Failed disc

Hi,
Waking up this morning after leaving my white 2008 13" MacBook running last night, something had gone terribly wrong.
The Mac was frozen, and after rebooting I just got a few clicks from the HDD when booting up, and after a while a folder with a question mark on it which I assume means the the disc couldn't be found or is unreadable.
I took the disc out and inserted it again to make sure it was connected OK with no success.
I have had power issues with a completely dead battery (instant death if power cord is removed). With a little imagination it does sound like the disc tries do spin up but fails due to power issues. I've seen this before on computers lacking sufficient power (think 240W of PSU and too big video card).
So now to the question:
How do I access the BIOS-equivalent to check out if the Mac recognizes that there is a disc in there at all?

I have still to locate the disc, but I'll do this ASAP and let you know ...
I didn't know there is no BIOS in a Mac prior to this, so at least I gained some knowledge.
The whole disc crash have give me some sad side affects, so if anyone cares for reading about my disc crash-related miseries, go ahead and read about my iTunes issue ...

  • Alert for failed disc in RAID array

is there a third party software that will alert when a disc in a raid array is degraded or failed? right now, i have to open raid utility to see this. i would like to get a small alert so i can replace the disc quickly.
    any ideas welcome.
    thanks

I think there is something like <aa href=http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?arch=all&keywords=RAID&os=macosx> "RAID monitor"
    ( not rocket science )
    Search http://www.macupdate.com
(as well as the usually news, tip, sites) on reports of how well it WORKS and for sending email alerts etc even.
There should be entries in system log of repeated I/O requests and failures, and look for attempts to reassign bad blocks as well.

  • Compressor fails, disc full message

    10.5, Intel dt,
Got 3 small 2gb 10 min movies, QT, 1080i 1440x1080 ( anamorphic ). made a custom preset to simply de-interlace the movies and make them progressive, nothing else. The destination is an internal disc with 179gb free. The boot disc has 10 gb free and I've set compressor's presets to NOT copy files to cluster during processing yet compressor fails the job each time even trying one movie at a time, saying my HD is almost full.
Cant work it out? Any ideas?
    Peter

If your system HD has less than 10% free space it could contribute to odd operating issues.
Click on the preset and look at the far left box near the top of the inspector window. How big does it say the file should be? What was this preset made from?
Could the preset you started with be a factor?

  • Failed disc burn

"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
I am getting this message when trying to burn to Maxell CD-R 80min 700MB cd's. I have slowed the burn speed down to 1x, and I guess I can experiment with burn speeds, but I've never had this problem before. Any comments on Maxell CD's? Any suggestions for best "Preferred Burn Speed" setting?

Burning a data CD is not a problem. It seems to be some kind of function involving the brand of CD and the burn speed. It just stinks to drop $10-$20 on a stack of CD's to find that they don't work, or at least not very well. Also disturbing is having one brand work and not another.
(I guess I'm still stinging from the iTunes "upgrade" (v7?) that caused my faithful iMac G3 graphite to loose the ability to burn CD's altogether. I love my mac's, but Apple tests my loyalty when they make decent older machines obsolete. Now they are making my iBook G4 obsolete. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!)
I should not need to spend money on other software (e.g. Roxio) to do something as simple as burn a CD in the bragged about iTunes. $1,500 ought to buy me that.

Had trouble posting entire messaage on first attempts. Hopes this works for you. Pardon if this is a duplication.
I got an Error 4261 message on my computer some months ago while attempting to backup my iTunes music ---about Dec. 2006. Hopefully, the problem is now solved. This was a difficult and time consuming issue to resolve. I shall provide some details of this resolution (worked for me) as I know some others are having the same problem. I hope to post this message to others with 4261 errors.
I have a Dimension E510 computer bought in 2006. I am using Windows XP. My CD ROM burner is as follows: HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GWA4164B. I wonder if you have the same type CD ROM.
At first, several thoughts came to mind. Google? Never listen to music again. Invest in a sledge hammer? I decided to try and fix the problem and would work on this for the next eight months. Recently, I decided that this problem had to go away. I tried various things to correct the problem often with technical assistance as the following indicate:
Changed copy speed//Did a restore on my computer (no help)// reversed restore
    Updated iTunes files//Did virus scans
Contacted a company techie—Discovered my warranty was still good. Cdrom driver was updated. We got the iTunes program to copy a disk. Problem solved?? Time passes.
The problem reoccurs. I contacted a techie again. He was able to get another program to copy on the cdrom I was using to copy iTunes music. I was told that I should contact an iTunes rep. $$. (One can save files (ex. photos) to a new file created on the desk top and copy them to a cdrom---a test method used.)
I read suggestions about updating my BIOS and chipset on the iTunes message board. Not being a techie I wasn’t so sure about this. Time passes.
    I didn’t buy music.
I read messages saying that I should backup my iTunes music.
Called techie again. Updated cdrom driver. We were able to copy data using the same cdrom used for the iTunes copy. (Again this was not a fix. It was indicative of an intermittent cdrom failure occurring over time, and one manifesting itself in iTunes.) I asked him to try to copy another. Amazingly, this copy failed. Something was wrong. Now we’re getting somewhere. Techie eliminated select startup files to try to determine source of a software error, if one. This did not fix the problem.
Techie deleted a couple registry files. (I don’t like deleting registry files because they serve a valuable purpose, but I’ not a techie. Later I would have to do a file repair on iTunes and a photo program. iTunes has a repair feature which was on my desktop—a holdover from a previous attempt to fix things with an iTunes update. I ran this without harming my music files, and this repaired the program.)
Techie said I may have a problem with my current brands of CD-R disks. I bought and tried other brands---four all total. This did not work.
I happened to attempt to copy some pictures as I was interested in having some developed. To my surprise, my computer stopped the copy citing an error with the copy process. The problem now manifested itself with another software program. Heretofore, I could successfully copy pictures using the same cdrom but not iTunes music.
I called the techie again. I told him what I had done and new error in copying other files to the cdrom. We attempted to use other programs to copy music and picture files on the cdrom. (My thinking is, if they had worked, then the cdrom was OK, and the problem was a software problem and likely involving iTunes.) We could not get any software programs to copy files to the cdrom in question. This was a clear indication that the cdrom was defective. We likely used up ten CD-R disks in these latest attempts.
Looking back, there was a subtle indication of a problem with the cdrom. There was a problem with one of the songs I had copied to a new disk (No. 24 of 24 songs on a disk). The song was copied with errors. This shouldn’t happen.
The company replaced cdrom free of charge the next morning. Wow!
I tried the new cdrom and began burning iTunes music right away. No 4261 error message. I also copied pictures to the same cdrom without any error messages. I also successfully used other brands of CD-R disks.
Replacing the cdrom on my computer fixed the 4261 error on my computer. I hope something here will be of help to some of you who have the same problem.
As I mentioned earlier I had problems with iTunes and a photo program after cdrom installation but fixed them. I also experienced problems with Windows Media Player and Roxio/Sonic. They didn’t want to recognize the new drive (E:). Restore made things worst so I undid this. I spoke to a tech again about these issues as I wasn’t certain of the scope/nature of problem. We updated both programs with updates from company support pages. This seems to have fixed the problem. Point made here was the need to keep files updated with the latest and greatest. Having had Windows ME in the past, I was reluctant to change my files too often. Now I have no choice but to do this. Many thanks to Techie.
The thought in my mind now is whether performing updates and specifically on Windows Media Player would have fixed the error to begin with. I don’t know, but I did run an update on my iTunes, and there are no updates for my photo program . Looking back I would have tried the updates first before I replaced the cdrom.
    Kindest regards. 08/13/07

    Thanks Sebastian for your input.
yes. my lan2 is used for Cluster_interconnect which is having subnet 255.255.255.240.
Below are IPs used for RAC
    Public
    Node1: 10.10.1.173/255.255.240.0
    Node2: 10.10.1.174/255.255.240.0
    Private
    Node1: 10.10.16.50/255.255.255.240
    Node2: 10.10.16.51/255.255.255.240
    Virtual
    Node1: 10.10.1.191/255.255.240.0
    Node2: 10.10.1.192/255.255.240.0
    SCAN (Defined in DNS)
    10.10.1.193/255.255.240.0
    10.10.1.194/255.255.240.0
    10.10.1.195/255.255.240.0
As you said, I will scrap GI Software again & will try with 255.255.255.0.
I Believe this Redundant Interconnect and ora.cluster_interconnect.haip present in 11.2.0.2.0 Version.
    Oracle says:
Redundant Interconnect without any 3rd-party IP failover technology (bond, IPMP or similar) is supported natively by Grid Infrastructure starting from 11.2.0.2. Multiple private network adapters can be defined either during the installation phase or afterward using the oifcfg. Oracle Database, CSS, OCR, CRS, CTSS, and EVM components in 11.2.0.2 employ it automatically.
Grid Infrastructure can activate a maximum of four private network adapters at a time even if more are defined. The ora.cluster_interconnect.haip resource will start one to four link local HAIP on private network adapters for interconnect communication for Oracle RAC, Oracle ASM, and Oracle ACFS etc.
Grid automatically picks link local addresses from reserved 169.254.*.* subnet for HAIP, and it will not attempt to use any 169.254.*.* address if it's already in use for another purpose. With HAIP, by default, interconnect traffic will be load balanced across all active interconnect interfaces, and corresponding HAIP address will be failed over transparently to other adapters if one fails or becomes non-communicative. .
The number of HAIP addresses is decided by how many private network adapters are active when Grid comes up on the first node in the cluster . If there's only one active private network, Grid will create one; if two, Grid will create two; and if more than two, Grid will create four HAIPs. The number of HAIPs won't change even if more private network adapters are activated later, a restart of clusterware on all nodes is required for new adapters to become effective.
In my Setup, I am having Teaming for NIC's for Public & Private Interface. So I am thinking to break teaming of NICs because HAIP internally searching for next available NIC & not getting as all 4 are already in used with OS level NIC teaming.
My only Concern is, as I am going to change subnet for the Private IPs, should I change Private IP address ????
    Thanks for the Support...
    Regards,
    Manish

    Hi Guys,
For Typical OR Advanced Grid Installation (GUI), all pre-requisites are failing on both nodes, like memory, swap, node reachability, groups, user & lot more.....

  • IDVD ejects disc during burning process of Dual Layer DVD

    Hi,
I am trying to burn a 3hr iMovie project of a recent holiday trip. Due to its size, it therefore needs to go on a Dual Disc DVD. I intend to burn 8 copies, one for each member of the holiday.
I successfully burned the first disc in iDVD, however since then, the disc prematurely ejects at the "Multiplexing and Burning" stage, (At the 'Writing Lead In' stage within this) ,usually with 31mins remaining
I am burning at 4x , I have 27GB free space and I am using AONE Plus DVDs. I have read many discussions on here about buying Verbatim DVD-R's which i can do, but with the first dvd burning successfully, I would prefer to try other options before I commit to purchase..
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me
    Max

    Hi again,
I purchased a pack of Verbatim DVD-R DL Discs, tried the iDVD route and it ejected at the burning and multiplexing stage again. Not only this, but after burning and trying that same failed disc again, it actually contains part of the project, so this disc is now unusable.
After this I went the Disc Utility option as you advised and successfully got to the end until the 'closing session' section. Here, it continues to load and says it is 'closing the session' and i can hear my Disc drive spinning away, stopping, then starting to spin again (this continues to happen forever and ever)
Any suggestions at this stage would be great as i'm truly at a lost cause now..
    Thanks

  • IDvd Problems - ejects disc blank

    Hi
I have been trying loads of different solutions to this problem. Basically each time my computer gets to multiplexing and burning it ejects the disc (blank still) and stays on that screen for hours! It is so frustrating. I have tried burning the movie as a disc image and burning that through disk utility and it comes up: could not burn disk. I have tried a different disk and it doesnt move from 'closing session' PLEASE HELP!

I am really getting desperate about this.
The ASM persmissions are on both nodes the same, so this should not be the problem and i can not find any problem on the network.
The log files of the healthy node do not say anything about the node which does not startup now, the last log entry was from 6 months ago, when i shut that node down. There seems to be no communication between the two nodes now.
I tried to manually start the ora.cssd but somehow ora.gipcd just does not start and i can not find the problem.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks  and time machine backups keep failing.

I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and now I find my time machine backups keep failing. I first tried turning off the power to the time machine then turning it on again and I managed to get one complete backup but that took over 20 hours to complete.
The time machine  backup mode never seems to get beyond " preparing backup" then showing the message "backing up failed, disc already in use"
The time machine backup worked fine before I upgraded, is there a way round this problem or will I have to go through reloading the time machine as if it were a new piece of equipment?
My wife's iMac is still on mountain lion 10.8.5  and the backups on the same Time Machine work fine.
Any help would be gratefully received
    Greg

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem.
MBP 2011 running 10.9 named "ebook"
MacMini running 10.8.5 server with TM share
everything works fine UNTIL for some reason the MBP is interrupted during a TM backup ...
After that I get the disk already in use error !
Rebooting the MBP wont help, but I narrowed the problem down ...
Looking on the Mini server I noticed :
    - the TM backup user stays connected over AFP, even after several hours of inactivity and a couple of reboots of the MBP. Killing the AFP connection works, But problem stil continues !
    - looking on the MBP with "lsof | grep ebook" showed me that the SparseBundles were still in use by the AFP process ... Using the Server control panel and restarting AFP solved that ...
After restarting the AFP process the remote TM Backup started to work again !
A couple of days later, the same problem occurred again, fixed it by this work around ...
I hope there will be a more permanent solotiun for this !

  • Best DVD discs to use (UK)

I have had a Macbook Pro for the last few months and been successfully burning to DVD-R (HP brand), but finished the stack and bought some Tesco DVD-R discs: NONE of these will burn in the same drive: they just go in, shuffle around a bit and then get ejected: they are not even recognised as being there: however they work fine in my PC's DVD drive and in our DVD recorder.
So I go to another store and ask for DVDs that WILL work with Apple - "can't tell you if they will" so I bought some TDKs: haven't tried them yet.
Which discs do others find work best?
The drive is supposed to be compatible with a lot of different DVD formats.

I have been burning CDs for 8 years and DVDs for 6 years.
I have invariably bought the cheapest discs available, often supermarket or photo store "own" brands and have rarely had a problem.
On the very few occasions I have suffered a failed disc I could never be sure whether it was the disc's fault or my burner's.
From what information I can glean it appears that my (almost non-existent) failure rate is much lower than that of people using premium brands.
P.S. I hope David's findings don't apply to me as I have an unopened pack of 100 Memorex DVDs which I will be using in the near future when my stock of Kodak discs (bought from Tesco for less than 15 pence each) runs out.
I will keep you posted as I am now viewing the prospect with a little trepidation!

  • Folder with exclamation still exists

    hi!
my ipod is a 60gb photo.after i downloaded the 2005-09-23 updater and clicked on the icon to update the message'firmware failed. disc write error' appeared. since this option didn't work I tried the restore option that also didn't work and the same message appeared.now my screen has this folder with a exclamation which won't go away and the ipod dosen't budge.i've tried everything including toggling with the hold switch everything the manual says and the online support says but still nothing works.i even downloaded the updater twice but the same message appears.please help someone. the battery is also charged .the ipod's backlight also dosen't light up. the display also has changed.and at the time of music or photo transfer it displays a -36 and -5 error respectively

Call Apple or, even better, go to an Apple store.
