Failed Leopard Installation, now Tiger wont boot

I recently tried to install Leopard onto my MacBook and during installation an error message came up talking about running a preupgrade script and it told me to contact tech support. so i tried to quit the installation and reboot normally but when I clicked on Quit Installation the spinning pinwheel came up and stayed like that for over an hour. So I restarted with the power button.
It started to load like normal (the chime, gray screen w/apple, etc.) but then it went to a black screen with white text where you enter commands (reminds me of MS DOS). What do I do? I need any help I can get! Thanks.

Scott,
thank you so much for your help. but looks like it is my HD afterall ):
...somehow leopard installation revealed a "boot" problem....or created it?
as an alternative to getting the install disc in: Applecare told me to hold option key down after turning on the mac, mac HD symbol did appear so then I could insert the install disc, selected it and went to disk utilities:
He suggested I partition the drive first, to repartition it back together later, before trying a last resort of zeroing the drive which would take a long time.
When partitioning failed because it said "resource busy" and then first attempt to erase HD selecting the one with numbers failed with the same "resource busy" 3rd attempt to erase Mac HD did work.
however this tier 2 applecore person was concerned that even if I zeroed the drive there was something wrong with my "boot" and then after confirming with me I didn't have boot camp installed, told me my Macbook pro needed to be sent in for the HD to be replaced.
since having enough GB is my main problem (with final cut installed) I have a related question:
To add GB with a new HD? since mine is only a 100 GB?
I was told authorized apple dealer can do this (but not apple) and applecare will still cover me (except for the bigger HD itself)
do you think it advisable to go for more GB?
for the next 2 months, I need my macbookpro for work so I am tempted to let apple replace this 100gb HD and do it later when I am going on vacation
Also JUST TO BE ABSOLUTELY SURE this leopard works and there aren't any other problems with my laptop and apple can't blame me and my buying a new bigger HD...
(: silver lining is that now apple will install leopard for me! yeah I think!
do I want this leopard afterall? or wait for a cheta or whatever is next!
thanks again!

  • Failed XP installation, now won't boot OS X

Hi, I just got my Mac Pro and am experiencing problems after trying to set up a second partition with Windows XP. On top of the 500GB HD, I installed a Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB internal drive, which I had planned to install Windows on. After a failed attempt to format & partition the drive with Windows XP (I kept getting a black screen with "The following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll"), I gave up on XP's problems, restarted in OS X and deleted the Windows partition through Boot Camp Manager.
Now when I boot up my computer, I'm greeted with a black screen and a blinking cursor. That is unless I hold down Option and select "Mac OS X". However, that is going to get old after a while. I'm guessing it's still trying to boot up Windows even though it was supposedly deleted. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    MDew1:
    Please try the following:
    1. Boot into Leopard as you do with holding down the Option Key.
    2. In Leopard go to *System Preferences*
    3. Under System select *Startup Disk*
    4. Highlight *Mac HD* and Restart
See if the above works for you and that you no longer have to hold down the Option key during the subsequent startups.

  • Failed Leopard installation, now just show apple logo over white screen.

I just received OS X Leopard (not the new one, I'll buy it tomorrow) in order to upgrade to the new OS X snow Leopard. During the installation (took over 30 minutes to calculate the installation time that it was supposed to be 2 hr 49 min, I don't know if that's the average installation time). After about an hour of installation appeard a big yellow triangle (warning) over a message box saying something like "Installer couldn't verify 'Essentials' on the DVD, please contact the software manofacturer or try to install later". After restart the iMac it never rebooted, just shows the apple logo with the spinning circle, I left it that way last night while I was searching on the net for some help and iMac kept doing the same over 24hrs (apple logo over white screen). After reading on the forums I reboot with command+s and these are the two messages that are coming once and again in an endless loop:
    First Message:

The number [2228] goes to [2229] then [2230] to the fist msg again, then [2231] to the second msg,.... in an endless loop.
Before this I have never experienced any trouble with this iMac. I don't know what to do now because it doesn't reboot and I don't have any boot disk besides TechTool Deluxe.

"Ok. But once I got the replacement disk the iMac will boot with the installation disk even though it now stills "gone" and unable to boot by itself? I mean, the installation disk is a bootable disk by itself?"
Read what you wrote and clarify it. You got the replacement disk? Yes or no. Yes the installer disk is a bootable disk. How else did you try to install Leopard?

So lately I decided I was tired of Tiger, and decided I would upgrade to Leopard.  Well I made the mistake of erasing the hard drive before I made sure it would work. Well now like the installer was before it failed. And now when I boot I get the normal finder/question mark flashing folder. I also found a power Mac g4 that needs a new operating system. It's running 9.2. It's going to my grandma as a gift. I really need help.

I think you'll need to find a Retail 10.5 Disc.

        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

  • Created 3 partitions on new Mac Mini, deleted one, and now Bootcamp wont boot anymore! Need help please!

Here's my dilemma.  I have a new Mac Mini - a week old.  I installed Windows 7 on it using Mac's Bootcamp assistant.  I then set up and configured my Windows 7 world and everything worked fine.  No issues logging in between Lion or Win7 via the restart/option key procedure.  Well, yesterday I split my Mac HD partition one more time to create a third partition (was created as an "extra", e.g. possible future partition for another operating system).  After creating it, I then decided that I didn't really need it.  So I deleted it in Disk Utility and attempted to drag the Mac HD partition line downward so as to "fill in the gap" and reclaim the lost hardrive space.  It seemed as if I could reclaim about 1 gig or so, but I figured...oh well.
Well, the Mac HD partition seems to work just fine, but now I've noticed that I can't get into the Bootcamp partition anymore.  It wont boot.  If I try to verify the partition [doesn't even give me "repair" as an option), then it fails and gives me the following error message: "verify volume failed.  invalid request."  When I go to the Startup Disk option in my System Preferences section, it displays the bootcamp partition as a folder and not as a drive anymore.
I'm assuming that I messed up some permissions or lost some vital links during my attempted resizing/reclaiming of harddrive space.  How do I fix this without having to reload either all of my Mac info or all or my Win7 info?  I'd hate to consider the last two days of my life loading this crap up a complete loss.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi surroundsound,
you can't put more partitions on internal HD once you install winOS with Boot Camp.
The sure fix is to delete the windows partition (with Boot Camp Assistant, not Disk Utility), then getting rid of the extra partition (with Disk Utility).
then you can re-install your win& (recreate the win. partition with Boot Camp) - don't add any partitions after.

  • IMac G5 froze and now it wont boot? Help!

I have iMac G5, its 3 years old. I was playing a game and all of sudden it froze.
-First tried to resarted the computer, it wont boot up and there was no sound.
-Secondly, I manage to reboot, but it gave me the gray with Apple Logo and did not reach to the login screen.
-Thirdly, it booted up, though it was very sluggish and slow.
I manage to use Disk Utility, it seem to be fine. I shut down the computer it just froze.
I restarted the machine nothing, just a black screen. Only once I turn on with sound, still black screen and the FAN started to rev-up. I took out Ram from the machine and to see if I can restart it. I get power, No sound, and no gray screen. I have no clue what happen and how to fix it.
    Any tips will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Well, you could try booting from your install disc, and either running Apple Hardware Test, or using Disk Utility to try and repair the drive, but I still think it's the logic board:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then if possible, reboot and run Permissions Repair from your hard drive.
Let me know if you manage to revive it.

  • MacBook Pro: Tiger wont boot past grey apple screen w/ spinning gear, HELP!

    Hey everybody,
I have a 1.83 Ghz MBP with 512 mb of RAM (lame I know). The other day someone was using my computer to burn a CD on iTunes when all of my programs began failing. On instinct I rebooted my computer to solve the problem. Alas, now I cant boot past the grey apple screen, and the gear is spinning away. Saddest part of the story is that I had time set aside to back up my computer the day after this happened . Anyway what is the best thing to do from here? I haven't made any moves to fix it yet really, so what is the best thing that I can do to try and get my files back?
    Thank you,
    Sam A.

Hi, I posted to you in yoour other thread.
I very much doubt Disk Utility or fsck will fix an +Invalid Node Structure+ error. That's a pretty serious error and DU is just not robust enough of a utility to repair it.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Cheers! DALE
p.s. If the +Invalid Node Structure+ is real bad, there's a risk even the mighty DiskWarrior will not be able to help. Normally it will come thru; it's only in the severe cases it won't be able to do it. If you don't have a backup, and need the data bad, it's worth the try!

  • Over volted gtx 480 using MSI afterburner now it wont boot.

I have a gtx 480 that I set to 1213 volts under water cooling.I was under the impression that with low WC temps I would be fine. I was stupid enough to run furmark, ran fine for about 3 minutes then computer shut down. I think the voltage is hard locked into the card I have tried booting with a second card (SLI Mobo) but the entire pc simply wont boot if I have my 2 pcie power connectors plugged in. Fan spins up and pc posts if no power connectors are connected but even with a second card as primary windows does not detect the card. I have tried using a second PSU to power the card while primary PSU powers mainboard and PCIE bus but I get the same issue. Computer refuses to boot. Lights come on for about half and second then I need to unplug the power cable and switch off psu to get any sort of response from my pc. I wish I didn't set the voltage to 1.2 ect, I know this is my own fault, but is there anything I can do on my own end to fix this?

I'm pretty sure aware afterburner only changes the cards values when running the profile in Windows so it should have reset on reboot.
Can you try the card in another machine to determine if it's damaged?
Clear the motherboard CMOS too. >>Clear CMOS Guide<<

  • Ran update to 10.4.11 and now it wont boot

Last night, I tried to update to ver. 10.4.11, and now it will not boot.
The reason I ran the update is because I downloaded an application called Sandvox, got a message that it could not install on my current OS and I needed to update to Leopard or Tiger. I was already running 10.4.10, and I thought that was a weird message, so I thought maybe there was an update that I needed. I dragged the Sandvox application icon to the trash can- and checked to see if an update was available and saw that there were 3 updates available. The first update was for ITunes, second one I don't remember, third one was 10.4.11 intel chip something. The first 2 updates were successful, the third update for 10.4.11 failed to install and I got an exclamation mark next to it and it stated it was unable to install and that the application had been moved to the trash and in order to successfully install the update it would need to be taken out of the trash. Then I got a second pop saying my computer needs to be restarted (i'm guessing because of the other 2 updates that ran successfully). I had to force quit safari to restart- and had to force it to shut down by pressing shift and power, then ctrl and power because it would not respond to anything else. I'm not sure which one of those combinations of keystrokes got to to shut off- but one of them did. Then it just would not boot after that.
When I try to to boot it I let it sit for 10 min, but all I get is a grey screen with an apple and a spinning circle thing, and the computer gets MUCH hotter than usual and the fan kicks on and spins very loudly- much more loudly than usual. So I just shut it off in fear of doing damage by heat.
This is my only computer, so I've had to come over to a neighbors house and ask to use their computer to try and find some help-
I would really....really appreciate any help. I have so many thing I have to get done, and this is my only computer. Thank you very much in advance for anyone who can help.

Thanks Hans for the suggestion, but I do not own a copy of DiskWarrior. I think that because I don't own any disk utilities other than what are on the OS X install disk, I will try those tools for now. The archive and install function sounds a little nerve wrecking- I'm guessing it means it will archive any user files, and overwrite any system files? Because I can't boot the computer I am not able to backup some of my recent work before doing this. Should I expect the wost when doing this- or have people used this function without the loss of any files?
UPDATE: The person who is letting me use their computer found a DW utility and they are currently waiting for the files so I can copy them to a CD. It is labeled as DW 4 and the .rar says it will create a bootable cd. Should I hold of on any action until the DW disc is ready? I guess there is a chance the file will not be complete, or be a fake- I will be extracting it and burning the disc on a PC.....

  • Incomplete Leopard install, now won't boot

Been running OS 10.4.11 on my G5 iMac.  Started to install Leopard OS X 10.5 and because of damaged disc, install didn't complete.
Problem is now the iMac will not boot up at all.  Tried to bootup from disc by holding "C" down, no luck.  Tried the OS X 10.4 disc,
and no luck there either.  Help?

An external hard disk with a clone of your 10.4 would be handy Oh Ye of Great Faith.
Have you tried restarting holding down the option key on restart to allow the selection of the 10.4 disk?
Failing that do you have another Mac you could connect to using Target Disk mode and see if your 10.4 disk works in it to reinstall onto your iMac?

  • Failed win7 installation, black screen on boot

I have an Imac, about 4 years old, 2ghz core 2 duo.
Last night i attempted to install a copy on windows 7 in bootcamp. I created an install DVD, succesfully created a partition and got about 1/3 way through the installation when it failed. I tried twice then shut down the computer. Today i started the imac, boot sound worked, then after white screen for a few seconds, black screen with a flashing white - in the top left, like dos. I'm unable to type anything.
I've tried booting in safe mode, selecting boot device etc, but nothing. the only thing i've been able to do is eject the windows disk by holding f12.
I'm using a logitech wireleskeyboard and mouse if that matters.
I have also tried creating a bootable usb drive with mountain lion, but as i cant get to the boot menu, it's no use.
I've got all my dada backed up externally so i dont mind having to freshly install if that's an issue.
    any ideas? thanks

Could be your monitor power supply is going. could also be 10.6.6 so first try to get back to a OSX which did not give you problems.
