Failed Making Partition

Hey all, I need some help. I have a new MacBook Pro and I've been using it for about 4 months and decided I wanted to install windows and wanted to go the bootcamp route. So I tried to create a partition via Bootcamp and it fails.
This is the message I get:
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
So I have a few questions, has anyone else had this? What did you do?
I have use time machine and made back ups...my other question is if I restore my drive then restore my data wouldn't that just recreate the same problem since it's restoring all the same data?
If it doesn't then I guess I'm okay I just wanted to check before I go and do something like this...I've never wiped my drive before and used a back up. Any help is welcome.
Thanks

  • Unable to access data/storage space of failed primary partition after internet recovery

    Hello,
So just a bit of quick background info to the issue:  I experienced my first major failure with my iMac a few weeks ago (early Feb) where the main partition on my 3TB Fusion drive developed a corruption of some sort. I went through all the disk verification/repair procedures I could find, however nothing worked and I ended up with a grey screen on bootup that had a round logo with a slash through it. I tried a reinstall of OS X Yosemite from the recovery partition, however this failed part-way through, and I was forced to perform an internet recovery instead.
This worked, and I now have my iMAC stable again, however the recovery process created a new primary partition in addition to the old primary partition. This wasn't a major issue for me as I planned to recover some files from the failed partition that my backups had missed. Unfortunately since then, that old partition has disappeared and I can't get it back. I figure I have lost those files, but what is really annoying is the space that old partition took up has not freed up. My 3TB fusion drive is only letting me use 120GB of the space (the size of the new primary partition).
So I guess I have two questions:
1 - Is there a way to find and get the old partition back mounting again? The drives that list with a 'diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list' command are attached, but do not appear to contain the old partition that I am after (I've tried manually mounting them via the terminal to check).
2 - If recovering that old partition is not possible, how do I go about freeing up the space it occupied?
    System details:
    OS X Yosemite v10.10.2
    Mac (27-inch, Late 2012)
Processor: 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Any assistance on this one would be greatly appreciated - I can't restore all my files from backups as I am running low on HDD space.
    Cheers,
    Nick

    Hi Eric,
See attached screen shot - is that what you are after?
As you can see I don't have access to the rest of the 3TB fusion drive. I'm thinking I may have to do a clean OS install so I have prepared a Yosemite USB install key ready to go.
Unless you guys can suggest something that is.
Thanks in advance for your help,

  • Refresh FAST for Materialized View failed after Partition Operation

    Dear all,
I have created a Materialized View having a simple join between a Dimension and Fact Table of a Datawarehouse. The MV is REFRESH FAST ON DEMAND.
However, when a Partition Maintenance Operation (PMOP) was performed on the Master Tables, the MV failed to Refresh giving a ORA-32313 error.
As suggested on one of the troubleshooting websites, we did a complete refresh of the MV and fixed it temporarily. However, I would like to know the exact cause for this and would like to have a permanent fix for the same.
Can the DBA for this Database provide me the answers or are there some standard troubleshooting steps for the same?
    Please let me know.
    Best,
    Ketan

    Hello Maurice,
Here are the answers to your questions.
    1) Database is Oracle 9i.
    2) We have a stored procedure to refresh the MV. The command is dbms_mview.refresh('SALES_FACT_MV','f'). It was working fine daily. Only after a PMOP was done on the Master Tables, it failed to refresh. We have also created indexes on some columns of the MV for performance improvement. We are getting a very good improvement.
    3) We have MV logs for both Master Tables to store the incremental values.
    4) We are not able to get the output from DBMS_MVIEW.EXPLAIN_MVIEW since this can be done only by the DBA. WIll update you once I have the info.
    5) Same as Point 2.
Let me know if you need any further info.
    Thanks, Ketan

  • Disk Utility fails to partition

    This is what it says:
    Partition failed with the error:
Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed

Run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it also repair permissions, then give it a try.

  • Filesystem check failed, root partition not found

    Hi all,
Since yesterday I receive the following error message when booting into Arch:
    :: Mounting root filesystem read-only [ OK ]
    :: Checking filesystems [BUSY]
/dev/sda4: no such file or directory
    *************** FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED *******************
    * Please repair manually and reboot ...
The device /dev/sda4 is my root partition, which is - after entering the root
password - mounted as /dev/root. Checking the partition with 'reiserfsck
/dev/sda4' does not give any error or warning messages. I can also
successfully remount and access it with 'mount -n -o remount,rw /'.
'ls -l /dev/sda*' gives me the following:
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 Apr 28 16:32 /dev/sda
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 Apr 28 16:32 /dev/sda1
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 2 Apr 28 16:32 /dev/sda2
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 3 Apr 28 16:32 /dev/sda3
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 4 Apr 28 16:32 /dev/sda4
So the device itself seems to be there. Rebooting doesn't help, neither does
    using older, working kernel versions.
I also checked other topics on similar subjects, but I couldn't find any solution.

Hmm, it doesn't work even with the UUID. But the error looks similar:
Failed to open the device UUID=672f076e-131c-4220-81ba-b30639ef9285: No such file or directory
But when I call rc.sysinit manually directly after entering the root password,
everything works fine. It does work with sda as well as uuid notation.
I manually added some code before the output of the '*** FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED ***' message:
    ls -l /dev/sda*
    sleep 1
    ls -l /dev/sda*
    The result was:
ls: cannot access /dev/sda*: No such file or directory
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 Apr 30 09:12 /dev/sda
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 Apr 30 09:12 /dev/sda1
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 2 Apr 30 09:12 /dev/sda2
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 3 Apr 30 09:12 /dev/sda3
    brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 4 Apr 30 09:12 /dev/sda4
So it seems that the devices are really not yet created. Is it a udev problem?
I am not aware of changing anything udev specific, maybe an updated version?

  • Disk utility fails to partition  - restarting the compuyter is required

I would appreciate your help-I have tried to find a topic with the same problem but could not.
I want to partition my hard drive in order to have a second partition for time machine. I get an error message, saying that I have to press the power button for three seconds etc to restart the machine. And of course when I come back there is no partition.
So, now I try with the installation disk, and use the disk utility, I repair and verify the hard drive, and I try to partition it. After about 10 minutes, I get the same error message, having again to restart the MacBook. So, what´s wrong?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • SOLVED: HP Pavilion dv6-1355dx Windows 7 Recovery Partition Failed, Windows Partition Formatted

Hello everyone. I just joined the community, so I apologize in advance if I am in the wrong place or if I do not supply all the needed information about my computer and problem in this first post.
I have an HP Pavilion dv6-1355dx Entertainment Notebook PC, which came with Windows 7 Home Edition, and an HP Recovery Partition. Today, I decided I wanted to start from scratch, as the system was getting pretty slow, and the User folders were becoming very unorganized. So I followed the instructions found at the HP website and used the program HP Recovery Manager. However, after the Recovery Partition formatted the Windows Partition, and had three minutes left to copy the files into the new partition, a message popped up declaring the recovery failed, and the computer had to be rebooted. So now I have a computer with no operating system on it at all, and the Recovery Partition continues to fail. I have used the Recovery Partition before, and this has never happened.
Has anyone encountered or know of a similar issue? Does anyone know a solution? Am I out of luck, or is there someway to ask HP for a copy of the installation media?
    Thank you in advance.
EDIT: Never mind. I found a forum post with my answer. Sorry to anyone who spent the time to read this post.

  • Cant Remove Failed Linux Partition

So a while back I attempted to install Ubuntu on my MacbookPro with an install CD but I failed.
I notice though, that somewher in this process my computer created 4 partitioned drives on my hardrive.
Now, my main drive only has 60 GB of space because its being taken up by all the other partitions.
But when I try removing the partitions I get a different error for almost every one:
Error for 1st partition: Mediakit reports partition (map) too small
Error for 2nd partition: Filesystem resize support required, such as HFS+  with Journaling enabled
Error for 3rd partition: Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed
Error for 4th partition: Mediakit reports partition (map) too small
I've been trying to solve this problem for weeks, some help
    would be incredibly appreciated.

Clone your one good partition to an external drive, then boot from the external drive, open Disk Utility on the external drive, select the internal drive, and repartition and reformat it from scratch as a single partition. You probably won't be able to resize the faulty partitions, and I wouldn't depend on things to work properly even if it appeared you had been successful in resizing them.
Once the internal drive is repartitioned and reformatted, clone the external drive back onto it and resume normal operation.

It seems not very clever to me to warn the user with a big red message but neither is the dmcrypt wiki article up to date, nor the manpage seems to be correct. Especially the paragraph in man crypttab
The third field specifies the encryption password. If the field is not
present or the password is set to none, the password has to be
           manually entered during system boot.
is very unclear. I type my passphrase on boot but if I omit the third field, I can't boot. But, perhaps, it is another error in syntax which causes the boot failure....
Another unclear one is if the options in the fourth field are necessary or not.

  • Missing Hard Drive Space After Failed BC Partition

    Hello everyone,
I was just trying to install Windows 7 on my iMac (Late 2013) using the Boot Camp Assistant, but the partition process froze, so I ended up quitting Boot Camp (I know, I know, bad idea).
Now, I seem to be missing about a TB of hard disk space, even though the partition I was trying to create was only about 350 GB. My 3TB Fusion Drive is now showing 1.91 TB of space total. Also - probably related - everything is showing up as "Other", even though it used to be broken up into Audio/Movies/Photos, etc.
I attempted to start into Recovery mode, repaired the disk permissions (there were few problems, if any) and repaired the disk itself (it said that the Mac was fine), and I've looked at Disk Utility both in and out of Recovery mode to see if there's missing space in the partition tab, but it looks like it's just not there.
Strangely, here it recognizes that the disk is 3.12 TB, but I can't adjust the partition size, even in Recovery mode. I tried running Boot Camp again to see if I could just do a quick Windows partition (20 GB) and restore the space, but I get the error that the disk can't be partitioned. I tried doing fsck in Single User mode and logging in with Safe Mode (where I am now), just to see if either would fix the issue - but no luck.
I do have Time Capsule (2TB) so my stuff is backed up, and fortunately my Mac seems to run fine in normal mode, but is there any way to reclaim the "lost" space, or do a system wipe just to get everything back where it should be? This is
Let me know if I can provide any further information, and I appreciate your help!

Problem solved! Ran Disk Utility not in recover mode again, and it identified that the logical size wasn't right. Repair Disk while logged in - and at the upper level "Macintosh HD" on the left sidebar - fixed the issue, and I'm going to not attempt to run Boot Camp again for a while just in case :-p

  • Failing at Partitioning my iMac HD

    Hi Guys,
This is my first time posting so sorry if it is in the wrong section. I am trying to partition my iMac HD for 100GB for Windows XP. The first problem I encounter is this, in Boot Camp Assistant it says this "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. ", then I "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility and it says something has an invalid item count it should be something instead of something. So... I try to boot from the install disk that came with my iMac and it spins for about 15-20 seconds and then spits it out, my iMac reads all other discs. I have tried booting into safe mode and booting up and holding CMD + S and then put fsck -fy, when I do that it says the same as it does in Disk Utility then it says it's repaired but it hasn't. Any help will be MUCH appreciated.
    Thankyou

When you insert the Leopard disc and restart with the C key held down, do you still get to Installer's first screen? Are you able to run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu? When you are doing this, does performance seem normal (for running off the optical drive), or does it stall?
In Disk Utility, when you look at the sidebar, does the internal drive have the +Macintosh HD+ volume indented under it, or is it just the internal drive by itself with no volume under it?
You said that if you select the drive in the sidebar, you are not allowed to do +Repair Disk+ on the +First Aid+ tab? If so, and if there is a volume under the drive, try selecting it (instead of the drive) and going to the +First Aid+ tab. Can you them run +Repair Disk+ ?
If there is no volume under the drive, it is possible that you have a serious hard drive failure.
If you have not already, you should try this procedure to reset SMU (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to unplug everything. When you reconnect just the power cord, if you have been using a crowded or old power strip, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, at least initially for this test. Try powering it up with nothing connected, except the power cord. Is there any improvement?
If not, based on what you described, my guess is that your hard drive has become faulty. If it is also not booting or running normally from the optical drive now, then it may be something else.

  • Reformat/Reinstall Leopard 10.5 after a Failed WIndows Partition

When trying to create a windows partition on my MacBook everything was running successfully and the screen said that it had finished the installation and needed to restart. So i did, but after restarting the Windows disc wanted me to install at the same start up screen as before.
I no longer wish to have this windows partition on my computer and i am at my real issue now. I want to start up in Leopard but the only way for me to get into the Mac OS was to insert my restore disc. I can get to the utilities menu and get to the start up disc option. My options are Windows on "untitled", the Mac OS disc, and Network. But when i go to reinstall the Mac OS there is no drive for me to install on to.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much. I saw a lot of info about CUPS, gutenprint, and samba out there, but not much context to it.
For folks just reading this from google:
The easiest way to add a Windows printer, in most cases, is to check Gutenprint, which is included with OS X, to see if it supports your printer. (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3)
If not, try searching google for "<your printer model> cups driver".
Bring up the add printer dialog under system preferences and right click on a blank space on the toolbar. Choose customize toolbar. Drag the "Advanced" icon onto the toolbar. Then, click it.
Under type, select Windows. Go down to "Print Using" and choose "Select a driver to use...". Pick your driver in the list. "SMB://" should have autofilled in the URL form. From this, you'll add the name of the PC to which the printer is attached. Say you've set its network name as Bob, for example. You'll put "smb://bob", and then you'll add the shared name of the printer. In my case, it's an Epson CX7400, and I've shared it as EpsonCX7400. Keep in mind, Mac OS doesn't like names longer than 12 characters or shares with special characters like $ and @ and things like that. (If you're unsure, you could always just share it from your Windows PC as printer1 or something.) Were that the case, your URL field would read "smb://bob/printer1". If you named it something like mine, "smb://bob/epsoncx7400". If your printer requires a username and password to print, you'll put "smb://<username>:<password>@bob/printer1", substituting your username and password in the <username> and <password> spots respectively.
Afterward, if you've done all that properly, it should work. Hopefully, anyway. It did for me. Well, it showed up anyway. I've not actually tried to print from it, yet.

  • Cfdisk fails on partitioning- bad primary partition

Hello. I'm trying to install Arch Linux on my notebook- Asmobile S96SP.
If I try to use manual disk partitioning, then I see black screen of cfdisk with this error:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partitions ends in the final partical cylinder.
Press any key to exit cfdisk.
I've got just one disk (250GB SATA), and 4 partitions on it.
I want to install Linux on E:.
What's wrong? Someone know how to resolve this problem?
    Thanks!

Ok, I fixed it by remove E: partition to make free space (unattached).
Now i've got the second problem. I hear "peep" from my notebook all the time. It's problem with ACPI, becouse if I disable acpi on startup, then i don't hear nothing. I found this: http://www.inliniac.net/blog/2008/07/25 … state.html
but i don't know how can i add to "options" file 2 processors, and how to update initrd on Arch.
    /proc/acpi/processor/CPU1/
    /proc/acpi/processor/CPU2/
    Thanks for reply.

  • Making partition for Time Machine

I have a 500 drive and I'd to configure Time Machine to use 350 GB for backups, and use the rest for regular storage, how can I do that?

yes - use disk utility to partition the drive (this will erase all the contents of the drive so be sure to backup any thing on it that you want to save) and have TM use the 350 partition (what size is your source drive and how much storage do you have on it to backup?)
