Failed live migration from HyperV2012 to Hyperv2012R2 cluster

I’m at a loss on something and I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I tried to migrate a server from one of my 2012 hosts to a brand new verified Hyperv 2012 R2 cluster. I had already succesfully migrated 5 others
from there but this one Sql 2012 guest gave me a problem.
When I tried to live migrate it, it failed. It said the hardware on the destination computer was not compatible. I did some research and one blog said that sometimes you migrate to different hardware and it fails, like processors. The guy
on the blog said to check the box under processor\compatibility to put the virtual processor in compatibility mode. I did that and tried again but it failed again. This blog said something about resource groups. The virt was “locked” at that
point.
I got frustrated so I just turned off the guest and copied the disks and rebuilt it on Aag with the same memory processor setting. I thought I was fine, but I looked at it the next day and in the failover cluster manager it shows the machine is “off”.
BUT the VM is actually running because the server is working. It’s a database server and the sites using it are up, and I can RDC to it. So I’m afraid to touch it.
And these are the errors from the event log
'Virtual Machine Configuration DEVDB1' failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service.
The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to register the configuration for the virtual machine '62AAD2B5-8E03-4B59-84E0-D52CBF36934B' at 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\Devdb1\DEVDB1': The
system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002). If the virtual machine is managed by a failover cluster, ensure that the file is located at a path that is accessible to other nodes of the cluster.
Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration DEVDB1' of type 'Virtual Machine Configuration' in clustered role 'DEVDB1' failed. The error code was '0x2' ('The system cannot find the file
specified.').
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart
it. Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.
I think I moved it while it was in a funky state. I also think I was supposed to “export” the vm first. I guess I’m a newbie but I’m not sure what to do to fix it. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think i found at least part of the problem but i'm not sure. My new VM's configuration files and directory are called this.
D79490DB-48F9-40A4-9540-53F2532D3F7F
D79490DB-48F9-40A4-9540-53F2532D3F7F.xml
Not 62AAD2B5-8E03-4B59-84E0-D52CBF36934B
Still not sure what to do about that though.

• Virtual Machines With Large RAM Fails Live Migration

Hi everyone....
I have a 2-node Hyper-V cluster managed by SCVMM 2012 R2. I am current unable to migrate a VM that is using 48 GB of RAM. Each node has 256 GB of RAM running Windows Server 2012 R2.
When the VM is running on node 1; there is 154 GB in use, and 102 GB available. When I try to migrate this VM to node 2, (which has 5.6 GB in use, and 250 GB available), I get this error message in VMM:
Error (10698)
The virtual machine (abc-defghi-vm) could not be live migrated to the virtual machine host (xyz-wnbc-nd03) using this cluster configuration.
Recommended Action
Check the cluster configuration and then try the operation again.
(In case you were wondering, I ran the cluster validation and it passed without a problem.)
The Failover Cluster event log shows two key entries:
First:
Cluster resource 'SCVMM xyz-wnbc-vm' in clustered role 'SCVMM xyz-wnbc-vm Resources' has transitioned from state OfflineCallIssued to state OfflinePending.
Exactly 60 seconds later, this message takes place:
Cluster resource 'SCVMM abc-defghi-vm in clustered role 'SCVMM abc-defghi-vm Resources' rejected a move request to node 'xyz-wnbc-nd03'. The error code was '0x340031'. Cluster resource 'SCVMM abc-defghi-vm' may be busy or in a state where it
cannot be moved. The cluster service may automatically retry the move.
Nothing found after Googling "0x340031". Does anyone know what error that is?
Other notes:
If the Virtual machine is shut down I can migrate it.
If I lower the VM RAM settings and start it up again I can do a Live Migration.
All other VMs can do the Live Migration; largest RAM size is 16GB.
Any suggestions?

Hi Sir,
Could you please check if NUMA setting for every node are same via using perfmon.exe and using counter "Hyper-v VM Vid Numa Node " :
>>and the virtual machine in question has it enabled as well.
Could you please also post the NUMA setting of that VM for us ?
Best Regards,
Elton Ji

• VM windows 2008 Cluster on Hyperv 2012 Server FC Disk error after Live Migration of the active VM Cluster Node

Deployed a 2 nodes Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Failover Cluster on a HyperV 2012 Server cluster deployed on IBM HS23 blade.
Disk susbsystem is IBM Storwize V7000. MPIO driver installed plus IBM DDSM.
Lun presented to the VM are connected with Virtual FC Adapter and everything works fine in the cluster until we start a live migration of the VM which hold the cluster disks online.
After migration complete positively, at the moment the MPIO of the migrated VM goes crazy with a lot of errors (source: mpio eventID 16 ) and warnings (source: mpio EventID: 17) in the system event log. After that the disks becomes unavailable.
Consequently everything hangs until power off the migrated vm, so the services on the cluster switchs on the second node.
I try to set the registry key HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Disk\TimeOutValue to 190 as i found on various articles but nothing seems to change....
Any idea?

Hello,
I've just been through the IBM interoperability matrix and came across this statement:
Hyper-V on x64 based systems is supported with the following guest OS: Windows 2003 32bit, Windows 2003 64bit, Windows 2008 32bit, Windows 2008 64bit.
Clustering of guest OS is not supported at this time. When using Emulex HBAs with Hyper-V please select the settings mentioned in the Host Attachment section of SVC Info Center

• Live migration from oracle 8.0.3.0.0 to oracle 10g

Hello everyone,
I have Oracle 8.0.3.0.0 running on Windows NT platform. I wish to migrate from Oracle 8.0.3.0.0 to Oracle 10g. And I wish to do it without shutting down my Oracle 8 server. Sort of live migration. Since transaction rate is very high. And putting down the server would mean hanging up whole work. Is it possible. If yes what all hardware and software requirements are there? Or Import and Export is the only option,
In anticipation of your guidlines,

Hi All,
We try to migrate a 8i database to 10g by using the exp and imp. All tables and data are already migrated by imp. During the imp, there are errors said the trigger compile with errors.
When login to the em to check, I found these 2 errors.
Line # = 2 Column # = 1 Error Text = PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
Line # = 2 Column # = 60 Error Text = PL/SQL: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
My trigger is a very simple one:
BEGIN
Select TB_COUNTER_SEQ.NEXTVAL INTO :NEW.INCREMENT_NUM FROM DUAL;
END;
And I'm sure the "TB_COUNER_SEQ" is there.
Do I need to change anything on the trigger when migrating from 8i?
In fact, besides this trigger, all other trigger imp to this schema are having the same error. The schema in the 10g is a newly created one, is there any special right I need to create grant to this new user?Grant the necessary privileges on the tables (and any other objects used, like sequences) directly to the owner of the triggers. Privileges granted to a role don't count in AUTHID OWNER stored procedures; the privileges have to be granted to the owner of the stored procedure (or to PUBLIC).
It the error is occurring at position 60, then it looks like you don't have privileges on dual. Login as SYS and
GRANT SELECT ON dual TO PUBLIC;You may need synonyms (perhaps public synonyms) for the objects, too.

That was sort of my gut feelings so I checked our certificates beforehand and they are using certs with sha1 fingerprint. But we are not using SSL - our connections are made using port 389. And the communication status is green.
But I cannot add SSL because it complains about "unable to obtain a valid certificate for SSL communication information. Please verify that the adress and port are correct and that the LDAP directory has been configured with a valid certificate.
So I cannot understand why users cannot authenticate with zenagent.

• DMVPN phase I fails when migrating from PSK to RSIG

I am currently is the process of migrating my DMVPN network from pre-share key to certificates. Most of the spokes have come up and are working without any issues but there are several that are not making it past phase I. I have included the isakmp debugging from the hub and one of the spokes that are failing. I see that the hub is going QM_IDLE after receiving the certificate from the spoke but it does not look like the spoke ever receives the cert from the hub. I suspect an issue with the ISP but it's not as simple as filtering 500 as all the messages except the cert seem to make it. If I move the spoke back to PSK it works fine. Has anyone seen this issue before and what was the resolution?

Mike,
Hub sends its cert but spoke never recives that, this is typically a problem with fragmentation handling in transit networks.
Sniff both end you control and check whether you're not missing any fragments on spoke end.
Could be as simple as an MTU problem on your end or could be something in the path attempting reassambly.
Multiple ways to go, check your end, if fragments are missing in transit - start investigating with ISP(s).
M.

Hi Experts,
We have migrated one of our portal systems from 7.0 to 7.4. There is one application which uses Adobe Interactive Forms. The same DC when we tested on Development environment works fine as expected. The same thing when deployed to QA system, I am getting the below error:

Hello,
This may caused by:
1, ReaderRights
2, Destination ConfigPort_Document
It seems you have already confirmed point 1, so please check point 2.
Also check SAP note 1443819 part "Check the configuration", if the service is not working, you have to config the service according to SAP note 1443819.

• VM stays in Status Stopping after live migration failed/was canceled

I have a hyper-v Cluster running on Windows 2012 r2. I tried a live Migration from one node of Cluster to another node of the same Cluster. It got stuck by around 65% (if remembered correctly). After 45 minutes nothing has changed so I canceled the Job in
the Failover Cluster Manager. The VM went into a Status of "Stopping". After 5 hours it is still in Status "stopping". I haven't found any Information on why it got stuck on the 65% and have just found the error message that the Job got
canceled using Failover Cluster Manager events. But nothing saying why it stays in "Stopping" Status. Searched the Internet but I have Trouble finding anything related to the issue I see.
Any ideas?

Hi Saren90,
Please try to disable the process "vmwp.exe " corresponding to the VM in host's task manager.
Best Regards

• Server 2012 cluster - virtual machine live migration does not work

Hi,
We have a hyper-v cluster with two nodes running Windows Server 2012. All the configurations are identical.
When I try to make a Live migration from one node to the other I get an error message saying:
Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXXXX' failed.
I get no other error messages, not even in event viewer. This same happens with all of our virtual machines.
A normal Quick migration works just fine for all of the virtual machines, so network configuration should not be an issue.
The above error message does not provide much information.

Hi,
Please check whether your configuration meet live migration requirement:
Two (or more) servers running Hyper-V that:
Support hardware virtualization.
Yes they support virtualization.
Are using processors from the same manufacturer (for example, all AMD or all Intel).
Both Servers are identical and brand new Fujitsu-Siemens RX300S7 with the same kind of processor (Xeon E5-2620).
Belong to either the same Active Directory domain, or to domains that trust each other.
Both nodes are in the same domain.
Virtual machines must be configured to use virtual hard disks or virtual Fibre Channel disks (no physical disks).
All of the vitual machines have virtual hard disks.
Use of a private network is recommended for live migration network traffic.
Have tried this, but does not help.
Requirements for live migration in a cluster:
Windows Failover Clustering is enabled and configured.
Yes
Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) storage in the cluster is enabled.
Yes
Requirements for live migration using shared storage:
All files that comprise a virtual machine (for example, virtual hard disks, snapshots, and configuration) are stored on an SMB share. They are all on the same CSV
Permissions on the SMB share have been configured to grant access to the computer accounts of all servers running Hyper-V.
Requirements for live migration with no shared infrastructure:
No extra requirements exist.
Also please refer to this article to check whether you have finished all preparation works for live migration:

• 2012 R2 Cluster and Live Migration

6 Node Cluster with Server 2012 R2, all VM's are Server 2012 R2
4 Fiber SAN's
Moving and Live Migration worked fine in FailOver Cluster Manager
But this time we were trying do it with SCVMM 2012 R2 and just move one VM (Gen2)
Of course it failed at 99%
Error (12711)
VMM cannot complete the WMI operation on the server (whatever) because of an error: [MSCluster_Resource.Name="SCVMM VMHost"] The cluster resource could not be found.
The cluster resource could not be found (0x138F)
Recommended Action
Resolve the issue and then try the operation again.
How do I fix this? the VM is still running. The two vhdx files it was moving are smaller then orginal's , but it change the configuration file to point to new ones, which are bad.
it says I can Repair it... Redo or Undo....of course neither of those options work.
Wait for the object to be updated automatically by the next periodic Live migrate storage of virtual machine vmhost from whatever to whatever job.
ID: 1708
Cluster has no errors, SAN's have no errors, CSV have no errors. the machine running scvmm is VM running on the cluster

How did you create this VM? if this is created outside of VMM, I recommend doing a manual refresh of the VM first to ensure that VMM can read its attributes. Then retry the operation.
Btw, are the VMs using diff disk? any checkpoints associated with them?

• Hyper-V Live Migration Compatibility with Hyper-V Replica/Hyper-V Recovery Manager

Hi,
Is Hyper-V Live Migration compatible with Hyper-V Replica/Hyper-V Recovery
Manager?
I have 2 Hyper-V clusters in my datacenter - both using CSVs on Fibre Channel arrays. These clusters where created and are managed using the same "System Center 2012 R2 VMM" installation. My goal it to eventually move one of these clusters to a remote
DR site. Both sites are connected/will be connected to each other through dark fibre.
I manually configured Hyper-V Replica in the Fail Over Cluster Manager on both clusters and started replicating some VMs using Hyper-V
Replica.
Now every time I attempt to use SCVMM to do a Live Migration of a VM that is protected using Hyper-V Replica to
another host within the same cluster,
the Migration VM Wizard gives me the following "Rating Explanation" error:
"The virtual machine virtual machine name which
requires Hyper-V Recovery Manager protection is going to be moved using the type "Live". This could break the recovery protection status of the virtual machine.
When I ignore the error and do the Live Migration anyway, the Live migration completes successfully with the info above. There doesn't seem to be any impact on the VM or it's replication.
When a Host Shuts-down or is put into maintenance, the VM Migrates successfully, again, with no noticeable impact on users or replication.
When I stop replication of the VM, the error goes away.
Initially, I thought this error was because I attempted to manually configure
the replication between both clusters using Hyper-V Replica in Failover Cluster Manager (instead of using Hyper-V Recovery Manager).
However, even after configuring and using Hyper-V Recovery Manager, I still get the same error. This error does not seem to have any impact on the high-availability of
my VM or on Replication of this VM. Live migrations still occur successfully and replication seems to carry on without any issues.
However, it now has me concern that Live Migration may one day occur and break replication of my VMs between both clusters.
I have searched, and searched and searched, and I cannot find any mention in official or un-official Microsoft channels, on the compatibility of these two features.
I know vMware vSphere replication and vMotion are compatible with each otherhttp://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.replication_admin.doc%2FGUID-8006BF58-6FA8-4F02-AFB9-A6AC5CD73021.html.
Please confirm to me: Are Hyper-V Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica compatible
with each other?
If they are, any link to further documentation on configuring these services so that they work in a fully supported manner will be highly appreciated.
D

This can be considered as a minor GUI bug.
Let me explain. Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica is supported on both Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Hyper-V.
This is because we have the Hyper-V Replica Broker Role (in a cluster) that is able to detect, receive and keep track of the VMs and the synchronizations. The configuration related to VMs enabled with replications follows the VMs itself.
If you try to live migrate a VM within Failover Cluster Manager, you will not get any message at all. But VMM will (as you can see), give you an
error but it should rather be an informative message instead.
Intelligent placement (in VMM) is responsible for putting everything in your environment together to give you tips about where the VM best possible can run, and that is why we are seeing this message here.
I have personally reported this as a bug. I will check on this one and get back to this thread.
Update: just spoke to one of the PMs of HRM and they can confirm that live migration is supported - and should work in this context.
Please see this thread as well: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsazure/en-US/29163570-22a6-4da4-b309-21878aeb8ff8/hyperv-live-migration-compatibility-with-hyperv-replicahyperv-recovery-manager?forum=hypervrecovmgr

Virtual Fibre Channel had sense in pre-R2 times when there was no shared VHDX and you had to somehow provide fault tolerant shared storage to guest VM cluster (spawning iSCSI target on top of FC was slow and ugly). Now there\s no point in putting one into
production so if you have issues just use shared VHDX. See:
Deploy a Guest Cluster Using a Shared Virtual Hard Disk
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265980.aspx
Shared VHDX
http://blogs.technet.com/b/storageserver/archive/2013/11/25/shared-vhdx-files-my-favorite-new-feature-in-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
Shared VHDX is much more flexible and has better performance.
Good luck!
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

• Live migration of domains with OVMM

Can anybody point out the reference for performing live migration of domains through OVM Manager instead of CLI. Could not find it in the User's manual for OVM Server 2.2 release.

Does the same thing happen if you initiate the live migration from within SCVMM? Generally speaking, if SCVMM is in use, you should first try to perform the operation from SCVMM before trying to use the Failover Cluster Manager or the Hyper-V Manager.
Should not make any difference, but it would be another point of information.
What is so strange is that a live migration within the cluster is not doing anything with the disks. All it is doing is moving the executing VM from the memory of one node of the cluster to another node in the cluster. The virtual hard disks,
.vhd or .vhdx, are not touched, unless when you say 'live migration' you mean 'live storage migration'. Very strange that it is only happening on the VMs with .vhd.
Another thing you could try ... convert the .vhd on one of the problematic VMs to a .vhdx file and see if that fixes the issue.

Live storage migration works fine. When I migrate VM back to original node then VM starts correctly.
Thanks for any response.

Hi, Daniel,
Sometimes you might face failed live migration due to VMSwitches being named differently. So, the first thing to do is to make sure that VMSwitches on both hosts have the same name.
Also, you can try to take cluster offline and perform repairing procedure that appears to fix the mysterious issue causing live migrations of VMs to fail. ( Open Failover Cluster Manager -> Select the cluster name -> Take Offline
-> More Actions, click Repair.
Otherwise, if you’re short on time and willing to migrate VM as soon as possible, you can perform one-time backup/restore operation, using one of the free backup utilities available on the market (VeaamZIP or similar). In many way this
tool acts as zip-utility for VMs. It helped us a lot, when migration failed for whatever reason, and we didn't have enough time to find the root cause.
Kind regards, Leonardo.
