Failed logins problem

Hello, everyone....
OK, first of all, the players...
1. NetWare 6.5 SP7 servers: a half dozen at the main office. One at each of
three sites connected with an site to site VPN tunnel.
2. User laptop: Windows XP SP3, pretty well patched.
3. Other considerations: VPN tunnel is SonicWall, an NSA 3500 at the main
office and TZ210 at each VPN location. Also ZenWorks 7.x is involved. I'm
not sure of the exact version, but it is some variety of Zen 7.
My problem: this laptop is single-handedly generating dozens of failed
logins on at least two of the three VPN sites.I looked at the Remote Manager
logs for these locations and the Zenworks Workstation Object is shown as the
culprit.
Example log entry from Remote Manager (OrgName and TreeName withhelf for
security reasons):
Time: Thursday, 9-24-2009 10:35 am
Address: IP 172.26.100.04
User: .CN=AOS36816 WINXP
00:1F:E2:14:73:CC.OU=Workstations.O=<OrgName>.T=<T reeName>.
I checked the NSA3500 device and the TZ210 device. There are packets (TCP
524) going from the laptop to the NSA3500 device and then nothing is heard
from them again on the TZ210 device.
I'm wondering if the 524 packets are not getting send down the VPN tunnel.
And if that is the case, WHY is the server on the other end of this given me
failed logins?
Am I making myself clear about this?
Thanks in advance.

Hello again...
I also forgot something.
It sometimes does this for minutes, hours, sometimes week after week and
then
It stops for no apparent reason and the count on failed logins starts to
drop after an hour or so.
That's the really weird part.

  • Problem with failed logins for "Workstation" objects

    All
I am currently seeing an issue in my environment since an upgrade of the
    workstation ZENworks client to 6.5.
Basically our environment was all ZEN 3.2, over the last month we have
been force upgrading each site to ZENworks 6.5 for clients through the
login script. Since then we have had failed logins from various
workstations and the only way to resolve the issue, currently, is to
delete the workstation object and let it re-create itself which does
    resolve the issue.
From a site perspective I am not in a position to delete 2000 workstaion
objects so they can re-register into the tree so I was wondering if
anyone had seen anything like this and knew how to resolve it?
    Current count on Health Monitor:
    Failed Logins Per Hour 3038 6096 N/A
    Example Error:

    User: .CN=PUKWUL01523.OU=WKSTS.OU=THEALE.OU=UK.O=FLE.T=F LE-NDS.
I was thinking it may be a rights issues of some sort but any help
    greatly received!!!!!

I did see this issue a while ago when moving from 3.2 to 6.5
What I might suggest is trying to force the upgraded PCs to create "new"
    workstation objects.
As part of the upgrade process, unregister the Workstation Objects 1st,
then run the agent install. Have the ZFD7 Import policy create the
workstation Objects with a slight different name or in a slightly different
    location.
I dont recall the details exactly so I wont say too much since I will not
have the facts 100% correctly, but it was an issue in which the old
workstation objects would lose the ability to authenticate after a few days
because of a switch in the WS Manager.
By having new objects made, the issue would be avoided.
The old ones should go aways shortly due to automatic workstation cleanup.

  • There have been 7,039 failed login attempts in the last 30 minutes

    Hi,
I am trying to find out the cause for an OEM alert we received:
There have been 7,039 failed login attempts in the last 30 minutesThe cause is ofcourse known, but I can't find out why the application anyway was able to do 7000+ login attempts within half an hour. The account should have locked after 10 attempts
The perticular account has a DEFAULT profile.
Auditing is on, so if we look into DBA_AUDIT_SESSION it is clearly seen that within 1 minute approx 1200 failed login attempts occured without the account being locked.

The above login attempts come from three application server of which I don't know how they handle failed logins.
Can anyone point me into a search direction as to why the account didn't lock. Just for completeness some extra info about the account and the DEFAULT profile:

Edit: For the record, after I discovered the above I changed the DEFAULT profile, so the account would not unlock itself anymore. If this problem will occur in the future, maybe we can get more info as the account - if it gets locked- should stay locked now:

I cann't say that resource_limit is not TRUE, because you are saying "If we retry the login with a incorrect password manually from SQLplus, after 10 login attempts the account gets locked as expected.", so it means profile is working for the "KRAMPV" user.
The interesting thing is USERHOST is changing, so another option is the listener log should also have information about the failed connection attempts.
My another guess is duplicate user in the database i.e. one is KRAMPV and another is "krampv" (with quotation mark). Just check in dba_users that is there something like exists or not.....
    select upper(username),count(*) from dba_users group by upper(username) having count(*) > 1;

    Girish SharmaHi Girish,
    resource_limit is set to FALSE.
And we've tested the locking with another user, because KRAMPV is used by the application that is running and we didn't want to risk that it got locked
USERHOST is not changing, there are 4 hosts ( application servers ) doing the same thing, so connection requests are coming from 4 hosts concurrently.
There is luckily no duplicate user.
Thanks anyway, we will keep investigating. I also sent the information to the application provider.

  • Dell N2048P - Failed logins

Hi allOur organisation recently had all it's swithces replaced with Dell N2048P's. In the logs on all of them I see constant failed login attempts for root, admin, and at least one of our user names. The logs are pretty unhelpful as that is all they say, would be good to get some more detail on where the attempt was coming from either IP or at least the switch Port number.I have been looking for a way to increase the logging but it does not seem to be an option. Does anyone know if this is possible? Also had an issue with one switch where one of the 10GB fibre links would keep dropping out, tracked to a dodgy patch lead, hwoever it only logs this as 'Notice' to me it should be higher and to get notification via SPiceworks Helpdesk I need to set the minimum level to Notice and end up with many emails per switch per hour. So is there a way...

A couple more ideas, make sure the user and password are in the correct
format. Another thing to look for is DMS. If DMS was setup at some point
and the path to the library no longer exists or is no longer accessible, it
    could cause similar problems.

  • Failed Logins from external addresses

Hi,I recently started a trial GFI/MaxFocus RMM software. It high-lighted a couple of servers getting numerous failed logins. One of these, a 2008 R2 64 bit server, is getting between 4 and 5,000 failed logins daily. The login attempts originate from IP addresses in numerous European countries and the US, and on varying ports. The server sits behind a SonicWall TZ 205. It would be useless to block IP addresses as the login attempts are from constantly changing sources. There is a branch office that makes terminal connections to this server, and the GFI software is using some port or ports for its service. The server gets Windows updates periodically. Those are the only services I am aware that require communication of this server with the outside world.I can specifically allow ports required by these services with the outside at the...

You should adapt the menu.lst of the backed up OS like this:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sdb1 ro
    initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
    explanation:
    - Your root should be (hd1,0) because the external disc is the second hard disc (assuming root=/dev/sdb1 is correct).
    - The kernel and initrd line should have /boot, because you don't have a seperate boot partition.
Also, you didn't adapt your fstab of the backed up hard disk. In particular, you have to remove the entries for /boot, /home and swap. The entry of root file system is also wrong, because you still have the old UUID in it:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    /dev/sdb1 / ext4 defaults 0 1
Finally, I think not following the excludes in the wiki will also cause problems.

  • MyWebtop failed login breach....

Have configured some user accounts for MyDeskTop. When logging in using the MyDeskTop, and the incorrect user account is entered, and authenticates, it will not initialize as is correct since the user account was not configured for use with MyDeskTop. However, all attempts to log in on that PC from the failed login forward using the ../sgd/mydesktop form, even for a valid and correctly configured user returns the error "Failed to start MyDesktop. Please contact and administrator." At that time, if the url .../sgd (standard login url) is executed, the session logins in without further authentication directly to the failed log in user's webtop. So there are two problems. 1) The failed login does not reset or clear the environment rendering the client device almost unusable, and 2) the failed session can be used for illicit login.
Are there any variables or other configuration that can be set to make the MyDeskTop login process more reliable?

  • Login problem after locking Mac overnight

We have a number of Mac users who are experiencing a similar login problem and we're at a loss to understand why. We are having the same issue on MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, and iMac. Most are using 10.5.6, a few earlier versions. Most have the lastest updates, a couple don't. Each has different energy saving settings as well. So, the issue seems to affect different computer conditions. Also, one user has reset the SMC, but that doesn't work for the Mac Pros, so that's probably not the issue. Below is the original email I got from a user so you can see exactly what is happening.
"I lock my screen when the screensaver is enabled and it works perfectly except when I leave the system locked for a day or more. After being locked for a long period of time it takes a very long time to unlock. For example, I leave at 3PM on Friday afternoon and lock the machine. When I arrive at 8AM on Monday morning it always takes 5-10 minutes unlock the machine. I enter my password and it appears to be attempting to check the password but it just sits there until it eventually fails and says “Please try again.” My password is still entered so I just click “Okay” and it logs me in instantly."
If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the reply. In answer to your question though about shutting down, the users sometimes need to remote into their computer, so shutting down is not really an option.
How do I view the console logs?
In the utilities directory, run console.app
You can search by date or look at the various logs - error logs, normal logs, etc.
If I do find that one or more applications are causing a problem, is it then just a matter of sutting them down before logging off? It is just kind of unusual in my opinion that this is affecting so many users running so many variations of software, computers, etc.
It may be one app thta is common to all the computers. If an app is not properly written, it may cause a problem if it is forced to shutdown from an external program. When a computer shuts down, there is a signal sent out but unless the app responds to it properly, the app may essentially undergo an unexpected forced shutdown and when restarted need to recover.
Also, if for some reason the Leopard filesystem is flagged as not being properly shutdown, it may run an fsck upon boot, which takes some time, or it may simply copy journaled data which is faster but also make the restart appear slow. These items should show up in the console logs.

  • Does WLS security module cache failed login attempts?

    Hi,
I have observed some weird behavior regarding WLS security module
I have integrated OAM with WLS for SSO. I have my own identity asserter and login module. Here is the scenario
    1) I tried to login a user which doesn't yet exist in my application, let's say "userA". The user is in LDAP and OAM. Identity Asserter gets the token and passes it to loginModule. Since the user doesnt' exist in my applicatgion, my loginModule throws LoginException
    2) I added the user to my application
    3) I tried to login again. LoginModule succeeds (with commit() called). But it WLS doesn't authenticate, still bring out the login page ( I set the authmethod to both client-cert and form)
    <login-config>
    <auth-method>CLIENT-CERT,FORM</auth-method>
    </login-config>
    4) I either need to restart WLS server or wait for say certain period (about 20 minutes). Then the login user for "userA" works fine with no login page shown.
It appears to me that WLS has some user login cache which "remembers" the failed login. Even login module succeeds, it still brings out the login page. I have to restart server. Any one has same experience?
    Thanks.

I need to respond to this as I posted the previous reply. We found that our issue MAY be a known bug in 10.0, and here is the thread on that :
    http://monduke.com/2008/07/27/bug-in-the-weblogic-10-active-directory-authentication-provider/
This was supposed to be fixed in 10.3.0, which we are on, and as of this moment still experiencing the same problem. However we have 'use retrieved username as principal' set to true in our Active Directory Authentication Provider, which someone commented still resulted in the problem not being fixed, and we are in the process of trying out a file from Oracle that may fix the problem at this very moment. I'll try to remember to come back with our final resolution. Hope this helps someone else out.

We have to implement the mailing system in linux.,to send the mail regarding failed login attempts and ip address of user who attempted the failed login.,any one have the idea on this?
    Regards.,

Running an old beta version of RHEL is a bad idea. If you are concerned about security and operation of your OS I suggest to use a more recent release version. You can download, install and use Oracle Linux for free.
Mail processing of failed login attempts is not a good idea and to my knowledge there is no such built-in system setting. I suggest you read the standard documentation or search the Web for information on how to set up a mail system. You will probably need to create a custom script to process failed login attempts.

    Hi
I installed oracle 10g express edition and after installing successfully logged in browser , unlocked hr login and also created one form then I shutdown the database and rebooted my pc and since then when I try to login to "go to Database Home page" after starting database , I get a cookie 127.0.0.1 with username and password, First of all I am not sure what username/password it is expecting, I believe it requires my Windows XP username and password , I tried to enter couple of times my pc login username which has administrator privileges, I also checked it has ora_dba group but after entering pc username , password browser opens saying "unauthorized". I created another os user and tried with that still same. I tried entering oracle password "SYSTEM" and password for it but still could not login, I tried HR username password still nothing.
I tried disabling firewall but still same issue. I tried to re-install two time but still same .
Start database dos prompt does show all the process are started successfully .

I have another version for oracle installed on my pc .
I ended both the oracle process (Oracle.exe) through the Task Manager
Then manually started “OracleServiceXe” service through Component Services
Control Panel – Performance & Maintenance – Administrative – Component Services
    Then did following
Programs – Oracle Database10g ExpressEdition – Start Database
Programs – Oracle Databse10g ExpressEdition – Go to Database Homepage –
    Enter username SYSTEM
Enter password xxxxxx … whatever given at the time of installing.
And I did successfully login to the browser .
