Failover cluster-Online(redirected) access message

Hi,
I have a four node cluster with CSV enabled. Out of the three disks in CSV, one of them is showing  the status as "online(redirected access)". The other two disks are showing the correct status "Online". When checking the "critical
events" section of the failover cluster i could see the following message:
Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume4' ('Cluster Disk 1') is no longer directly accessible from this cluster node. I/O access will be redirected to the storage device over the network through the node that owns the volume. This may result in degraded performance.
If redirected access is turned on for this volume, please turn it off. If redirected access is turned off, please troubleshoot this node's connectivity to the storage device and I/O will resume to a healthy state
I'm using win 2008 R2. How should i know the exact cause of the  above issue?
I checked the four possible causes as per http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2010/12/16/troubleshooting-redirected-access-on-a-cluster-shared-volume-csv.aspx
Please help me.
Regards,
Jaffer

Hi,
I used perfmon counters on all the nodes and checked the "Cluster CSV File System" - Redirected Read Bytes & Redirected Write Bytes". I checked on all the four nodes.
On hpv7, i can see both "Redirected Read Bytes & Redirected Write Bytes" to volume4 as zero.
However on other nodes, "Redirected Read Bytes & Redirected Write Bytes" to  volume4 are having non-zero values.
So is the storage connection from hpv7 to volume4 having issues?
Please update.
Thanks,
Jaffer Amin

Yes, you need to have properly configured and working hardware VSS provider so actual snapshot creation and mount and work with VEEAM would take minimal amount of time. You need to kick your SAN vendor for that.
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Can't remove Failover Cluster feature on Windows 2008 R2

    Hello
When remove the Failover Cluster feature has following message:
    Cannot remove Failover Clusting
This server is an active node in a failover cluster. Uninstalling the Failover CVlustering feature on thos node may impact the availabilty of clustered service and applications. It is recommended that you first evict the server from cluster membership. This
can be done through the Failover Cluster Management snap-in by expanding the console tree under Nodes, selecting the node, clicking More Actions, and then clicking Evict.
I'm sure there no cluster formed, so how can I remove it?
    Thanks !

Hey I have the same problem,
Somehow cluster got installed on one node on windows 2008 R2 but it was not showing anything in cluster fail over manager wizard and cluster service is
    not running
when I am trying to remove the fail over cluster it says
    "This
server is an active node in a failover cluster. Uninstalling the Failover CVlustering feature on those node may impact the availability of clustered service and applications. It is recommended that you first evict the server from cluster membership. This can
be done through the Failover Cluster Management snap-in by expanding the console tree under Nodes, selecting the node, clicking More Actions, and then clicking Evict."
    But there
is no cluster at all, I am not sure how remove it
    So let
me know will that  power shell command "clear-clusternode" fixes my problem?
    and please
let me know do I need to run it in normal Power shell command line or Power shell failover cluster manager command line?

  • MS DTC not coming online on SQL Server 2008 R2 failover cluster

    Dear Experts,
On a SQL Server 2008 R2 failover cluster, MS DTC cluster service is not coming online. It fails with below error message.
"The DTC cluster resource's log file path was originally configured at: E:. Attempting to change that to: M:. This indicates a change in the path of the DTC cluster resource's dependent disk resource.  This is not supported. The error code
    returned: 0x8000FFFF".
From the Component Services, we can see under the clustered DTCs, in the properties of the log file that it is configured for E drive. The 'Transaction list' and 'Transaction Statistics' are empty. When I try to change the log file path to
point to M drive I get this warning message.
"An MSDTC log file already exists in the selected directory. Resetting an existing MS DTC log file may cause your databases and other transactional resource managers to become inconistent. Please review the MSDTC Administrator's manual before
proceeding. Do you wish to reset the existing MS DTC log"
Could you please advise if this is safe to proceed with this warning as the  'Transaction list' and 'Transaction Statistics' are empty or would it cause any other issue.
    Thanks,
    MM

  • Failover Cluster 2012 Network Name fails to come online.

    Hi,
I created a new one node Windows 2012 failover cluster.  The cluster was created successfully, but configuring Client Access Point  finished without creating VCO in Active Directory. Then I created computer object in the same OU
    with cluster according article
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732035(v=ws.10).aspx
Permissions on OU and  VCO for cluster account where escalated to FULL, DNS A and PTR records where created, quota related to creating computer objects was increased, but has fixed my problem: events 1194 and 1069 are generated on attempt to online
network name. Following one guide, I tried to find the registry key for network name resource that corresponded with the GUID of the object of VCO, but it was absent here.
I've investigated everything I could find and found no solution.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Redirect print server webpage in a 2008 R2 Failover Cluster.

I am configuring a 2 node 2008 R2 Failover Cluster with print services as a resource. On a client, i can install a printer by going to the website http://virtualprintserver.domain/printers/, selecting a printer and click on connect.
To prevent showing the default IIS page, i want to redirect http://virtualprintserver.domain to http://virtualprintserver.domain/printers/.
How can i achieve this? I have searched in IIS manager, but could not find anything.
    Thank you for your help.

    Solved!
After consulting a colleague with web design knowledge we came up with the following solution:
    Go to %SystemDrive%\inetpub\wwwroot\
    Rename iisstart.htm in iisstart.htm.old
    Create a new index.htm file with the code: <html><head><title></title><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;URL=http://virtualprintserver.domain/printers" /></head><body></body></html>

  • LUN can't be accessed after move it to another Hyper-V Failover Cluster without "remove from cluster shared volumes" on the original cluster

    Hi all,
I have a old cluster, let's call it cluster01, and a new cluster, cluster02. There is a LUN attach to cluster01 as a CSV volume. I forgot to  "remove from cluster shared volumes" in Failover Cluster console, then power off the cluster01 and
attach the LUN to the cluster02. Now the LUN can't be accessed in cluster02, it show as a RAW disk. I tried to attach the LUN to it's original cluster cluster01 but can't read it too.
Is there any way to get it back?

    Hi Zephyrhu,
Can you run Clear-ClusterDiskReservation powershell cmdlet and see that helps?

  • DSC, SQL Server 2012 Enterprise sp2 x64, SQL Server Failover Cluster Install not succeeding

Summary: DSC fails to fully install the SQL Server 2012 Failover Cluster, but the identical code snippet below run in powershell ise with administrator credentials works perfectly as does running the SQL server install interface.
In order to develop DSC configurations, I have set up a Windows Server 2012 R2 failover cluster in VMware Workstation v10 consisting of 3 nodes.  All have the same Windows Server 2012 version and have been fully patched via Microsoft Updates.
The cluster properly fails over on command and the cluster validates.  Powershell 4.0 is being used as installed in windows.
    PDC
    Node1
    Node2
The DSC script builds up the parameters to setup.exe for SQL Server.  Here is the cmd that gets built...
    $cmd2 = "C:\SOFTWARE\SQL\Setup.exe /Q /ACTION=InstallFailoverCluster /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /INSTANCEID=MSSQLSERVER /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /UpdateEnabled=false /IndicateProgress=false /FEATURES=SQLEngine,FullText,SSMS,ADV_SSMS,BIDS,IS,BC,CONN,BOL /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=password#1 /SQLSVCACCOUNT=SAASLAB1\sql_services /SQLSVCPASSWORD=password#1 /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS=`"SAASLAB1\sql_admin`" `"SAASLAB1\sql_services`" `"SAASLAB1\cubara01`" /AGTSVCACCOUNT=SAASLAB1\sql_services /AGTSVCPASSWORD=password#1 /ISSVCACCOUNT=SAASLAB1\sql_services /ISSVCPASSWORD=password#1 /ISSVCSTARTUPTYPE=Automatic /FAILOVERCLUSTERDISKS=MountRoot /FAILOVERCLUSTERGROUP='SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)' /FAILOVERCLUSTERNETWORKNAME=SQLClusterLab1 /FAILOVERCLUSTERIPADDRESSES=`"IPv4;192.168.100.15;LAN;255.255.255.0`" /INSTALLSQLDATADIR=M:\SAN\SQLData\MSSQLSERVER /SQLUSERDBDIR=M:\SAN\SQLData\MSSQLSERVER /SQLUSERDBLOGDIR=M:\SAN\SQLLogs\MSSQLSERVER /SQLTEMPDBDIR=M:\SAN\SQLTempDB\MSSQLSERVER /SQLTEMPDBLOGDIR=M:\SAN\SQLTempDB\MSSQLSERVER /SQLBACKUPDIR=M:\SAN\Backups\MSSQLSERVER > C:\Logs\sqlInstall-log.txt "
    Invoke-Expression $cmd2
When I run this specific command in Powershell ISE running as administrator, logged in as domain account that is in the Node1's administrators group and has domain administrative authority, it works perfectly fine and sets up the initial node properly.
When I use the EXACT SAME code above pasted into my custom DSC resource, as a test with a known successful install, run with the same user as above, it does NOT completely install the cluster properly.  It still installs 17 applications
related to SQL Server and seems to properly configure everything except the cluster.  The Failover Cluster Manager shows that the SQL Server Role will not come on line and the SQL Server Agent Role is not created.
The code is run on Node1 so the setup folder is local to Node1.
The ConfigurationFile.ini files for the two types of installs are identical.
    Summary.txt does have issues..
    Feature:                       Database Engine Services
Status:                        Failed: see logs for details
Reason for failure:            An error occurred during the setup process of the feature.
Next Step:                     Use the following information to resolve the error, uninstall this feature, and then run the setup process again.
Component name:                SQL Server Database Engine Services Instance Features

failure . Status code: 5023. Description: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.  .
It feels like this is a security issue with DSC or an issue with the setup in SQL Server, but please note I have granted administrators group and domain administrators authority.  The nodes were built with the same login.  Windows firewall
    is completely disabled.
Please let me know if any more detail is required.

    Hi Lydia,
Thanks for your interest and help.
I tried "Option 3 (recommended)" and that did not help.
The issue I encounter with the fail-over cluster only occurs when trying to install with DSC!
Using the SQL Server Install wizard, Command Prompt and even in Powershell by invoking the setup.exe all work perfectly.
So, to reiterate, this issue only occurs while running in the context of DSC.
I am using the same domain login with Domain Admin Security and locally the account has Administrators group credentials.  The SQL Server Service account also has Administrators Group Credentials.

  • Server 2008 Hyper-V Failover Cluster Error on Domain Controller Reboot

I am pretty new to Hyper-V virtual but I have 2 Hyper-V Clusters, each with 2 Nodes and a SAN, 1 Physical Domain Controller for failover cluster management and 1 virtual domain controller as backup.  All is running well, no issues.  I installed
windows updates on the physical DC and upon reboot, got an error 5120 on cluster 2 that says "Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 1') is no longer available on this node because of 'STATUS_CONNECTION_DISCONNECTED(c000020c)'.  All I/O will
temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.  It pointed to the 2nd node in that cluster as being the issue but when I look at it, it is online and all healthy so I don't understand why the error was triggered and if the DC would
go down for a failure, would that node not be able to access the CSV permanently.
Appreciate any help anyone can provide.

    Hi mtnbikediver,
In theory, if you has the correct configuration of cluster the DC restart will not cause the CSV down, does your shared storage installed on your DC? Did you run
the cluster validation before you install the cluster? We strongly recommend you run the cluster validation before you build the cluster, same time please install the recommend update of 2008 cluster first.

I found a similar scenario issue the DC restart will effect the cluster network name resource offline, but it is for 2008R2.
Cluster network name resource cannot be brought online when one of the domain controllers is partly down in Windows Server 2008 R2

  • SQL Server Agent fails to connect to DB after enabling mirror on failover cluster

    Hello:
We have multiple databases running in a Failover Cluster instance: SQL 2012SP1 on Server 2008 R2 failover cluster (NOT AlwaysOn). We are trying to add a high-performance mirror in a standalone instance for DR. My understanding is that should be a perfectly
    normal, supported configuration.
The mirroring is working properly; however, the clustered SQL Server agent is unable to run jobs that run in the mirrored databases.
We get the following in the job log: Unable to connect to SQL Server 'VIRTUALSERVERNAME\INSTANCE'.  The step failed.
There is a partner message in the agent log: [165] ODBC Error: 0, Connecting to a mirrored SQL Server instance using the MultiSubnetFailover connection option is not supported. [SQLSTATE IMH01]
The cluster is not a mulitsubnet cluster. All hosts are connected to the same subnets and there is no storage replication. I can not find any place where I can adjust the connect string options for SQL Agent.
Any guidance or suggestions on how to resolve this would be appreciated.
    ~joe

    SQL Team - MSFT:
Thank you for taking the time to research and provide a clear answer.
This seems very much a workaround and very unsatisfactory.
You are correct, there is an IP dependency with OR condition. Moving to an AND condition is not viable for us. The whole point is to provide network redundancy. With an AND condition, if EITHER network interface fails, the service will go offline or fail
to come online without manual intervention. This is arguably worse for uptime than having a single interface available.
We are in process of rewriting all our SQL jobs to start in tempdb before transitioning to the appropriate target database. If this works for all of our jobs, I will mark the above response as answer.
Again, thank you for the answer.
    Regards,
    Joe M.

The system detected an address conflict for IP address 192.168.127.142 with the system having network hardware address 00-50-56-AE-29-23. Network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result.
    192.168.127.142 --> secondary IP of PrintServer01
how could that be possible it conflict by one of the PrintServer01 node ? the detailed is as below:

I have double check in all of the cluster members that all IP addresses is now unique.
however I'm sure that I the IP is static not by DHCP as from the IPCONFIG results below:

    I
am facing the same scenario as the original poster. This is on Server 2008 R2 SP1.
WIndow event log entries follow the same pattern. The MAC address listed in connection with the duplicate IP belonged to the passive node.
Interestingly, the Cluster.log begins to explode with activity a few milliseconds before the first Windows event is logged.

  • Configuring Failover Cluster Server Share as a Distribution Point

Hello and thanks for this helpful forum!
I am trying to configure a server share as a Distribution Point and am running into problems.  I am running SCCM R2 on Server 2008.  I am trying to use a clustered share coming from 2008 R2 Failover Cluster.
I have been trying to get this working for the better part of 2 days now, and I have successfully created a Distribution Point to another 2008 Server (non-R2) by simply using the site system (not the server share).
When I try to use the server share option, I keep receiving an error with Message ID 4701 stating that the SMS Site System Status Summarizer cannot access storage object
    \\servername\sharename$ on site system
    \\servername\sharename$
The operating system reported error 2147942467: The network name cannot be found.
The server share is defined as a site system as
    \\servername\sharename$
I am trying to create a "Packages" directory under it, so I'm using the option "Share the distribution folder" under the Data Access tab of the Package.
In addition, I have given local admin rights to the site server on both nodes of the cluster.  I have given the site server modify rights to the share and NTFS permissions.  I have given Authenticated Users Read access to the share and NTFS.
As I mentioned, I can take another server and define a Site System as a DP and everything will work properly.  I am still missing something though regarding using a Server Share.
Thanks so much in advance for your assistance.

    Hi,
    No DP on NLBs:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb735883.aspx
Yes, but that is NOT a failover file cluster. Is there a workaround? It seems silly to have to stand up an additional server for this. It also seems odd that the forthcoming version of SCCM would not have some support for failover clustering which was a HUGE
improvement over the previous clustering solutions from MS.Jeffrey S. Patton Assistant Director of IT School of Engineering Computing Services University of Kansas 1520 West 15th Street Lawrence, KS. 66045-7621

  • SQL 2014 Failover Cluster

    Hi All,
I am having permission issue while bringing sql cluster resource online.
I had the cluster setup and working with ENT edition, inorder to change the SQL edition, I removed the node from the cluster, uninstalled all the binaries and create a new failover cluster using STD edition. Using the same network name/IP as before, however
the setup started failing while trying to bring the clustered service online.
Cluster network name resource 'SQL' failed to create its associated computer object in domain '' during: Resource online.
The text for the associated error code is: Access is denied.
Please work with your domain administrator to ensure that:
    - The cluster identity 'DBCLUS$' has Create Computer Objects permissions. By default all computer objects are created in the same container as the cluster identity 'DBCLUS$'.
    - The quota for computer objects has not been reached.
    - If there is an existing computer object, verify the Cluster Identity 'DBCLUS$' has 'Full Control' permission to that computer object using the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.
There was no permission change in AD, and I verified all the proper permissions exits.
In the properties tab, I see Kerberos status: Access is denied.

I am stumped. Any help appreciated. Thank You.

  • Failover Cluster Hyper-V Storage Choice

I am trying to deploy a 2 nodes Hyper-V Failover cluster in a closed environment.  My current setup is 2 servers as hypervisors and 1 server as AD DC + Storage server.  All 3 are running Windows Server 2012 R2.
Since everything is running on Ethernet, my choice of storage is between iSCSI and SMB3.0 ?
I am more inclined to use SMB3.0 and I did find some instructions online about setting up a Hyper-V cluster connecting to a SMB3.0 File server cluster.  However, I only have budget for 1 storage Server.  Is it a good idea to choice SMB over iSCSI
in this scenario?  ( where there is only 1 storage for the Hyper-V Cluster ).
What do I need to pay attention to in this setup?  Except some unavoidable single points of failures.
In the SMB3.0 File server cluster scenario that I mentioned above, they had to use SAS drives for the file server cluster (CSV).  I am guessing in my scenario, SATA drives should be fine, right?

"I suspect that Starwind solution achieves FT by running shadow copies of VMs on the partner Hypervisor"
No, it does not run shadow VMs on the partner hypervisor.  Starwind is a product in a family known as 'software defined storage'.  There are a number of solutions on the market.  They all provide a similar service in that they allow for the
use of local storage, also known as Direct Attached Storage (DAS), instead of external, shared storage for clustering.  Each of these products provides some method to mirror or 'RAID' the storage among the nodes in the software defined storage.
So, yes, there is some overhead to ensure data redundancy, but none of this class of product will 'shadow' VMs on another node.  Products like Starwind, Datacore, and others are nice entry points to HA without the expense of purchasing an external storage
shelf/array of some sort because DAS is used instead.
    1) "Software Defined Storage" is a VERY wide term. Many companies use it for solutions that DO require actual hardware to run on. Say Nexenta claims they do SDS and they need a separate physical servers running Solaris and their (Nexenta) storage app. Microsoft
we all love so much because they give us infrastructure we use to make our living also has Clustered Storage Spaces MSFT tells is a "Software Defined Storage" but they need physical SAS JBODs, SAS controllers and fabric to operate. These are hybrid software-hardware
solutions. More pure ones don't need any hardware but they still share actual server hardware with hypervisor (HP VSA, VMware Virtual SAN, oh, BTW, it does require flash to operate so it's again not pure software thing).
    2) Yes there are number of solutions but devil is in details. Technically all virtualization world is sliding away from ancient way of VM-running storage virtualization stacks to ones being part of a hypervisor (VMware Virtual Storage Appliance replaced
with VMware Virtual SAN is an excellent example). So talking about Hyper-V there are not so many companies who have implemented VM-less solutions. Except the ones you've named it's also SteelEye and that's all probably (Double-Take cannot replicate running
VMs effectively so cannot be counted). Running storage virtualization stack as part of a Hyper-V has many benefits compared to VM-running stuff:
    - Performance. Obviously kernel-space running DMA engines (StarWind) and polling driver model (DataCore) are faster in terms of latency and IOPS compared to VM-running I/O all routed over VMBus and emulated storage and network hardware.
    - Simplicity. With native apps it's click and install. With VMs it's UNIX management burden (BTW, who will update forked-out Solaris VSA is running on top of? Sun? Out of business. Oracle? You did not get your ZFS VSA from Oracle. Who?) and always "hen and
chicken" issue. Cluster starts, it needs access to shared storage to spawn a VMs but VMs are inside a VM VSA that need to be spawned. So first you start storage VMs, then make them sync (few terabytes, maybe couple of hours to check access bitmaps for volumes)
and only after that you can start your other production VMs. Very nice!
    - Scenario limitations. You want to implement a SCV for Scale-Out File Servers? You canont use HP VSA or StorMagic because SoFS and Hyper-V roles cannot mix on the same hardware. To surf SMB 3.0 tide you need native apps or physical hardware behind.
That's why current virtualization leader VMware had clearly pointed where these types of things need to run - side-by-side with hypervisor kernel.
    3) DAS is not only cheaper but also faster then SAN and NAS (obviously). So sure there's no "one size fits all" but unless somebody needs a a) very high LUN density (Oracle or huge SQL database or maybe SAP) and b) very strict SLAs (friendly telecom company
we provide Tier2 infrastructure for runs cell phone stats on EMC, $1M for a few terabytes. Reason? EMC people have FOUR units like that marked as a "spare" and have requirement to replace failed one in less then 15 minutes) there's no point to deploy hardware
SAN / NAS for shared storage. SAN / NAS is an sustained innovation and Virtual SAN is disruptive. Disruptive comes to replace sustained for 80-90% of business cases to allow sustained live in a niche deployments. Clayton Christiansen\s "Innovator's Dilemma".
    Classic. More here:
    Disruptive Innovation
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_innovation
So I would not consider Software Defined Storage as a poor-mans HA or usable to Test & Development only. Thing is ready for prime time long time ago. Talk to hardware SAN VARs if you have connections: How many stand-alone units did they sell to SMBs
    & ROBO deployments last year?
