Failing to rip cd's

It starts to rip the cd as normal but then it slows down and eventually stops. I take good care of my cd's but have had some of them for years.. Despite this, the cd's play fine on my cd player, and ripped easily enough on my previous laptop (I'm kicking myself that I didn't use icloud) I have over 300 albums, I've tried to rip about 280 so far, out of them over 20 have done this. Please help me..

When you insert an audio CD it should mount on the Desktop. (If it doesn't, the drive isn't working properly, unless it required a driver - if it does installing the driver is all you need to do.) You can just drag the 'Track1', 'Track 2' files into iTunes. No additional software is needed. If you have iTunes' prefs set to import a CD automatically it ought to do this.
I can't answer for video games. They ought to recognize the disk wherever it originates from, but some of them may be touchy. You can only try.

  • Some PDF's fail at RIP

Posted in the Acrobat Forum, but the traffic is much better here -
For a while I would blame Quark generated files, but this seems to be InDesign and Distiller created
The objectonal result is always defined as a triangular area, clipped to exlude some triangular image data.
In this case, we set a 12 page InDesign CS2 file and created spreads which never made it thru the imagesetter (it churned away at the data for 4 hours). Knowing there was a problem, we exported the spreads to pdf which were placed into a new ID file, this usually will catch any fonts not embedded and correct such and sent to the imagesetter - Graphics > Images > Send Data > All.
I cannot find anything within the spreads pdf which might cause the plate to incorrectly image. The original ad "plusnewsviews.pdf", upon digging into it, does raise some eyebrows - the creator set two halfpage ads in one InDesign lettersize page, apparently wrote to Postscript with file-info toggled and cropped the pages; hrmm, and somehow has a font not embedded.
We see this failed type of image once or twice a month and I really would like to find a fix; rasterizing whole pages through PS at 1200 dpi gets pretty unwieldy.
See attached scan of our plate, supplied ad, and file we sent to our RIP.
    Catch any errors or cause?

I'm sure the Accuset is Postscript Level 2

  • Mac Mini struggling to copy/rip some older audio CDs

    Hello,
I have a 2012 Mac Mini, 2.6Ghz Quad-Core i7, 1TB Fusion Drive and 16GB of Crucial memory. Some months back I made a decision to re-rip my CD library as Apple Lossless, for streaming to the Apple TV connected to my receiver. I started with my newest CDs and worked backwards, but when I got down to the oldest of my CDs there were some (but not all) that the Mini struggled to rip cleanly or at all. With those troublesome discs, the results varied. Some discs would simply flat-out fail to rip or even copy to the desktop directly from the disc. Others would struggle to rip or copy but appear to succeed, only for the tracks to be riddled with millisecond audio drop-outs (this is actually more of a hassle, as it requires manually proofing every track for flaws). What's really bizarre is that even a directly copied file from disc to desktop would suffer the same audio drop-outs, even though it's a digital file going through no conversion and should be identical in every way.
So the logical conclusion would be that these discs have just gone bad due to age; but there-in lies the catch. Not only do the discs play without issue in other CD players, but I was able to successfully copy the same CDs on three other Macs (even using the same external optical drive in one case) successfully. The disc I ripped yesterday on my Mac Mini whose tracks were full of audio drop-outs now sounds flawless when ripped on my Mac Pro at work.
Obviously I have a workaround for getting these discs loaded - rip them on another computer - but now my bigger concern is what on earth if wrong with my Mac Mini? Is it a hardware issue? Something with the USB ports? Or the Fusion drive? The Operating System? Does anyone have any suggestions to try prior to me making a second backup of all my data and dragging it to the Genius Bar? Thanks.

    I have both:
    - an internal slot-loading drive in my mini, like you, and
    - an external USB-connected 5.25" mains-powered tray-loading drive.  A "proper" drive!
I too have problems sometimes reading/writing with the internal.  I've always assumed they have to make LOTS of compromises and shortcuts with the design and specification of the slim, low-powered internal drives, which are really intended for laptop/battery use- and always failing, as reading threads here will show.
I suggest you beg/borrow/buy a "real" external like mine for your old-CD rips. They're not expensive, and you can always sell it on when you've ripped your CD collection.

Alternatively, these days, you might have to buy an enclosure and drive separately and combine them, or get a used one off eBay.

Thanks George_K I have foomatic installed but it gives me the error "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". foomatic-rip is in /usr/lib/cups/filter with a symbolic link to /usr/bin. So as it is a perl shell script is it failing because it is owned by root? I am just about @ my wits end with this printer!!!
Also now when I try to print a test page it says "Quota limit reached". This is ridiculous, know one should ever have this much trouble installing a printer on ANY os!
I have been through the CUPS wiki front and back and I just can't figure it out. Any help would be great before I do something stupid... like hook it up to a WINDBLOZE box!

  • Error Checking in iTunes - do I set it to ON of OFF and WHY?

So I have a disk that looks good but iTunes fails to RIP a couple of tracks in their entirety (i.e. - it only copies a portion of the track ) and this is when the _Error Checking_ option is "checked".
If I de-select the Error Checking option and retry the import, the track is imported completely
    So my questions are:
    1. if Error Checking is selected and the RIP is unsuccessful is this reported anywhere?
    - it would be nice after ripping 18 tracks to be informed that 1 or 2 were not completed
    - I could not find any errors reported - it simply skipped to the next track
    - I only found it on listening to the track, which terminated abruptly
    - I re-ripped the faulty tracks and noticed the Rip terminated prematurely from the status bar
    2. if Error Checking is de-selected
    - I assume the Ripping process simply copies what data it is able to read?
    - if that is the case - I assume burning a CD will propagate the problem?
Is anyone able to provide some clear and concise information on the Ripping process WRT Error Checking - no conjecture or assumptions please, the web is full of that.
    Many Thanks in advance

Thanks Limnos for confirming the propagation issue - I didn't know if apple did stuff behind the scenes.
If anyone else knows if iTunes has errors flagged or reports located somewhere I would love to know where.
For know I'll accept that turning on error checking will cause the Rip to fail and not use it.
One other thing I noticed was with Error Checking turned on the quality of some tracks were pretty poor, but once turned off the quality got better - this appears contrary to some other posts I have read.
Any feedback on the quality issue would be appreciated

  • ZBF woes

Hi I’m having some difficulty in understanding the behaviour of zone based firewalls on a 887va router, I do not understand the implications of including the self zone in a zone-pair. It seems that if you include the self zone in a pair with any other zone, the self zone becomes restrictive between all zones whether paired or not. For example if I include the self zone in a pair with the OUTSIDE zone, pinging the router from a host from the INSIDE zone no longer works…..
Secondly we operate a DMVPN  (this is a spoke router) and the tunnel will successfully establish with the following traffic configured to PASS
    Tcp 4500
    Tcp 500
    ESP
    GRE
However traffic through the tunnel will fail (including rip).
If however I modify the firewall policy to permit all traffic to and from the Self and OUTSIDE zones, tunnel traffic seems to work successfully between the SELF and VPN zones and the VPN and internal zones.
However given that all traffic destined for the tunnel would be encapsulated in a GRE header and GRE is permitted between the SELF and OUTSIDE Zones, I cannot see what other ports would need opening?
I’ve included some config below, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
Sounds like you are having some problems :)
It would be easier to see what has been done if you posted your running-config, instead of show commands, they are harder to follow than the running-config.
And its UDP port 500 and 4500 you want to open, not TCP.

  • Bad Superdrive?

I recently got a core duo mac mini. Everything seemed to be working fine, but now I'm starting to think there may be problems with the superdrive. I've had several dvd fail to rip w/ Mac the Ripper on the Mini - no problems at all when using the same version of Mac the Ripper to rip the very same movie on my Powerbook. The superdrive on the Mini refuses the blank dvd-r media I purchase - the Powerbook mounts the dvd-r media w/o a problem.
    Any ideas?

When it comes to reading DVDs make sure they are clean and as scratch free as possible. Dirt and scratches do affect a drives ability to read any disc.
As for writing discs, try a different brand before thinking there's drive issue. Yes the SuperDrive in the Mac mini is more sensitive than some other drives although if you stick to quality media then you shouldn't have issues. I recommend Verbatim and Apple branded media. If they burn ok then you can then start to experiment with other brands.

  • ITunes Match fails to match recently ripped CD. Can I avoid matching this CD?

I have a CD from a band that is not available on iTunes that I've loaded to my MacBook Pro. As expected iTunes Match can't match this album. As a result, iTunes Match fails to proceed past the third step of the matching process and continously loops. How can I stop this album from being part of the match process?

    Hi,
What format have you ripped the CD? There are problems with some ALAC and AIFF files.
If the cd is in your iTunes library, there is no way of stopping match process. Once cd has been uploaded there is a workaround to make remove the tracks from the cloud and not your library.
However, to resolve your current problem you may need to delete the tracks.

  • Chinese characters failed to display on songs in rip from my own CDs

My old hard disk was dead and I lost some of the songs that I had on my computer.  So I tried ripping my own CDs into iTune.  Unfortunately, all the Chinese characters failed to display properly.  The songs in my old ipod showed those characters nicely and properly so I do not even have guts to sync my old ipod now. Did some research on the net and it said that I can try convert ID3 tags.  Sadly, the new iTunes no longer provide this function.  Went to apple support site and they need me to buy apple care plan!  I have a ipad still in the warranty period but I am extremely disappointed that iTunes, a software, also needs me to pay for support.  This has cast me shadow of having my 4th apple product.  I am using the latest iTunes version 12.0.1.26.  Help on support of local language is truly appreciated.

You wrote "with my last ipod update". Are we talking about syncing your iTunes to the iPod function of your iPhone? Because if not you might be in the wrong forum. If so, then you need to remember that there is no "drag and drop" functionality for transferring your music onto the iPhone. You must first create a playlist within iTunes (I called mine simply iPhone) and then tell the iPhone to sync that playlist to your phone when you connect it to your computer. As you are probably familiar with creating playlists within iTunes you know that you can then drag and drop whatever you'd like into one, including both purchased and imported music.
    Hope that helps.

  • PDF's, RIP and Failed Images

We occasionally receive pdf's, always created though Quark (it seems) where parts of an image clip in a triangular pattern. We have not been able to find a cause or cure for this, and once it creeps in, the only solution I've found is to rasterize the entire pdf in Photoshop, obviously creating a sometimes unwieldy file at 1200dpi.
Can anybody come up with a preflight check or fix within Acrobat Professional that might see what has happened to this image?
We typically (always) place pdf's into InDesign and print plates to an Accuset 1000 Plus Imagesetter which has an internal hardware rip, cannot proof in any fashion the actual postscript file.
As a check I frequently write and distill a ps file, but that never shows the error/clipping which occurs in the imagesetter. Refrying the pdf has never seemed to help, btw.
Original pdf file hosted at Acrobat.com
    https://acrobat.com/#d=yzqIZgercHKGFvG9VX7fOQ

The PDF you've shared was created by Distiller 8, not the Quark export engine. It's structurally correct, passes the PDF/X compliance test and I cannot get the triangular masking effect to show up when printing it (either direct from the PDF, or after placing the PDF into an INDD layout and exporting that to PDF)
Of the two images in your screenshot with black borders, there are no internal differences between them - both are unfilled vector paths with a K-plate JPEG image behind (the document is device gray throughout). If you run any Preflight profile in "Analyze" mode you can drill into the document tree to see what's making up each section, and in the Output Preview dialog you can enable Object Inspector mode, click someplace in the page and see the object stack under the cursor.
Can you help us out with some more details - is the effect specific to your RIP (i.e. can you see it on screen and/or in the print preview thumbnail, and does it appear when printing to another device), and does it matter if the image has a border, mask, etc.? Which version of Acrobat/InDesign are you using, and is this only an issue when the PDF is placed into an InDesign layout?

  • ITunes (ver 11.04) rip fails with compilation CDs that has over 18 tracks.

I've starting re-ripping my CD collection to the Apple Lossless format and I've notice that everytime I tried to rip a CD (mainly compilation or box set CDs that has more than 18 tracks on a CD) tracks from 19 and 20 will take days to rip. iTunes will show the running time on the last two tracks as #19 with 1:15:38 and track #20 either 30 minutes or 15 minutes (depending on CD). I am using an external CD drive on a Intel MacMini more (ver 10.8.4) with iTunes (ver 11). I've used two external optical drives (each one a different manufacture) and I get the same results with both drives. I checked for firware updates for the LG optical and I couldn't locate it on the LG website. My HP optical drive firmware didn't need updating. Help! I'm forced to use my Linux box to to rip them and then convert them to Apple Lossless and then transfer them to my mac! Thank you all in advance for your repsonse!

Never mind, I borrowed a neigbor's USB powered "portable" external optical and it ripped two CDs that has 18+ tracks without any problems. What are the chances that I have two, heavy, stationary exernal drives that have the same issue! (Unless they're manufactured by the same company for different brands....h-m-m).

  • Some CD-Ripped Songs Fail to Play--HELP!!!

Okay, I see that some people have trouble with songs purchased via the iTMS; however, I have a different problem.
I have songs that were ripped from CDs via Apple Lossless (uncompressed) that are now unplayable via iTunes (no error) or Quicktime Player (a generic error--no number). I was using iTunes v7.0.2 when I noticed this last night and I'm now using v7.1--no change. Also, this problem is rather random--only a handful of files have been noticed (of thousands) and never two from the same album.
First, I need a way to automatically (or procedurally) verify the health and playability of each song in my library. Doing this manually would be far too time consuming and apparently this is something that would need to be run periodically to very song file health.
Also, I need to fix the problem. I would prefer to fix the problem if possible since it would be far more convenient. BTW: Retrospect and Disk First has not detected a problem with the file... it is still referenced as a playable file (no exclamation points...) within iTunes.
Help! I need an AppleScript or something that could at least locate the songs that have crapped-out. Okay?
    Thanks!
    Robert

The indicates that iTunes cannot find the file
and has nothing to do with the 'health' of the file.
Exactly! There is no exclamation point ("!") since the file is being located by iTunes; yet, the file is NOT playable by iTunes or QuickTime Player...
Is your Quicktime up to date with v7.1.5?
    Yes.
You can check Dougs Scripts to see if you can find a
    script that will help you.
Where can I find Doug's Scripts?
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • InDesign CS4 fails to initialize page on Postscript RIP

Just upgraded to CS4 Design premium and tried printing to our RIP which is running on WindowsNT. Never had any problems with CS3. Now the RIP comes up with the message 'Offending Command: initializepage'. when printing from InDesign. Have printed from Acrobat 9 without any problems.
Running iMac 3.06ghz Duo Core Intel with OSX 10.5.
    Any suggestions anybody.

InDesign can often send more complex postscript than the other apps, it is after all, dealing with a lot more types of information all at the same time. The problem comes in when ID invokes a part of the Postscript standard that hasn't been properly implemented in the RIP.
As you've seen, a workaround that commonly is successful is to export, or even print, to PDF, and sned tot he RIP from Acrobat.

  • Using iPod as backup disk for failing drive

I am an avid user of iTunes with multiple years of history behind me, and I have owned my own iPod since about February, and I have never been disappointed until now, but I feel this is more an ID 10.T error than anything else.
I have a big library, so much so that a regular iPod just wouldn't do it, I had to go for the biggest one available. With a library of 5,230 songs covering 31.65GB, I have a nearly irreplacable collection, and to my dismay, my internal disk is failing (thank you Maxtor...)
As a wise move, I synchronised my iPod with iTunes with the latest additions, and was horrified to find that iTunes had sleuthed an entire band (Motorhead! No!), three songs from another band (Jimi Hendrix, why all the good guys?!), and two lone songs had become victim to my series of bad sectors cropping up all over the place. While I was thankful that this had not altered my iPod listings (the tracks are still on the iPod, and are still playable), I am left with a situation.
If I want to recover these tracks, most of which were ripped from now long-lost CDs years ago rather than purchased over iTMS, how would I go about doing it? Obviously, restoring them on the failing disk would be absolutely fruitless, but there will come a time when I CAN afford to replace the disk, and when this time comes, the entire library will need restoring, and as an extra precaution, I want to have the library stored on my partner's PowerBook. Having turned off automatic synchronisation, under the fear that I would lose my tracks, I thought there would then also be a method for transferring all the data FROM the iPod TO a machine, but this does not appear to be possible, and one begins to ponder the usefulness and customer satisfaction of a one-way music player? Is there an option within iTunes I am missing or simply haven't found yet? Or does the problem lie deeper than I believe it to be? How am I supposed to get music off, and re-enable automatic synchronisation without vaporising my irreplacable music collection that already exists on my iPod?
Seriously, it took me many years to rip, and over five hours to transfer, do NOT tell me I'm going to have to vaporise it to do anything with it, as I've already lost a few ultra-rare tracks on the disk...
Any help that could be given is very much appreciated.
    Custom Windows XP Pro

Now that your iPod is set for manual music management, does the iPod show up in Windows like an external drive? Do you see it listed either by name or by the generic "removable disk" under My Computer? Because once Windows recognizes it as a removable drive, you can open it and poke around for your files. First you need to expose hidden files using Windows' Tools•Folder Options•View settings. Then you'll see the folders in which the iPod stores all the stuff.
