  • Optical drive no longer mounts blanks after erasing dvd-rw

hi, hopefully someone can help with this -
new macbook pro (couple months old)
i've used the optical drive twice, to burn onto a couple maxell dvd+rw discs - this worked fine.
today, i put one of the discs i'd previously used in, hit "erase" in disk utility ...
since then, the drive won't mount or recognize any blank media ... (the drive just hums for a bit, then nothing)
i tried the erased DVD-RW disc in another mac, it mounted fine - so the problem's not the discs ....
the optical drive seems to mount old data DVD-R's, authored DVDs, and CD's just fine ... but it now won't mount any blank media at all (whether CD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD-R)
weird - it's like erasing a DVD+RW has somehow wiped the drive's ability to mount fresh, blank discs...
is it possible the erase operation busted something in the drive ... maybe that kind of operation uses part of the hardware mechanism that only affects the reading of blank media ? or could this be a software problem?
i tried resetting pram and repairing perms, this had no effect.
here's the spec of the optical drive :
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875:
    Firmware Revision: DA09
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

ok, just to add to this -
i made a small install of OSX.5.2 (from the MBP install disc) on a FW drive, and booted from that - and lo and behold, blank media is recognized ...
... so this points to a software problem ...

  • Optical Drive is Reading CDs and DVDs & Writing CDs but not Writing and Erasing DVDs!

Product Name & Number: Compaq Presario CQ60-101AU
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
Error Msg: Shows Reading Error at the end of burning DVD using Cyberlink Power2Go 5.5, Nero 11, Ashampoo Burning Studio 11
    Description:
When reading and writing CD+R, everything works perfect. And Reading DVD also working perfect. The problem is while Writing DVD+R, DVD+RW and Erasing DVD+RW. When using burning software or the windows in-built burning, at the end it shows reading error. And While erasing also same problem. In the DVD, there are only some dark circles/lines with gap and doesn't look like normal written DVDs.
Steps tried out (but in vain)
    1. Used different burners
    2. Used Superblank
    3. Uninstalled and Reinstalled Chipset drivers
    4. Formatted the whole HDD and Reinstalled OS
Please Help! Actually where is the problem? And how to fix it?

If you have an upgrade disc, then you can do a clean install as long as there is a Windows OS on the drive.
I have also done a clean install form an upgrade disc to on a new drive and it still works.
Glad the MoBo's doing well !    What kills them is if you do allot of gaming, the MoBo can't take the heat. The cooling system just isn't up to the task.

iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install

  • Locked Install Disk, Fails to Erase or Partition

For starters, I was having issues with the logic board/graphics of my 2007 Macbook Pro, (Model # A1226), currently running Mac OS X 10.8, (Mountain Lion). I managed to find a replacement logic board which I successfully installed. The laptop ran much smoother on OS X 10.7 (Lion) and that's what I've been trying to downgrade to, and that's where my problem continues.
I've got a downloaded install image on a usb stick, the file is "InstallESD.dmg". At some point, I was having issues with every option and did a recovery/restore of the hard drive from the usb stick. Surprisingly, at startup it brings me to the "Mac OS X Utilities" options which shows Lion being available as an install option, however after that point of selecting it, I get the message that the disk is locked. That is most likely because I restored the hard drive from the usb drive containing the bootable installer.
Whenever I try to partition or erase the drive, I get a "Fail to Erase" or "Partition Fail" message through Disk Utility. Even if I do a Cmd + R and try to reboot from the Recovery Disk for 10.8.5, (putting me back into Mountain Lion), I still get a "Locked Install Disk" message leaving me nowhere but stuck.
Ideally, I'd like to get back to Lion. I'm fine with erasing the hard drive, I have all my necessary files backed up, just not through Time Machine. I've also got what I thought was the bootable copy of Lion on the USB drive, but when I try to boot from there, the laptop is in a constant loading cycle with the apple logo replaced by one of those "no" symbols, (circles with the diagonal line), so I assume I didn't set it up correctly as a boot disk.

I think our problem is also hardware failure although without re-imaging a working surface pro 3 I can't be sure.
I tried what imfusio suggested in this thread.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d31384bc-4e96-4a5b-a400-637bd6006d81/failure-5456-unable-to-determine-destination-disk-partition-and-or-drive-surface-pro-3?forum=mdt
Unfortunately the deployment failed with the same ZTI Error - Unhandled error returned by ZTIDISKPART:
    Object required (424)
I then rebooted into WinPE and ran diskpart, I could see the two volumes (EFI and OSDisk). I then tried to format the OS disk volume using diskpart. I got a paramater is incorrect error and the disk was no longer visible with a 'list disk' command. So it's
like the format is putting the disk offline. I'm going to try restore one of these surfaces, apply all firmware updates then re-image. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.

  • Can't erase DVD-RW anymore

My MBP is refusing to erase DVD-RW discs anymore. I'm running 10.5.2 and it last worked (on this specific disc) under 10.5.1.
I've tried erasing a couple of discs, using both Disk Utility (quick and complete) and Disco. It appears to work properly, but it never finishes and comes up with the "You've inserted a blank disc" anymore. And when I go to the finder and click back on the disc, the original files are still there. I've also tried it before and after a full reboot with no joy.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried Toast? I use it regularly to transfer files to and from work. I rarely have problems erasing a DVD-RW. I have Toast 8. Go to the Recorder menu in the application, insert the disk you want to erase and then select Erase after the disk mounts. If you pick "Quick Erase" you must use Toast to burn the data for the next use.

  • Trouble erasing DVD+RW

Has anyone else had trouble erasing DVD+RW media (or any rewritable media for that matter)? I have been trying to recycle a disk that I used to store iPhoto pics on but Disk Utility would not erase it. It pretended to do so then when I re-inserted the disk it still had all of the original data on it. I tried Quick Erase as well as Full Erase with the same results. I then tried erasing a CD-RW and ran into the same problem. Nearly exasperated I tried it with the CD-RW again and it worked. I backed up some iPhoto pics to the CD-RW then I figured I would try the DVD+RW again. Miraculously it worked this time.
Does anyone have a clue as to what might be happening?
    -Shawn

What dvd burner do you have???

  • Macbook Pro disc drive failing to burn DVD-R.

I am using a 2007, 17" Macbook Pro with 10.6.8. My drive information in System Profiler reads as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J:
      Firmware Revision:          FBZ8
      Interconnect:          ATAPI
Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:          2048 KB
      Reads DVD:          Yes
      CD-Write:          -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
I am trying to burn an .mp4 video to a DVD in order to test the disc for playback. When I insert the disc, it appears first in the Finder as a blank DVD. I click and drag the video to the DVD and hit "Burn." What follows is an error message:
"'Untitled DVD'" can't be burned because the disck is read-only and can't be modified (error code 0x80020042)."
After that, the disc ejects, and I am back at square one.
I have looked online for similar cases and suggested solutions, but nothing has worked yet. I have verified and repaired my disk permissions via Disk Utility, tried to burn multiple times with different, fresh DVD-Rs, purchased brand new DVD-Rs, and even tried changing the permissions manually via the "Info" panel.
I do not have iDVD or any other third party DVD burning software. In the past, I used iDVD and these very same DVD-Rs to burn a number of student films for playback. At that time, the process was very simple and worked as one might expect it to.
I am wondering if I should just get iDVD or another third party software, but I am reluctant to, because I would think that the OS' built-in burning capability ought to work just as well. Of course, I could easily be mistaken.
    Please help. Thank you.

    Some clarification:
I am not trying to burn a data disc. If that is what I just described, I was unaware that I was attempting to burn a data disc. I am trying to burn a video DVD for playback on a DVD player. If you or anyone here are trying to tell me that I cannot burn a video DVD by performing the process I described, then I will continue to attempt to use the third party software I downloaded instead.
    Further clarification:
The problem does not appear to be with the discs. I began testing this issue using Memorex DVD-Rs that I already own. Until today, I had barely touched the stack. However, because it was technically possible that I was using several coasters that I had forgotten about, I went out and bought some additional DVD-Rs - the Verbatims. It is highly unlikely that both the Memorex stack I already owned and the Verbatim discs I just purchased are both duds. I know for a fact that the Memorex discs should work because I have several archived DVD videos on the very same discs.
The real problem appears to be with the drive and how it is reading the discs. For some reason, it is recognizing them as "read-only" and/or not blank, as System Profiler has shown:
      Media:
      Type:          DVD-R
      ID:          CMC MAG. AM3
      Blank:          No
      Erasable:          No
      Overwritable:          No
      Appendable:          Yes
      Write Speeds:          2x, 4x, 8x
I have attempted to Repair Disk Permissions twice - that has not solved the issue. I am going to attempt an SMC reset next, and if that fails, I will attempt to Repair Disk via the install DVD. Failing all of those options, I guess I'm going to have to visit a Genius Bar.
Thank you all again. Please try to stay with me as I continue handling this issue, as I will provide updates.

  • The update installation on my iPod touch failed and erased everything.

I plugged in my iPod touch (1st generation)into my computer and opened iTunes. A message popped up saying that there was a new update for my iPod, so i clicked on the download and install button. I downloaded the update and while it was installing, another message popped up saying the installation failed. so I was like ok I'll just click on the download again and reinstall it. But now my iPod wasn't showing on iTunes. I disconnected it and reconnected it and my iPod still didn't show. Then I noticed that the download wasn't there either. I turned on my iPod and all it showed was a picture with a connection cord pointing up to the iTunes logo. I think that the failed update installation must have completely erased my iPod touch's software. I have tried looking for the update download all over my computer but found nothing. what do I do now? Is there a way for me to download the software again or something? thank you

Thanks Jason, I will try the troubleshooting steps. Will they still work even if my iPod touch isn't even being recognized as an iPod by iTunes or my computer?
If the iPod is not recognized and cannot be restored from the other user account, try the tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1852
You can quickly isolate the issue by trying to restore from another computer.
If the issue is not present on another computer try the tips in the article above.
If the iPod touch has the same issue on another computer, it may need repair.

  • Satellite P200-1B6: Sound Driver update fails and HD-DVD Player doesn't work

I have just bought a Satellite P200-1B6 laptop and spent the day installing the updates recommended by the TEMPO program. One of these was a Sound Driver update from RealTek but on running this it fails about 80% of the way through with an error: 'Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !!'.
Now the Toshiba HD DVD player fails to start with an error 'Unable to output the video to an external device.
Please switch your display device by pressing the Fn + F5 keys after ending the application'. I've tried this but it seems to have no effect.
I'm now regretting starting to update the installed drivers. Should I try to rebuild the machine using the recovery discs or is there another solution that someone has found? Or have others found the upgrade works?
    Any advice welcome

Last month I upgraded my PC Satellite P200 (BIOS, Driver ATI HD2600, Package VAP and HD-DVD Player).
But after this update, I was no longer be able to read my HD-DVDs
Error message was: "Unable to send the video to an external device. Please turn off the display device."
The problem was much of the update Realtek R1.76 (Realtek Sound Driver - 6.0.1.547 - 20/11/07) currently proposed on the site toshiba.
Indeed, the P200-1DE is equipped with Realtek ALC268 Audio Codec.
The latest update of this codec is R1.89. I downloaded from the site Realtek and it has allowed me to solve the problem.
    [http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level= 4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false]
I have no problem since that last update

  • Media Coder Failing with MPEG2-DVD and H.264 Blu-Ray Encode

I am useing Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 8.0.0.173 build.
    I am a CC subscriber.
I am importing a Premiere Pro CC 2014 timeline.
I also have Premiere Pro CS6, Photoshop CC and CS6, Encore CS6, Lightroom 5, Indesign CC and CS6 installed.  Just updated all apps from the cloud.
When exporting the timeline to MPEG2-DVD I get the failed status.
In the text note section this is the result: MXF decode error in "J:\Murray-Gross Wedding\CLIPS001\AA0068\AA006802.MXF" at frame 16339. Frame 16316 was substituted.
    I had several frames substituted.
I tried both the Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration and I also tried the software only version.
    The original footage is;
    MXF File details:
Wrapper type: MXF OP1a (type: SingleItem SinglePackage MultiTrack Stream Internal)
    File generated by: CANON, XF100
    MPEG-2 422 Long-GOP
I was able to export the timeline to an avi file from Pro CC 2014.  But P Pro told me that the export had failed.  When I checked the folder though the avi file was there.
I am running Windows 7 home premium.
I need to make a DVD of this footage.  And would prefer not to reformat the avi file I created.  Thanks in advance.

Do you get encode complete with Errors or are you getting encode failed (no encoded file)?  The reason frames were substituted is because the source file had errors or other problems.  So during import, PPro and AME substitute bad frame with adjacent good frame and continue to import.  But if there are way too many bad errors and source is too corrupted, it may not be able to import it correctly and won't be able to export.  so let us know if you get exported file and you are just curious what the error message was or if you don't get encoded files going to MPEG2-DVD at all.

  • OS X Mountain Lion Recovery - reinstall failed with erase reinstall

iMac mid-2007 Mac OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2. Grey screen on start up (day before got three messages that HP printer software update was available but no software could be found when I tried to update. Other than that iMac was working fine the day before).
Did all steps recommended for Grey Screen on Start Up and did not fix it. Used Command R - Disk Utility to try to repair the hard drive. Disk Utility said it could not repair the disk, to back up files and reformat the disk. From the Recovery System menu, selected Disk Utility - Erase to erase hard drive. Erase worked. Quit Disk Utility. Selected Reinstall Mac OS X from the Recovery System menu. System says "downloading additional components" and it will take 3 hours to download, even though we have highspeed broadband (Comcast) internet. Left it to continue overnight. Came back in the a.m. and giant warning message says Reinstall Failed-Contact Software Manufacturer or Restart to Try Again. Restart said Disk Utility could not repair the hard drive. Disk Utility said hard drive was unmounted and Mount would not mount it.
Shut down and started again with Command R. Used Disk Utility - Erase to erase the hard drive again. Erase seemed to work again. Hard drive mounted. Quit Disk Utility and selected Reinstall Mac OS X from the Recovery System menu. Once again waiting an estimated 2 1/2 hours for additional components to download.
Am I missing something? If it fails again this time, is there anything else I can do or must I take it in to be repaired (no longer covered under Apple Care Protection Plan due to age of iMac).

Well, if Disk Utility cannot repair the drive, one other option is to use Disk Warrior ($$). That would mean having to boot from their CD or having it installed on an external bootable clone and trying it from there. But, I'm guessing that your hard drive is about to fail (permanently) - nothing to do with the software.
You might want to consider making an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar - help there is free unless you need a repair or hard drive replacement - you'd need to pay for that of course. But at least you'd get their diagnosis; they have better testing equipment that a consumer has access to.

  • After failed installation from DVD unable to uninstall to retry - Error message 2343

Having started installation of Elements 12 from DVD it failed before completing the installation and then rolled back the last two items on the installation list (out of 3). Now when running the DVD again it endeavours to do an uninstall before trying a reinstall. However it is unable to complete the uninstall process and fails every time with the Error 2343 - specified path is empty. Suggested options such as deleting temporary files and doing a clean boot produce exactlly the same result. This is on a Windows 7 Pro x64 PC with 8GB RAM and an i3 processor and 500GB disc with over 200GB free. It would seem that the only solution to remove the software is to edit the registry, as the standard uninstall process is clearly not going to complete. I therefore need to know what registry edits are needed in order to remove the programme complately from the PC. Otherwise it is clear that it is never going to be possible to install the software, which makes it rather a waste of money!

I had already tried that I'm afraid, without success. I therefore tried the installation on a different PC, also Windows7 Pro x64 but with different hardware (AMD proc., different disk controller and different DVD ROM but also with 8GB RAM and plenty of available disk space). The only other common parameter to note is that both PCs are running Bitdefender antivirus software. However I allow the AV software to completely check the Photoshop Elements 12 DVD ROM before starting the install process, as this can take severla minutes, so that the AV software does not need to access the DVD ROM drive during the install process. The software installation failed during the installation of the Shared Technologies scetion exactly as on the previous PC. I can only conclude that either there is a problem with Windows 7 Pro x64 or Bitdefender compatibility and that it will not be possible to install this software on either of these PCs in its current form. There has to be a limit as to how much time one is willing to spend on overcoming an incompatibility like this. I think I will have to find an alternative photo editing product (the Serif trial product seems to load without any problems on the original PC!). Thank you anyway for your help and suggestions but I think in this case we have hit a brick wall.

  • How to erase DVD-Ram disk

I have a half dozen DVD-Ram disks (from my now-dead DVR). They mount on the Desktop and I can see the contents (VRO and associated files). I am exploring the various Toast, Streamclip (etc.) options to play/rescue the files. Once that is done, how can I erase (and rewrite/reuse) the disks? Neither Toast 8 nor Disk Utility seem happy with formatting/erasing this media. Any ideas?

Ah,... makes sense. Thanks! And here's what it says [below].
So, it seems to say I cannot "erase" ... but I can "overwrite" (??), which is splitting a hair finer would have occurred to me.
Okay. Then, how would I "overwrite" the files -- what application could I use to do this? Toast? Other??

  • DVD-RW fails to format DVD Studio Pro 4!

The Superdrive on my MacPro 2.8GHz 8 core fails to write to DVD-RW discs using DVD Studio Pro 4. The Superdrive has no problem writing to DVD-Rs.
Even trying to burn data onto the DVD-RW through Toast or through a Burn folder on the desktop (Snow Leopard).
i urgently need to burn the data onto a DVD-RW. What do you reckon i should do?

The problem could also be your drive. I would try a different drive or computer if you can. You can also look at "About This Mac" disc burning and make sure your drive supports -RW, but your machine is new enough that that problem is very unlikely. But you could also try +RW, in case your drive is on the edge of failing.
I ran a test with several drives and media several years ago, burning at higher bit rates (HDDVD) and ended up replacing a "superdrive" with a much more reliable $30 drive from Other World Computing. Verbatim was by far the best brand that i had for my tests, and dual-layer discs had more problems than single layer.
