Failover Cluster on Server 2012 R2
Hi
I`m trying to deploy a Failover Cluster with two servers, both Virtual machines on Vmware, OS- server 2012 r2.
Both servers can see all disks from storage.
For some reason, I keep getting these messages(for all disks) when I run "Validate Configuration" before creating the cluster:
1. Persistent Reservation Registration key 0x1000100b2 for Test Disk X reservation holder node "Servername" was not removed by the call to REGISTER using RESERVATION KEY 0x1000100b2 and SERVICE ACTION RESERVATION KEY 0x1000100c2.
2. Test DiskX does not support SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations commands needed by clustered storage pools that use the Storage Spaces subsystem. Some storage devices require specific firmware versions or
settings to function properly with failover clusters. Contact your storage administrator or storage vendor for help with configuring the storage to function properly with failover clusters that use Storage Spaces.
all other steps come sout with no errors.
I have already deployed another cluster, the same way, and didn`t get any of those messages..
Can anyone give me a hand here?
Thank you!

Add Node to Hyper-V Cluster running Server 2012 R2
Hi All,
I am in the process to upgrade our Hyper-V Cluster to Server 2012 R2 but I am not sure about the required Validation test.
The Situation at the Moment-> 1 Node Cluster running Server 2012 R2 with 2 CSVs and Quorum. Addtional Server prepared to add to the Cluster. One CSV is empty and could be used for the Validation Test. On the Other CSV are running 10 VMs in production.
So when I start the Validation wizard I can select specific CSVs to test, which makes sense;-) But the Warning message is not clear for me "TO AVOID ROLE FAILURES, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT ALL ROLES USING CLUSTER SHARED VOLUMES BE STOPPED BEFORE THE STORAGE
IS VALIDATED". Does it mean that ALL CSVs will be testest and Switched offline during the test or just the CSV that i have selected in the Options? I have to avoid definitly that the CSV where all the VMs are running will be switched offline and also
that the configuration will be corputed after loosing the CSV where the VMs are running.
Can someone confirm that ONLY the selected CSV will be used for the Validation test ???
Many thanks
MarkusHi,
The validation will test the select the CSV storage, if you have guest vm running this CSV it must shutdown or saved before you validate the CSV.
Several tests will actually trigger failovers and move the disks and groups to different cluster nodes which will cause downtime, and these include Validating Disk Arbitration,
Disk Failover, Multiple Arbitration, SCSI-3 Persistent Reservation, and Simultaneous Failover.
So if you want to test a majority of the functionality of your cluster without impacting availability, exclude these tests.

Migrating single file server to failover cluster file server
Hi,
Currently we have one file server which is our Domain controller also. File Server data stored in SAN storage lun. Users home folders also resides at file server. Now we want to create 2 node failover cluster file server.
Questions:
1)Can we assign same storage lun to failover cluster?
2)Do we need to assign all permissions and storage quota again?
What is the best option to achieve this goal.Hi,
if you attach the same LUN to the failover cluster the NTFS permission (security tab) are retained because they are stored in the LUN itself
Share permission are lost because they are stored in the registry of the file server. If you have few share with a simple share permission structure, simply recreate them in the cluster. If you have a lot of shares and complex permission tree, you have to
export registry hives related to lanmanserver\shares -
Building a Hyper-V Cluster with Server 2012 R2
I'm building a 3 node Hyper-V cluster with Server 2012 R2. I create the cluster but the report is telling me I should configure a disk witness as a best practice. Do I need that with a 3 node cluster. In 2008 R2, 3 nodes give me node majority
and I'm good to go.
Thanks
SMaximus7True, but Windows Server 2012 introduced a dynamic quorum capability. When you have an odd number of nodes in the cluster, you really don't need to have a witness to ensure availabilty. But with the witness what happens is that if you lose a
node a witness comes in, so there are three quorum votes - one for each surviving node and the witness. Then, if another node fails, the cluster will continue to be operational because now you have the witness and the surviving node to maintain quorum.
Not absolutely needed, but a real nice to have. And, since it just takes such a small disk for a disk witness, or a file share for a file share witness, there is no really reason not to include it.

Windows 2012 Failover Cluster - File server role (vCO)
Hi,
I wonder if anybody can shed some light on a query i have.
A windows 2012 failover cluster will be built in AD domain example.uk. Cluster File server roles will be created and will reside in this domain also.
We also have a requirement to run a cluster file server role in the child domain off secure.example.uk. Is this possible? or do the file server roles and related vCO's have to reside in the same domain as the cluster (CNO).
I know the CNO can be used to create the VCO but could a prestage a VCO in the child domain of secure.example.uk.
MarkHi Mark,
By default CNO will create
VCO automatically in default domain computer OU, we generally use the
KISS principle to place the CNO and VCO to the same OU, and as far as I know there no known design document indicate the VCO can be placed in different domain, therefore I suggest you place the CNO and V CO at same OU.

Failover Cluster in SQL 2012 in not auto switch when stop service SQL
Good Morning to all,
I'm Mr.Tuyen from VietNam. I have a big problem with AlwaysOn High Availabity in SQL 2012.
I setup 3 server and join Availabilty Group. Ex: Server A (Primary), Server B (Secondary), Cluster Qourum is only node. I have test:
1. Stop service SQL server A, immediately server B is Primary
Start servicel SQL server A, Server A is secondary
2. Stop service SQL server B, server is not Primary and "status is Resloving" and role cluster failed with error as belows
Clustered role 'XXX' has exceeded its failover threshold. It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state. No additional attempts will be made to bring the role
online or fail it over to another node in the cluster. Please check the events associated with the failure. After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after
the restart delay period.
or
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role 'XXX' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role.
Do you have same error?http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2012/03/15/inf-alwayson-the-secondary-database-doesn-t-come-automatically-when-the-primary-instance-of-sql-server-goes-down.aspx

Failover cluster File Server role best practices
We recently implemented a Hyper-V Server Core 2012 R2 cluster with the sole purpose to run our server environment. I started with our file servers and decided to create multiple file servers and put them in a cluster for high
availability. So now I have a cluster of VMs, which I have now learned is called a guest cluster, and I added the File Server role to this cluster. It then struck me that I could have just as easily created the File Server role under my Hyper-V
Server cluster and removed this extra virtual layer.
I'm reaching out to this community to see if there are any best practices on using the File Server role. Are there any benefits to having a guest cluster provide file shares? Or am I making things overly complicated for no reason?
Just to be clear, I'm just trying to make a simple Windows file server with folder shares that have security enabled on them for users to access internally. I'm using Hyper-V Core server 2012 R2 on my physical servers and right now I have Windows
Server Standard 2012 R2 on the VMs in the guest cluster.
Thanks for any information you can provide.Hi,
Generally with Hyper-V VMs available, we will install all roles into virtual machines as that will be easy for management purpose.
In your situation the host system is a server core, so it seems that manage file shares with a GUI is much better.
I cannot find an article specifically regarding "best practices of setting up failover cluster". Here are 2 articles regarding build guest cluster (you have already done) and steps to create a file server cluster.

Error in creating Failover Clutser - Windows Server 2012 R2
Hello,
I have created a single node Failover Cluster in Windows Server 2012 R2. When I am trying to add second node to this cluster, it gives the error: “Cluster
service on node Node1did not reach the running state. The error code is 0x5b4. For more information check the cluster log and the system event log from node Node1. This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
The server 'Node1.mydomain.com' could not be added to the cluster.
An error occurred while adding node 'Node1.mydomain.com' to cluster 'My_Cluster'.
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.”
I have attached the screenshots of Event ID.
Firewalls are turned off on both servers (Node1 and Node2). I have successfully created single node clusters on both servers, but when I try to add second node, it
gives error.
Before starting the creation of new cluster I don't forget to Destroy previous cluster and run "Clear-ClusterNode".
Every time they successfully pass the Validate Configuration Test, but give the error on creating failover cluster.
I'm using the service account which has full permissions on CNU and both nodes, plus it has permissions to create computer accounts in AD.
Can anyone please help?
Thank you.
Best regards,
Hasan Bin HasibThank you fellows!
The issue just resolved when I moved the Node1 and Node2 on the same host, and the cluster was successfully created.
After the creation of cluster, as soon as I moved the Node2 to some other host, then the Failover Cluster Manager console started showing Node2 is Down. Error: Cluster node Node2 could not to join the cluster because it failed
to communicate over the network with any other node in the cluster. Verify the network connectivity and configuration of any network firewalls. Event ID: 1653
IP Address of Node1: 172.16.1.186 ; IP Address of Node2: 172.16.1.187
And yes, the ‘Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter Performance Filter’ is already disabled on all virtual adapters. All firewalls are disabled, no antivirus installed. I’m using same type of NICs.
I don’t know where the blockage is, and I am badly stuck. Please help.
Thank you.

The dreaded: The network address is invalid error - SQL 2014 Cluster on Server 2012 R2
Trying to setup an SQL 2014 Failover cluster on Windows Server 2012 R2 (two nodes). Every time I get to the assign a SQL server Network Name piece of the setup I get the following error message:
The given network name is unusable because there was a failure trying to determine if the network name is valid for use by the clustered SQL instance due to the following error: 'The network address is invalid.'
This happens whether I use the Advanced cluster installation procedures or the normal installation. I have tried the following based on anything I can find on the web:
1) Removed the clustered MTDTC role.
2) Deleted the NIC Team (4 1GB NICs). Deleted all but 1 NIC from the server device manager.
3) Shutdown the second node.
4) Lanman Server registry change posted someplace on this forum that does not stick on reboot
None of the above, separately or in combination, has worked to allow SQL 2014 to be installed as a cluster role.
There is no virtual machines added to the cluster. This is not a VMware installation. It is straight Windows 2012 R2 with a two node cluster (setup identically).
Any ideas, suggestions, comments?
Thanks,
-AndrewHi Alberto and Lydia,
The cluster was verified, there are only warnings related to a lack of redundant network paths as the cluster verification doesn't recognize a team of 4 nics are redundant. I updated AD to include the permissions detailed in the link Lydia provided,
still no go.
I'm not sure how to attach the installation logs to this message forum other than as text in the message, so here you go:

DFS-R folder resources Failed in Failover Cluster on Server 2008 R2
Maybe a week ago, 7 of our DFS-R Folder failover cluster resources lost their configuration data. In the resource list, they just show up as "()".
I've seen suggestions online that disabling the replicated folder will remove it from the Failover Cluster, and then re-enabling it will automatically add it back to the cluster. So, I've disabled it via the Connections tab, and that does nothing. The other
option is to disable it under the Memberships tab...but that has consequences, and I would rather not do that if it isn't necessary.
I'm also now seeing event ID 5012's popping up in the DFS Replication logs every hour or so.
The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner etc etc. The partner did not recognize the connection or the
replication group configuration.
Error: 9026 (The connection is invalid)
Now, "dfsrdiag pollad /verbose" or "dfsrdiag pollad /mem:<dc name>" both come back as successful. And a DFS Diagnostic Report brings back nothing apparently relevant to this issue, other than one error concerning the same event
ID 5012's.
Also, I've verified that it's not a DNS issue, pinging the home office DFS server from the site server resolves correctly, and vice versa. And the windows firewall is disabled on both servers. It's POSSIBLE that there is a network issue. Replication works
fine between the site server and the 2nd cluster server service, just not between the site server and the 1st cluster server service. However, via netstat I see active connections between the site server and the cluster server, as well as the active cluster
host (although, just a single connection to the clustered DFS server, but ~6 to the cluster host itself).
So, I'm completely at a loss here. Any recommendations?Hi,
This error usually occurs when one partner attempts to establish an RPC connection with another member, but is unable to.
You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:

Server 2012 R2 failover cluster
Hi Guys,
I created a 2 node cluster using server 2012 R2 ..I have VMM 2012 R2 running on both nodes with SQL 2012 SP1
VMM is configured for High availability and SQL always-on feature is also enabled.
Now when I stop cluster service on one of the node, the roles and quorum disk failover to the other node but the quorum disk does not come back online and as a result the cluster fails until I bring back the cluster service on the current owner (owner of
the quorum disk)
I'm at a loss for what to do, any help will be greatly appreciated.
RichardHi Guys,
when i run the said commands on both nodes I get the same result ..see below
Validation report shows no warning on the quorum disk
VMM and SQL are not on hyper-v hosts. I have 2 physical machines, each running VMM 2012 R2 (HA) and SQL 2012 SP1 (Always On). Do you believe hosting both on the same server could be the issue? I will look that up too.
The cluster is fine when Node2 owns the quorum disk.
Roles on Node1 successfully fail over to Node2 when I stop cluster service on Node1
When I stop Cluster service on Node2 roles on Node2 move to Node1 (including the quorum disk) but the Disk fails to come online and as a result quorum is lost and the cluster fails until I resume cluster service on Node2.
It looks to me like Node2 owns the quorum Disk explicitly ..

Hi I have a 4 node Windows server 2012 Hyper-V cluster. When I try to run a cluster validation report, everything else is fine but it fails at validate the Operating System Installation Option step. I did some research but couldn't really find any solution.
Anyone knows how to pass this test? Thanks.
Here's the error I get when run the test:
An error occurred while executing the test.
The operation has failed. An error occurred while getting the operating system installation option for node "server1"Hi JasonLiu2002,
Please post the original error information, the current information is so wide that difficult to determine where may have issue and please offer more information about your
server configuration, you can refer the following article to prepare your cluster environment first.

Hi,
I have a Problem with DHCP Failover in Windows Server 2012
We configured 2 Windows Server 2012 with DHCP Role and created a Scope with loadbalancing algorithm.
The Problem is, that the two DHCP Servers Show different statistic Information. DHCP 1 has 254 addresses and 218 in use. DHCP Server 2 has 254 addressses and 187 in use.
We found situations when one DHCP Server has no available IP addresses and the other one has about 40% available addresses.
Why do the Servers have different available address spaces ? We have one scope with one class c net, 254 addresses.
Our Szenario is with this config not high available, cause of sometimes running out of IP addresses on one DHCP Server.
Thanks for help
Björn
Björn Schiemann LemonTec IT Systems KG htttp://www.lemontec.deHi Bjoern,
Would you please provide us your detailed load balance configurations.
In load-balance mode of operation both the servers respond to client requests. Here’s how the servers ensure the distribution of client requests between themselves:
Each DHCP server on receiving the client request calculates hash of the MAC address in the client request as per hashing algorithm specified in RFC 3074. Each server hashes any MAC address
to a value between 1 and 256. If the load distribution ratio between the 2 servers is left at the default of 50:50; and if the hash of the MAC address falls between 1 and 128 then the first server will respond to the client request else if the hash is any
value between 129 and 256, the other server responds to the client. This ensures that only one server responds for a specific client. If the load distribution ratio has been changed by the admin to a different value, the distribution of hash buckets would
be in that proportion. The admin does not need to configure the MAC addresses on any server configuration a-priori.
Quote from DHCP Failover Load Balance Mode
http://blogs.technet.com/b/teamdhcp/archive/2012/08/06/dhcp-failover-load-balancing-mode.aspx
In addition, I notice that you have a Class C network for the scope, why does each DHCP server have 254 IP address available?
Thanks.

Failover cluster validation errors
We are trying to set up a failover cluster file server between two domain controllers running Windows Server 2012 RC.
When we go through the Validate Configuration wizard, we receive the following errors messages against the Active Directory configuration (names have been changed).
"It could not be determined whether node computer1.example.com is a read only domain controller because of this error: The object does not exist."
and
"Node(s) computer1.example.com computer2.example.com cannot reach a writable domain controller. Please check connectivity of these nodes to the domain controllers."
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? Replication and DNS appear to be working fine for all other services.I did some tracking down of the problem, and it appears that it stems from the cluster not being able to retrieve the node names. The function specifically is called GetFqdnNodeNamesFromCluster( ).
It can be seen if you run "Get-ClusterLog" while the cluster is in the process of being created. This error seems to be the root of the cluster creation failure. Here is a stacktrace:

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Hyper-V NIC Teaming Issue
Hi All,
I have cluster windows server 2012 R2 with hyper-v role installed. I have an issue with one of my windows 2012 R2 hyper-v host.
The virtual machine network adapter show status connected but it stop transmit data, so the vm that using that NIC cannot connect to external network.
The virtual machine network adapter using Teamed NIC, with this configuration:
Teaming Mode : Switch Independent
Load Balance Algorithm : Hyper-V Port
NIC Adapter : Broadcom 5720 Quad Port 1Gbps
I already using the latest NIC driver from broadcom.
I found a little trick for this issue by disable one of the teamed NIC, but it will happen again.
Anyone have the same issue with me, and any workaround for this issue?
Please Advise
Thanks,Hi epenx,
Thanks for the information .
