Failed to play test tone

When ever I try to play any sound, nothing happens.  When I go into the control panel and double click on the “sound” icon, it shows my speakers.  And when click on my sound device or speakers, and hit test, the message I get it "failed to play test tone".
Now for some background. 
1. I had a different soundcard that was doing the same thing, but I thought maybe it just "went bad", so I bought a new one.  I’ve installed it with no problem.
2. Yes, all the drivers are up to date.  I've run Windows update numerous times and I've double checked the driver version against the one on the manufactures website - they are the same.  Everything is up to date.
3. The device manager can see my speakers/sound card and it says its working.
4. I started out on another forum "Media foundation development - Re:Vista/No Sound/Failed to play test tone" and read the whole thread, did everything it told me to, and I even e-mail Microsoft to get a hotfix.  I installed the hotfix, to no avail.  Nothing has changed, my sound still does not work.
5. The posters/answers at the above thread said they weren't really audio experts and were directing everyone to this thread.

    I followed the following steps:
        * using regedit, go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\AutoLogger\Audio and change the “Start” value from 0 to 1.
        * Reboot the machine
        * Try to play an audio file.
        * Post a link to the generated log file which you can find in: %WINDIR%\system32\LogFiles\Audio
    but don't know where to post the resulting AudioSrv.Evm.001 file. It's also not human readable and I can't find what utility parses it for reading.
    **Another update**
    Still can't read the EVM. logparser 2.2 can't parse it.

    Upon your description, I see that you have done a lot of research and tests. Unfortunately, none of these troubleshooting works.
    Based on my experience, this issue related to "failed to play test tone" can be related to several reasons. It also includes hardware defect. I am confusing why Dell confirms that the issue is related to Operating System. Could you let me know what operation Dell had troubleshot with you?
    Meanwhile, here I just provide more troubleshooting except what you performed. If it doesn't work, I may also need to recommend that you contact Dell for support.
    1. Microsoft has released a Hotfix to troubleshoot related to "Failed to play test tone".

    3. I noticed that this issue occurred not long ago, I may need to suggest that you perform a System Restore to the previous restore point when the computer without any problem.
    System Restore
    ==============
    1)     Please click on Start and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Windows Backup.
    2)     Click Restore on the left pane.
    3)     Choose Basic Restore.
    4)     Follow the wizard and click Next.
    5)     If you would like to restore everything in the backup, we can check the box “Restore everything in this backup” on the top of the window.
    6)     We can also browse and choose certain files and folders to restore. Then, click Next.
    7)     Then choose the folder to save the recovered files and click Next.
    8)     When we see a “Restore is complete!” message, click Finish.
    Meanwhile, as I know, I'm afraid that there is no other way to look at EVM file except Windows Driver Kit. Maybe there are some third-party software that out of my mind can look at EVM files, you may need to perform more research on Internet.

  • No HDMI Audio, Failed to Play Test Tone, Can't Change Default Playback Device

    Hello, I'm experiencing some real trouble with my HP Pavilion dv6-2160us (with the i3-330M, no dedicated graphics) Windows 7-64 bit, SP1 PC, and I would greatly appreciate some assistance.
    I've created a new thread because, despite the fact that many other people have experienced a problem similar to this and have posted what worked for them, nothing has worked for me.
    The Problem(s):
    My main problem is that I cannot get any audio to play from my PC to my HDMI HDTV.
    When I plug my HDMI cable into my PC and TV, the TV is recognized in Playback Devices, but nothing can play to it.
    When I try to test the TV in playback devices, I get a "Failed to play test tone" error.
    Additionally, I'd like to mention some other odd behavior that I think may be a part of the main problem.
    In Playback Devices, I cannot change anything. I can't disable or enable a device, I can't set default playback or communication devices, and I can't save changes inside device properties. Every time I try to change something, like the default playback device, nothing happens or the changes are immediately reversed.
    The Question:
    How can I get audio to play over HDMI on my PC (It's not a problem with the TV, my other HP machines play audio over HDMI to it just fine.)?

    Running the Windows 7 Audio Playback troubleshooters from within a clean boot state

    I have a Compac pressario with windows 7 starter, a week ago an update didn-t  allow me to use the virtual keyboard, I run a restore to a previous point and it ended up  with no sound also I UNISTALL - REINSTALL AUDIO DRIVER, EVERY TEST SAYS THERE IS NO ISSUE, HOWEVER WHEN I TEST THE SPEAKERS NOTHING IS HEARD and says fail to play test tone.     Ever since I installed the new drivers I get this error " Failed to play test tone"? Has anybody experienced this problem. Please help me get my older drivers installed. Everytime I try to uninstall the beta drivers and restart, DEVMgr instantly reinstalls the drivers. THANKS

    I don't know how to solve the test tone error, but to prevent device manager from installing the same drivers again, do this:
    After uninstalling all Creative products via the Control Panel -
    go into Device Manager
    Find your Sound Blaster entry - right click -> uninstall -> check box to delete driver software -> OK -> restart computer.
    Those drivers should now be gone from your computer; your OS my install default generic audio drivers, but the Creative ones should be gone.

    Form the description of your issue (and from a short investigation) I can deduce that your assets do not have synchronized keyframes. Please try to re-encode them and force a fixed keyframe interval.
    Since the switch can be done on keyframe only, and if you do not have a keyframe in the second stream at that position, the playback will stop with an error.

  • Instant messaging not showing on main display of phone or playing alert tone.

         I am running CUCM 8.5.1 with CUPS 8.5.4.  I have configured three 7965 phones for testing. I have installed the messaging service and can send IMs from phone to phone, phone to one of the clients or client to phones. I have set them all to play a tone upon receipt. One phone will play the tone and display the message on the main display. The other two pones only display the message within the phone messenger service under the messages selection with no tone. I have tried to do my do diligence in checking my settings and they appear all be the same configs between all the phones but yet i can not get the other phones to display the message on the main screen.
    Any suggestions as to what might be causing this or how to resolve would be appreciated. Can provide additional info on request to further clarify.

    I am trying to play a tone(either a 4kHz or 7kHz) in a FPGA vi in Labview 2010.  Below is the logic that I am currently using, however, I hear no tone when running the vi.  Does anyone know why this is not working or have any other ideas to use different logic?

    First of all, what kind of a speaker do you have connected to your analog output. This could be a problem with the speaker. Also, your logic looks correct, but why are you multiplying the sine wave by .3? Are you using the full-scale amplitude for the sine wave amplitude? Your sine wave amplitude may be too small, which could cause you not to hear the sound. A screenshot of the sine wave setup window would be helpful. Also, it may be more convenient to use frequency values of 0.000175 (7 kHz) and 0.0001 (4Hz).

I have downloaded and properly installed adobe flash player multiple times and it still isnt working. Does anyone else have this problem? And, is there anything I can do about this? Oh, and Ive tried updating both browsers. it has temporarily fixed the problem beofre but then eventually it comes back and I cant use youtube.

    Yes. the code works and the data set gets return when I execute the code. It only fail with stress test after say 150-160 hits.

    Yes. Usually the printer uses a combination of black and colour blocks to perform an aligment.  The specific patterns differ from printer to printer but the pattern is either read by an internal sensor or you have to take the page and put it on the scanner to scan the alignment page in some all-in-one printers.

    Firstly, check that you BIOS is set to boot from the correct devices (normally FDD - HDD - CD-ROM - LAN). The error that you are getting indicates that the BIOS has tried to boot from the LAN which would normally mean that the HDD has no useable operating system installed or that the MBR is corrupt.
    If you can boot from the Windows XP installation CD but cannot then install the system to your hard drive, then it is likely that your hard drive itself is faulty and will need to be replaced. Try to boot from the windows CD and start the recovery console so that you can check the hard drive for errors.

    You can't share/play a music CD using Remote Disk. It's a limitation that Apple built in.
    "MacBook Air and Mac mini do not support playing DVD movies or audio CD media with Remote Disc."
    Remote Disk is limited to data transfers.
    You will have to use the MBA external superdrive, or another compatible external DVD device hooked directly to the Macbook Air.
    Otherwise, you will need to rip the CD's contents using your PC and transfer the music as data files.

  • Video keeps failing the harding test - working with stock. Can you help??!

    I have made a music promo, unfortuantely i have had it back from MTV twice now as it keeps failing the harding test (to test to see if it triggers epilietic siezures).
    I am working with stock from the prelinger archives, which - to be honest - has been a nightmare to work with for various reasons.
    The wierd thing is, the test has failed twice, both on different areas. I edited the video after it failed the first time, then it failed on a totally un-related area on the second test, which the first test didn't pick up.
    I am getting "luminance flashes" between 0.5 and 2.2. Is there a way I can filter these out in the edit rather than get the video sent back again? The "luminance flshes" can not even be made out to the naked eye. I have changed the problem areas, then it picks up something else once I send it to MTV again.
    Clearly something is happening when I export the video and get it transferred to Digibeta (same file, same edit - just changed slightly), OR - something is happening in Final Cut pro when I export to DV tape which is making this happen.
    £60 a time for a digibeta transfer is becomming quite expensive. Especially if I get it sent back again!

    The "luminance flshes" can not even be made out to the naked eye. I have changed the problem areas, then it picks up something else once I send it to MTV again.
    A flash that cannot be seen by YOUR eye takes place at the field level and you are probably watching your video on a progressive monitor that cannot display fields.
    A test that indicates you fialed should provide a precise timecode reference for each episode. If not, or if the failures move, their test is suspect.
    Is there a way I can filter these out in the edit rather than get the video sent back again?
    Without seeing your video, field by field, there's no way to really know where to send you for help. You do not seem to have the technical ability or facility to perform the quality assurance required by MTV. Their engineers should be able to offer some technical assistance or refer you to a good post production house that can cure your problems once and for all. However, it is a simple matter to apply color and luma correction at your current dub house when they do your transfer. They should be doing that for you anyway.
