next I read up about chroot and gave that a go. I chrooted into my arch install and decided to disable the devmon@MYUSERNAME service and uninstall udevil incase that was interfering somehow. I also checked out the journalctl per the screenshots instructions but didn't really understand it. Also not sure on where that log information is stored so I can upload it here.
Any help would be appreciated.
Last edited by greatant (2013-06-11 11:02:07)I've not made any progress with this issue. I've decided it has to do with the random seed, but I can't find any information on it via ArchWiki, searching the forum or google.

Failed boot after update - White screen after bong
Hi, i've an iMac with snow leopard installed.
Yesterday i did a software update that included a reboot.
after that and after the standard boing the system stopped on a white screen.
I've tried using the snow leopard dvd, nothing, pressing "c" with the dvd, inside, nothing, pressing alt, nothing, pressing Shift, success!!!
The system normally logged in but after a new reboot, that i've decided, the system stopped again on the annoying white screen.
I've tried again pressing shift but now anything happened!!!
Help me please!!!
thanksSolved!
I unplugged the ac and waited for 20 second.
After that i rebooted pressing altcmd+pr. After the second boing the system rebooted regularly.
Then i re-installed snow leopard.
Now it's ok,
thanks to everyone. -

[SOLVED] - UDev errors on boot after XFCE4 and goodies installation
I'm getting errors at "Waiting for UDev events to be processed". things are being "terminated by signal 9". I have a feeling that I set something up incorrectly, but I have no idea where to start looking. I think of this mostly as a learning experience, so just point me in the right direction. If I get stuck again, I'll come back to the thread. I'll also post my progress here. I've also done a search on here looking for UDev errors associated with XFCE. I have yet to read all of the threads that turned up, but I'm working on it. Thanks for your help ahead of time.
Last edited by brainard52 (2012-04-18 23:08:07)Well, now I feel silly. I guess it's here for future reference, though. I had a bad udev rule, so I deleted it and we're good now.

Restored 10.6 OS from CD and fails to Boot after Combo upgrade
I have a clean install of Lion on my internal drive and an external clone of the HD from the previous Snow Leopard install. The Clone worked until I updated via the latest auto update. I have App's and other settings to transfer to Lion from this clone so want to get it working so I can ensure all the App's are upgraded to work on Lion or are deleted.
After the external drive failed to boot I reinstalled the system from my Snow Leopard Install CD, not the 24-inch iMac (Mid 2007) restore CD.
I then used Auto updater to install the combo and other updates to 10.6.8 this booted fine until I upgraded Safari 5.1 and Java - the last items that came up on the software updater. Upon restart, the boot failed in the last portion of the boot and at this point the Apple emblem went away and the round circle with diaginoal line apeared.
On starting with the option key down, the clone disk 10.6.8 shows as being available, along with the internal Drive, for booting.
Starting with "command + S" gets through to the last line of the process then states "waiting on Root"
When compaired to a Snow OS that boots OK it is the last line of code before the curser is ready for entering a command.
Can anyone tell me what to look for or how to repair this error so that I can get my data across to Lion. ThanksWell, in case anyone else has a similar problem I managed to fix the system by the following process:
I reinstalled 10.6.0 from the retail Snow Leopard CD. The drive Booted OK but I needed to be upgraded to 10.6.8 to use the migration tool so I then upgraded using the Software Update utility. Boot failed again at this point and could not be fixed by anything I did.
I then reinstalled 10.6.0 from the CD to try again, but the HD would not boot this time around.
I downloaded CleanApp by Synium Software (http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/) on a commendation from the famous eBook, "Take Control of installing Lion" by Joe Kissell of TidBits. I used this from my Lion HD to remove all orphan files, PPC files and Apps, and other junk. Snow Leapard still not Booting after repairs by various disk repair utilities including Apples.
I Booted from my internal HD using Lion and ran SuperDuper to make a new Clone of the failed HD on a second external HD. Took a day and a night to run while I was at work, but the new clone would not boot at this stage so I ran SuperDuper again using the "Smart Update Backup" option. This just adds changed files or missing files to the clone. At the end of this process I had a running Clone that would boot on 10.6.0.
I Booted from the second Clone and used the Software Update utility then to up grade in the two stages the Auto system used to bring my OS up to 10.6.8. This was successful and I had a Bootable Snow Leopard with no old Apps from which to Migrate my data. -
"printer installer" window shows up at every boot after installing printer
After installing successfully a Samsung printer, everytime I boot Mountain Lion there is a "printer installer" window shows up.
Any way to get rid of this?
Regards,
VincentI've come across someone who had this before - they'd forgotten to take the installer disc out of the optical drive so it ran its installer at every boot. Any chance that's it?

Stuck on boot after New Installation
Hi!
I've removed Ubuntu and installed Arch and it can't boot after installation. I hangs up after:

I have normal BIOS(not UEFI), and two discs: /dev/sda is SSD with Arch and /dev/sdb is HDD with Windows 8...
Tried playing with fstab, but it was still stucking. Then tried reinstalling, but it's still hanging...

Last edited by Flanders (2013-02-17 17:42:58)Remove quiet from the kernel command line so that you get as much information as possible.
You only have the one partition for Arch, right? The fstab is complete?
Look in /etc/default/grub and select the most basic, debugging-friendly options you can. E.g. make sure recovery entries are enabled etc.

Hi,
I have recently updated my iTunes to the latest version in order to sync music onto my new ipod shuffle. However after a successful installation the application does not launch or open? There are no error messages. The application is just unresponsive.
I have already checked the compatibility with Safari, my operating system and checked my firewall is not blocking it - all is fine.
Does anyone have any other resolutions?
Many thanksHi Carolyn,
Thank you for your time and response. The trouble is I am unable to launch iTunes? I have restarted my macbook air a number of times to try and initiate the application but the issue persists and the application remains unresponsive. Will not launch?
Thanks
