Failed External Storage

My Iomega Ultramax external disk storage has failed with I believe a power supply problem. As this unit is out of warranty, I have replaced it. Here's the question, if I can get a suitable cable and attach directly to the two disks that were installed in the Ultramax, connect the other end to a USB port, I should be able to mount and read the contents of the disks. If I then pointed Time Machine at these drives I should be able to recover the data that is on there.
I'm just looking for support that this procedure is valid and should work?

I take it you can't get a new/replacement power supply?
But yes, if you can get OSX to recognize the disks, and their directories aren't damaged (do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) via Disk Utility, in your Applications/Utilities folder if they are), you should be able to recover the data. How you do that depends on what the data is:
If these are *source disks* (backed-up by Time Machine), when you get a new drive and want to restore to it from the backups, give the new disk a different name first. Then restore the entire drive to the new location. To see and restore from the backups for a drive that's no longer connected, see item #E3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting post at the top of this forum.
Once you've located the folder representing the failed disk in your backups, select it, click the "gear" icon in the Finder window's toolbar, then select the +Restore <item> to ..+ option. Then specify the new drive as the destination.
Note that your next TM backup will almost certainly back up the entire contents of the new drive. You cannot prevent this. That will, of course, take a lot of space on your TM drive, so you might want to delete all backups of the old disk, via the procedure in item 12 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
If these are *TM backups,* you can't copy them to a new drive in the normal fashion and have them continue to work with Time Machine. You can use the Restore tab of Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to duplicate one entire disk or partition to another entire disk/partition. (You can also use the SuperDuper! app). This will preserve the unusual structure of the backups, and TM should continue backing-up to them as if nothing had happened.
Three cautions: First, be sure you format the new disk correctly (see item #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Second, you must check the +Erase destination+ box when you do the Restore, even if the destination is already empty (so you'll erase the directory that's on even an empty disk).
Third, this procedure will rename the destination partition the same as the source, so immediately upon completion, rename one of them, and change or re-select the new one via TM Preferences.

  • DB2 / Red Hat 5 : Backup to External Storage Failed

    Dear gurus,
    I've SAP ECC 6 running on DB2 9.7 FP2, RHEL 5.0
We can backup to internal disk, but when configuring backup to external storage (Maxtor Shared Storage II), there's this error.
I mount the external storage using cifs, with correct owner and permission (db2<sid> :  db<sid>adm with 777 permission.)
The shared storage is: //192.168.1.8/mhp with mount point /mnt/mhp
When I backup using DB13 to /mnt/mhp, the file is created and the size continually grows constantly.
But when the backup is about to finish, the file then disappears, and DB13 returns "Database backup failed"
I see the db2diag.log, and here's the entry:
    [db2diag.log|http://snipt.org/pYx/]
The message is not too clear for me.
Does anyone happen to come across the same problem as me?
    Thanks for your help.
    Best Regards,

    Dear gurus,
If it is plain file like copy / move command to the storage, it can be done successfully.
I can also 'touch filename1' there. But for DB13 or DB2 backup command, it failed.
Markus, there's no particular technical things. We just choose cifs.
I've tried NFS but it said things like "Connection Refused" when I tried to mount -a.
I've tried also in different server, and it actually give the same result. So I think it's not SAMBA.
May I know what you mean by mapping the user?
I can make shared folder in the maxtore webgui management, and create user to own that folder.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Apple TV - sync with external storage?

I bought an Apple TV about 2 weeks and have been pretty happy with it. I have lots of TV shows saved on an external drive so as not to completely fill up my iMac. The external drive is connected to my iMac at all times.
Is there a way that I can sync Apple TV to this external storage device? Or watch TV shows from the external hard drive without moving them back to the iMac and then syncing with the Apple TV? Or is there a way I can leave TV shows on the Apple TV without also copying them to my iMac? My Apple TV is 160gb so there must be a way of using that memory without jamming up my iMac.
I've looked in the manual but haven't found an answer to this situation.
Thanks for any ideas or assistance.

Next thing to appreciate is how iTunes stores files.
The iTunes library, usually called iTunes, contains various sub-folders and files.
Some of these files contain the library database, artwork etc.
There'll be an iTunes Music folder which contains the media copied into iTunes on import.
There may be old library database backups, and a folder for iPhone apps if you have one.
There may be other folders for other sorts of user.
Is there a way that I can sync Apple TV to this external storage device?
Not without the files being known to iTunes - all communication with AppleTV in terms of local network file transfers works through iTunes.
Or watch TV shows from the external hard drive without moving them back to the iMac and then syncing with the Apple TV?
    Yes, this is possible.
When you import a CD it will automatically store in the iTunes Music folder. You can see where file are by selecting Show in Finder after a right click on the entry in iTunes.
If you import a file from somewhere other than CD however there is a Preference under Advanced>General Tab which decides if a copy is placed in the iTunes Music folder or not. If you deselect the copy option iTunes simply stores a reference to the file not the file itself.
So, if you deselect copy you could just drag the files from the external drive onto an iTunes window and they'll be available for syncing/streaming but still live on the external drive.
This is probably your simplest option. There is a keyboard shortcut which from memory is the option key which will temporarily not copy an added file when dragged to iTunes.
Or is there a way I can leave TV shows on the Apple TV without also copying them to my iMac?
Using the do not copy option in iTunes will achieve this with files on the external drive not on the iMac.
There is no manual drag and drop type way of filling AppleTV with media which is a shame if you don't have the external drive.
You can in fact delete the file in the itunes Music folder manually from Finder and this will not remove them from the database - iTunes will complain if you try to play them or stream them but if synced to AppleTv you can play them from there. I do not recommend this approach, and you must not delete the file entry from iTunes or it will then also delete from AppleTV.
My Apple TV is 160gb so there must be a way of using that memory without jamming up my iMac.
The 160GB is mainly indtended to allow you to have more stuff on AppleTV so that youd odn't need itunes running all the time, or perhaps ifyour network doesn't allow smooth steaming.
It is not a backup and must not be regarded as external storage - many people assume it's storage and then lose their files when their computer's hard drive or external fails if they have no backup. Sorry to repeat this but it's important.
I've looked in the manual but haven't found an answer to this situation.
It's not particularly detailed is it.
    Hope that helps.
There are some other options to consider too.

  • Best tool to archive data from DW to external storage.

    Hi,
I want to archive the data of couple of tables in DW at regular interval to some external storage. This archived file will be loaded in relational table again for read only processing later when required. These table's data has got retention period so data gets deleted after retention period. The table is partitioned on ACTION_DATE column.
I don't have access to filesystem on DW servers so will prefer to avoid to store any file on filesystem.
    We are using Oracle 10.2.
Following are three options I can think of:
    1) Use exp / imp tools to get data from required tables. I will be running this script daily so I can take data of one partition only (feature supported by exp/imp). I will want to import data in DW to some other table (table with different name to original table but same schema) when required sometime later for processing because of retention period issue. But imp do not support this option. Or at least I do not know of any .
    2) Use expdb/impdb tools. It will help as it is faster to exp/imp and also it has REMAP_TABLE feature which can help me to load data in table with different name. But the problem with this approach is impdb/expdb requires/stores file on server (in this case DW servers ). As mentioned I am not preferring for this solution. If we have a convenient way to get the data on client side and put back on server when impdb has to be executed this option can be used. Or some other approach using expdb/impdb tools.
    3) Use spool /sqlloader. Haven't explored a lot about this option yet. But am concerned about efficiency of this solution. Also the complexity of implementation with this approach. Spool will give required data in csv format and it will be loaded later using sqlloader.
Please help me with selecting an approach here. Also if anyone has a better solution for the above problem please do mention about the same.
    Thanking in advance.

If all the photos  etc. are on your iPhone, you can back them up after you get your SSD going. If there is more in the backup on your failing HD, you can try copying it manually.
    TimLitch wrote:
I assume just syncing with the new SSD installed will wipe the phone..?
Not necessarily. In iTunes Preferences>Devices you can check the box "Prevent iPod, iPhone, iPad etc. from syncing automatically."
Then you can back up iPhone to your computer or iCloud.
In Internet Recovery you are given options -- to erase the hd or ssd and install Mavericks, or restore from Time Machine.
Before you do it you should make a note of your Superduper registration number in case you have to download it again.

  • Single best external storage solution for Mac Pro & MacBook Pro ...?

    Hello,
I'm still waiting for the Mac Pro delivery I have around me something like four external hard drives from different vendors and different sizes and all containing important data ... it is really a mess, cables, lack of redundancy, etc.
I wanted to replace all these once and for all by a single elegant long-lasting and reliable solution to combine with my new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. The best I could find was OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 8.0TB containing four internal HDD in double RAID with multiple possible setups: RAID 0 and RAID 1, RAID 10 configurations:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEQX2T8.0S/
Looks like an excellent choice for the only one external storage solution! does anyone has experience with this model? are there better contenders?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Best regards,
    Giovanni

    Giovanni,
I have the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 (6 TB) external HD array in a Raid 5 configuration (as received from OWC). I have found it to be excellent when connected to my Mac Pro using a PCI SATA card and the SATA output on the Elite-AL Pro Qx2. The speed of the system under Raid 5 easily supports all but uncompressed high definition video, and the system came with Prosoft's Data Backup software which does an excellent job of backing up other external drives installed on my Mac Pro.
I highly recommend the Qx2 and think you will find it is a good single source solution to providing you with reliable and safe storage for your data. With Raid 5 if one of the HD's in the Qx2 fails, you simply remove it and allow the system to rebuild the data when you insert a new HD. Thus unless two HD's fail simultaneously (high unlikely) you are protected against data loss. Note also that your Mac Pro does not have to be left on while the Qx2 is rebuilding.

  • Using external storage for purchased movies

Hello Apple TV users. I was about to pull the trigger and buy Apple TV, but I'm not clear on something.
If I use Apple TV to purchase HD movies from the iTunes Store (I'm guessing they come in at +/-6GB each, is the only storage option for these movies the Apple TV's internal storage? 40GB is nothing. 160GB is not much.
I understand using Apple TV storage as a cache for rentals, but for movies that I buy, I'd like to be able to keep things on a 500GB or 1TB drive (which I already use for iTunes storage anyway.
There's a USB port on the Apple TV, but I read in another post that this is a service port that only Apple can access...
    Any guidance much appreciated.

Currently you can only rent HD movies from iTunes, you can't purchase to keep, so unless you want to download several HD movies with a view to a very intensive bout of film viewing it's probably not an issue, though it may affect the amount of synced content on your AppleTv.
There's a USB port on the Apple TV, but I read in another post that this is a service port that only Apple can access...
Correct - service port only - no reason it couldn't be enabled in a future software update but unlikely in my opinion. Would love to be proved wrong on this!
Personally, I think the trend will be towards centralised home media servers, and networked 'thin' clients for display with small amounts of onboard storage. I would love an "AppleTV Air" type device with solid state storage - should run cooler, use less power, and be less prone to hardware failure without a mechanical drive.
Even in it's current form I could see me using Apple TVs for years to come but the hard drives will eventually fail - a solid state drive AppleTv would have more longevity.
If they enabled USB to allow attaching external storage that would be the icing on the cake (more codecs, faster processor, and higher bitrate playback would be the lit candles!).

  • Synching iPod to external storage drive

Ihave an external storage drive where I am storing my music files. I installed the ipod software on the external drive successfully. However, when I attempt to synch my ipod, it starts, but stops imediately and fails to update the songs located iTunes onto my ipod. Tried everything possible including resetting the ipod and still I get the same problem

I would suggest you keep the library only on the external drive. Put the software and its itl and artwork files on your local drive.

  • Aperture 3.5 + Mavericks external storage problems

Aperture 3.5 + Mavericks external storage problems
After upgrading to 3.5 and Mavericks, all my projects referencing files stored on NAS show blurry or black and not responding to edit commands. Sometimes Aperture crashes. The projects/photos were okay before upgrade. Also new projects on NAS show blurry or black or fail totally to import photos. If I move the same photos to the local drive, everything is just fine.
I am using NFS to access the NAS.
Reading through this forum I found some reports of similar behavior from people storing photos on USB external drives.
This seems to be only when referencing files located on an external drive. No problems if files are copied to the Aperture library.
    Any similar experience?

Referenced files on a NAS was always an gray area. While it worked for most users most of the time it wasn;t clear that Apple supported the configuration.
The Apple documents on Aperture and non-locally attached drives can be read in a number of different ways. Of course the library definitely had to be on a local drive (and even here some users reported success with the library on a NAS) but referenced masters were never explicitly mentioned either way.
Most users had success with the originals on a NAS but even with earlier version of Aperture and the OS there were always the occasional report of problems. When push-came-to -shove if moving the referenced originals to a local drive fixed the problems there wasn;t much else that could be done.
Since the release of 3.5 and Mavericks it does appear that referenced originals on a NAS do not work at all in most cases.  The best we can do here, being just users like yourself, is to suggest you contact Apple and try to get through to the Aperture team and see if you can get a definitive answer.
As for problems with referenced originals on locally connected drives, I'm not aware of any widespread problems. In the few cases I've seen it has come down to some issue with the OP's system.
Having your whole workflow and setup knocked out from under you like this is really bad, unfortunately there isn't much anyone here can do for this problem.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Using a Mac Pro G5 as external storage

So I recently bought a power mac g5 tower for $35 (I cant believe i got it for that cheap and It runs perfectly!) but now that i have it Im trying to find a use for it since i already have a mac pro 8 core and a new macbook pro. So im trying to find some way to put it to use, since it is a power mac im not gonna run any programs on it even though i have thought of running snow leopard on. I was talking to a friend and he said I could set it up so i can use it as external storage for my mac pro but im not sure if this is possible since it is a power mac and my mac pro is intel based. Could i set it up as a External storage unit and use it as like i would any other external hard drive you can buy? Im sorry if this doesnt make sense.
And just one little side note my friends company is selling a ton of their Xserve G5 cluster nodes and i was wondering if you could use these to create a computer cluster or use them for storage also.
    Thanks for your help,
    John
Oh and if anyone has any other cool ideas of what i can use it for im open to any ideas

You can't run Snow Leopard on it. Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor. The newest you can run is Leopard 10.5.8
Try turning on sharing and see if you see the drives from your Mac Pro.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC (Windows Vista Home Basic) that uses an external storage device to store the files to a new PC (Windows 7 Starter) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with the new iTunes 11.  How can I accomplish this successfully?    What folder does iTunes use to store the data in?  I've tried several things.  Home Sharing caused duplicates but not all songs or apps transfered.  It is a large library! I've tried just setting the path in the Advanced Tab of iTunes preferences of the new computer with the external drive connected the same as the path when the external drive is connected to the old computer.  This was the best solution so far but still a few artists missing and some apps. Any suggestions?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.
See also: Make a split library portable.
