Failed restore

OK. So here's the deal. I have a 13" MBP (running Lion that came installed)that i use for schoolwork. So when the computer got cluttered i decided to install windows too (on a partion, so i had windows side for fun and play, but mac side for school and such) so the first thing i find out i have to do is partion the harddrive. For that i need to format. Would be horrible, but yay. Mac had this awesome feature called time machine or somethin. So i make a backup and make sure it sais its backed up and all. Now i go for format/partion. No biggie. Start Mac holding C with the CD that came with my mac. And bam. I partioned, formated and all that. So now i just go into utilities and restore from backup. But oh noes. Now things start to go wrong.
THe partion is too small for the backup. So i go into utilities and undo my partioning. Now the HDD is back to normal. So i go to restore again and this time it works. By now im thinking i'll go into finder and remove useless crap when its done so that it fits. But NO. At arounf 6-7 percent (and 8-9  retries) it still dont work. Just said unexpected error or something. So now im really ****** off. I go and install completely new (use migration assistant later) but NO. Turns out the CD has Snow Leopard on it and I cant migrate Newer versions of OS X. So by now i am basically ripping my hair off and cursing in every language i know (thought tjis would be easy). Now in Snow Leopard i figure. This must be an old version of Snow Leopard. Should try to update. So i Update and all goes well until the Mac does it's usual post-update install reboot. So it just boots up with a blue screen. All i see is Blue. Yay. Going to try safemode tomorrow (holdig shift).
Tl;DR: Macbook pro goes postal after reinstall/restore attempt.

I have no idea where you got your instructions from. Backup now and completely wipe your disk. Repartition as you want then reinstall Snow Leopard, update to at least 10.6.6 and then download and install Lion. Then migrate your other files and try Bootcamp to install Windows.
Search the forums here for the proper instructions on doing this. What you currently have is a system in a horrible mess.

  • IPod Touch 2G 32GB with White Apple Logo and Failed Restore / Recovery

    My Specifications:
    iPod Touch 32GB 2G
    iPhone OS 3.1.3
2.8 Ghz. Intel Core 2 Duo iMac
    Mac OS 10.5.8
    iTunes 9.0.3 (15)
    Problem:
After updating my iPod Touch to OS 3.1.3, my iPod touch started having sync issues where it would say the sync failed. The backup files stopped being created and the latest version was over two weeks old (from prior to the updated to 3.1.3). After an application became unstable and crashed frequently, I tried to do a reboot by holding the Power & Home buttons until the Apple Logo appeared to begin the reboot process. After waiting for 6 hours, the ipod still had not rebooted but was frozen on the White Apple Logo screen.
    Troubleshooting Steps I’ve Take:
    1. Attempted to follow Apple Frozen iPod Touch and Common Issue Troubleshooting Guide. The iPod will not shut down using the Power Slider function.
    2. Restore via iTunes using the DFU Restore Function (Power Button & Home Button for 10 seconds, releasing the Power Button, followed by plugging in the USB cable while holding the Home Button down). iTunes recognized the ipod at the point and began the restore process. The process took almost 32 hours and when it was completed, the ipod would not boot up by remained with the White Apple Logo. My original attempt was with using a powered USB hub.
    3. Repeated the restore process but by plugging directly into the computer and eliminating all USB devices except keyboard and mouse. Deleted the OS 3.1.3 updated and made iTunes download the file in case it was corrupted.
    4. Rebooted computer between each attempt.
    5. Deleted iTunes and the Apple Mobile Device Services as per Apple Article HT1747. Rebooted the computer and reinstalled iTunes. iTune would not recognized the iPod Touch to do a restore using the DFU method. I’ve retried various timings and versions with the cable plugin, booting with the cable plug in and not plugged in, etc... No effect.
    6. Repeated the above steps on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6. iTunes wouldn’t recognize the iPod.
    7. Repeated the above steps using a different sync cable. iTunes wouldn’t recognize the ipod.
    8. Unplugged the iPod and let it completely drain until the screen went blank for 1 day. When pressing home button the Low Battery / Plug In warning appears. Recharged the battery using a wall plug for 12 hours. Retried the above steps. No change.
What I’ve Eliminated As The Problem Via My Troubleshooting:
    1. Computer Hardware
    2. iTunes Software
    3. Sync Cable
    4. USB Conflicts
What I Need Is A Solution:
    1. Completely wiping my ipod is an acceptable solution at this point. I’ve spent a week working on this and wasted way too much time. Is my iPod trashed thanks to an OS update?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've ready each forum posting involved White Apple Logo Issues and have come up empty. Am I the only persons would is having trouble restoring?
    Thank you,
    Paul

More Troubleshooting Steps For Your Consideration:
I was able to restore back to iPhone OS 2 by using a laptop that had not been synced with my ipod touch previously. When I did the DFU with it, iTunes downloaded OS 2 and it worked.
Then I went back to my iMac and proceeded to install OS 3.1.3 and that seemed to work ok too.
I've been getting the white apple logo of death, however, when I try to sync applications. All seems well, but as it is finishing the ipod touch reboots to the White Apple Logo Screen and stays there. iTunes seems oblivious to this taking place.
During my second rebuild starting with OS 2 and then updating to 3.1.3, it worked again. When I tried to add apps, I only put on a dozen. That worked too. I did get the White Apple Logo Screen of Death once again and I did the third sync to get the rest of my apps in place.
I'm on the third rebuild from version 2. I'm going to try to use an old file I have of 3.1.1 instead of 3.1.3. Also, I'm going to add one application per sync. At least this way I might be able to find out if it is a specific app that is causing the problems.
In my further research, it appears that this bug has been in place since the early days of iPhone OS 2.
All told I've spent over week with my computers tied up working on this problem. I think it would have more cost effective to just buy a new iPod. (I'd rather wait for the 4G version this fall!).
Just in case anyone else has been having issues, that is where I'm at. I'll let you know if I figure this issue out in more detail.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Failed restore from TM, disk now reporting problems.

    Hello,
I have, unfortunately, landed in a bad position... My Macbook was last backed up last May with Time Machine. A few days ago, the internal hard drive in the Macbook went bad and was replaced with a new one by Apple. They installed 10.5.5 on the machine, so the welcome video starts up when I turn it on. At the genius bar, they told me to use the time machine backup option after the welcome video to restore my files. However, when I select that option, the window does not show the external hard drive I use to store the time machine backup.
Since no drive or backup was listed in that window, I assumed that this problem was caused by an incompatibility between 10.5.5 (which Apple installed on the new hard drive) and the older version of the system stored in my TM backups from last May (maybe 10.5.3?). Plus, I can see all the TM backups when I plug the drive into my other computers.
I booted the Macbook off the OS 10.5 DVD, and I selected the Restore from TM Backup option. This quickly pulled up the backup info from the external hard drive, and it began the restore process. Toward the end of the restore, the process failed, and it suggested I restart and try again. I restarted (booting off DVD again) and tried to restore again. This time, it told me that it can't access the files and the disk may have problems. I plugged the disk into another computer and ran "verify" in disk utility. It said "invalid index key," the volume needs to be repaired- Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Here's my problem- I'm not sure that I want to mess with repairing the drive, as I don't want to potentially screw up the TM backup file structure. I don't have another copy of the info in these TM backups, since the original internal hard drive crashed and this is my restore option. Should I use a program like Superduper to make a copy before attempting a repair on the external drive? Is it likely a repair on the drive will screw up the TM backup data? I'm not really sure how to proceed safely.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks for your time.
    ~ Dan

    Hi, Glenn,
Thanks for the suggestions. As an update, I did two clones of the drive using SuperDuper onto two other external drives. Both of those clones were successful, but none of the time machine backup data pulls up through the Leopard DVD, Time Machine itself, or through Migration Assistant. Disk utility finds errors in the data on both of the clones, but fixing the errors doesn't help the situation in any way.
In efforts to clean up the disk errors or pull the data off the drives manually, I have used Disk Warrior, Data Rescue II, File Salvage, and Disk Utility. Unfortunately, none of these apps have worked as a fix. I can't even seem to salvage the individual files to transfer them manually, leading me to believe that Time Machine is a deck of cards when part of the files become corrupted... What is frustrating is that I was able to see all of the backup files when I began the first restore process. Now I can't see them at all. I've never had a problem with the external disk drive, and all the utility programs seem to indicate that the problems are with the files versus the drive.
Any other ideas on how to get these files extracted? Given the 60GB or so of data recorded on the disk, I know the info is sitting there somewhere... I just can't get to it.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Ipad 2- Failed Restore after 5.0. But it tried to backup again. Can I restore to previous backup or is all gone and overwritten?!?!

    This is what I did...
    Got latest Itunes...
9:30pm---Backed up and SYNCed my whole Ipad 2 which was a lil over 8GB onto my computer (LIKE AN HOUR)
**I had 2gb left free on my comp after that backup
Downloaded Ipad 2 (WIFI) direct 5.0 update file. (around 700mb)
    **around 1gb left on comp
    Shift+Restore>Selected the 5.0 update file
    UPDATED to 5.0
    Turned on Ipad
Selected "Restore Ipad", says its going to take 2 hours
Computer basically went to 0gb after an hour. which I dont know why it was trying to backup AGAIN for.
Itunes says restored failed. nothing on the Ipad, still on the "Connect to Itunes" screen. So I unplug n plug again. And it syncs n backsup for like 3 minutes.
I press restore again, it asks to restore to my 12:00midnight BACKUP?!?! not my 930 BACKUP?
Don't see any other option than just to do that one. It restores in about 2 minutes and I'm finally at the homescreen. NOTHING AT ALL except the apps that got synced.
Now I worry all is lost because now my computer says around 6gb free. What happend to my only having 1gb free after my 8 gb backup/sync?
Is there a way to restore from my wanted/initial/previous backup with all my photos n videos and everything??

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

I attempted to restore my iPhone because it was not working very well.  Part way through the process I got an error message saying that the restore had failed with no explaination.  Now my phone does nothing.  The only thing it shows is the icon on the screen with the USB going to the iTunes logo.  My computer no longer recognizes it either.  Please help, this is my only means of communication with my husband whom is working on a fishing boat currently.

Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off. If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

  • Upgrade fail, restore fail!

Tried to upgrade iPhoto to '11 but getting constant hang whilst upgrading library. Decided to restore to iPhoto '09 from Time Machine but now when I try to open iPhoto just get spinning beachball again. Library is in same place (107gb) on HD.

Have you applied the iPhoto 9.1 updater or just the 9.0.1 updater? If you haven't run the latest one do so and repair disk permissions afterward.
If you haven't repaired permissions do so. Also run BatChmod on the *library package* with the settings shown in this screenshot.

If that fails run BatChmod on the application as well.

  • Windows 10 update killed my laptop, P2PP BurnBoot Check Failed( restoration incomplete)

I tryed to update to windows 10, but I was in audit mode and could not, I rebooted my laptop out of audit mode and had to restore some software and settings, the restore failed and gave me this BurnBoot error.
I have already tried resetting the BIOS, changing time, putting it in legacy mode etc, still did not work, please help me!

I suggest to try performing a system recovery but set your expectation that this will remove everything that you have from your laptop and will set it up just like a brand new one again, then if you still have plans of going to WIndows 10 upgrade I strongly recommend to run all updates first through WIndows Update and HP SUpport Assistant Here's the guide to perform System Recovery http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03489643 Hope this helps

  • "Print preset selection failed – restoring previous selection"

Hey, my name is Quin, and I have had a strange problem with InDesign CS5. Suddenly, without warning, or apparant change to my preferences/settings, all my print presets have stopped working. When I attempted to return to them, i get a dialog box that reads "Print preset selection failed. Restoring the previous selection." I'm curious if anyone else has had a problem with the print presets randomly not working. I'm using InDesign CS5 7.0.3 on my MacBook with Mac OS X 10.6.8 and a Brother HL-5340D printer. I thought the print driver might have been corrupt so i deleted and reinstalled it, but to no avail… seems that a number of my print settings are simply unavailable, even if they are still listed.
    Anyone have any insight?
    Thanks so much,
    Quin

Try unplugging and plugging the cables. I would also suggest the you connect the printer to one of the built-in ports rather than a hub, but if you must use a hub, use a powered hub.
Can you delect the printer and print without using a preset? If so, try editing the preset and just reselect the printer.

  • Failed restore to new hardrive

I had to have my hardrive replaced.  I am trying to restore from a time machine back up.  The first time, it failed and I had to start over.  Now, it has stalled overnight at 1 minute remaining, restoring network settings.  What are my options?  I really don't want to turn it off and start all over again.

You don't have much choice but to turn it off.
But you may not have to start over.  See if your Mac will start up normally; if it will, you may have to re-enter your network settings and perhaps a few other things.
If it doesn't start up, or kernel panics, see #E8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Failed Restoration leading to Error 1013

    Hi All,
I've exhausted the searching around the internet to help get my phone working again.
Last night, out of the blue, my phone stopped having service (iPhone 4 CDMA Verizon) and said I needed to restore it using iTunes.
When I plugged it in, iTunes said it was not able to restore at this time, try again later.
I tried again for hours afterwards. I was on the phone with Verizon and Apple and both parties weren't really able to help me over the phone.
I did everything that was told to me. Hold Power/Home simultanouesly, trying several different Macs, Macbooks, and PCs, reinstall iTunes, etc..
I then decided to put it into DPU mode which got me somewhere but not a lot. It started downloading the software back onto my phone and what not but then Error 1013 pops up. This also happened on my Macbook Pro, my friend's Macbook Pro, the college PC and two college-owned iMacs; all spat back that error message.
My personal Macbook does not have the gs.apple.com under the hosts file that everybody keeps talking about.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what is wrong/ how I could possibly try fixing this before I head out to the Apple Store?

Then i Stopped NCS before i took a new backup of the database.
After that i importet the data into the new CPI 1.4 without errors, and the server is running smooth.

  • Iphone failed restore, HELP!

Deep breath!.....Few weeks ago i noticed a few problems starting with my iphone 3gs. First thing was that music that previously played fine stopped playing (but was still playing in Itunes) then video's taken on the iphone itself wouldn't play desite the fact they had peviously, it said the format wasn't supported? Anyway at the same time itunes started crashing when syncing with the phone occasionally, this seemed to happen after i upgraded to 10.3....so i uninstalled (as apple instruct you to) and reinstaled 10.2.2 which had been fine, but the issue was the same. Anyway tonight it synced ok so i decided to do a system restore to see if that would solve the issues with the music and the videos.  The restore got so far through (about 1/4 on the phone progress bar) then it just stopped working, there was no error message and itunes itself didn't crash, the restore just stopped working. I left it for 45 mins, turned off my firewall and AV but nothing at all was happening so i disconnected the phone and then an error message (14) popped up, all i can now see on the phone screen is the apple sign and the task bar up to where it was when i disconnected. Anyway i decided to once again uninstall itunes (properly again) and reinstall 10.3.1 to see if that was any good. Now when i plug the phone in it doesn't even load itunes up automatically and isn't even recognised in Windows (7 64 bit). Just nothing at all seems to happen, although the drivers seem to be there when i checked the system settings. I've been to the services screen in windows and the apple mobile device and ipod service settings are all correct so i'm now totally stumped! Any ideas?!

    Hi Jeff,
It sounds like you want to unlock your iPhone and tried to restore it but ran into an issue with that process. If your carrier gave you a new SIM, you can unlock the iPhone without restoring it as shown in the first article below. If you do not have another SIM or just want to resolve the restore issue, try the suggestions in the second article.
