Failed to open pdf files

Hi,
I guess since the latest os/safari upgrade, the application has failed to open pdf files on several occasions. It's one of those files that you have to download then I guess the safari or adobe reader opens it... The beach ball keeps spinning and safari has to be force quit. I have the latest safari and adobe reader.
Can someone please help, thanks.

Why not let Safari/Preview handle your PDF files? Tiger offers this alternative. To do so, remove the Adobe Reader plug-in from your Internet Plug-in folder (may be in either your Main or User Library folder). When Safari encounters a PDF file, it will then automatically open the file in Safari using Previews PDF format.
Another alternative (which includes removing the Adobe plug-in) is to use PDF Browser Plug-in. This plug-in is freeware for private use.

  • Fail to open PDF file. Error for trying to paste in object.

So occasionaly, i will paste in a PDF into my InDesign document and this error will pop up, Fail to open PDF file.  It's not like im opening
the file im just trying to paste it in.  I try other pdf files and the same error comes up.  Usually this error does not happen when i am pasting in
PDF's into my document but when one error comes up, no PDF's will work.  I have to resave my file into another format and then it will work.
What is up with these errors that happen sometimes?

  • Acrobat XI suddenly fails to open PDF files

I have installed Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows 7 computer. It has worked perfectly well for several weeks but from shutting down the computer last Thursday and starting this morning, I am unable to open any PDF files or open the Acrobat application. Creating PDF files from other applications such as Office still works but I cannot open these files nor any others to view them. No other changes were made to the system between working and failure. I have tried a repair from the disk and a re-install following an Adobe clean but nothing has changed. I wonder if this is anything to do with the expiry of the trial period which is how I originally installed XI before I purchased a disk with serial number.

    Hi elyP,
The expiry of the trial has nothing to do with this as you can simply enter the purchased serial number to convert the trial into full version.
Is Acrobat updated to the latest patch v11.0.09?
Do you get any errors when you try to open a pdf?

  • Preview fails to open PDF files in Safari

Can anyone tell me why Preview will not now open PDFfiles inside Safari? I used to have Adobe PDF installed to open all PDF files but I have since removed it in preference to Preview. Preview opens all other PDF files just fine but it seems unable to work with Safari... weird!

  • Acrobat Pro X fails to open PDF files after new install

    Hi
We have installed Adobe Design Premium CS5.5 and the issue we have is that when you try to open a PDF document directly nothing happens, the egg times displays for 1-2 seconds then disapears. We have to open Acrobat Pro from the start menu and let it open, then close it again, when we then try again to open a PDF document directly it now opens.
Why wont Adobe open the document directly without having to open the program first?
We are a school and have Adobe Design Premium installed on 500 computers.
    Thanks

Usually related to file associations in Windows. Right click on the PDF and select the Open With option and select Acrobat. Be sure to check "always open with."

  • Failed to open PDF file when placing a PDF in Indesign CS5

I am also having an issue when I am able to place the PDF that the bleed isn't showing up and the crops aren't either

The failure dialog usually means the import options are set to crop to one of the options that isn't defined for that particular file, and changing the crop options to one that isn't grayed out should work. To show bleed and marks, first they must be present in the PDF, and second your choice of crop option must be large enough to include them. Media would be my choice for that.

  • I cannot open pdf files from one supplier when using Adobe Reader but I can using another Viewer

I cannot open pdf files from one supplier when using Adobe Reader but I can open it if using Google PDF viewer or another viewer. The Adobe reader gives the error "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired" when I try to open the file. The version of Adobe Reader is 10.1.7, however I have tried other versions and they all fail the same way.  I have tested on a number of different PC's in different networks and all fail using Adobe Reader but work using alternate viewer. Also the PC's will open a PDF from any other source.

Newer Reader versions are more strict than older versions (and other PDF viewers).  If certain minimum requirements are not met, Reader will tell you that the PDF is damaged.  This can happen when a document was created with software that does not adhere to PDF standards, or when the file was damaged during a download or email transmission.
You should contact the creator of these PDFs.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro failed to print pdf file

I downloaded adobe acrobat pro and started the 30 trial version just a few minutes ago.
I could open files through adobe acrobat and convert word files to pdf, but when i tried converting a publisher file it could not go through. An error popped up which read "Adobe PDF printer failed to print pdf file".
The publisher file I am hoping to convert to pdf is a 21 page panorama article. It contains lots of images and a variety of font types.
I do not know other alternatives for solving this issue.
Your help will be very much appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Erik

It seems to be that Adobe Acrobat virtual printer is not properly installed on your PC or you are not selecting Adobe PDF printer to print PDF document. Checkout the below screen shot to see proper printer.
After trying this if you have same problem you may trt some other virtual printer that easily convert or print any file as PDF, you may checkout here.

  • Firefox won't open PDF files after I removed older version of PDF-xChange Viewer and installed the lastest version of PDF-xChange Viewer. MS Explorer which I am now force to use works OK. I have checked the Applications window in Tools/Options and it l

Firefox no longer opens PDF files. Explorer works OK. I have checked the Applications window in the Tools/Options and it says I am using PDF-xChange viewer....It just does not do anything. I get the message in the Download Error window which says...."could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Is the same error which I get when I attempt to open a PDF file on a webpage using the Firefox browser....Explorer works OK so I am now forced to Explorer to read PDF files via a browser.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After removing a old copy of PDF-xChange Viewer and updating to the last version

The error message suggests that the file (pdf) that you're trying to download cannot be saved in the folder Firefox tries to save it in.
This can be due to several things - it could be a non-existing folder (could be a problem with the updated application), the hard drive could be too full to store the file (less likely if you can generally surf the net without error messages) or it could contain an error.
To complicate things a little further, it seems to me that you have (at least) 3 different PDF-handling plugins in Firefox from different programs:
    PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.3.2"
    Zeon PDF Plugin For Mozilla
This shouldn't matter too much, thou, as it will most likely simply use either the latest installed or the first one it finds when looking up associations for files of type 'pdf'.
First, in Tools > Options... > tab General > section File download, select "Save files in" and Browse your way to a (non-writeprotected!) folder on a drive where you're certain there is enough free space - like the Desktop folder to make the files end up on your Windows desktop.
Second, under Applications as you mention yourself, find all document types related to PDF files, and set these to one of the programs. Check the entire list to be sure there isn't one hiding under one of the other programs' document types (Adobe Acrobat document, PDF X-Change and Zeon).
Restart Firefox, and try opening a PDF again.
If it fails once more, try changing the documents again to one of the other programs, like "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)".
If it STILL fails, change it to simply "Save file". Then you can simply browse your way to the download folder with Windows Explorer, and doubleclick the PDF file to see which program actually handles PDF files as default on the machine, and if it works properly.
If Firefox flatly refuses to save the PDF files in a folder which you're certain both exist and has space for the file, some (probably security related) program is most likely interfering with Firefox, preventing it in storing PDF files on the system.

  • I'm not able to open PDF files in Adobe Reader XI.

I recently updated to Adobe Reader XI and now I can't open any of my PDF documents or PDF e-mail attachments.  When I click on a document I now get a window that asks if I want to allow this file to open.  I click yes and get a monstrousity the likes I've never seen.  It blacks out my screen for a couple seconds and then I get a mixture of my desktop, task bar, and a window wanting to know if I want to open this with Protected Mode disabled.  It only fills 3/4 of the screen, the items all all blown-up in size, and are distorted.  In playing with this I have gotten notes that I have an "Incompatable Application" and "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDS Server".  On occasion I will get an Adobe Reader screen that is completely greyed out with no content in it and after a couple of seconds it goes off.  Other times I got the window about Protected Mode and I've clicked on to disable it but that doesn't work either.  I removed Adobe Reader XI and re-installed Adobe Reader X and I still have the same problem which I did not have before.  I 'm running Windows 7 Professional and have McAfee anti-virus, which I have disbled on one occasion during download and that I still had the same problem.  I went to program files to find the End User License Agreement and try to see if I needed to click on 'Accept" but it tells me the file does not exist.  I even tried using System Restore to take me back to before I did the upgrade to Adobe Reader XI and I still have this problem.  I'm at the end of my knowledge level and because these files are needed in my business I'm only able to operate at about 50%.

  • Unable to open PDF files in IE 10

I'm using IE 10.0.9200.17028 and Adobe Reader 11.0.07. When accessing any website in IE 10 and clicking on a link to PDF file, a dialogue box opens that prompts to open or save PDF file. On selecting any of these options, operation fails. Looking at the name of the file in dialogue box, it appears that file name has become _pdf instead of .pdf
When I select Open, a blank IE window opens. On selecting Save/Save As, I see message ".._pdf file couldn't be downloaded". I cannot open PDF in IE 10.
Issue cannot be replicated when I use Chrome or Firefox. Also, I'm able to open any PDF file from my local drive.
In IE 10, I  have checked Tools > Manage Add-ons > Toolbars and extensions > select "Run without permissions" in Show section > Adobe PDF Reader. Its status is enabled.
Any idea how to be able to open PDF files in IE 10?

This is probably a fault with the specific pdf file. If this is the case contact its creator. Can you download pdf files available on the Adobe website?

  • Failed to open pdf error on every document

Today I came and started placing pdf documents in Indesign CS3 like I always do, and suddenly I start getting "failed to open pdf" errors on every pdf file I try and place. I have tried all the suggested tactics of selecting show import options, changing the crop to bounding box, etc. Nothing working.
I also tried to open the pdf in acrobat and export into a different format or optimize it using the pdf optimizer, but when I do that I get gobbly **** text on the pdf. See screenshots
The only workaround that works is to save as a raster image. But this is incredibly time consuming. I also tried importing these same files into Indesign cs 4 and I get the same errors. I am wondering if this is a system wide issue. Any ideas or suggestions?
I noticed all these pdf were created using cs4 and above. Not sure if this helps.

Hold the Shift key as you click Place or turn on Show Import Options in the Place dialogue.
I get this from time to time. Here’s what I think happens: You placed a PDF with Import Options showing so you could select a different crop method, like bleed. This becomes the new default import option for PDF files. But if you import a file with no bleed data InDesign gives an error message instead of either jumping to import options or telling you the default crop options are unavailable for this file. I would call it a bug. I have encountered it from at least version 4 (aka CS2).

  • Opening .pdf files in IE 10 & 11

We have online modules in an LMS.  Learners cannot open the .pdf attachments in these modules if they are using IE 10 or 11 as their browser.
There is lots of discussion of this problem in other forums and fairly sophisticated solutions have been offered to individuals making enquiries on this issue e.g. making changes to the registry.
My problem is that many of our learners are in agencies where computers are networked and they are not Admin on their computers.  Their tech people will not allow downloading a different browser, making changes to IE settings nor making changes
in their registry i.e. any of the offered suggestions re overcoming the opening .pdf files problem.
Is their something simple anyone could suggest to allow restricted IE 10 & 11 users to open .pdf's on a website?
    Thanks.
    Judy

    Hi Judy,
The following are the main reasons why PDF files cannot be displayed:
    1. Security settings. Internet Explorer security settings may block the PDF from lauching successfully.
    2. Failed installation of the PDF viewer.
    4. One of your add-ons that causing this.
    3. Incompatiblity with the design of a website. Some websites are specifically designed to use Acrobat for displaying PDF files. These sites will not work with PDF.
Solution 1: Ensure that the Internet Explorer security settings are not set to high. Also disable enhanced protected mode.
Solution 2: Make sure you have the correct PDF reader add-ons and set to correct settings.
Solution 3: Manage add-ons in Internet Explorer:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/manage-add-ons#ie=ie-10-win-7
Solution 4: Use compatibility mode (go to tools --> Compatibility View Settings) to check the issue.
Since people unable to make changes on settings, you may consider to contact the IT administrator or someone with admin rights to fix the issue.
    Hope it helps.

  • IOS8 fails to display pdf-files in browsers

When i try to open pdf files from a website in the browser (both Chrome and Safari for iOS) the pdf often will not load. I only get the grey background and the question to open in iBooks. Pushing open i iBooks does not help. The pdf never loads at all. The problem is not consistent and I have failed to identify the pattern of under what conditions it happens and when it does not.

    Any suggestions?
    @Kathors

I don't have any problem displaying those PDF files with Safari on either my iPad Air 2 or iPhone 5 which are both on iOS 8.1.2.
Perhaps the problem is dependent on whatever else you are doing in the browser.
