Failed to start iChat because did not respond"

Seems to be a lot of this sort of trouble going on! I bought three iSight cameras for Christmas. We can IM using iChat and AIM, but none of us are able to connect with video or audio.
Thought about setting up everyone with a .Mac account, but that costs even more money and apparently doesn't solve the problem.
The specs:
One PowerBook G4, one iBook G3, one iMac G4
Two machines are using OS 10.4.3 and the other is running 10.3.9
We have tried turning off the OS X firewall on all machines
We have enabled specific ports in Sharing
As for the connectivity: We're connecting to the Web using a white Airport unit with the latest software and firmware installed on two machines connected to BellSouth DSL using an Alcatel modem...and we're direct to Alltel Telephone using a Siemen's DSL modem on the other machine; Alltel says it doesn't block any ports
Two machines are running iChat v3, the other is running iChat v2
All connections fail with the "...did not respond" message, although, of course, we did respond
The three icons at the bottom of the video window remain greyed out
We are all able to recieve video from the Apple AIM test address
Does it sound like a port problem with ISPs?
Is it a glitch in iChat AV software?
Am I missing something here? We spent $450 on cameras and another $60 to buy the stupid adaptors so the cameras could be mounted on a iMacs. I hate to think I just threw away that much money.
PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

One way or another, the problems should be solvable, so do not despair.
Try connecting to me at [email protected] or to another tester for starters.

  • Ichat failed to start video because..... not responded

    Hi
I managed to fix this problem the last time simply by trashing com.apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.ichat.AIM.plis, you can see that discussion under this thread: "geetting error -8"
For the last year, I have switched to skype but now i have some new ichat buddies who don't want to use skype. Unfortunately it doesn't work again.
I get the "ichat failed to start video because..... not responded" problem again
I use SpeedTouch 585i v6... and i have read all the old posts about unbinding SIP etc. but I don't really have access to my router since it has been provided by the ISP, and I don't now the passward and user name to the router.
Anyhow has apple gotten any smarter about solutions to this problem?
    Thanks for your time,
    Kevin

    Hi Crowncrow,
Same instructions but change unbind to bind
As the page says it can be difficult to completely unbind the version 5 and upwards devices.
In theory the IP phone can be off one ethernet port and the computer another on the Alcatel.
The binding presumes only one device is going to be doing SIP/VoIP so the binding says it will keep SIP to port 5060
In practice these devices and some adapters strip out all the SIP data even if it is not addressed to the Phone.
As the device can be re-set I would try unbinding it and see if it helps.
Unfortunately there has not been much success with version 5 or 6 firmware anyway and it may not help.

  • IChat Video connection fails because I did not respond?

    Hello everyone,
Before I get 10 post telling me this is already out there I wanted to add something new.
I've read all the NAT issues, opening ports up, UDP on or off,DMZ and router ports and tried everything suggested and I still cannot connect without this annoying error.
Here it the strange part....I can video chat with a PC person with an AIM account fine, no problems, no error messages. It's only when I try a mac user to mac user that I get this message. It worked perfect until Saturday afternoon and has not worked since with mac users. I can text chat, audio chat but video will not work. I've spoken with other mac friends who are experincing the same thing.
We are all on different ISP for the record.
Is Apple having server problems? Is this 10.4.6?
Thank you in advance for helpful suggestions.
    G5/Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

To all who are having the "I did not respond" error and have a Linksys or other router (tested on Linksys only):
In the router control panel administration tab, enable the UPnP: to ENABLE and save the settings. This solved the problem for me and now iChat works perfectly again for me and mmy dad overseas (tested on linksys only) and may for you as well. Make sure the other party on the other end has done the same. Hope this helps and please email me if this works for you too.
    Take care! [email protected]

  • Failed because recipiant did not respond

I can request a vid chat with my wife at home using the mac mini and tiger she can accept or the other way around but it always ends up with 'failed to start video chat because ..... did not respond.
I have read a lot of the discussions below repaierd permissions etc but cannot solve this prob. I am off to foreign parts later and really need to get it up and running to speak with kids over the net.
    Please help

    Hi Alex,
The ports are as you list them. 5090 is not one of them although you can use this (or virtually any port) to log into the AIM server.
On the 205 the IP address needs to be the one your Mac has.
(System Preferences > Network >Built in Ethernet >TCP/IP tab
Second row is your current IP address.
If you have only one computer it is very likely that this number will always be the same even if the 205 is acting as a DHCP server.
If you have multiple computers the Ip may change if the 205 is doing DHCP depending which order you start the computers up.
This means a Static IP would be useful.
The 205 can have more ports that most routers Forwarded but I don't know if it will allow the same ports to be forwarded to differenet computers.
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/BT/Voyager205/iChat.htm
PortForward.com's page on the Port Forwarding of the 205.
This list only the log in port and needs 22 other ports to be also added
5060, 5678, and the group of 20 added one at a time 16384-16403 all on UDP
You should be doing this via a web browser over ethernet not USB

  • Cannnot start any chats besides text because I "did not respond"

Everytime I try and start an audio or video chat with someone I get the message "__ did not respond." This happens even when the other person also has a Mac. Can anyone help me with this problem?

This error refers to several problesm that can effect the Connection.
    1) The ports are just not open somewhere in the connection.
This can be the Mac firewall if On, The modem, the router or the ISP blocking VoIP chats.
    2) The interaction between any two devices (Modem and router) at one end.
iChat does not like going through two devices doing DHCP.
It also does not like going through two lots of NAT at one end either.
    3) Referring back to item 1) Some ISP offer VoIP services (Phones over internet). This is normally because they are also telecoms companies and want to make money from long distance and international calls. They block the use of port 5060 (which is where the SIP protocol is used) to not allow anything but there own solution (normally something other than Vonage) which alos blocks iChat.
    4) Related to that is the fact that some modems are SIP aware and have SIP "bound" to port 5060. This sounds like it is how it should be but it in effect syphons off all SIP data even if there is no phone.
    5) MIMO and Pre-N modems. Currently we have 802.11b and g The next incarnation will be 802.11N. Pre-N and MIMO devices are the way some manfuctures are trying to get ahead of the game. They are not standardised and occassionaly have problems.
    6) Somewhat linked to that is sometimes you get a device at each end that does NAT in a way that the other device does not like. NAT can be done about 6 ways by the different manufacturers.
see Here for some stuff on this http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy
    Options:
Make sure you only do DHCP once at your end if using two connection devices.
Use UPnP (A non NAT way of opening the ports) where you can.
Check with your ISP about VOIP Sservices.
    7) Having a VoIP adapter.
This needs to be placed at the same level as the computer and not in line.
Scroll down this page to the longer second section for more about the Log errors and what they can tell you,

  • Ichat video conference worked for two days -- now "did not respond" error

    Greetings,
I am very frustrated by the problems I'm having with iChat. I am in Alabama for a month, and was hoping to be able to video conference with my wife and 2 1/2 year old son in San Diego. On the way to Alabama we succesfully chatted twice, once over the free wireless internet at the Laquinta I stayed at, and again at the Comfort inn I was at the next night. So I get to Alabama, and now, I can still initiate and participate in video conferences with random folks (like the very helpful Ralph in the UK) and the "test" buddies, but when I try to conference with my wife and son, I get the "did not respond" error. There doesn't seem to be any logical explanation. I've tried this at the hotel I'm at, and at a local Panera Bread (free WiFi), Both locations allow me to do video conference with everyone I try except my wife and son. She hasn't changed any settings on the computer since we succesfully chatted, and she can succesfully connect with the "test" buddies. I have been an Apple user, fan and supporter since 1984, but this really makes me upset. Is there some way to figure out what the problem is? both of us can chat with anyone we try, except for the only people we really even want to chat with...eachother!
My machine - Macbook - using DSL over my airport express
her machine - iMac G3 600Mhz, 10.3.9, using Cable modem (Earthlink)
Like I said, it worked twice with absolutley no problems, and it still works, just not with eachother!
Any help would be great appreciated. If anyone wants to call me up on i chat, you can reach me at AIM ndrkk1
Thanks and I look forward to any ideas,
And finally, Apple, if you are reading this, please come up with a way to fix this problem, or at least develop the software so it can tell us what our error is, instead of just saying "failed to initiate conference because so and so did not respond....
    -André

    Hi ndrkk,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
I take it you mean you are wireless to the modem and do not have a Airport Express device with you ?
If you do then Jan's advice is sound.
IS your wife on Quicktime 6 or 7 ?
Has she set the Connection Speed (6) or Streaming speed (7) ?
System Preferences > Quicktime > Connection Speed tab (6) or Streaming Speed tab (7) and set the drop down to match her download speed or to a max of 1.5meg (T1/LAN etc.)

  • IVPN starts, but "the pptp-vpn server did not respond. Try reconnecting."

Hi. I am new to VPN, and I just got the software iVPN from Macserve, and the server starts successfully, using either PPTP or L2TP:
But the connections from my network do not connect. Every time I click on "connect" for either network connection, I get the error "the pptp-vpn server did not respond. Try reconnecting."
I set up both connections in my Network Preferences according to the support page (http://macserve.org.uk/support/ivpn/):
My Airport Express configurations have never given me any problems with my home network:
And I think that I forwarded the ports properly (even though my firewall is not activated):
    What am I doing wrong?

The Apple routers can be a problem on vpn passthrough.
Ports that are required for vpn are more complicated ..
See earlier post.. eg How do I set up L2TP VPN?
Ports for PPTP which you have opened manually.. are not valid for L2TP.. so you need several more ports opened.
The problematic ones are GRE and ESP which are protocols not ports.
I think you can pretty well assume the apple router running anything that has BTMM in it won't work.. since it will need the port 500 for itself.
On the old express try going back to 7.6.1 firmware.. I have to say I don't use the express.. lots of extreme and TC.. so their firmware issues are slightly different so firmware versions for the express are somewhat different.
Try not to use both port forwards (mapping if you must).. and DMZ.. they can fight each other.. if DMZ doesn't work it is better to turn it right off and forward all the required ports.
    Let me recommend a test.
Plug your cable modem directly into the computer running the VPN.. so you have no NAT router in front of it.
Pay attention to the local firewall that apple runs and what ports you will need to open on it to get vpn to work.. this is your best chance to get remote vpn running. If you fail with the public IP on the computer it will certainly fail through NAT.. and generally local firewall will be an issue.
You should of course test that a client in the local lan can connect by the vpn.. it is always worth testing from the easiest configuration to the most complex.
So local lan just as you have now..
Then direct cable connection to the computer.
Then NAT router.. but you can pretty well assume apple routers are going to be problematic because apple want to dally at BTMM using same ports as IPSEC uses for L2TP.
My email is live.. roll your mouse over it and talk to me direct..

    What do I do???

    Hi
    Chat ended with error -8
    Video Conference Error Report:
    Video Conference Support Report:
    Video Conference User Report:
    Binary Images Description for "iChat":
    System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming>Streaming speed 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN
    iChat>Preferences>Video>Bandwidth limit: None
    Have you done those 2?
What type of modem/router are you using?
    Does your ISP do VoIP?
The above message suggests that ports are being blocked, see these 2 pages for info:
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page3.html#_ports
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html
When your modem dials out it starts, I think, on port 5678, it then switches to 5060. This is the port that's likely to be blocked (some VoIP companies block this port if they charge for the service).

  • Friend responds to ichat and msg saying user did not respond

Problem: When I start an ichat with a friend, she accepts and soon after, ichat says the user did not respond, even though she did. We are both out of North America at the moment - could this be the problem?

    Hi OllyOop,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Can you give some more details on how you are set in your Modem and such please.
Error 8 refers to port or NAT problems rather than where you are.

Return it. If you can't return it, turn it over to the police and consider this a life lesson.

  • 'User did not respond' - Has something changed with ichat?

This seems to be an issue for nearly everyone. I have been using ichat video succesfully for over a year now. For some reason, in the last month or so, the video has stopped working on all three of my macs (powerbook G4 Tit, new mbpro, and imac g5 at home)
From my tibook (10.3.9)...I can sucessfully connect to the apple test video without problem. The person I am trying to videochat with can also connect to the same apple test video with no problem. However, we cannot chat with video OR audio with each other.
I have done a bandwidth test, and I am on a 1.5 T1. I am behind a company NAT (cisco 1700 router, Novell server handling the nat/pat) He is in LA and has succesfully be chatting with people on the east coast, so I don't think he is the issue.

As it has been for nearly everyone else on the list, I am extremely frustrated. I have never had an issue using ichat, but now I can't get it to work from anywhere. I have been able to get everyone in my family to switch to imacs so they can chat with my kids....and now we can't get it to work at all.
What am I missing? I find it hard to believe that this is so hard to use that so many people are not able to use it.
Any help or new suggestions would be most appreciated.
    sqe

I'm new to Macs and bought a MacBook Pro for myself and partner mostly for the iChat AV feature. Neadless to say, I'm frustrated beyond belief. I've spent over 25 hours trying to get it to work to no avail.
Each of us can connect with the Apple test buddies with no problem. We can't connect with each other though, except for two times that it actually worked.
I've troubleshooted everything I can think of. I've called my ISP (Verizon), Netgear (my wireless router), and just this morning I called Apple. I was at work so, I'll have to call them back when I get home but they don't seem to even know about the problem. Which is astonishing considering how many people are reporting this on the forum.
I can connect to anyone while on my office wi-fi but only to the Apple test buddies when at home. That's why I called my ISP and Netgear. I took the router out of the picture and still had the same problem at home.
It makes no sense that the Apple test buddies do work but not real people.

  • Another ichat question:  user (me) did not respond redux

    Hi,
I have been unable to invite a video chat with someone, getting the 'I' did not respond message. I have tried everything that I can think of:
changing the port from 5190 to 443 (or whichever is recommended)
    turned off my firewall
    do not use a router
adjusted QT settings to 1.5 mbps and bandwidth limit to NONE
The person I am trying to connect with (on a PC using AIM) ends up having to invite me, which may or may not work on the 1st try. Also, when I do the invite, it immediately responds and goes to 'starting chat' and just hangs there for a while until I get the inevitable 'user (me) did not respond' with the option of reporting to apple, which I do everytime.
I know that I had this problem before and did everything that was needed/recommended, which ended up working in the end, but I am baffled now. Any other ideas? They will be greatly appreciated!!!
    Have a good day!
    Greg
imac 2.0 intel duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Dave,
I have a Scientific Atlanta DP2100 series as given through Comcast (my ISP). According to Comcast, once I hook everything up, it is set. I have recently reset it by simply unplugging everything, letting it sit for at least a minute, and then hooking it back up, power, ethernet and cable. It does it's little startup thing, and it theoretically should be good to go. I have talked to Comcast recently, due to internet lags and tv problems, and they have said that though there have been outages around my area (but not directly here), things look good on their end. A few grains of salt with that one!
For some reason, when I try to access the modems settings via the dns address, it doesn't open that address, so that may be playing a part in it. I am not too knowledgeable on that, so if you have some ideas, that would be great.
    Thanks,
    Greg

  • Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control ...

    Dear SapService,
I've installed a BI7.0 (ABAP only) instance on cluster with :
    windows 2003 x64 SP2
    SQL server 2005 x64 SP2
    WAS 7.00 kernel 80
*the service runs with domain user.
I've upgraded to kernel 114 (latest). After the upgrade the ASCS service doesn't start. It throws error:
"Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control
    request in a timely fashion"
To solve this problem I've tried:
-go back to kernel 80 but I still get the same error.
-start the service manually on the second node. Still same error.
-restart the two servers and try again to start the service on the
    nodes.
    Any ideas ?
    Please advice,

And last thing is that DPM is crushing on recovery tab

    Hi
Do you still need assistance with this?

  • IChat Mac-to-Mac xyz did not respond

Hello, I have a very strange case: when trying to connect to X we do not get iChat working, this is what happens:
    - Select the person from the buddy list
    - Connecting
    - did not respond message
I have tested this also with another Mac user Y and iChat works fine. When Y connects to X it works fine too. However when Y connects to me and tries to add X then we cannot get him in the same chat "did not respond".
How is this possible and what can we do to solve it?
    Bdw: skype is working fine!
    Many thanks!
