Failing to access iPhoto library

My Macbook is running OSX 10.9.5, my iPhoto 09 version 8.0. I am failing to access an older iPhoto library from another computer that was saved on my hard drive.  What can I do?

You might try rebuilding the older library with iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

    Hi...
Open Mac Mail. From the menu bar top of your screen click Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Select which email address you want to use to share photos on Facebook or email from the pop up menu next to:  Default email reader:
Launch iPhoto. Select the photo then from the iPhoto menu bar click Share > Email or Share > Facebook.

Simply export some photos from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and experiment.
Without telling us even what this program is, not to mind what it does, that's the best anyone can suggest.

  • Unable to access iPhoto Library with iPhoto 6

I purchased and installed iLife 06 as a replacement for iLife 04, and now I can't bring up any of my photos. The program tells me it's unable to upgrade my old photo library because the "user does not have access. If possible, repair permissions..." I went to my Disk Utility and ran the "repair permissions" for my entire hard drive but no change.
Is there a special technique for repairing permissions for the iPhoto Library folder alone? Also, the program tells me that the "path of the item that failed" includes "Memstick.ind." I found something called "Memstick.ind" in my Pictures folder and tried to trash it, but it's locked. How can I get rid of it?
Thanks for any suggestions. I'm hoping I won't have to reinstall iPhoto 04, even though I was happy with it.

    Hi Cap,
" Unable to upgrade this library because the current user does not have access"
-First make sure your Pictures folder has the correct permissions for you, the user. Do this by highlightling the Pictures folder, hit Command i to bring up the info pane.
Make sure you are the owner and have read and write permissions. Click the button at the bottom of the window.
-If your problem is a locked file/files follow the info in the following Apple kb

  • Accessing iphoto library on external drive via wireless

I'm running out of room on my macbook so I moved my iphoto library to an external drive (after reading other posts on how to accomplish this, copied to the external drive and connected without a problem). However, i'm accessing the external drive wirelessly from my airport extreme and now iphoto is painfully slow - it takes several seconds for each photo to resolve properly. Any suggestions for the best way to manage? Do i need to keep older photos in a library on the external drive and a library for more current ones i want to access regularly on my local? I don't think i want to have multiple libraries but the performance this way is driving me crazy.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
A wired connection is the best way to have your Library on an external.

  • Time Machine and Accessing iPhoto library on an external HD

    Hi
I am new to Time Machine.  I didn't see a community for it, so I am posting here.
I have TIme Machine set to backup to an external HD (Clickfree).
When I check on the iphoto library stored on the HD for the TIme Machine, I am unable to open the library.
How do I confirm that my iphoto library is being properly backed up by time machine?
Will it not open because iphoto is not installed on the external HD with the Time Machine backup?
    Thanks
    A

Time Machine provides a "versioned backup" of your files. Yes, it does provide a backup through time of your photos. You can restore your photos through the Time Machine interface on your Mac.
Obviously, if the drive on your Mac dies, then, you won't be able to access your TM backup until you repair your Mac. Restoring from your TM backup could take hours.
It is recommended that in addition to TM you perform a bootable cloned backup of the HD in your Mac using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to an external drive. Booting up from your cloned drive gets your Mac up and running within minutes.

  • Using iPhoto on a network to access iPhoto library on the se

Is it possible to use iPhoto5 on each of the macs on my network (10 seats) to access one central iPhoto library on the server? Specifically, I am a high school yearbook teacher and I have used iPhoto in the past, and the new version seem great for nearly eveything I want to do, especially searching, BUT I need to keep all the images on one central server, or the whole thing quickly devolves into chaos. I am told it caint be done.
If not, what other image-browsing & organizing programs do folks recommend for this type of application? Of course I have no money for software the costs thousands or even many hundreds of dollars.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The option to share your library is built in to iPhoto. See Preferences, tab Sharing. If this will suit your needs I don't know, but it's worth looking into. This assumes the other mac have iPhoto installed. I tried it with iPhoto 5 as a server and iPhoto 2 as client, but that didn't work

  • Updated my OS to Yosemite ver 10.10.3 Need to access iPhoto library in Photos. I have over 400 Mega pictures on a partitioned external drive. Tried dragging but no change.

I updated my OS to 10.10.3. but now can't access my iPhoto library in Photo.
I have an iMac (20 inch, Mid 2007) with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDRs SDRAM and have over 400 mega bits of pictures on a partitioned external drive: 2 TB G-Technology by Hitachi connected by FireWire 800 to my iMac. My iPhoto application no longer reveals what version of iPhoto I have, but it was last updated on Dec 14, 2013 with a 1.7 GB file.
Tried dragging from its place on external hard drive.
When I go into the iPhoto it says it is not compatible with OS X Yosemite but the link offered to App Store says they do not have an update.
    Help?

Apple dropped both iPhoto and Aperture with the Yosemite release, and I am not happy about that as I used Aperture, but try holding down the option key when you click on the Photos icon. That should bring up a box asking what library you want to connect to. In my case it had both Aperture and Photos. But there is also a choice called "other" that I would think would allow you to navigate to where your library is located and select it.

  • Access iPhoto library in time capsule

    Hello,
I have my iPhoto library in time capsule. Everything is ok with my mac, view, edit, stream, etc.
But some times I dont bring my Mac home, and I would like access my library from my iPad and if possible stream to apple tv, like i do it from Mac.
Since its not possible to access my library with iPhoto for iOS, is there any app that does it?
    Thanks,
    ruirego

No.  The two iPhoto apps have only their name in common.  There's no interaction between the two possible. You can send a feature requres to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/.

  • Can't access iPhoto library, iPhoto apparently automatically upgraded to v 9.3

I suddenly cannot access the several thousand photos in my iPhoto Library. I believe my computer must have automatically downloaded and upgraded the version I previously had. Now I get an error message that reads: The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
I still need my images able to be read by previous versions since I go back and forth editing between older desktops. Is there a way to access the photo library without okaying the upgrade? If I reinstall an older version of iPhoto, will I lose the existing library of photos?

Go to Photos > iPhoto Library and Control Click on it. Go to Show Package Contents and back up your Originals folder and whatever else you want to a backup drive. Then go ahead and update iPhoto and if you do happen to lose any photos then you know you have the ability to import them again.

  • How do I access iPhoto Library Outside of iPhoto?

I am attempting to upload some pictures to Kodak Gallery....and I can't find any files with my photos in them. I find an icon that says "iPhoto Library" but you can no longer access.
Can someone tell me how I get a look at my photos via file folder and where they are hidden??
    Thanks!!

    VERY common question
The photos are now in a Package rather than a folder
You can see the package by going ot your pictures folder and right clicking on the iPhoto library ad selecting "show package contents"
The safest way to access you photos is to export them to a desktop folder and access them there.
while it is best to stay out of the package since it's purpose is to keep users from damaging their iPhoto data base - see TD's discussion here -- http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1126400&tstar -- for more information

  • Disk space error when trying to access iPhoto library on external drive

My iPhoto photos are stored on an external drive, which I've be accessing regularly on my old Macbook.  I upgraded to a newer (but used) Macbook that has Yosemite installed and, therefore, Photos.  When I try to access my iPhoto library on the external drive, I get an error that there is not enough disk space.  There is a lot of disk space on the new Mac.  The eternal drive is getting full, but I deleted a lot of large files and there should be enough space on there now.
    Any ideas?
    I'm stumped!

What format is that external drive?

  • How do i access iphoto library from other apps?

I'm trying to upload a photo from iphoto to my blog through safari, but finder won't allow me to access the iphoto library. In the past the only way I've been able to do this is by dragging the photo from iphoto onto the desktop, then using the jpg from there. I have duplicate photos, which can't be right...
When I'm networked with my pc, I can click on iphoto library and up comes the years and folders inside.
Please don't tell me my pc is better than my mac...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Read Terence Devlins's treatise on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It will tell you exactly what you need.
As far as dragging to the desktop to use that is one way and then delete the file after you've uploaded it to its destination.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Accessing iPhoto Library From Time Machine

I recently began backing up mine and my wife's MacBooks using Time Machine. Previously, I would drag the folders to my Lacie drive to back them up. Generally, only iTunes, Documents, and iPhoto had anything new in them after the first time.
My issue is that I can't find a way to access the Time Machine backup files from another Mac. What if one of the Macs is stolen, as happened to us before? How can I access the images from the lost/stolen Mac that are backed up in Time Machine? Time Machine protects everything and in the case of iPhoto it's not possible to access the iPhoto Library using folders any longer, as it was in earlier versions of OSX. The images/folders are all somehow imbedded within the iPhoto Libary itself.
    Thanks --

You do not "access" your TM backup - you open it using TM and restore the file(s) you want from teh time your want
specific TM questions are best ask in the TM forum
